INSIDE LEFT: TAMPLIN & SONS, 1920S ....................................................................................... It’s inspection time for the Tamplin & Sons draymen, standing ‘at ease’ in rather military fashion, in front of the Phoenix Brewery, with their marvellous horses. We don’t know the exact date: the James Gray archive notes read, simply, ‘1920s’. Theirs was a vital job: delivering beer brewed on the site to the 200+ pubs owned by the company, throughout Brighton and Hove. Tamplin & Sons was set up in 1820, by Richard and Henry Tamplin. Their first brewery, in Southwick, burnt down within a year, so they built a second between Southover Street and Albion Street. At the bottom of Hanover. Designed by Amon and his son Amon Henry Wilds, it opened for business in 1821. It was named ‘Phoenix’ as it had risen from the ashes of the previous brewery, and the mythical bird became the symbol of the company. You can still see the Phoenix logo in the brickwork of a handful of pubs in town. Tamplin & Sons grew and grew, over the years, swallowing up rival breweries and taking over their pubs, eventually owning over half the hostelries in town, and producing over five million gallons of beer a year. The brewery was itself taken over, by Watneys, in 1953, but until 1969 the London giants continued brewing beer for the area using the ‘Tamplins’ brand. Between 1969 and 1973, when the Phoenix Brewery was demolished, they brewed their own keg bitter there. The site was redeveloped in the 1990s and now houses a University of Brighton student residence building, named ‘Phoenix Brewery’. Two adjoining streets – Phoenix Rise and Tamplins Terrace – also acknowledge the area’s boozy history, as does the Phoenix Brighton art centre. The brewery’s former office building still stands, now the Phoenix Community Centre. Look to the far right of the picture, and you can see a curious figure poking his head out of the doorway at the foot of the building. Was this chap surprised to see the photographer at work, or was he cheekily trying to get into shot? He lends this rather serious image a welcome touch of humour: buy the man a pint.
