Retail Unit & Corporate Design– French Passage, Karaköy
Instructor Dr. A.Tolga İLTER, Instructor Ebru Ersöz, Res.Assist. Uğur Efe Uçar
2019-2020 Fall semester
Project description
Students are expected to propose an interior design project of a retail unit that preferably belongs to
an innovative business start-up. Retail design project will also include designing a corporate identity
for the business you are designing for. Corporate design will include but not be limited to logo design,
business cards, paper bags, cups etc. where appropriate. Details will be determined according to the
scenario developed by the student. Students are expected to do a satisfactory site analysis, research
on retail design and corporate identity design.
Program requirements:
The program will be determined according to the scenario developed by the student and the needs of
the relevant business type selected. Students are expected to pay attention to the architectural
integrity of the passage.
Studio work will consist 3 different stages:
1. Site analyses
As the first stage of their projects students will collect data about the environmental, commercial and
daily life of the location and building. Intervention with the city, surrounding area and
daily/seasonal/historical/ commercial life and environmental analyses, potential of the place/building
for the proposed work and future predictions will be presented as 2D, 3D and 4D work (sketches,
mapping, collages, models, video, animations etc.)
2. Scenario and concept development
At the next stage, each student will develop his/her own scenario for a retail business that fits the
analyses and the minimum program that fits the scenario proposed (synthesis stage). Using the
analyses and the scenario developed, different types of layout and design concepts will be discussed
to reach the final stage. Presentations will be as 2D, 3D and 4D work (sketches, diagrams, mapping,
collages, models, video, animations etc. where appropriate).
3. Project proposal
Under the light of the previous stage work, students will design spatial solutions to design their retail
units. This stage starts with 1:50 drawings and matures with 1:20 plan-section-elevation drawings
including the corporate identity work, 1:10-1:1 scaled application details for selected parts,
equipment, materials, finishing, and lighting fixtures etc. and 1:20 and/or 1:50 models.
Studio location: Taşkışla 216B
Attendance & desk crits:
100% Attendance is required to studio classes. 80% Attendance is mandatory as required by the
University. Students should attend all the submissions, pre-submissions and the jury presentations.
Late submissions will be graded over %80 and %60 for the next two courses respectively and will not
be accepted later. Absence during the pin-up and juries will strictly be reflected to the final grades. All
the desk crits will be made on sketches and/or printed material only. Students who want to get desk
crits are responsible to make their sketch and/or printed material before the studio starts. Any digital
image or 3d presentation can only be regarded as a supporting material in the presence of hard copy
drawings.
Assignment(s)/quiz:
A couple of assignments and/or sketching quizzes are planned. Subjects will be announced in advance.

Exercises:
Referring to the main studio topic, the preliminary exercises focus on understanding the existing urban
fabric around the study area, while encouraging the students to generate an extensive perception and
understanding of the context. This exercise, intends to guide the students by orienting them to deeper
observations via sensory experiencing of the site, as well as thorough mappings of the existing ambient
characteristics.
Exercise 1: [LOOK AROUND] Strolling and Mapping Around French Passage/Karaköy
For the initial exercise, students are invited to interact with the given site and the questions listed
below, and return into studio with the harvested (in)formation of the site. It would be also appreciated,
if they return with further questions and answers from the site: _how does it look like? _how does it
feel like? _how does it smell like? _how does it taste like?
Submission: At the end of the Exercise 2, students are asked to submit 2D/3D and 4D outputs consist
of mappings, sketches, and/or moving-image.
Due: 26 September 2019
Exercise 2: [TELL ME] Narrating and Re-Narrating the Individual Stories of the Local Vendors
Exercise 2 is designed to enhance the engagement of the students to the site, by enabling them to
communicate with the local people and particularly with the local retailers in and around the French
Passage, and narrate/re-narrate their individual stories, through re-fabricating the on-site interviews
performed. Students are encouraged to use different techniques of audio-visual recordings and
reproductions as well as coding and over-coding of the repeating themes and highlights of the
speeches via processing or other software technologies etc. while maintaining their interpretations of
other milieus of graphic, soundscape or mockups.
Submission: Students are asked to bring the re-fabricated narratives from the site, into the studio, to
convey the individual stories of the local retailers, resonating with diverse techniques.
Due: 3 October 2019
Evaluation: Will be a combination of attendance, studio performance, submissions and jury
evaluations. Besides the attendance of the student, quality and quantity of the hard copy studio work
submitted by the student will affect the evaluation directly.
