The recent report from the United Nati<strong>on</strong>s Children’s Fund, UNICEF, said Nigeria is <strong>on</strong>e of the 30 countries of the world where cyber bulling is rife. The report said <strong>on</strong>e in three young people in these 30 countries admitted having been a victim of <strong>on</strong>line bullying with <strong>on</strong>e in five reporting having skipped school due to cyber bullying and other cyber violence. Cyber bullying or cyber har<strong>as</strong>sment is a form of bullying or har<strong>as</strong>sment using electr<strong>on</strong>ic means. It is when some<strong>on</strong>e, typically teens, bully or har<strong>as</strong>s others <strong>on</strong> the internet, particularly <strong>on</strong> social media sites. Harmful bullying behaviour can include posting rumours, threats, sexual remarks, a victims’ pers<strong>on</strong>al informati<strong>on</strong>, or pejorative labels -hate speech. Bullying or har<strong>as</strong>sment can be identified by repeated behaviour and intent to harm. Victims may experience lower self-esteem, incre<strong>as</strong>ed suicidal ideati<strong>on</strong>, and a variety of negative emoti<strong>on</strong>al resp<strong>on</strong>ses, including being scared, frustrated, angry, and depressed. Also, almost three-quarters of young people also said social networks, including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter, are the most comm<strong>on</strong> place for <strong>on</strong>line bullying. We are in this together and we must share the resp<strong>on</strong>sibility in partnership.
