GUÐMUNDUR JÓNASSON TRAVEL 

For more than 85 years, our company has hosted travellers from all 

corners of the world. Through Guðmundur Jónasson Travel, also 

called GJ Travel, many have returned time and time again together 

with their families and friends, to experience Iceland’s unique, 

beautiful nature and historical traditions. Our dedicated team never 

lose sight of the ‘personal touch’, and work hard to ensure that the 

varied and interesting itineraries offered by GJ Travel provide fully 

for the needs of today’s travellers. 

Our company was formed in 1931, when our founder Guðmundur 

Jónasson obtained his first driving licence. Fascinated by the 

seldom explored interior, he ventured out to the highlands and even 

onto the glaciers, opening up a whole new world to the 20th century 

traveller. Since he passed away in 1985, his family has continued to 

share his love and enthusiasm for Iceland, and is committed to 

introducing fascinating tours and adventures for everyone to enjoy.

A PERSONAL REFLECTION 1909 – 1985 

Guðmundur, the founder of Guðmundur Jónasson Travel, was not content with 

Iceland’s limited number of roads in the 1930´s, so he pioneered his own. His travels 

in the highlands and on Iceland’s glaciers are legendary and today’s travellers benefit 

from his explorations. 

When NASA chose Iceland as their training ground for the first moon landing 

because of the lunar style landscape, they chose Guðmundur to show the way. He 

teamed up with Sir Edmund Hillary, guiding him when he visited Iceland after his 

ascent of Mt. Everest. 

Those who travel with us today travel in his footsteps and we hope they 

share his love for this Land of Ice and Fire called Iceland.

The Country: Iceland is an island of 103.000 km2 (39,756 sq.miles), about the size of Portugal, Cuba, South Korea, the US state of Kentucky and the Indian state of Bihar. 

Its highest peak, Hvannadalshnjúkur, rises to 2.110 m and over 11 per cent of the country is covered by glaciers, including Vatnajökull, the largest in Europe. 

Energy: Situated on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Iceland is a hot spot of volcanic and geothermal activity: 30 post-glacial volcanoes have erupted in the past two centuries, and 

natural hot water supplies much of the population with inexpensive, pollution-free heating. Rivers are harnessed to provide affordable hydroelectric power. 

People: Out of a population numbering around 340.000, two-thirds live in the capital Reykjavík and its neighbouring towns in the southwest. Keflavík International Airport 

is located about 50 km (30 miles) from the capital. The interior highland is uninhabited (and uninhabitable), and most centers of population are situated on the coast. 

Language: Iceland was settled by Nordic people in the 9th century - history tells that the first permanent settler was Ingólfur Arnarson, a Norwegian Viking who made his 

home where Reykjavík now stands. The Icelanders still speak the language of the Vikings, although modern Icelandic has undergone changes in pronunciation and in 

vocabulary! Iceland is alone in upholding another Norse tradition, i.e. the custom of using patronymics rather than surnames. An Icelander’s Christian name is followed by 

his or her father’s name and the suffix -son or -dóttir, e.g. Guðrún Pétursdóttir (Guðrún, daughter of Pétur). Members of a family can therefore have many different "surnames", 

which sometimes causes confusion to foreigners! 

Route 1 or the “Ring Road”: It is the main road in Iceland which goes around the island, mostly along the coast, connecting many villages and towns. The total 

length of Route 1 is 1360 km (843 miles). In general, driving tours around Iceland with the most popular side trips are about 2000 km (1240 miles). If you add the Westfjords, 

calculate about 3000 km (1860 miles) of driving. 

Best time to travel: Iceland is a country that inspires visitors year round. Spring offers brightening days and emerging flora and fauna, summer has nearly 

round-the-clock sunlight and balmy weather, autumn brings a wonderful change in colours while winter features dark mysterious days, softly glowing Northern Lights and 

even occasionally snow. The hardest part is choosing when to visit. 

The climate in Iceland: Thanks to the Gulf Stream, Iceland enjoys a moderate maritime climate: cool in summer and fairly mild in winter. Normal summer day 

temperatures range between 5-8 °C (41-47 °F) for lows and 12 -18 °C (54-64 °F) for highs. When it comes to Iceland’s weather — the one thing you can count on is 

unpredictability. The best plan is to be prepared for anything and everything AND always to dress in layers. The Icelanders have a saying: "there's no such thing as bad 

weather, just bad clothing."

ITINERARY 

Day 1, MON: WELCOME TO ICELAND FLYBUS shuttle to Reykjavík. 

Day 2, TUE: GOLDEN CIRCLE We start with classic highlights: Gullfoss 

waterfall, the active geothermal area of Geysir and the UNESCO world heritage 

site of Þingvellir National Park. Overnight in West Iceland. 

Day 3, WED: SNÆFELLSNES PENINSULA AND LAVA CAVE Today we 

travel around the Snæfellsnes Peninsula where volcanic craters, lava flows, an 

ice cap, mountains, fjords, sandy beaches and high cliffs shape the landscape. A 

lava cave tour takes us 35 meters underground and about 200 meters into a lava 

tube. In the afternoon we catch the ferry to the West Fjords over a wide bay with 

countless islands. We stay for two nights in the area of Patreksfjörður. 

Day 4, THU: ICELAND’S WESTERNMOST POINT We follow the coastline 

and stop at a charming folk and transport museum. We continue through a very 

remote and sparsely populated region to Látrabjarg, the largest seabird cliff and 

westernmost point of Iceland and Europe. If weather and road conditions allow 

we travel to Rauðisandur beach. 

Day 5, FRI: BEAUTIFUL WEST FJORDS We travel the shore of scenic 

fjords, beautiful beaches, and pass through small fishing villages until we reach 

the unique waterfall Dynjandi. We continue along the southern shores of the West 

Fjords. This is a route less travelled and is characterized by sheer cliffs, deep cut 

bays and narrow stretches of coastal lowland. 

Day 6, SAT: HEADING NORTH At Haukadalur, there is an authentic replica 

of the homestead of Erik the Red, the famous explorer who founded the Icelandic 

colony in Greenland. His son Leif-the-Lucky was the first European to set foot in 

North America. We head north and stop at a local farm for lunch and a horse 

show. We stay two nights in Akureyri. 

Day 7, SUN: NORTHERNMOST TOWN We travel to Siglufjörður, Iceland's 

northernmost town and known as the herring capital of the North Atlantic. On the 

way we pass small fishing villages and stop at a deserted valley that even most 

Icelanders have not seen. Included is a visit to the Herring Museum and also beer 

tasting at a local micro-brewery. The rest of the day is free at leisure and optional 

whale watching or horseback riding. 

Day 8, MON: GEOLOGICAL WONDERS AND NATURE BATHS We 

explore Goðafoss waterfall and continue to Lake Mývatn, known for its rich bird 

life and extraordinary volcanic lava landscapes. We visit pseudo craters, walk in 

the lava field Dimmuborgir, see the tephra cone Hverfjall, see hot springs, 

fumaroles and bubbling mud pools, travel to the explosion crater lake Víti and 

soak at the Mývatn Nature Baths. 

Day 9, TUE: THE SECRET OF THE EAST Dettifoss is Europe’s most 

powerful waterfall. From there we head through the uninhabited highlands to the 

isolated village Bakkagerði in East Iceland. Only 120 inhabitants live in this 

charming fjord village, built snugly next to colorful and impressive mountains, 

and known for its extensive population of elves. Look out for kittiwakes, puffins, 

and other seabirds. 

Day 10, WED: FJORDS, GLACIER, AND ICE It’s a day to admire the 

dramatic fjord landscape and its tiny fishing villages in the East Fjords where we 

visit an interesting stone and mineral collection. Vatnajökull is Europe’s biggest 

glacier and we stop for a boat ride amongst the floating icebergs on the 

Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon. Overnight in the region. 

Day 11, THU: VATNAJÖKULL NATIONAL PARK AND THE SOUTH We 

visit Skaftafell at the Vatnajökull National Park, covered by ice and nestled below 

Iceland’s highest mountains. We drive along the south coast, always between the 

sea, black lava beaches and rugged mountains, glaciers and waterfalls. Farewell 

dinner and overnight in Reykjavík.

Day 1, SAT: WELCOME TO ICELAND FLYBUS shuttle to Reykjavík. 

Day 2, SUN: LAND OF SAGAS & VOLCANO CLIMB After a Reykjavík city 

tour, we head to West Iceland. In the settlement center in Borgarnes we learn 

about the Icelandic sagas. Next, we climb Grábrók volcano crater, formed about 

3400 years ago. Deildartunguhver is one of the most voluminous hot springs in 

Europe. Soon after, we explore Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls. Enjoy 

Icelandic history at the cultural site in Reykholt. Overnight in West Iceland. 

Day 3, MON: TRAVEL NORTH, WHALE WATCHING & SEA ANGLING 

Today, we travel over mountain passes, through lava fields, green pastures, 

fertile farmlands and along fjord landscapes to North Iceland. We go whale 

watching and sea angling at Eyjafjörður, Iceland's longest fjord, right below the 

Arctic Circle. Before reaching the picturesque town of Húsavík in Northeast 

Iceland where we stay two nights, we stop in Akureyri, Iceland's second-largest 

city. 

Day 4, TUE: GEOLOGICAL WONDERS & NATURE BATHS The day 

begins with Goðafoss, a beautiful waterfall but also a prominent spot in Iceland's 

history. We tour the Lake Mývatn area, known for its abundant bird life and 

amazing volcanic lava landscapes. The lake's unique features are shaped by 

nature - strange lava formations, any kind of volcanic craters, attractive bays 

filled with thousands of birds and ducks. We stroll through the mysterious lava 

field of Dimmuborgir, look at pseudo craters and see the tephra cone Hverfjall. 

Our last stop is the Mývatn Nature Baths, where we soak in geothermal water, 

which contains a lot of minerals, is alkaline and well-suited for a relaxing and 

rejuvenating bath. 

Day 5, WED: FROM NORTH TO EAST We explore the geothermal area of 

Námaskarð with hot springs, fumaroles and bubbling mud pools. At Krafla, we 

see the impacts of volcanic activity and you can smell the sulfur. Víti is a circular 

explosion crater filled with blue water, surrounded by colorful mountains and 

hissing steam vents. We continue our journey to the 44-meter high Dettifoss, 

Europe's most powerful waterfall. From there, we head through the uninhabited 

highlands to East Iceland, where we stay one night. 

Day 6, THU: FJORDS, GLACIERS, AND ICE The Icelandic ring road takes 

us toward the southeast. It's a day to admire green valleys, high mountains, 

dramatic fjord landscape and its tiny fishing villages at the end of twisty roads in 

the East Fjords. We see Vatnajökull - Europe's biggest glacier and stop for a boat 

ride among the floating icebergs on the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon. Overnight in 

the area. 

Day 7, FRI: VATNAJÖKULL NATIONAL PARK & THE SOUTH We walk 

close to one of the many glacial tongues at Vatnajökull National Park – a Kodak 

moment. We cross a sandy desert and drive along the south coast, always 

between the sea, rugged mountains, glaciers, and waterfalls. The world-famous 

Reynisfjara shore, near the village Vík, is widely regarded as the most impressive 

black sand and pebble beach in Iceland. The area has an abundant birdlife, 

including puffins, fulmars, and guillemots. Iceland's past comes alive at the 

Skógar folk museum with its turf houses. Next stops are Skógafoss and 

Seljalandsfoss waterfall. Overnight in South Iceland. 

Day 8, SAT: HORSES & THE GOLDEN CIRCLE We see classics today and 

start with a horseshow. Next, we explore the Golden Circle sights: Gullfoss 

waterfall, Geysir geothermal springs and Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO 

world heritage site, and an area of exceptional geological and historical interest. 

Overnight in Reykjavík, Iceland's capital.

Day 1, FRI: WELCOME to ICELAND FLYBUS shuttle to Reykjavík. 

Day 2, SAT: VOLCANO CRATER, SEALS, FJORDS & MOUNTAINS Meet 

the tour guide and travel west, passing the town of Borgarnes and climb the 

Grábrók volcano crater. In the afternoon visit a natural history & seal museum in 

a small fishing village in Northwest Iceland and stroll around the local harbour. 

Stop at the turf church of Víðimýri and continue along scenic fjord landscape and 

over several mountain passes. Overnight in Akureyri, the capital of North Iceland. 

Day 3, SUN: AKUREYRI, LAKE MÝVATN & GEOTHERMAL BATHS In 

the morning explore Akureyri, a charming town of 17000 inhabitants, visit the 

botanical garden and enjoy the panoramic view over Eyjafjörður fjord. In the 

afternoon travel to an important spot in Iceland's history, Goðafoss, the waterfalls 

of the Gods. Continue to Lake Mývatn which is known for its geological wonders 

and active bird life during summer. Stop at bizarre lava formations, walk around 

pseudo craters and soak at Mývatn Nature Baths that contain a unique blend of 

minerals, silicates and geothermal micro-organisms. Overnight at Lake Mývatn 

or in Húsavík. 

Day 4, MON: LAVA LABYRINTH, HOT SPRINGS & TRAVEL EAST 

Today hike in a lava labyrinth at Dimmuborgir "the dark castles" and visit the hot 

spring area of Námaskarð with bubbling mud pools and steaming solfataras. 

Head through the uninhabited highlands and moonlike surroundings to East 

Iceland. Overnight in Egilsstaðir or in Borgarfjörður-Eystri. 

Day 5, TUE: EAST FJORDS It's a day to admire the dramatic fjord landscape 

and its tiny fishing villages at the end of twisty roads in the East Fjords and on 

route we visit an interesting stone and mineral collection. In the afternoon we 

reach Vatnajökull – Europe’s biggest glacier that is visible all over Southeast 

Iceland. Overnight in Höfn. 

Day 6, WED: VATNAJÖKULL & SOUTH COAST We travel along the 

southern part of the glacier Vatnajökull and spend some time at Europe’s largest 

national park. We stop at Jökulsárlón, a glacial lagoon filled with floating 

icebergs, and we walk on the black sands of the so-called Diamond beach, 

where large icebergs get stranded. A beautiful drive with many natural wonders 

awaits us in the afternoon. We head across the Eldhraun lava field and the sandy 

desert of the south coast, overlooked by mountainous cliffs, glaciers and 

waterfalls. We stroll along the black lava beach of Reynisfjara near Vík. Skógafoss 

waterfall is 62 meters high and one of the most impressive waterfalls in the 

country. We continue to the high but narrow Seljalandsfoss waterfall which 

plunges over the mountain. Overnight location is near Hvolsvöllur, South Iceland. 

Day 7, THU: ICELANDIC HORSES & GOLDEN CIRCLE We explore 

classics today as we travel the route of the Golden Circle sights. We start the day 

at Friðheimar, where you learn about the Icelandic horse, its special qualities and 

history and visit a geothermal greenhouse. Explore Geysir geothermal fields with 

a variety of hot springs and bubbling pools. We continue to Gullfoss, "the golden 

falls", which is a double waterfall that tumbles 34 meters into the Hvítá river and 

attracts travellers in summer and winter. We travel inland to Þingvellir National 

Park, a UNESCO world heritage site. As we return to Reykjavík, we take you for a 

short city tour to show highlights of the world's northernmost capital. Overnight 

in Reykjavík.

Day 1, SUN: WELCOME TO ICELAND FLYBUS shuttle to Reykjavík. 

Day 2, MON: BLUE LAGOON & REYKJANES PENINSULA Meet your 

tour guide and warm up in the geothermal mineral rich waters of the famous 

Blue Lagoon. Next, we explore Krýsuvík, an area with solfataras, fumaroles, 

mud pots and hot springs. We continue through lava fields to Strandarkirkja, a 

Lutheran parish church on the southern coast of Iceland. Next stop is the 

charming fishing village of Eyrarbakki where we visit the local Maritime and Folk 

Museum. Stay 3 nights in Hella, South Iceland. 

Day 3, TUE: LANDMANNALAUGAR & ÞJÓRSÁRDALUR Today we 

drive the rough unpaved road to Landmannalaugar, an oasis in the barren 

highlands, surrounded by colorful rhyolite mountains. The highlight is a 

90-minute round-trip hike up toward Brenninsteinsalda, the rainbow mountain 

of Iceland, which is still "hot" and where you can see sizzling sulfur springs and 

vapor at its sides. It could very well be the most colourful and spectacular 

volcanic mountain of Iceland, and so its picture is often found in books and 

calendars. In Landmannalaugar there is also a natural geothermal stream where 

you can enjoy a relaxing bath. We continue to the beautiful waterfall Hjálparfoss 

surrounded by unusual basalt rock formations. Nearby is the Viking farm ruins 

at Stöng, which was completely buried in pumice during one of Hekla Volcano's 

bigger eruptions in 1104. A leisurely hike brings us to Gjáin, a green oasis in an 

otherwise rocky, barren moon-like landscape. Þjórsárdalur is off-the-beaten-path 

and is dominated by Hekla, one of Iceland's most active volcanoes. 

Please note that in case Landmannalaugar is not accessible during June 

departures we travel only to Þjórsárdalur valley on that day. 

Day 4, WED: GOLDEN CIRCLE Today, we explore Þingvellir, a national park 

and UNESCO world heritage site, followed by Geysir hot springs and Gullfoss 

waterfall. After the three "must-see" sights on the Golden Circle route, we add 

a little extra. There is a small waterfall called Faxi, and nearby we visit a 

traditional sheep pen, and Skálholt, which is one of Iceland's most historic and 

holy places. 

Day 5, THU: WESTMAN ISLANDS Short ferry ride to the Westman Islands, 

where we explore bird cliffs, walk up a volcano crater and visit „Pompeii of the 

North“, a volcanic excavation project. There you observe a “house” which was 

dug up from the thick layer of pumice after 40 years. You have the afternoon 

free to wander around the town of Heimaey, with its birds and signs of recent 

volcanic eruptions. In the evening we travel to our accommodation near the 

village of Vík in South Iceland, where we stay for two nights. 

Day 6, FRI: VATNAJÖKULL GLACIER Today we travel to Vatnajökull, 

Europe’s second largest national park, which has Iceland’s highest mountains, 

an alpine environment, and Europe’s largest glacier. We hike to Svartifoss 

waterfall. In the afternoon we head over to the famous Jökulsárlón glacier 

lagoon for a cruise, sailing between the icebergs of all shapes and sizes, which 

float in the clear blue water. 

Day 7, SAT: GLACIER HIKE & SOUTH COAST We start the day with a 

walk along the black lava beach and bird cliffs at Reynisfjara, see interesting 

basalt columns and rock formations. Next, we stop for an easy 1,5 to 2-hour 

glacier hike on the impressive Sólheimajökull glacier tongue. We continue to the 

thundering Skógafoss waterfall and stop at Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where you 

can follow a slick and wet trail right behind the falls. The Best of South Iceland 

program ends with a short Reykjavík city tour before we reach the hotel in 

Iceland’s capital city.

Day 1, TUE: WELCOME TO ICELAND Arrive in Reykjavík and make your 

own way to our group hotel. 

Day 2, WED: EMBARK THE GREG MORTIMER & EXPLORE HVAL- 

FJÖRÐUR After breakfast at the hotel, a transfer is included to the pier to board 

the ship, the Greg Mortimer. Sail into Hvalfjörður, a beautiful fjord just north of 

Reykjavík with wide areas of flat verdant land along majestic mountains, and 

beaches cut with creeks. The area is rich in bird life and is home to seals, perfect 

for Zodiac cruising, kayaking and hikes. 

Day 3, THU: SNÆFELLSNES & LÁTRABJARG Today we explore the 

Snæfellsnes Peninsula where volcanic craters, lava flows, an ice cap, mountains, 

fjords, sandy beaches and high bird cliffs shape the landscape. En route to 

Patreksfjörður, we sail past the immense Látrabjarg cliffs, Iceland’s westernmost 

point and home to a huge population of razorbills and puffins. 

Day 4 & 5, FRI & SAT: WEST FJORDS Over the next two days, explore the 

Westfjords region featuring outstanding landscapes with jaw-dropping views of 

dramatic fjords and the attractive Dynjandi waterfall. The spectacular fjords offer 

kayaking excursions, hiking trails, and birdwatching. 

Day 6, SUN: AKUREYRI, LAKE MÝVATN & HÚSAVÍK From picturesque 

Akureyri we offer two different shore excursions. Option One includes Goðafoss 

waterfall, Lake Mývatn, Námaskarð hot springs, Dettifoss waterfall and the 

horseshoe shaped canyon called Ásbyrgi. Option Two includes a longer tour of 

Akureyri and its botanical garden, Goðafoss waterfall, Lake Mývatn, Dimmuborgir 

lava labyrinth, Námaskarð hot springs and soaking in the geothermal Mývatn 

Nature Baths. Both options end at Húsavík, the whale watching capital of Europe. 

If you are lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the many whale species in these 

waters. 

Day 7, MON: GRÍMSEY ISLAND Located off Iceland’s north coast, Grímsey 

is probably best known for its proximity to the Arctic Circle, which cuts across the 

island. Many people travel to Grímsey just to say they have stepped across the 

imaginary line. It’s a fantastic place for Zodiac cruising, kayaking, and 

photographing seabirds such as guillemots, gulls and puffins. 

Day 8, TUE: MJÓIFJÖRÐUR Our next stop is Mjóifjörður, located on 

Iceland’s east coast. It is a little-known gem cherished by locals, hidden between 

mountains with spectacular waterfalls – ideal for kayaking and Zodiac cruising. 

Day 9, WED: VATNAJÖKULL NATIONAL PARK Höfn is a lively fishing 

town, and gateway for our shore excursion to Vatnajökull National Park and home 

to Europe’s largest glacier. The park is excellent for hiking and boasts colourful 

mountains and deep valleys, as well as rich birdlife, reindeers and seals. We stop 

at Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, filled with floating icebergs that wash up on shore 

at the Diamond beach. 

Day 10, THU: WESTMAN ISLANDS Located off Iceland’s south coast, we 

sail past Surtsey Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site that emerged from the sea 

in 1963. The Westman Islands are an archipelago of 15 uninhabited islands 

which are considered to have the largest Atlantic puffin colony in the world. When 

sailing around the islands it is not uncommon to see puffins but also whales and 

seals. Heimaey is the main island in the archipelago where we visit the 

impressive Eldheimar Museum to learn about the 1973 volcanic eruption. 

Day 11, FRI: REYKJAVÍK After breakfast, bid farewell to the expedition team, 

crew and newfound friends as you disembark in Reykjavík, where the voyage 

ends. A transfer to downtown Reykjavík or to Keflavík airport is included. 

NOTE: Zodiacs are a vital part of getting up close and personal on your 

adventure. On this new ship, there are specially designed launching 

platforms that enables to load Zodiacs easily and quickly, allowing you to 

spend more time exploring on the two to three daily landings.

NORTHERN LIGHTS The Northern Lights are 

visible in the northern sky from September through 

April when the sky is clear and free of clouds. The 

tour is dependent on weather and therefore 

sightings are not guaranteed. Like many natural 

wonders, it is an ephemeral spectacle – the 

Northern Lights may be visible, they may appear for 

a bit and then be gone (it is not a TV show that you 

can just turn on and off). But it is worth the patience 

which is much required. Because they are a winter 

event, you need to be prepared to wait outside while 

looking for them. It is best to dress very warmly, in 

layers, with good footwear, gloves, hats and 

whatever else makes you comfortable while you 

await this truly outstanding event. For the best 

photos we recommend using a tripod.

Day 1: WELCOME TO ICELAND FLYBUS shuttle to Reykjavík. 

Day 2: REYKJAVIK CITY TOUR & BORGARFJÖRÐUR SAGA VALLEY 

Meet our tour guide and start with a Reykjavík city tour. Then we head west. 

Borgarfjörður is known as the Saga valley because of its many important 

historical events. We get a chance to climb a volcano crater and visit Europe's 

most powerful hot spring. Hraunfossar is a series of waterfalls pouring from 

beneath a wide lava field. We spend two nights in Borgarnes, West Iceland. The 

afternoon includes a lecture about Northern Lights. After dinner, we step into the 

hotel garden in search of the Northern Lights followed by a hot cup of chocolate 

or tea. 

Day 3: SNÆFELLSNES PENINSULA & FJORD CRUISE We travel to the 

picturesque fishing town of Stykkishólmur on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula for a 

cruise in the Breiðafjörður fjord. A uniquely Icelandic “treat“ awaits us at 

Bjarnarhöfn, where they make Hákarl - the fermented shark. Naturally, once 

darkness falls, we are out in the hotel garden to chase the Northern Lights and to 

soak in the hotel’s outdoor hot tubs. 

Day 4: GOLDEN CIRCLE, GEOTHERMAL TASTE & ICELANDIC 

HORSES Today we travel along the scenic shores of Hvalfjörður fjord and turn 

inland to Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site. We continue to 

Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir geothermal fields, where you can taste freshly 

baked hot spring bread, geothermally boiled eggs and herring. In the afternoon, 

we visit a horse stable and a geothermal greenhouse, before we reach the 

accommodation in South Iceland. Tonight’s search for the elusive Northern Lights 

is amidst the peace and stillness of rural Iceland. 

Day 5: NATURAL WONDERS OF SOUTH ICELAND & EYJAFJALLA- 

JÖKULL VOLCANO Today we travel along the South coast. At the Lava & 

Volcano Information Center we learn about living with active volcanoes. 

Skógafoss waterfall is 62 meters high and one of the most impressive waterfalls 

in the country. It is near one of Iceland's finest folk museums with turf-built 

houses. Next we take a stroll on the black lava beach at Reynisfjara in South 

Iceland. We spend 2 nights in the Vatnajökull National Park region, located in 

complete darkness and ideal for Northern Lights search. 

Day 6: SKAFTAFELL NATIONAL PARK & VATNAJÖKULL GLACIER 

Today’s program: glaciers, ice and icebergs. We travel to Jökulsárlón, a glacial 

lagoon filled with floating icebergs, and we explore the extraordinary site and 

might see seals swimming in arctic waters. In the afternoon we visit the tiny turf 

church at Hof and spend time at Europe’s second- largest national park, which 

has Iceland’s highest mountains, an alpine environment, and Europe's largest 

glacier. In the evening enjoy a film presentation about the Northern Lights as part 

of the Northern Lights Academy program. Be careful not to go to bed too soon in 

this remote and quiet location or you may just miss out one more chance of 

seeing the Northern Lights shimmering and dancing across the night sky. 

Day 7: SOUTH SHORE, REYKJAVÍK & BLUE LAGOON We head across 

the Laki lava field to the village of Vík, where we make a photo stop and walk 

along the black lava beach with lively bird cliffs. The next stop is at the high but 

narrow Seljalandsfoss waterfall. In the afternoon we return to Reykjavik and have 

about 2 hour leisure time to explore Iceland's capital on our own, visit museums, 

do some shopping or simply rest after all this touring. In the evening we get to 

soak in the famous Blue Lagoon. After an Icelandic farewell dinner at a local 

restaurant, we go on one last nocturnal tour to seek the Northern Lights. 

Day 8: DEPARTURE HOME FLYBUS shuttle to Keflavík airport.

Iceland's exciting capital city. Then head out to the Reykjanes Peninsula with its 

hot springs, mountains, bird cliffs, light houses and fishing villages. At the end of 

the day, soak in the warm mineral rich waters of the Blue Lagoon. We stay two 

nights in simple cabins in South Iceland. There is an option to upgrade to studio 

rooms at the Stracta Hotel in Hella. In the evening, we hear about the Northern 

Lights from our tour guide at Árhús Cabins. Naturally, once darkness falls, you 

are out in the garden waiting for the Northern Lights. 

Day 3, THU or SAT: SOUTH ICELAND WITH OPTIONAL GLACIER 

HIKE Today we head along the south coast and reach the area near the active 

volcano that is beneath the Eyjafjallajökull glacier. We stop at the high but narrow 

Seljalandsfoss waterfall, which plunges from the mountain. Next we visit Skógar 

folk museum, which contains an outstanding collection of farm and domestic 

artifacts from Iceland's past and several turf-built houses. Nearby is one of the 

most impressive waterfalls in the country; the 62 meter high Skógafoss waterfall. 

In the afternoon we offer an optional glacier walk. The Sólheimajökull glacier 

tongue extends from the great Mýrdalsjökull glacier, down to the sandy plains of 

the Icelandic south coast. The spectacular surroundings are marked by rugged 

and majestic rock formations thoroughly shaped by the glacier. On this fun, safe 

and easy to moderate glacier walk you get to explore the wonderland of ice 

sculptures, water cauldrons, ridges and deep crevasses on the breath-taking 

Sólheimajökull glacier. If you booked the trip without the glacier hike, then the 

tour continues further south were you can stroll on the black lava beach to see 

the amazing bird cliffs at Reynisfjara near Vík. In the evening there is another 

presentation about the Northern Lights. If the night is clear, you might see the 

Northern Lights swirling in a wild and carefree dance across the heavens in 

dramatic shapes, colours, patterns and sizes. 

Day 4, FRI or SUN: HORSES & GOLDEN CIRCLE In the morning you learn 

about the Icelandic horse, its special qualities and history and visit a geothermal 

greenhouse. Travel the Golden Circle route. See steam rising from the Geysir 

geothermal fields as you arrive. There is a variety of hot springs and bubbling 

pools. Strokkur, "the Churn", erupts at 5-10 minute intervals. Continue on to 

Gullfoss, a double waterfall that tumbles 34 meters into the Hvítá River and

Day 1, SUN: WELCOME TO ICELAND FLYBUS shuttle to Reykjavík. 

Day 2, MON: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE ROUTE Meet our tour guide and start 

the escorted tour program with a short city tour around Reykjavík. We explore the 

Golden Circle route. The first stop is at Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO world 

heritage site. Þingvellir is one of Iceland's most fascinating historical and 

geological places. The site is situated on the boundaries of the tectonic plates of 

the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The faults and fissures of the area make the rifting of the 

earth's crust evident. Exploring the hot springs at Geysir is like watching a 

geography lesson in real life: natural springs bubble away in the ground until the 

pressure becomes too high and explode spectacularly. Geysir and Strokkur are 

the two biggest of the geysers there. While Geysir no longer is active, Strokkur 

still spouts every 5 to 10 minutes to the delight of visitors. Next we travel to 

Gullfoss, a double waterfall that tumbles 34 meters into a canyon. Kerið is a 

caldera with a crater lake at the bottom and which resembles an ancient 

amphitheatre. In the evening, you hear about the Northern Lights from our tour 

guide. Naturally, once darkness falls, we are out in the garden waiting for the 

Northern Lights. We stay for one night in South Iceland. 

Day 3, TUE: VATNAJÖKULL NATIONAL PARK & GLACIER LAGOON A 

long drive brings us to a world of glaciers, ice and icebergs. We travel to 

Jökulsárlón, a glacial lagoon filled with floating icebergs. We explore this 

extraordinary site and perhaps see some seals swimming in the arctic waters. 

You can walk on the black sands of the so-called Diamond beach where large 

icebergs get stranded. The Vatnajökull National Park is about 12,000 square 

kilometers and it is the second-largest national park in Europe. In this area we 

find Iceland’s highest mountains, an alpine environment and Europe's largest 

glacier. After dinner we show a movie about Northern Lights as part of the 

Northern Lights educational program. Be careful not to go to bed too soon in this 

remote and quiet location, or you may just miss out one more chance of seeing 

the Northern Lights shimmering and dancing across the night sky. We stay for 

one night in the Vatnajökull region. 

From mid-November to mid-March an optional ice cave visit at Vatnajökull glacier 

is offered; which can only be booked and paid with the tour guide on day 2 of the 

tour. 

Day 4, WED: SOUTH COAST & ICELANDIC LAVA SHOW We head 

across the Eldhraun lava field to the village of Vík where we attend the stunning 

Icelandic lava show; the only exhibition in the world where you can experience 

actual flowing lava! By melting lava and pouring it on ice in a room full of people, 

you’ll be able to see the lava flowing, hear it sizzling, and feel the heat that 

radiates from it. In the afternoon we take a stroll on the black lava beach and 

along the bird cliffs at Reynisfjara in South Iceland. We pass the glacier 

Mýrdalsjökull and the infamous volcano Eyjafjallajökull and continue to Skógafoss 

waterfall which is 62 meters high and belongs to the most impressive waterfalls 

in the country. Further west we reach the high but narrow Seljalandsfoss 

waterfall. In the evening you return to Reykjavik. An optional Northern Lights bus 

tour or fjord cruise can be booked on the spot, if the weather conditions are ideal. 

We stay one night in Iceland's capital.

NORTHERN LIGHTS On 2 evenings this program 

offers a combination of presentations, lectures, film 

and guided searches for the northern lights in the

The tour is dependent on weather and therefore 

Northern Lights sightings are not guaranteed. The 

Northern Lights are in the northern hemisphere from 

September through April but are only visible when 

the sky is clear and free of clouds. Like many natural 

wonders, the Northern Lights are ephemeral – they 

may be visible, they may appear for a bit and then be 

gone (it is not a TV show that you can just turn on 

and off). But it is worth the patience which is much 

required. Because they are a winter event, you need 

to be prepared to wait outside while looking for 

them. It is best to dress very warmly, in layers, with 

good footwear, gloves, hats and whatever else will 

make you comfortable while you patiently await this 

truly outstanding light show. For the best photos we 

recommend using a tripod.

Day 1, THU: ICELAND HIDDEN GEMS At 09:30 meet your fun, interesting

venture out to enjoy glorious landscapes that aim to leave you in awe. Truly look,

enjoyed for a while before they become overly popular. We visit small towns, tiny 

villages, rural countryside and Mother Nature. We go slow, we stop where others 

rush by, because these hidden places and gems are everywhere; we just make 

that extra effort to find them for you. Overnight in the countryside and in the 

evening we require patience, warm clothing and the excitement of “maybe there 

could be Northern Lights”. 

Day 3, SAT: ICELAND HIDDEN GEMS Again, a day full of stunning 

scenery, incredible nature and authentic Icelandic experiences. We take you to 

places fewer people get to visit, places where real people live and amazingly have 

survived the harsh climate and nature over the centuries. Light walks are the 

perfect speed to enjoy the landscape, and experience the subtle changes in 

scenery, culture, menus, weather and everything else that makes Iceland 

brilliant. Bring along an open mind, lots of curiosity, a bit of adventure spirit,

ITINERARY 

Day 1, FRI: WELCOME to ICELAND FLYBUS shuttle to Reykjavík. 

Day 2, SAT: WEST ICELAND Meet the tour guide and travel west, passing 

the town of Borgarnes and climb the Grábrók volcano crater. Visit a natural 

history & seal museum, stop at the turf church of Víðimýri and continue along 

scenic fjord landscape and over several mountain passes to Akureyri. 

Day 3, SUN: NORTH ICELAND Explore Akureyri, the capital of North Iceland 

and travel to Goðafoss, the waterfalls of the Gods. Continue to Lake Mývatn 

which is known for its geological wonders and active bird life during summer. 

Stop at bizarre lava formations, walk around pseudo craters and soak at Mývatn 

Nature Baths. Overnight at Lake Mývatn. 

Day 4, MON: TRAVEL EAST Hike in a lava labyrinth at Dimmuborgir, visit the 

hot spring area of Námaskarð with bubbling mud pools and steaming solfataras 

and travel to Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall. Head through the 

uninhabited highlands and moonlike surroundings to East Iceland. 

Day 5, TUE: EAST FJORDS It's a day to admire the dramatic fjord landscape 

and its tiny fishing villages at the end of twisty roads in the East Fjords. Visit an 

interesting stone & mineral collection and overnight in Höfn. 

Day 6, WED: VATNAJÖKULL & SOUTH COAST Start the day at Jökulsárlón, 

a glacial lagoon filled with floating icebergs. We spend some time at 

Europe’s second-largest national park, which has Iceland’s highest mountains, 

an alpine environment and Europe’s largest glacier. In the afternoon, a beautiful 

drive with many natural wonders awaits us: lava fields, sandy deserts, mountainous 

cliffs, glaciers, black lava beaches and waterfalls. Overnight location is in South 

Iceland, near Hvolsvöllur. 

Day 7, THU: ICELANDIC HORSES & GOLDEN CIRCLE At Friðheimar 

learn about the Icelandic horse, its special qualities and history and visit a 

geothermal greenhouse. Explore Geysir geothermal fields with a variety of hot 

springs and bubbling pools. Gullfoss is a double waterfall that tumbles 34 meters 

into the Hvítá river and Þingvellir National Park is a UNESCO world heritage site. 

Short city tour in Reykjavík and 2-night stay in Iceland’s capital. 

Day 8, FRI: LEISURE DAY IN REYKJAVIK or optional super jeep tour to 

Þórsmörk glacial valley. 

Day 9, SAT: TRAVEL TO WEST GREENLAND Airport transfer and flight 

from Reykjavik to Ilulissat. Transfer and welcome meeting at 4-star Hotel Arctic. 

Guided city walk of Ilulissat, welcome dinner and sunset cruise to the famous 

Ilulissat Icefiord that is the world's largest ice sculpture park. 

Day 10, SUN: HUNTER’S SETTLEMENT & WAHLE WATCHING Travel 

by boat to the small settlement Ilimanaq, still dependent on hunting and fishing – 

a quite different world compared to the nearby town of Ilulissat. After a local 

lunch, cruise the Disko Bay for whale watching. 

Day 11, MON: INUIT SETTLEMENT AT ILULISSAT ICEFIORD Guided 

walking tour to the old Inuit settlement in the Sermermiut valley on the famous 

Ilulissat Icefiord that was inscribed on UNESCO's world heritage list in 2004. 

Learn about local history and Inuit customs and admire the views across the 

majestic icebergs. Rest of the day free at leisure to hike along the Icefiord and 

explore the town of Ilulissat. Farewell dinner at Hotel Arctic. 

Day 12, TUE: TRAVEL BACK TO ICELAND Spend some time in the 

morning to explore the town of Ilulissat and last minute Greenland shopping. 

Return by flight to Reykjavik and stay 2 nights in Iceland’s capital.

ITINERARY 

Day 1: WELCOME to ICELAND Private transfer from Keflavík International 

Airport to a 4-star hotel in the center of Reykjavík, where you spend 2 nights. 

Day 2: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE Iceland is spectacular and so is the Golden 

Circle route. Experience wide open volcanic landscapes. Visit the ancient Viking 

Parliament area of Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site, and 

the place where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet - and are 

moving apart. There is a widening fissure in the ground where the planet is 

literally opening up. Next stop is Gullfoss, a double waterfall that tumbles 34 

meters into a glacial river and attracts travellers all year. Nearby are the Geysir 

geothermal fields. Sheer power of water and steam erupts and really makes you 

realize how alive the ground is beneath our feet. 

Day 3: TRAVEL TO WEST GREENLAND Private airport transfer in Reykjavík. 

A 3-hour flight brings you to Ilulissat in West Greenland, 300 kilometres north of 

the Polar Circle. Transfer and welcome meeting at 4-star Hotel Arctic. Enjoy a 

guided city walk of Ilulissat and afterwards you have some time to explore the 

town, visit the local museum and observe Greenlandic life at the always busy 

harbour. There is hardly any place in Ilulissat where there is no view of either the 

Icefiord, the Disko Bay or another natural gem. After dinner, depart for a sunset 

cruise to the famous Ilulissat Icefiord which is the world's largest ice sculpture 

park. The experience is overwhelming as lights and colours change constantly. 

Day 4: THE CALVING GLACIER & HUNTER’S VILLAGE Early morning 

departure by boat to Eqi – the calving glacier, which runs into the fjord 80 km 

north of Ilulissat and is one of the most beautiful places in Greenland. It is 

possible to get very close to the 5-km wide glacier front and see huge pieces of 

ice breaking off. The sound of an active calving glacier is quite remarkable while 

the sight of icebergs toppling into the water is breathtaking. Continue to the small 

settlement of Oqaatsut/Rodebay. The local population of about 40 people is 

dependent on fishing and hunting. Guided walk through the village which lies in 

a beautiful natural setting; see the school, church and shop. Enjoy a local meal at 

the old trading station, which for hundreds of years was a stopover place for 

Dutch whalers, who dragged the huge whales onto land here in the old village. 

Day 5: INUIT SETTLEMENT AT ILULISSAT ICEFIORD Guided walking 

tour to the old Inuit settlement in the Sermermiut valley, on the famous Ilulissat 

Icefiord, which was inscribed on UNESCO's world heritage list in 2004 because 

of its outstanding glaciology and natural beauty. Learn about local history and 

Inuit customs and admire the views across the majestic icebergs. The Icefiord is 

about 65-70 km long. It is densely packed with floating icebergs and ice floes, 

which are slowly pushed out through the fjord. Sit down and try listening for the 

many different sounds of the ice. This is nature at its best. The rest of the day is 

free at leisure to hike along the Icefiord and explore the town of Ilulissat. Farewell 

dinner at Hotel Arctic. 

Day 6: TRAVEL BACK TO ICELAND Explore the town of Ilulissat in the 

morning and do a bit of last minute Greenland shopping. Return by flight to 

Reykjavík. Private transfer to a downtown hotel in Iceland’s capital, where you 

spend 2 nights. 

Day 7: BLUE LAGOON & REYKJAVÍK Bus transfer to the Blue Lagoon 

where you can relax in its rejuvenating mineral rich geothermal water, believed to 

have healing powers. The afternoon is free at leisure to explore Reykjavík, 

Iceland's capital, or enjoy optional spa treatments at the Blue Lagoon. 

Day 8: DEPARTURE HOME Private transfer from your accommodation in
