Thank you to all the SCH staff who came out and
participated in Relay for Life of Rowan County to
honor cancer survivors and their journey.
Through the sale of nearly 500 “Relay for Our
Heroes” T-shirts, as well as proceeds from fundraisers
throughout the year, SCH’s Relay Team raised
nearly $4,500 for cancer research and care programs.
St. Claire HealthCare also provided a complimentary
dinner for all cancer survivors
All staff are encouraged to join us as we continue
to honor survivors at Relay events throughout our
service region.

St. Claire HealthCare is proud to announce the addition of
the following family medicine providers to our medical staff.
Cory Yoder, DO - St. Claire Family Medicine - Morehead, Downtown
St. Claire HealthCare is proud to announce the full-time addition of Cory Yoder, DO, to our
medical staff. Dr. Yoder is now seeing and accepting new patients at the St. Claire Family
Medicine Downtown Morehead location.
Dr. Yoder, a native of Wolfe County, KY, earned her medical degree from the Kentucky
College of Osteopathic Medicine at the University of Pikeville and completed her residency
at St. Claire HealthCare.
Dr. Yoder met her husband Brett Yoder, DO, while completing her medical degree. Both Dr.
Yoder and her husband say they enjoyed being students at St. Claire HealthCare so much
that they decided to become full-time physicians with St. Claire.
“I chose to practice family medicine because I love caring for patients in all of life’s stages of
life,” says Dr. Yoder. “Family medicine allows me to take care of pregnant women, babies, and
geriatric patients.”

Jessica Slone, APRN - St. Claire Family Medicine - Sandy Hook
St. Claire HealthCare is proud to announce the addition of Jessica Slone, APRN, to our
medical staff. Slone is now seeing and accepting new patients at St. Claire Family Medicine’s
Sandy Hook location where she joins Aaron “Parker” Banks, DO, Cindi Bradley, APRN, and
Diana Rose, APRN.
“I wanted to become a nurse because I love people, I went back to school to become a Nurse
Practitioner because I saw a need for better access to care and wanted to provide excellent
care to people in my home state, and St. Claire allows me to do that.”
Slone, a native of London, KY, comes to St. Claire with almost nine years of direct patient
care experience. She earned her Master of Science in Nursing from DeVry University in
Chicago, Illinois.
Slone enjoys spending time with her husband Chris and their three children, Dawson,
Dillon, and Emma-Kate. She also enjoys exploring all of the area’s lakes, caves, and hiking
trails with her family.

St. Claire HealthCare recently partnered with
Nobl Health to provide the St. Claire HealthCare
Family & Friends Connection, an online resource
designed to increase communication between
the health care team and families of St. Claire
Regional Medical Center patients.
Anyone who has had a loved one hospitalized
knows how stressful it can be when you can’t be
by their side. Thanks to new Friends & Family
Connection, you now have quick access to secure,
online patient care updates.
We want families to be comfortable stepping away from
the hospital or returning to work knowing updates about
their loved one are easily accessible. Thanks to the Family
& Friends Connection we can now provide them with
real-time patient care updates 24/7.
Rest assured all information is secure. Only those with
an access code will be able to view any information.
Communicating

and families to ensure

more time doing what matters most; caring for patients.

Thadis Cox, MD, Assumes New Role as
Medical Director of Specialty Practices

Please join us in welcoming Thadis Cox, MD, to his new role as Medical Director
of Specialty Practices for the Medical Group.
Notably, Dr. Cox will serve as the liaison with the specialty medical staff and
administration, facilitating communication between and among those members.
He will provide clinical leadership for quality initiatives and will help to develop
clinical goals and processes. Dr. Cox will provide clinical insight into our work
redesigning clinic processes in order to improve staff engagement, patient care,
and flow. He will also assist with orientation and mentoring of new specialists.
Specialties reporting to Dr. Cox will be General Surgery, Orthopedics, Urology,
Surgical Podiatry, Cardiology, Pulmonology, Gastroenterology, Neurology,
Nephrology, and Interventional Pain Management.
Mark Rhodes will continue in his role as Administrative Director
of Specialty Practices. Dr. Cox and Mark will function in
complementary roles each primarily focused on clinical and
operational leadership respectively.
Dr. Cox will continue to see patients in his gastroenterology
practice and to work in the endoscopy lab and see inpatient
consults.

Proactive Risk Team
Campaign Educates Patients and Visitors
on the Importance of Patient Identifiers
Do you get tired of being asked for
your name and date of birth over and
over when at your doctor’s office or
during a visit to the hospital? We know
it can be frustrating, but patient safety
is our priority!
When we talk about patient safety at
St. Claire HealthCare, we’re talking
about how we protect our patients
from avoidable errors, injuries,
accidents, and infections. In our
continued efforts to make sure our
patients are safe, the Proactive Risk
Team launched a new campaign to
educate patients and visitors about the
importance of continually verifying
each patient’s name and date of birth
throughout their visit.
Two-factor authentication, such
as name and date of birth, is the
industry standard for verifying patient
identity. The two identifiers must be
directly associated with the patient
and the medication, blood product,
specimen container (attached label),
treatment, or procedure. In addition
to policy and process enhancements to
reinforce this standard, posters have
been strategically placed throughout
SCH facilities to educate patients and
visitors about patient identifiers.
“Patients play a critical role in
ensuring that the care they receive
is safe,” said Tamara Brandenburg,
Risk Manager/Patient Safety
Officer/Privacy Officer. “If
possible, patients should confirm
the accuracy of their wristbands.
They may also be asked to confirm
the accuracy of their information
on the registrar’s computer screen
when they register. If our patients
have any concerns that their
identity wasn’t properly verified,
we want them to speak up.”

Sepsis is the body’s extreme response to an infection and
is a potentially life-threatening condition. Without timely
treatment, sepsis can rapidly lead to tissue damage, organ
failure, and death.
Who it hurts: While sepsis is more likely to affect very young
children, older adults, people with chronic diseases, and
those with a weakened immune system, sepsis is an equalopportunity
killer impacting people of all ages and levels of
health.
Prevention: The risk of sepsis can be reduced by preventing
infections, practicing good hygiene, and staying current with
vaccinations.
Treatment: Sepsis is a medical emergency that requires
urgent attention and rapid treatment for survival. Sepsis can
be treated and, in many instances, lives are saved by using
existing and proven protocols.
Recovery: Many individuals fully recover from sepsis, while
many others are left with long-lasting effects, such as missing
limbs or organ dysfunction, like kidney failure. Other aftereffects
of sepsis are less obvious, such as memory loss, anxiety,
or depression.
Symptoms: Symptoms of sepsis include:
S – Shivering, fever, or very cold
E – Extreme pain or general discomfort (“worst ever”)
P – Pale or discolored skin
S – Sleepy, difficult to rouse, confused
I – “I feel like I might die”
S – Shortness of breath
Get medical care IMMEDIATELY if you suspect sepsis or have
an infection that’s not getting better or is getting worse.
CALL 911, or go to your nearest hospital emergency room
with an advocate and say, “I AM CONCERNED ABOUT
SEPSIS.”
