SELECTED PERFORMANCE ENSEMBLES W.H. Oliver Middle School Wind Symphony Friday, April 12, 2019 • 11:00-11:50 AM • Tennessee Ballroom CD Oliver Middle School is part of Music Makes Us, a unique public/private partnership with Metro Nashville Public Schools, the mayor’s office, and the Nashville music community to provide meaningful support for music in our schools. Over 400 Oliver Middle School students (46% of the school population) participate in the band program. The Intermediate Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Symphony annually appear in regional and state concert performance assessments and have received all superior ratings every year since the school’s inception in 2004. The Oliver bands perform approximately 25 concerts each school year. Oliver Bands have selected three times to perform at the Tennessee Music Education Association Conference, performed twice at the CBDNA/NBA Southern Division Conference in 2012 and 2018, and have been featured with CMA artists such as Carrie Underwood, Kelsea Ballerini, and Adam Sanders. The Oliver Band was a demonstration ensemble for Richard Floyd and has held visiting artist clinics with Larry Clark, Robert Sheldon, Richard Saucedo, and Marguerite Wilder. Susan Graham Waters Director of Bands A native of Nashville, Tennessee Susan Waters is in her 32nd year of Instrumental Music Education and is currently the Director of Bands at Oliver Middle School in Nashville, Tennessee. She is a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University and Western Kentucky University. Mrs. Waters is frequently sought after as a professional development clinician and guest conductor across the United States and has been awarded the National Band Association’s Citation of Excellence three times. In addition to her responsibilities as Director of Bands at Oliver, she serves as content lead for the district and a “side by side” coach for young and emerging band directors. Mrs. Waters has also been twice recognized by the Country Music Association as a Teacher of Excellence. Katie Harrah Assistant Director of Bands Mrs. Katie Harrah is in her 12th year as the Assistant Band Director at Oliver Middle School. She holds a Bachelor degree in Music Education from Otterbein College (Columbus, Ohio) and a Masters in Trumpet Performance and Brass Pedagogy from Belmont University (Nashville). She has taught at both the high school and middle school levels directing marching band, jazz band, and concert band. At Oliver, Mrs. Harrah co-teaches the Beginning, Intermediate, and Symphonic Bands, as well as the Wind Ensemble. She also directs the Jazz Band. Kevin Jankowski Assistant Director of Bands Kevin Jankowski was born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee. He is in his 7th year of teaching Instrumental Music and has been at Oliver Middle School for the past 5 years. Mr. Jankowski graduated from The University of Tennessee. Mr. Jankowski most recently served as the Percussion Chair for TMEA. The Band and Percussion ensemble have had wide and continued successful since he has arrived at Oliver. The percussion ensembles have received Superior ratings at Solo & Ensemble every year. 54 TENNESSEE MUSIC EDUCATION ASSOCIATION
Southwind High School Concert Singers Friday, April 12, 2019 • 1:00-1:50 PM • Tennessee Ballroom AB The Southwind High Concert Singers is an elite group of 41 students ranging from grades 10th- 12th in Southeast Memphis, TN. The Concert Singers rehearse Monday through Friday for 55 minutes and receive honors credit for their participation in the ensemble. Recent Accolades include Superior rankings at regional choral festivals, state choral festivals, Ole Miss choral festivals, 2017 Grand Champions at the Music in the Parks Choral Competition in Atlanta, GA, and 2018 Grand Champions at the Music in the Parks Choral Competition in St. Louis, MO. The Southwind Concert Singers had the distinct pleasure of singing backup for legendary gospel artist CeCe Winans and Kierra “Keke” Sheard. The Southwind Concert Singers believe that a performance without expression is a disservice to audience members and the composer. This elite group of singers abide by one motto: “Divided by Section, United by Harmony.” Dante’ Sentrell Webb Choral Director Dante’ Sentrell Webb is a native of Memphis, Tennessee and is in his fourth year of teaching at Southwind High School. Dante’ holds a Bachelor and Master Degree in Choral Music Education from The University of Memphis. While attending the University of Memphis, Dante sung in University Singers and Chamber Choir. Dante’ also studied private voice with Dr. Pamela Gaston as a Baritone. As an active performer, Dante’ sings in the chorus as a Tenor with Opera Memphis and was named Assistant Chorus Master during the 2018-2019 season. Dante’s professional affiliations include: Tennessee Music Educators Association (TMEA), American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), West Tennessee Vocal Music Education Association (WTVMEA), NAfME, Tennessee Educator Association (TEA), and Omicron Delta Kappa. Dante’ has held the position of choral director at Southwind High School since 2015. Since then, Dante’ has earned a reputation for bringing unparalleled passion and excitement to his choral studio, and is dedicated to changing the lives of students through music. Dante’ is committed to instilling pride, superior work ethics, and a commitment to excellence in the lives of the students in his choral program.
