Installation of Rock Fall Barrier State Route 330 to Begin
Beginning on September
9, 2019, a full closure
will be in effect until
September 20, 2019, which
has been shortened by two
days. The original term was
to be 14 days. During this
closure, crews will perform
rock scaling, slope excavations
and construct the two
rock-fall barriers.
The California Department
of Transportation (Caltrans) will
begin a rock fall barrier project
on State Route 330 (SR-330) near
Running Springs. This $5 million
contract was awarded to Spectrum
Construction Group, Inc. out of Irvine.
This project will remove rock
debris from the slope, excavate and
reduce slope size and install two
rock-fall barriers at Postmiles 37
and 39.
Be advised, weather conditions
may affect this operation.
Where will your family be when
disaster strikes?
Some important info from the San Bernardino
County Office of Emergency Services
How will you find each other?
Will you know if your children
are safe?
Disasters can strike quickly
and without warning. It can force
you to evacuate your neighborhood
or confine you to your home. What
would you do if basic services including
water, gas, electricity or
telephones were cut off? Local officials
and relief workers will be on
the scene after a disaster, but they
cannot reach everyone right away.
Families can and do cope
with disasters by preparing in advance
and working together as a
team. Follow the steps listed in this
brochure to create your family’s disaster
plan. Knowing what to do
is for your protection and is your responsibility.
Various agencies such as
the County Fire Department, the
Sheriff, County Animal Care and
Control, and the Red Cross partner
together to facilitate your safe evacuation.
Special Populations
• Do you know a senior or someone
with a disability?
• Seniors and people with disabilities
that are self-sufficient under
normal circumstances may have to
receive help of others in a disaster.
• Create a self-help network of relatives,
friends, and coworkers to assist
in an emergency.
• Wear medical alert tags and
bracelets to identify your disability
in case of an emergency. If you
have a severe speech, language, or
hearing disability: keep on hand a
writing pad and pencil to communicate
with others.
Evacuation Routes
• Residents should be familiar with
all routes that lead in and out of
their area. It is difficult to predetermine
evacuation routes. Many
factors such as the type of incident,
location and weather conditions
play a critical role in the selection
of evacuation routes.
• Use travel routes specified by
local authorities. Do not use offroad
shortcuts when evacuating a
National Forest Area. The National
Forest could have these roads
closed and you could be trapped by
locked gates.
Shelter Types
There are two types of shelters:
1. Evacuation Centers, which are
for short-term sheltering.
2. Red Cross shelters, which are for
long-term sheltering.
You may also be told to “shelter in
place” if conditions warrant. This
involves staying in your home or
business with doors and windows
closed.
Animals
Many pets are injured or killed, every
year because no provisions were
made for them in family dis aster
plans. The time to contact animal
shelters for information on caring
for pets during emergencies
is before disaster strikes. Public
emergency shelters often exclude
pets for space and health reasons.
EVACUATION
Evacuate immediately if told to do
so:
The 2019 Mountain Top Days
by Kevin Somes, RSACCPresident
The 2019 edition of Mountain
Top Days was once again well
attended and was a huge success.
This annual event, hosted by the
Running Springs Area Chamber of
Commerce, has been going on for
well over twenty-five years. While
the event has changed over time, the
continuing goal is to offer a family
friendly community event for
all to enjoy. The event started off
with the parade on Friday evening
viewed by hundreds of spectators
along Hilltop Boulevard. I had a
once in a lifetime opportunity to be
this year’s Grand Marshal and I am
grateful for having been given that
opportunity. Many thanks to Bob
Kinzel who spent many hours organizing
and managing the parade.
The Street Dance featured a local
band, Highway 173, and many enjoyed
great food and drinks while
relaxing under the star filled sky.
The Chamber is grateful to Suzie
Heisler of The Cut Above for hosting
the event on her property.
On Saturday well over one thousand
individuals enjoyed the
Farmers Market and vendor faire
plus various activities and games.
Joan Moseley hosted the Raw Egg
Toss. While a messy endeavor,
participants enjoyed the challenge
of tossing a raw egg to a partner
without breaking the egg or getting
splattered with egg yolk if one’s
egg were to break. Mike Lee who
S. Peter
managed Mountain Top Days also
led our Watermelon Eating contest
which is always a fun and yummy
event to participate in.
The Chili Cook-Off went well
with several entries vying for both
the Judge’s Choice (first, second
and third place) plus the People’s
Choice Awards. We thank Terisa
Bonito for coordinating the event
and also to our local businesses
who donated prizes.
Without Community support and
the event’s generous sponsors,
Mountain Top Days would not happen.
The 2019 sponsors were First
Foundation Bank, the Golden Oaks,
Hilltop Pet Supply, Pali Mountain,
Rim Family Services and Snow
Valley. Mike Lee and the event
committee also were instrumental
in making Mountain Top Days
2019 a successful event. Planning
is already underway for next year’s
event. The Chamber welcomes
volunteers who would like to assist
with this great Community event.
