Arts and cultural events in the Seaford area<br />

Welcome to the latest update on what’s going on in<br />

our vibrant town, compiled by Andrea Hargreaves.<br />

Art and crafts<br />

Sunday 1st <strong>Sept</strong>ember sees the last day of Artwave,<br />

the area’s celebration of local art and crafts, so make<br />

sure you pencil in the Open Houses you have not<br />

yet seen. For example, Nova House is home on 31st<br />

August and 1st <strong>Sept</strong>ember to black and white photos<br />

by Tony Gaitskell, 47 Southdown Road is seeing Kath<br />

and Chris Dawson’s pottery and photography, and at<br />

11 Beacon Road you’ll find jewellery, ceramics, fused<br />

glass, metalwork, textiles, digital painting and stained glass.<br />

Artist Patrick Goff is painting in his studio at 2 Headland<br />

Avenue, the Fairways Colle ctive will be at 5 Fairways<br />

Road with everything from clothing to paper sculptures,<br />

Onneke Art in High Street is showing local artists’ work,<br />

there are paintings at 16 Hill Rise, mixed media<br />

and sculptures next door at number 18 and<br />

figurative and abstract work at 58 Belgrave<br />

Road. Drop in to the new Studio + gallery<br />

next door to the Crypt Gallery in Church<br />

Street where printmaker Karen Potter and<br />

photographer Malcolm Davidson are joining<br />

forces to show landscapes inspired by the<br />

rugged coast of Connemara and the rivers,<br />

cliffs and Downs of Sussex. Artwave closes at<br />

the Crypt with Seaford Art Club’s show, presented as a<br />

diverse mix of contemporary art and hand-crafted gifts.<br />

Then from 21st to 28th <strong>Sept</strong>ember the gallery is taken<br />

over by Seaford’s Sally-Mae Joseph and her Landscape<br />

of Love exhibition of lively and colourful paintings, prints,<br />

cards and linocuts which all have a connection to her<br />

daughter Debby Van Dyk, who sadly died of cancer last<br />

<strong>Sept</strong>ember, see page 25 Debby and her young family<br />

lived in the town for nearly five years.<br />

Music<br />

Go to Seaford Little Theatre on 30th or 31st August<br />

for A Little Bit of Vaudeville, directed by Graham Tubb,<br />

tickets from Redgolds in Broad Street. Splash Point<br />

Jazz Club on Wednesday 4th <strong>Sept</strong>ember at 7pm has<br />

vocalist and percussionist Raul d’Oliveira joining the<br />

Neal Richardson Trio at The View, Southdown Road. And<br />

on Friday 6th <strong>Sept</strong>ember, doors open at 7pm, Seaford<br />

Sessions are introducing all-girl band Midnight Skyracer<br />

who are playing a sellout performance of their brand of<br />

roots at The Little Theatre in Steyne Road.<br />

Cinema<br />

Theatre from 14th<br />

to 22nd <strong>Sept</strong>ember,<br />

celebrates all sorts<br />

of heroes, starting<br />

with Harry Palmer, played by Michael Caine in The<br />

Ipcress File (PG), with a talk and Q&A by Pop Art<br />

specialist Professor Alex Seago, on Saturday 14th<br />

<strong>Sept</strong>ember at 7.30pm. Director Jerry Rothwell<br />

introduces his film, How to Change the World (15),<br />

about environmentalist fighters Greenpeace, on Friday<br />

20th <strong>Sept</strong>ember at 7.30pm. Then it’s on to Superheroes<br />

Saturday with Incredibles 2 (PG) at 10.30am, Black<br />

Panther (12A) at 2.30pm and Mystery Men (12A)<br />

at 7.30pm, with an intro by score composer Stephen<br />

Warbeck. The Breakfast Special the<br />

following day is Fighting With My<br />

Family (12A) at 10.30pm, followed at<br />

2pm by an afternoon of short films by<br />

local film students. The festival finale is<br />

the wonderful To Kill a Mockingbird,<br />

starring Gregory Peck, at 8pm. The<br />

new season, see page 22, begins with<br />

an NT Live screening encore of James<br />

Corden in the hilarious One Man Two<br />

Guvnors on Thursday 26th <strong>Sept</strong>ember at 7pm.<br />
