BY FRED GARDNER CAN YOU TAKE SOME TIME TO SUPPORT OUR ASSOCIATION? FRED GARDNER President fred@badgerstateinc.com 715-874-7777 ext. 107 probably true. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like the days, weeks and months go by faster and faster. Part of that feeling, I think, is the pace we’ve kept over the past few months. The market is strong and contractors are busy, and that’s a very good thing. Somewhere along the line, I heard someone say that when contractors have time, they don’t have money, and when they have money, they don’t have time. I think that’s With the economy humming along, we’re all so busy doing the work at hand that we’re not thinking about our future quite as much. There’s no time to think when we have to be doing something all the time. I invite you to slow down and give yourself some time to think. Go ahead, set the magazine down for a few minutes. I’ll wait … I’ll bet that a lot of you just kept right on reading and didn’t accept the invitation. Even those couple of minutes can feel uncomfortable – lazy even – when there’s so much to do! In good times and in bad, one constant for me and my company is the PHCC-WI Association. And that’s what I want you to consider. Here are a few things to think about … How do I stay on the leading edge with my code and product knowledge? What’s happening with the code changes I heard about? How am I going to find another employee to do the work we have lined up? What does the next generation want out of work and is my company able to meet their needs? Why are plan reviews taking so long? PHCC-WI is constantly working on these and other issues, developing solutions that benefit the industry. Maybe you don’t have time to sit on a code council or apprenticeship committee, but aren’t you glad that there are people who are? Aren’t you glad that their efforts are being coordinated to create a clear and coherent policy for our industry? Maybe there’s another question you might consider: Why haven’t I joined PHCC-WI? There’s an application in this magazine on page 46. Fill it out. Send it in. Help us broaden the reach of our organization to every part of the state. If you are among that group of people who want to be involved in the decision-making, we have opportunities for you, right now, to get involved and help us advance the industry and profession. We can connect you with opportunities in many areas, up to and including service on the Board of Directors. Our board comes from all areas of the state, but you don’t have to be from a particular region to serve and you don’t need to wait to be asked. Give us a call and we’ll be happy to talk about the opportunities. (There’s a list of directors in the front of this magazine!) For me and my company, membership and service to the industry have gone hand in hand. What I’ve found is that the harder I try to give something, the more I seem to get back. It was incredibly rewarding being involved in the Plumbing Code Advisory Committee and I’ve always gotten something out of my service on local apprenticeship committees. Being on the board and the Association’s president this year has been a huge benefit. The people I’ve met – fellow contractors, vendors, and others – have been a huge benefit to my firm.
