Rocking the Daisies 

For its fourteenth year running, Rocking 

the Daisies is bringing together the best of 

international and local musical talent. But 

this year’s line-up promises to be something 

special with UK pop sensation The 1975, US 

rapper Russ, and Australian one-person band 

Tash Sultana, looking to rock the Western 

Cape from 4-6 October. 

The camping facilities have never been better

For one week each year, the savannah of the 

Karoo is turned into Tankwa Town, a vibrant

Participants are encouraged to create camps, 

themed to your choice. “Your camp can 

be tiny, it can be enough for two or three 

guests at a time, or a dozen, or it could go 

full massive and be large enough to handle 

hundreds of people – no matter the size it’s 

all welcome, and we suggest you try and 

tackle a camp that suits your crew size, and 

your resources,” say organisers. 

But AfrikaBurn doesn’t give you the licence 

to laze about in the sun. Every person who 

attends the event needs to create something.

festival. It is a great way to get outdoors – 

experience the Karoo – while gaining new

The World Heritage Committee, meeting in Manama under 

the chair of Shaikha Haya Bint Rashed al-Khalifa of Bahrain, 

inscribed the Barberton Makhonjwa Mountainlans as a World 

Heritage site on July 2, 2018. 

The Barberton Makhonjwa Mountainlans is situated in 

Mpumalanga Province which is in the north-eastern part 

of South Africa. The site comprises 40% of the Barberton 

Greenstone Belt, one of the world’s oldest geological structures. 

It represents the best-preserved succession of volcanic and 

sedimentary rock dating back 3.6 to 3.25 billion years, when 

the first continents were starting to form on the primitive Earth. 

It also features meteor-impact fallback breccias resulting 

from the impact of meteorites formed just after the Great 

Bombardment (4.6 to 3.8 billion years ago). 

“As the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) this 

affords us an opportunity to add more to the variety of product 

offerings in the province”, said Mr Johannes Nobunga, CEO of 

MTPA. 

“As we continue to promote the destination, our marketing 

efforts will also go a long way in creating awareness in our 

local communities and the world at large about this unique 

tourism offering and what it means for the province”, added 

Nobunga. 

Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains becomes South Africa’s 10th 

World Heritage site, and the first for Mpumalanga. This iconic 

site will now be granted access to funds from the World Heritage 

Fund to use for conservation which is likely to increase tourism 

in the area. 

“We are delighted with this achievement as a province. We 

have had a dedicated team that worked tirelessly for years to 

see this dream realized. We are grateful for their hard work in 

putting Mpumalanga on a global map. It is our responsibility to 

ensure that we work together with the communities to protect 

the integrity and the authenticity of this natural property”, 

concluded Nobunga.

When you join My Smart Kid, you get two free welcome gifts 

– a kiddies’ backpack worth R175 and an Early Childhood 

Development (ECD) handbook for parents. Only R299 every 2 

months including delivery. Your little one gets a Smart Box filled 

with age-appropriate toys, educational products and tailormade 

information and activities. Ours is the only programme 

of its kind with a dedicated panel of experts to guide you 

through all developmental areas from before birth until your 

munchkin goes to primary school! The programme is based 

on the South African Department of Education’s National 

Curriculum Framework for ECD. Through playing and

The My Smart Kid programme produces thinkers and for this 

reason we are offering boxes that facilitate learning in the 

areas of Maths, Language and Life Skills in grade 1. 

Grade 1 

Each Smart Box is an assortment of learning tools, games and 

products that reinforce skills being learned in the first year of 

primary school with the added benefit that your child will learn 

while having fun with you. Each of the 3 subject boxes contains 

a Parent Guide to explain the purpose of the contents of the 

box with great ideas and fun activities. This is not subscriptionbased 

so parents can buy a box that can be used for the entire 

year and beyond. It’s a keeper!

These boxes have been recently launched and can be purchased separately or 

in addition to the grade 1 boxes. The Life Skills Box will help your child make 

well-informed, healthy choices and learn behaviours that contribute to their safety 

and well-being. This box will help parents guide and prepare their child for life 

and all its wonderful, yet sometimes scary, possibilities. 

Grade 2 

In grade 2 mathematics, your child will start to understand more complicated 

concepts and look for reasons behind things by asking questions to obtain more 

information. The Maths Box will assist with growing their thinking and problemsolving 

skills as they start to understand how mathematics relates to other 

subjects and to the world around them. 

The Language Box is aimed at taking the frustration out of helping your child learn 

english language skills during their second year at school. Inside this box are 

carefully selected products that reinforce listening, reading, speaking and writing 

skills through practice, play and quality time with a parent.
