The women of Chalet share ‘3 S’s’ of their success<br />
Sassy – that was my nickname through<br />
third grade, dubbed by my younger sister<br />
who couldn’t pronounce Sandy.<br />
It was in the third grade that one of<br />
my classmates called me “sassy pants.” I<br />
didn’t like the connotation and the 8-yearold<br />
me squashed it. Sassy never really<br />
went away though, as its true meaning is<br />
one of the three S’s that make me and the<br />
women of Chalet leaders in a field that<br />
used to predominantly be led by men.<br />
1. Smart – with both scholarly and<br />
practical knowledge.<br />
2. Supportive Leaders – Chalet’s<br />
value statement defined as being:<br />
visionary, accountable, learners and<br />
teachers, listeners, givers of great service,<br />
mutually respectful and grateful.<br />
3. Sassy – lively, bold, confident, unapologetic<br />
and full of spirit.<br />
It’s these three S’s – alive, in action,<br />
and balanced - that make women successful<br />
at Chalet. Our ownership gives us<br />
freedom and confidence to be the technical<br />
experts that we are – and to apply<br />
that knowledge in our work. Our leadership<br />
demands that we live out the values<br />
of Supportive Leaders, holding each<br />
other accountable and designating it as a<br />
competency in our annual performance<br />
review process. Our individual spirits are<br />
sassy – lively, bold, happy and engaging.<br />
Being intelligent is important, but it<br />
isn’t everything. Having good values is<br />
the foundation for all human beings, but<br />
without action, values are wasted. And<br />
sassy alone – well, that can lead to the<br />
8-year-old sassy pants that I am quite sure<br />
I was. It is truly when all three are partnered<br />
together that a well-rounded leader<br />
emerges.<br />
I encourage you to embrace all three<br />
of these important qualities and bring<br />
them in partnership into your work. To<br />
help you envision the kind of successful<br />
woman I am talking about, think of the<br />
combination of Marie Curie, Joan of Arc<br />
and Coco Chanel — three smart, supportive<br />
and sassy women, all of whom were<br />
successful in their own right.<br />
Oh my goodness – did I just compare<br />
the women of Chalet to them? I did! We<br />
are all that and more – how else would<br />
you expect a sassy, smart and supportive<br />
woman to finish this article?<br />
