By Simon Adewale
Change, in Sapele Local
described the recent
appointment and
empowerment
programmes across Delta
State by Senator Ovie
Omo-Agege as laudable
and commendable.
The group attributed it
to the love the Deputy
Senate President has for
his people, but decried the
alienation of Okpe youths
in Sapele council from
appointments and empowerment
programmes.
According to
Convener of the group,
Herdsmen turning FUTO to
cattle colony—Registrar
By Chidi Nkwopara
O WERRI—THE
management of
Federal University of
Technology, Owerri, FUTO,
has raised the alarm that
herdsmen and their cows
have invaded the
institution.
Speaking to Vanguard
yesterday, the Registrar,
Mr. John Nnabuihe,
wondered why herdsmen
want to turn the campus
into a grazing area.
According to him, “it was
not funny driving to the
Senate building this
morning (yesterday). It is
baffling why herdsmen are
gradually transforming
FUTO premises into a cattle
colony.”
The Registrar said the
institution has written to the
chairman, Cattle Owners
Association, Obinze,
complaining about the
development.
Part of the letter, dated
September 4, and copied to
heads of security agencies
in the state, read: “I write
on the authority of the Vice
Chancellor, to draw your
attention to the incessant
invasion of herdsmen and
their cattle on the campus
of the Federal University of
Technology, Owerri.”
He reminded the Cattle
Owners Association
chairman that government
prohibited the group from
grazing on university lands
and environs.
He added: “The sensitive
nature of grazing on
campus and the obvious
tension it breeds among
students, may ultimately
lead to clashes, if not
curbed. This is given the
current precarious security
challenges associated with
open grazing.”
The university then
requested the chairman to
urgently intervene by
directing the herdsmen to
desist from grazing within
the campus.
O WERRI—SENATOR
Rochas Okorocha
yesterday, boasted that his
successor, Governor Emeka
Ihedioha was afraid of him.
Okorocha spoke in Owerri
through his Special
Adviser on Media, Sam
Onwuemeodo, in reaction
to a law suit filed against
him by Ihedioha.
Okorocha, the immediate
past governor of the state
said the court action was a
bad example by the current
government.
It stated: “Imo State
governor, Chief Emeka
Ihedioha had falsely
denied ordering the arrest
of his predecessor, Senator
Rochas Okorocha, about
one month after the arrest
order was issued.
“He has also taken the
former governor to court in
his resolve to continue to
step on his toes, that of his
family members and all
those who served the state
under him.
“In the suit filed at the
Magistrate Court on
Friday, September 6, Chief
Ihedioha claimed that since
he became governor,
Senator Okorocha has
‘consistently been in the
deplorable habit of
fomenting trouble’ and that
he is ‘always in Owerri to
“Note that security
agencies have been alerted
to take measures against
anyone grazing cattle
within the university
environment,” the
Registrar added.
Meanwhile, the Institute
intimidate
government’.”
his
‘Okorocha hardly
comes to Imo’
But Onwuemeodo said
that “Okorocha left Imo in
the evening of May 29. He
was not in Imo when
Ihedioha and his
avalanche of task forces
and committees
descended on his
children and investments.
He was not in Imo when
his daughter was slapped
and shops of the daughter
and wife were invaded
and looted.
“Between May 29 and
today, Okorocha had
visited Imo only once. He
left after spending two
days. He was also not in
Imo when they took about
700 thugs to invade his
private residence at Sipbat.
It took the intervention of
well-meaning Imo people,
including youths, to stop
them.
“The next thing
Ihedioha did through the
Secretary to the State
Government, Uche
Onyeaguocha was to
order for the arrest of
Okorocha. The whole world
descended on them and
condemned that
recklessness and as an
after-thought, he denied
giving the arrest order.
of Women, Gender and
Development Studies, in
collaboration with the
Students Union Government
and FUTO Women
Association, yesterday,
flagged off its war against
vices in the university.
Ihedioha’s scared, says Okorocha
“Why did it take him
almost one month to say
that? The same kind of
denial greeted the
demolition of Akachi Tower.
“Ihedioha has some fears:
the fear of what can be done
to reduce the long antenna
of Okorocha’s steady
popularity among Imolites;
“the fear of how to
overcome the burden
created by Okorocha’s
m o n u m e n t a l
achievements; and the
fear that he never won the
governorship election.
“With these fears, he
decided to fight Rochas
Okorocha with all his
strength, to the extent that
the whole thing has
become petty.
“Obviously, Chief
Ihedioha appears
overwhelmed. Capacity is
key in the governance of
Imo State. And when one
lacks it, he resorts to selfhelp,
which has nothing
to do with visionary or
articulate leadership or
action.
“Governor Ihedioha
should stop being allergic
to Okorocha and to
everything about him.
“This court action is a
very bad example. It is
also embarrassing like his
previous actions against an
innocent man who handed
over to him.”
