Welcome... 

Last month saw the fringe, trail and festival – 

Wanstead’s annual trio of community-spirited 

activities – delight residents and visitors alike. 

The full event titles are never needed. We know 

the fringe means a mix of theatre, comedy, music 

and the arts. We know the trail means a diverse 

display of artistic creations. We know the festival 

means a community celebration… and a nun 

driving a mobile piano. They are our three singlename 

celebrities, the Madonna, Cher and Shakira of 

Wanstead. What a mark of success to be known by a 

single name! 

“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other name 

would smell as sweet.” True as that may be, the Bard obviously 

overlooked the power of being mononymous. Shakespeare 

himself, Madonna, Cher and Shakira, even Napoleon. Five 

names that require no more detail to convey an identity. Five 

personalities encapsulated by a single moniker. Five people that 

by any other name would be a little more… anonymous. 

Or perhaps, Shakira et al do in fact prove William’s point. By 

any other name Madonna would, of course, still be in vogue, 

Napoleon would have still met his Waterloo and Cher would still 

believe in life after love. Names are important, but the people 

behind them more so. As Shakespeare tells us, a name is “nor 

hand, nor foot, nor arm, nor face, nor any other part belonging to 

a man.” It’s substance over style, actions over words, content over 

hype. What you are is more important than who you are. 

So, as we look forward to future fringes, trails 

and festivals – or Madonna, Cher and 

Shakira tour dates – we can be confident 

they will each live up to their 

(unimportant) name.

The Wanstead Fringe provided an ideal 

opportunity to revisit the popularity of 

last November’s local World Kindness Day 

celebrations. “The Fringe started with Elsa 

hosting a ceramic workshop, making kindness 

messages to be displayed at various shops. 

We were also at the festival, where we had a 

kindness tree again… We’ve got lots more 

exciting things happening this year, so watch 

this space!” said Mark Mountney of Zoology 

hair salon, who organised the activities with 

anti-bullying ambassador Elsa Arnold. 

Spring-flowering bulb giveaway and 

planting weekend this month 

Redbridge Council has installed a hi-tech 

Bigbelly bin on Snaresbrook Road as part of 

work undertaken with residents and the City 

of London to clear up Eagle Pond. “It’s a smart 

bin that can accommodate more rubbish, 

lets the council know when it’s full, requires 

emptying less often and reduces the risk of 

litter blowing out and into the pond,” said 

Councillor Jo Blackman. Big Belly bins hold 

roughly eight times more rubbish than a 

regular bin and compact waste automatically 

throughout the day.

spring-flowering bulbs to the community this 

month, encouraging everyone to plant them 

as part of the Big Bulb Planting Weekend (18

in spaces that benefit the community,” said 

a spokesperson. The bulbs – which include 

daffodils, tulips and crocuses – must be

Redbridge Council has doubled the amount 

of time drivers can park for free on the 

borough’s high streets from 30 minutes to one 

hour. “This will be a real boost for our high 

streets and help revitalise the local economy 

whilst making sure there is still a good level 

of turnover in parking bays – giving as many 

people as possible the opportunity to use 

parking spaces to pop to the shops,” said 

Councillor Jas Athwal. Motorists can activate 

the free on-street parking via the Ringo app or 

at an upgraded pay and display machine.

The magic of panto and storytelling will 

come to Wanstead Library this month with a 

performance by drag queen Mama G. “Created 

by panto dame Robert Pearce, Mama G tells 

stories about being who you are and loving 

who you want, to children and their families,

difference’ will take place on 2 October from

has broken ground on its latest project on 

Gardner Close in Wanstead. “Pocket Living will 

transform the disused garage site into a twostorey 

building offering 20 affordable onebedroom 

homes for first-time buyers – with 

a 20% discount off the full market value,” said 

a spokesperson. Pocket Living’s commitment 

to delivering affordable housing has been 

backed by the Mayor of London, who in 2017 

provided the company with a £25m loan to 

develop sites like Gardner Close.

The Environment Agency has announced a 

day of community engagement as part of the 

River Roding Project, which aims to improve 

local river defences. “Heavy rain has caused 

the river to flood the local area eight times in 

the past 100 years,” said a spokesperson. The 

project involves the construction of a flood 

storage area to hold back high flows upstream 

in rural Essex. Residents are invited to find 

out more and give their views at Woodford 

Station, Snakes Lane East on 17 October from

An aspiring young actor from Wanstead has 

spoken of his enjoyment after being cast 

in a professional production of The Railway 

Children for last month’s Wanstead Fringe. 

“There was never a dull moment and I couldn’t 

have wished for a better experience, from latenight 

rehearsals to the adrenaline rush before 

each show! I learnt so much from working 

with such a warm, friendly and professional 

cast,” said 14-year-old Dashiell Ratcliffe. “There 

was a lovely family bond working with a cast 

so closely, and I already miss the buzz of it all!” 

Cricket club to install defibrillator 

following member’s heart attack

A defibrillator will be installed at Wanstead 

and Snaresbrook Cricket Club following a 

heart attack suffered by scorer John Pluck, 

whose life was saved by the quick action 

of fellow club members and the use of a 

defibrillator from neighbouring Linkside Lawn 

Tennis Club. “The club is pleased to advise that 

John is making good progress. The club would 

like to place on record the heroic efforts of Joe 

Ellis-Grewal, Pinder Grewal, Ben Phillips, Paul 

Baily and Jayden Rising, among others, who 

saved John’s life,” said a spokesperson.

William Shakespeare’s London haunts will 

be the subject of this month’s Wanstead 

Park Women’s Club meeting. “This talk has 

developed out of a walk I have led a number 

of times through and around the City of 

London, where we explore the places that

lead a walk around Snaresbrook this month 

looking at the evidence for commuters. 

“We begin at Snaresbrook Station, where 

the railway first came in 1856, changing the 

nature of the village from a predominantly 

Georgian settlement to a bustling Victorian 

suburb. There is still evidence of the Great 

Eastern Railway, hardly noticed by passengers 

on the busy Central Line,” said Lynn. The free

In last month’s Wanstead Village Directory, 

you might have read Iain Ambler’s 

update on attempts to rewild (restore 

an area of land to its natural state) parts 

of Wanstead as a way of improving 

biodiversity in the area. 

Our survey of the trial site on George Green 

revealed more than 80 species – highlighting 

the importance of allowing small areas of

Tackling Crime 

Wanstead Village ward councillors Jo Blackman, Daniel Morgan-Thomas and 

Paul Donovan discuss crime and the work they do to keep crime rates 

low, and urge residents to engage with local police 

Rates of reported crime are relatively 

low in Wanstead Village. Social 

media can exaggerate the risk of 

crime as we can hear more quickly about 

incidents that we wouldn’t otherwise be 

aware of. 

But every crime committed is one too many, 

and as Wanstead Village councillors, we are 

doing all we can to make our ward even safer. 

Central government cuts have had a drastic 

impact on policing levels as well as the level 

of support provided to vulnerable people and 

young people. 

We have campaigned for more resources for 

our local police and were pleased to hear that 

there is now a full team of two police officers 

(PC Paul Spencer and PC Hannah Vincent) and 

one community support officer (PCSO Shyam 

Aubeelack) after a period of reduced capacity. 

One area where the council can help is 

with CCTV and automatic number plate 

recognition (ANPR) cameras. We were 

pleased to hear that CCTV and ANPR cameras 

recently installed by the council following 

requests from us and the police have proved 

an effective deterrent locally, and we have 

identified other cameras in need of an 

upgrade in our ward. 

We meet regularly with the local police and 

can raise concerns where residents contact us 

with specific points about problem areas. We 

also regularly attend Neighbourhood Watch 

meetings to follow up local issues. 

We encourage all members of the 

public to ensure all crimes are reported, 

otherwise it is impossible for us or the police 

to follow up.

Even if the police are unable to respond 

immediately, reports help them identify 

patterns of behaviour, target patrols to certain 

areas and build up their intelligence. 

The local police hold regular drop-in sessions, 

which are an opportunity to raise any local 

concerns. These are detailed on the Wanstead 

Village Directory event listings pages. 

Residents are also welcome to attend our 

advice service, which takes place at 10am 

on the second and fourth Saturday of every 

month at the vestry, Christ Church. 

Working together, the community, council 

and police can help tackle crime in Wanstead

Meet and… Greet? 

On 3 October, Wanstead residents will get the chance to quiz 

London City Airport representatives about their expansion proposals. 

John Stewart of campaign group HACAN East reports 

London City Airport has extended 

the consultation on its expansion 

proposals in its draft Master Plan to 

18 October. The airport wants to almost 

double flight numbers from today’s levels, 

end the 24-hour weekend break and bring 

in more planes in the early morning and 

late evening. 

The proposals have proved highly 

controversial. The Mayor of Newham called 

the draft Master Plan “fundamentally flawed”. 

Other local authorities have come out against 

the proposals and local residents from 

many parts of London have been sending in 

objections. Climate change activists have also 

raised big concerns. 

London City Airport does seem to have 

miscalculated just how much opposition 

its proposals would generate. When the 

consultation ends, it will look at the responses 

and publish a final Master Plan towards the 

end of this year. If it does decide to take any 

of the proposals forward, the airport will need 

to draw up a detailed planning application to 

Newham Council, the planning authority for 

the airport. It will be required to consult on its 

proposals before submitting the application. 

It means the earliest any application is likely to 

be considered will be the middle of next year. 

London City Airport has also been asked 

to look again at its flight paths. It narrowed 

and concentrated all its flight paths in 2016, 

resulting in a five-fold increase in complaints 

to the airport. Parts of Wanstead are directly 

under these flight paths. The flight paths will 

be reconsidered whether or not expansion 

takes place. It is part of wider airspace changes 

taking place at all airports in London and the 

South East as air traffic controllers move to a 

satellite system to guide planes. 

London City Airport expects to consult on 

options for altered flight paths in 2021. Almost 

certainly, one of the options it will put forward 

will be for flight paths to be rotated during 

the day to give communities a break from 

the noise. This would tie in with Heathrow’s 

commitment when it introduces its new flight 

paths to give all communities a break from 

the noise each day. These flight path changes 

bring some hope for people in Wanstead but 

they are unlikely to be introduced until about 

2024. The reason for the delay is that changing 

flight paths at all airports in London and the 

South East is a complex task as the airspace is 

among the busiest in the world. 

In the immediate term, though, the concern 

is London City’s proposals for expansion. You 

can find more details about these, plus some 

handy hints on making a response, on our 

website.

As part of Black History Month events taking place locally in October, 

chef Lyndon Wissart will be explaining how he managed to cure his 

Type 2 diabetes in 105 days… without medication 

My name is Lyndon Wissart and I 

am from London. I have recently 

undertaken a journey, which 

has involved tackling and overcoming 

struggles with my health. 

In 2015 I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, 

with indications that I was in a danger zone 

with the symptoms involved. Since then I 

have managed to cure myself of diabetes 

without medication. I have also written a book 

called The Inspired Diabetic, which details my 

experience in the hope I can help others with 

the same condition. 

Though my parents are of Jamaican heritage, 

I am originally from London, and have been 

trained as a professional chef with 30 years of 

experience under my apron in restaurants and 

hotels around the capital. According to current 

statistics, people from a BAME background 

have a greater chance of developing Type 2 

diabetes (people of African-Caribbean decent 

are three times more likely). 

It has become an increasingly undeniable 

truth that the diabetes epidemic affects 

people globally and the fact that these 

unfortunate circumstances can be changed – 

and even rectified – with adjustments to diet 

and lifestyle makes this an essential subject 

to address, which is what I have tried to do by 

writing my story, charting the steps I took to 

reverse my own blood sugar levels. 

The Inspired Diabetic is a book about lifestyle, 

nutrition, fitness, exercise and, of course, 

diabetes. I believe my story will be of interest 

to many, with diabetes affecting over 400 

million people worldwide. 

Changes in lifestyle and diet means diabetes 

is one of the fastest growing diseases on the 

planet. It is also the subject of growing media 

interest as journalists become aware of the 

scale of the disease. 

Here follows my blood sugar level-reversing 

journey, which is amazing. This was all done 

naturally, without medication. As a general 

guide, haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels of less 

than or equal to 40 mmol/mol is normal.

The Environment Agency is working 

with Redbridge Council to reduce 

flooding to homes and businesses in 

Woodford and surrounding areas from the 

River Roding. The river has a long history 

of flooding, most noticeably in 2000, when 

over 400 properties flooded in Woodford. 

We are currently working on a bid for 

funding from the Mayor of London’s Good 

Growth Fund (a £70 million regeneration 

programme to support growth and 

community development in London), with a 

decision due around October time. If we are 

successful, we will have extra money to carry 

out environmental enhancements along the 

River Roding corridor. This will bring a wealth 

of environmental and social benefits to the 

local area. 

On 17 October from 12 noon to 6pm, we 

will be hosting a local drop-in event at 

Woodford Station to share proposed plans 

of both embankment refurbishments and 

environmental enhancements with the 

local community. We want your thoughts 

and ideas on how we can help enhance the 

environment. 

We are a diverse team of people at the 

Environment Agency who are all passionate 

about the environment, our rivers and 

helping people at risk of flooding. We play a 

vital role in planning for and responding to 

flooding from rivers and the sea and we work 

in partnership with local authorities and the 

emergency services to ensure the responses 

are coordinated. We have a state-of-theart 

incident room from where we plan and 

respond to flooding and other environmental 

incidents 365 days a year.

Before a flood occurs, we work with the 

Meteorological Office to understand forecasts

people who live near rivers when we expect 

flooding to occur to enable them to stay safe 

and reduce damage to property. 

As you may expect, we were involved in 

protecting people and property and warning 

residents during the recent flooding at Whaley 

Bridge in the Goyt Valley. But locally, our 

site-based staff ensure the River Roding is 

flowing as effectively as possible. This includes 

carrying out proactive work in Chigwell, 

Loughton and Dagenham before the bad 

weather arrives, such as maintaining river 

channels, clearing blockages and operating 

flood defences. The majority of the riverbanks 

should be maintained by the riparian owner, 

the landowner adjacent to the riverbank. 

During a flood, we deploy staff to the 

areas affected to gather information on 

the impacts and provide advice to help 

people respond and recover. We provide 

a flood warning service called Floodline 

(0345 988 11 88), so people can stay up to date 

with the latest reports. We also respond to 

a wide range of other major environmental 

incidents such as pollution, waste fires, 

fish kills and waste crime, so if you see any 

environmental incidents, please report them 

(0800 80 70 60), and if you own land next to a 

river, please be aware of your responsibilities

One of our aims has been to make art more accessible. It’s a form of 

communication. If we’ve helped more local people enjoy art, that’s an 

important achievement, says Donna Mizzi, Art Trail Wanstead founder

These were just a few of the comments 

overheard during September’s Art Trail 

Wanstead. This trail has been the biggest and 

best in its 10 years, according to many visitors 

and artists. Almost 80 venues participated in 

the free 16-day event organised by Art Group 

Wanstead volunteers. Some small shops 

showed a few samples while larger businesses 

accommodated work by several artists. Florist 

Lillies of Wanstead even gave over its whole 

front window to flower art by delighted Leila 

Skye, while trail supporter The Stow Brothers 

used its window and walls to showcase the 

event. About 150 amateur and professional 

artists took part, and at least the same 

number of school children. In addition, 142 art 

postcards went on display, most created by 

local residents. 

Children from Wanstead Church School 

and Aldersbrook Primary made hundreds 

of clocks for the event’s Time theme, many 

of which were displayed outside the Corner 

House. Other works ranged from paintings 

to photography, from pottery and jewellery 

to mosaic work, and varied in scale from tiny 

masterpieces in a miniature gallery to Karen 

Humpage’s huge papier-mâché cow. 

Then there was the Wanstead Festival with 

stalls from designer makers and artists, 

and a wide range of free workshops. 

Snaresbrook Primary School produced 

seasonal trees to embellish and later show 

at the school as part of Victoria Senett and 

Emma English’s recycling workshop. Marsh 

Quilters demonstrated their colourful and

almost £120 for Compassion in World Farming 

intricate craft and ran popular workshops. 

Alison Stenhouse and Sally Asbury helped 

children make marine-scene artworks to draw 

attention to the Sea-Changers charity, while 

Eugene Coyle encouraged postcard designing 

and paper-plate clock making by children. He 

also sold contributed postcards for charity. 

But the giant trail workshop, which invariably 

attracts the biggest participation, was the 

Lego “Build” attraction organised by Adult 

Fans of Lego. “We had more than 200 separate 

models made by our artist children (and a few 

parents!) on display all day,” said exhausted – 

but happy – co-ordinator Lee McGinty. 

Meanwhile, other work provoked discussions. 

A photographic work by psychotherapist and 

artist Victoria Baskerville at The Duke showed

Anti-Semitism: discuss 

David Rosenberg is a lifelong campaigner against fascism and racism, and 

at this month’s East London Humanists meeting, he will be giving his 

perspective on the scourge of anti-Semitism and inviting discussion 

After the horrors of the Holocaust 

were exposed to the world, most 

people thought it inconceivable 

that anti-Semitism could surface again in 

any serious form, but anti-Semitism has 

proven to be a light sleeper in Britain. And 

while abuse and attacks targeting Muslims 

and refugees are more commonplace, the 

number of anti-Semitic incidents in Britain 

in recent years has begun to rise. It has 

rarely been absent from the headlines, not 

just because of the reported incidents, but 

because it has become a political football. 

I grew up as a Jew in inner London, then later 

in Ilford. From around 16 years old, I became 

an anti-racist activist. I instinctively associated 

British anti-Semitism with the political right 

and far right. In 2011 I published a book called 

Battle for the East End, which focused on 

Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists, 

a fundamentally anti-Semitic movement 

that built 500 branches around the country 

in the 1930s, and won adherents among all 

classes to its poisonous ideology. In the more 

mainstream right wing, I was aware it was a 

Conservative government that passed Britain‘s 

first modern immigration law – the Aliens 

Act – which was directed overwhelmingly 

against Jewish migrants from Eastern Europe. 

Fortunately, my grandparents were able to 

get in. 

Several decades later – in the 1980s – when 

Mrs Thatcher appointed three Jews to her 

cabinet, I remember former Prime Minister 

Harold MacMillan lamenting the fact her 

Cabinet now contained too many “old 

Estonians” and too few old Etonians. 

But much of the media coverage has centred 

on allegations against the Labour Party – 

the party that introduced legislation about 

equalities – and specifically against Jeremy 

Corbyn. I was active in the Labour Party for 

a few years in the 1980s, and rejoined in 2015 

when Corbyn stood for the leadership. I 

knew very well how strong his commitment 

was to supporting minorities and at first the 

allegations struck me as bizarre (and they still 

do), but there is no doubt that this perception 

has come to be believed by significant 

numbers of Jews, and we need to understand 

that. Corbyn is well known too for being a 

strong advocate of justice for Palestinians. 

Somewhere along the line, attitudes to Jews, 

on the one hand, and attitudes towards Israeli 

nationalism and Israeli government policies 

on the other, have become blurred in an 

unhelpful way. Under considerable pressure, 

the Labour Party adopted what is known as 

the International Holocaust Remembrance 

Alliance definition of anti-Semitism, with a set 

of associated examples, though the examples 

are controversial and the actual breadth of 

this alliance is certainly open to question. 

This is just some of the history and some of 

the issues I look forward to unpicking. I hope 

you will come and unpick them with me!

Marian Temple from the Wanstead Community Gardeners takes a look 

at the Wanstead Place Clinic garden, a site that epitomises the group’s 

ethos of collective effort, but is also home to some mystery goings-on 

Our latest garden has really taken on 

a life of its own. Planted only in April 

in order to catch the spring showers, 

which didn’t come, it has been lovingly 

watered by the wonderful Carmel who 

works in the British Heart Foundation shop. 

She has the enviable ability of involving 

the whole world in the watering. Thus, the 

neighbours, the minister one side and the 

man in the tall house the other side, have 

been filling watering cans and barrels. 

Helen and Eileen who work at the clinic have 

been doing their bit, as well as a neighbour in 

Church Path. This really has turned out to be 

a community garden with us, the Wanstead 

Community Gardeners, setting it up and the 

locals taking over from there. This is exactly 

as we would like it to be. It makes sense. The 

garden flourished, and in seemingly no time 

was awash with colour. This is the only one 

of our patches which has the luxury of being 

regularly watered. What a difference that 

makes! 

Right from the beginning this garden seems 

to have had a life of its own. It wasn’t long 

before four fairies appeared, plus two frogs 

and a pair of boots! Two scarecrows arrived 

on the scene plus a cat missing a hind leg, 

two rabbits, one without ears, and so it goes 

on. The latest addition to the menagerie is a 

meerkat! 

This is not our normal style but something 

else. The children pass by on their way to 

the Church of England school every day. The 

mums visit the clinic with their toddlers, as 

do elderly people coming to have their feet 

done. Passers-by enjoy this corner of quirkery 

with its colourful flowers appearing in what 

was a desolate empty patch and its everincreasing 

population of who knows what? 

It really is a winner and maybe will become 

as much a Wanstead iconic garden as is the 

Corner House garden and the fountain beds 

on George Green. 

Now where is the mystery? This concerns the 

pair of scarecrows. Not only do they move 

about, sometimes appearing in friendly 

conflab, at other times back to back, having 

had a tiff maybe? More mysterious than that is 

the fact they frequently change their clothes! 

They have rainwear for inclement weather and 

quite a wardrobe. Barbie watch out! 

All this makes this corner an ongoing delight, 

full of surprises. Who could have guessed 

in April that Wanstead would gain such a 

successful addition to its street patchwork 

gardens? This one really makes people smile.

Starting your own business can be an exciting but worrying endeavour. 

Derek Inkpin, a partner at local solicitors Wiseman Lee, highlights some 

of the things you should consider when going it alone 

All the ins and outs of a new business 

– licences, data protection, satisfying 

customer enquiries and employing 

people – may at first seem like quite a 

mountain to climb. So, where do you start? 

Carrying out research of the marketplace 

for your chosen business as well as taking 

sound business advice is vital. Let HMRC 

know you are going to be self-employed. 

Writing a business plan, talking to your bank 

about financial support and developing your 

business brand will all be important. 

You will need to decide which business 

structure suits your needs. You could choose 

to set up as a sole trader. This is the simplest 

type of business which is owned entirely by 

you. As such, you are entitled to keep all the 

profits after tax has been paid, although you 

will also be personally liable for any losses. If 

this seems a scary prospect, you could set up 

as a limited company – where your personal 

finances are separate from the company. The 

downside is this can require more work on 

the company’s reporting and management. 

The third option is to set up your business 

as a partnership. This is the easiest way 

for two or more people to run a business 

together. Business debts are shared, as are the 

responsibilities, but you will have joint liability 

with your partner for any losses. 

Once you are registered you need to think 

about the many legal aspects of running a 

business. Are there any licences you need? 

For example, if it’s a retail store, will there be 

music playing? Will you be selling food or 

alcohol? Each of these and more require their 

own separate licences. 

You also need to think carefully about data 

protection. You may think your start-up 

business is too small, but if you plan on 

hiring staff or storing any information about 

customers who use your service, then you’ll 

need to ensure this data is kept secure, up 

to date and accurate. It is also vital that the 

people you are collecting the data from are 

aware they can see the information you have 

on them and correct it if it’s wrong. They also 

have the right to request it is deleted. Before 

your business begins collecting any data, you 

must tell the Information Commissioner’s 

Office how the information will be used or you 

could face a large fine. 

Perhaps the most daunting aspect of starting 

your own business is being responsible for 

other people’s livelihoods. For this reason, 

it is paramount you follow the relevant 

employment laws, including payroll, national 

insurance, rights to work, pensions and 

employment contracts. Do also remember you 

are responsible for the health and safety of 

both your staff and your customers while they 

are in your place of work. 

All of the above, of course, comes with a need 

to work hard. Good luck!

Celebrating Culture 

Fabula Festival – Redbridge Libraries’ biggest cultural event of the year 

– is back this autumn and promises to delight residents with a jampacked 

programme. Anita Luby reports 

Fabula Festival (2 to 13 October) is a 

celebration of the arts and libraries 

and their power to transform lives. 

It’s delivered through a programme 

of performances, children’s events, 

author talks, films, writing programmes, 

workshops and arts projects. It gives 

residents the opportunity to participate 

in a range of new and exciting activities 

delivered by a range of local and national 

organisations, showcasing the very best 

in literature, music, drama, dance, film, art 

and technology. 

Festival highlights include an evening with 

author Lucinda Dickens Hawksley at Wanstead 

Library (10 October, 7.30pm). Everyone knows 

Charles Dickens’ novels, but did you know 

he was also a keen actor, mesmerist and 

conjuror? Lucinda – who is also Dickens’ greatgreat-great-granddaughter 

– will talk about 

the man behind the novels: the journalist, 

social campaigner, dog lover, travel writer, 

and a man who was so influential in his own 

time that when he died the whole country 

went into mourning. She will also look at the 

changes he helped bring about in society, 

which still have resonance today. 

Elsewhere in the festival, there are writing 

workshops galore and opportunities for 

emerging artists to learn from established 

performers. Spoken word artist Yomi Greeds 

Sood from Apples & Snakes will be leading a 

masterclass for aspiring writers followed by a 

performance event featuring him and rising 

star on the poetry circuit, Debris Stephens. 

The ever-popular Kids Take Over events at 

Redbridge Central Library over the weekend 

of 12 and 13 October are once again delivered 

in partnership with Discover Story Centre. 

Kids of all ages will be treated to an array of 

Lucinda Dickens Hawksley 

author events such as David Litchfield, Sufiya 

Ahmed, Nadia Shireen and Simon Moles, 

writing workshops, comic book workshops, 

exhibitions, theatre and dance performances. 

There will also be opportunities to explore 

the world of STEAM (science, technology, 

engineering, arts and maths) in our awardwinning 

digital makerspace: Lab Central. 

Thanks to generous funding from Arts Council 

England, the festival is even bigger and 

better this year as we celebrate the power of 

libraries during National Libraries Week (7 to 

13 October). Focusing on the theme of libraries 

in the digital age, visitors to the festival will 

get the opportunity to discover the digital 

innovation taking place across Redbridge 

Libraries from Hublets, Yetitablets, eBooks, 

eMagazines, makerspaces, film streaming, a 

tech lending library and more. All of this can 

be accessed for free with your library card to 

open up a world of possibilities.

IN CARTOONS and television comedies, snoring has always 

been a source of humour. But for many sufferers and their partners, 

it is a serious matter. As well as damaging relationships, its 

effects – including poor quality of sleep and lack of sleep – can

90% of cases, snorers go untreated; most of them probably unaware

HOW SERIOUS IS SNORING? 

Snoring is frequently, though not always, part of the condition

capacity to breathe, or by pauses in breathing, during sleep. The 

pauses, called apnoea, can last from a few seconds to a few minutes, 

and may occur five to thirty times in an hour. Sleep Apnoea 

can lead to health complications such as heart disease, high blood 

pressure, diabetes, stroke, daytime sleepiness and difficulty in 

concentrating, and sufferers run a higher risk of having work-related 

or driving accidents. 

There are three types of sleep apnoea: Central Apnoea, 

Obstructive Apnoea and a combination of the two (Central and 

Obstructive). Central Apnoea results when the brain fails to activate 

the muscles needed for breathing during sleep. Obstructive Apnoea 

results when the airways collapse or are obstructed during sleep. 

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT? 

Depending on the cause and the severity of the condition, sleep 

apnoea can be treated using non-surgical or surgical methods. 

Dr Amjad Malik encourages people who snore to attend a free 

initial consultation. Having identified their particular problem, 

he is able to offer a number of solutions. 

In many cases, a simple and effective 

method is a snore guard. This is a mouth 

piece designed to allow the lower jaw to be 

thrust forward so the tongue does not fall 

back and obstruct the airway during sleep.

DO ONLY ADULTS SNORE? 

It is rare for children to snore (and can be 

a cause for particular concern), but Dr 

Malik has successfully treated children, and 

believes there are advantages in treating a 

person while they are still growing. In children 

and in adults, the cause of snoring 

can be the relationship between the shape 

of the palate and the size and position of 

the tongue, which obstructs the breathing 

during sleep. This can often be remedied 

with orthodontic treatment to realign the 

upper arch of teeth to give the tongue 

more room, so it lies in a better position.

Practising qi gong promotes positivity, wellness and a balance in life, 

says Mina Wolton, who offers classes in the ancient mind-body-spirit 

system at Wanstead House 

My name is Mina and I have lived 

in Wanstead for nearly 25 years. 

I am a qi gong practitioner and 

have recently started teaching classes at 

Wanstead House Community centre. 

I have always been interested in health 

and wellbeing and played sports all my 

life. However, ill health in my thirties led 

me to exploring complementary therapies, 

particularly qi gong. What they all had in 

common was working with a life force and 

being able to tap into that energy to energise, 

heal and create harmony within. 

Qi gong, which was documented in China 

over 2,000 years ago, has become popular 

throughout the world for its many healthgiving 

benefits. Qi (pronounced ‘chi’) is the 

Chinese word for life force or energy (also 

known as ‘ki’ or ‘prana’). 

Nature is infused with qi, which is why when 

we are by the sea, near mountains, in forests, 

gardens or just looking at clouds floating in 

the sky, we experience qi at a deep level and 

feel the restorative power of that energy field 

in nature. 

Gong (or ‘kung’) means ‘work’ or ‘effort’, so 

qi gong is the cultivation of that qi through 

practice and dedication and learning how 

to direct its energy. It consists of static and 

flowing movements, which are coordinated 

with breathing to circulate and direct qi 

around the meridians (energy pathways) of 

the body. 

Just some of the many benefits of regular qi 

gong practice include relaxation, boosting 

the immune system, strengthening the body 

and a sense of wellbeing. The exercises are 

performed with a certain amount of tension 

but, paradoxically, in a relaxed way, and are 

suitable for all ages and all levels of fitness. 

What I have discovered through my 20 years of 

learning qi gong under Sifu Ram, my qi gong 

master, is that it is incredibly empowering. I 

have learnt to take personal responsibility for 

my health. 

You learn to emulate the crane (the animal 

that symbolises our style of qi gong), so we 

learn grace, strength and fluidity, which then 

becomes a metaphor for how to approach life. 

In a small, confined space in around 15 to 20 

minutes (as a required minimum) per day, you 

can do a series of exercises to promote a sense 

of positivity, wellness and balance in life. 

Mina runs monthly qi gong taster 

sessions starting on the first Monday of 

the month at Wanstead House, 21 The 

Green, Wanstead (four sessions: £35).

The lakes in Wanstead Park are the 

most visible remaining features 

of its past as one of this country’s 

great landscaped gardens. All completely 

artificial, they are now nearly 300 years old, 

and for most of their history have suffered 

from fluctuating water levels. 

As the Friends have described in previous 

articles, this has been due to several factors: 

1. The failure of systems designed to supply 

water to the lakes from outside the park. 

2. The loss of much of the natural catchment 

area to development since 1900. 

3. The introduction of modern 

drainage systems and other 

services around the park, which 

has lowered the water table and 

created leak paths. 

4. The loss of the River Roding as a 

source for the Ornamental Water. 

5. The unfavourable geology on which much 

of the lake system sits. 

6. The lack of effective lining, or its 

deterioration beyond repair, in two of the 

most vulnerable lakes, compounded – in 

one case - by wartime damage. 

Wanstead Park was listed as a Grade II* 

landscape “of special interest” by English 

Heritage (now Historic England) in 2001, 

following an earlier Grade II designation in 

1987. Since 2009 it has been classed as “At Risk” 

on account of its deteriorating condition. The 

state of the lakes was a major factor in this. 

For more than a decade, the Friends of 

Wanstead Parklands has been working with 

the park’s guardians, in particular the City of 

London, to identify long-term solutions to the 

problems with the lakes. In 2013 a Wanstead 

Park Project Steering Committee was set up, 

involving all major stakeholders, to try to 

develop an achievable and sustainable plan 

for the restoration and future management of 

the park. Under its auspices, the consultancy 

LDA Design was engaged, and produced a 

draft Parkland Plan which has gone through 

several drafts as the knowledge base has 

developed, circumstances have changed 

and costs have been clarified. The latest draft 

proposes three themed work packages. Two of 

the packages are framed to meet the objective 

of getting Wanstead Park off the “At Risk” 

register. These would require a substantial 

capital funding package involving a grant 

from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. We 

hope to be in a position to publish details of 

the finalised Parkland Plan shortly. 

The City commissioned a hydrological survey 

from JBA Consulting which provided a much 

clearer understanding of the way the lake 

system works. However, the whole project 

was galvanised by a development in a quite 

different quarter. Under the requirements 

of the Flood and Water Management Act 

2010, the Environment Agency confirmed in 

December 2017 that the lakes in Wanstead 

Park, which were classified as “Large Raised 

Reservoirs”, should be raised to “High Risk” 

status, as an uncontrolled release of water 

in a major flood event could, in theory, 

put people’s lives at risk. It should be 

emphasised that this was not a cause for 

panic or a criticism of the way the lakes had 

been maintained, but an almost automatic 

consequence of the way the new regulations 

now dealt with lake cascades of this type. 

The City of London’s response was to arrange 

an inspection by the independent civil 

engineer who monitors the management of 

reservoirs. He advised that an engineering 

assessment of the dams needed to be 

undertaken in the first instance, as it was 

likely they would need to be strengthened, 

perhaps raised, and provided with new 

spillways. The engineering assessment has 

now been commissioned and should be 

completed by the end of 2019. It is anticipated 

the modifications required could cost up to 

£10 million, based on what has been spent on 

a similar project on Hampstead Heath. 

As far as the City of London is concerned, a bill 

of this size is not good news, but potentially 

presents an opportunity for Wanstead Park. 

This was because spending to strengthen the 

dams would come from central, rather than

In the fifth of a series of articles looking at the developing 

plans for restoring Wanstead Park, Richard Arnopp from the 

Friends of Wanstead Parklands brings us up to date on hopes 

to resolve the problems with the park’s lakes 

Epping Forest, budgets, and it would make 

sense to carry out other improvements and 

repairs to the lakes at the same time. Any 

non-statutory element of the work could 

potentially be used as match funding for a 

parallel bid to the National Lottery Heritage 

Fund. A grant from that quarter could be 

used to cover a range of non-water-related 

improvements to the park, and potentially 

offer the prospect of covering more ground 

on a shorter timescale than had ever been 

contemplated, albeit perhaps with a rather 

later starting date than previously hoped. 

Given the likely deadline for the completion 

of works on the lakes, timings for a lottery bid 

would be very tight if any of the spending was 

to be used as match funding. This is a once 

and for all opportunity which must be got 

right! 

Similar projects in Highams Park and 

Hampstead Heath have brought big 

improvements, including in aesthetic terms. 

The work will inevitably be disruptive, but the 

City of London intends to plan and carry it out 

carefully, taking into account local concerns.

In the 18th of a series of articles, David Bird discusses the work of 

Redbridge Music Society and introduces us to Spanish saxophonist 

Manu Brazo, who will be performing at Wanstead Library this month 

The current aims of Redbridge Music 

Society are to promote and support 

talented young musicians in the 

early years of their careers and to provide 

a diverse range of musical genres to the 

Redbridge public. This month, outstanding 

young saxophonist Manu Brazo, together 

with award-winning piano accompanist 

Bryan Evans MBE, will perform music by 

Vaughan Williams, Verdi (Traviata Fantasy), 

de Falla, Gershwin and others. 

Twenty-six-year-old Manu Brazo was born 

in Utrera (Seville). After completing his 

undergraduate studies under Juan Jimenez at 

the Manuel Castillo Conservatory of Music in 

Seville, he continued his studies at London’s 

Royal College of Music (RCM) for a Masters in 

Performance degree. He made his concerto 

debut in the UK with the Guildford Symphony 

Orchestra in 2016, playing the Glazunov 

Saxophone Concerto, and since then has 

performed with a number of orchestras, 

including the London City Orchestra. 

Manu has won many awards and prizes, 

including the 2016 Manuel Castillo 

Conservatory Concerto Competition. He 

was invited to join the London Sinfonietta 

Academy and to collaborate with the Youth 

Musician Symphony Orchestra (YMSO). In 2018 

he was selected to take part in the Britten- 

Pears Young Artist Programme, which saw 

him perform at the Snape Maltings Proms 

conducted by Marin Alsop. He was chosen 

for the Tillett Trust Young Artists Platform for 

2018/19 and is currently a Philip and Dorothy 

Green 2019/20 Young Artists Award holder – an 

award given by Making Music to celebrate the 

best of the UK’s young musical talent. 

Manu has performed at notable venues in 

the UK, including the Royal Opera House, 

and has played in Norway, Greece, Spain and 

Indonesia. He recently performed with Bryan 

Evans as the opening act for Sir Cliff Richard 

at the Greenwich Music Time Festival. He also 

opened at the official Downton Abbey live 

concert at Highclere Castle. 

Accompanist Bryan Evans studied at RCM 

and whilst there won all the accompanist 

prizes. He has performed at major UK venues, 

including London’s Wigmore Hall, and in many 

countries across the world. He has performed 

on BBC Radio 3 and TV and is a leading 

exponent of performing chamber opera from 

the piano and is currently music director of 

Diva Opera. In 1993 he was awarded an MBE 

for his services to music. 

The partnership of two such outstanding 

musicians promises to make Redbridge Music 

Society’s opening recital of its 2019/20 season 

a very memorable event.

In Love with the Past 

Join prizewinning author Jean Fullerton at Wanstead Library this month 

as she discusses her latest novel A Ration Book Childhood, which 

explores a dangerous secret, set in the darkest days of the Blitz 

Hello everyone, and for those of you 

who don’t know me or my books, I’m 

Jean Fullerton, an award-winning, 

bestselling author of 15 historical novels. 

I’m also a native East Ender, born and bred 

in Stepney where my family have lived since 

the 1830s. Unsurprisingly, all my novels are 

set in the overcrowded and boisterous streets 

around the London Docks. I believe my 

background gives me a unique home-grown 

perspective into the history and culture of the 

old riverside communities. 

I first fell in love with history at school when I 

read Anya Seton’s book Katherine. Since then 

I have read everything I can about English 

history but I am particularly fascinated by 

the 18th and 19th centuries and my books are 

set in this period. I just love my native city, 

and the East End in particular, which is why 

I write stories to bring that vibrant area of 

London alive. 

My first series introducing the Nolan family 

spanned the 1830s and 1840s, after which I 

jumped forward to the lean, post-war years 

of the late 1940s for my east London district 

nurse series featuring nurses Millie and 

Connie. 

My current Ration Book series follows the 

Brogan family as they battle Hitler and each 

other during the dark days of World War Two. 

The first three books in the series, A Pocketful 

of Dreams, A Ration Book Christmas and A 

Ration Book Childhood are already released, 

and A Ration Book Wedding will follow in May 

2020. I’m currently working on A Ration Book 

Daughter scheduled for release in May 2021. 

But writing a book is only one side of the coin; 

having someone read and enjoy it is the other. 

When I’m not worrying over the plot and 

creating characters you fall in love with, hold 

your breath for and shed a tear over, I love 

getting out and about meeting readers. 

I do this in a variety of places by giving talks 

on my life, historical talks based on the 

research I’ve undertaken for my novels in 

libraries, Women’s Institutes, U3As and other 

organisations, and even on cruise ships. Yes, I 

know it’s a hard job, but someone has to do it! 

Readers are everything. Without them, my 

stories are just paper and ink. As I already said, 

I love meeting readers and explaining how 

I craft the ideas rattling around in my head 

into a cracking 400-page novel. With that in 

mind, I look forward to meeting all you lovely 

Wanstead readers this month.

This picture may be nothing special to 

most photographers, but to me it was 

a milestone breakthrough, realising 

I had recognised the possibility of getting 

this shot. 

I have been a regular member of Woodford 

and Wanstead Photographic Society for just 

under three years but still consider myself 

a novice when I compare myself to other 

members I admire. Some people just have the 

knack of finding the right angle to make an 

average image great. I often wonder how they 

see what I don’t and whether you can teach 

someone creativity or if it’s something you just 

have or you don’t. 

I must say, since joining Woodford and 

Wanstead Photographic Society, I have started 

to continually look at my surroundings to see 

if there is a potential photograph within my 

sights. I now look skyward as much as down 

and left or right. 

Leaving my office in Fitzrovia at 4.30pm daily, 

and walking the same route to Tottenham 

Court Road Tube station, I noticed this facade 

in Percy Street showing a reflection of a few 

clouds with the staircase visible through the 

glazing. I immediately realised that with the 

right weather conditions the staircase would 

look like it was passing through the clouds. 

Camera in hand every afternoon I left work, 

my journey down Percy Street was finally 

rewarded with ideal conditions – a very bright 

sunny afternoon with plenty of fluffy clouds 

in the sky. This gave a great reflection with the 

staircase clearly visible. 

A bit of teasing with the Detail Extractor Filter 

from the Nik Collection bolt-on to Photoshop 

gave me an image that achieved first place in 

a club competition. A pleasing result, but not 

as pleasurable as knowing I had imagined the 

picture before I had actually seen it.

In the third of a series of articles looking at the work of Age UK 

Redbridge, Barking & Havering, Janet West explains the importance of 

Older People’s Week and looks at what will be happening in Wanstead 

The United Nations General Assembly 

passed a resolution on 14 December 

1990 declaring 1 October as an 

International Day of Older People. The 

day is to acknowledge and appreciate 

the enormous contributions and 

achievements that older people make 

to the functioning of society and the 

economy. 

According to the United Nations, almost 

700 million people are now over the age of 

60. By 2050, two billion people, over 20% of 

the world’s population, will be 60 or older. The 

increase in the number of older people will be 

the greatest and most rapid in the developing 

world, with Asia as the region with the largest 

number of older persons, and Africa facing the 

largest proportionate growth. 

Each year, the International Day of Older 

People has a different theme. Last year’s 

theme was ‘Celebrating Older Human Rights 

Champions’ and for 2019 the theme will be 

‘The Journey to Age Equality’. 

Age UK Redbridge, Barking & Havering have 

been working alongside Redbridge Council 

and other local organisations for many years, 

arranging events to celebrate Older People’s 

Day. In fact, in Redbridge, there is usually a 

whole week of celebration and this year is no 

exception! 

There are events planned throughout the 

week, ranging from information sessions 

about keeping safe at home, to health and 

wellbeing, leisure and culture, and there 

will also be opportunities to try out new 

exercises in classes around the borough for 

free, and a celebratory lunch with the Mayor 

of Redbridge at the Allan Burgess Centre on 

2 October. 

In fact, Wanstead’s Allan Burgess Centre has an 

event each day during the week commencing 

30 September. There will be a performance 

from Redbridge Music Lounge, the Redbridge 

Rhymesters will be having a poetry session 

with the children from Snaresbrook Primary 

School, a general knowledge quiz will take 

place and a comedy performance will keep 

everyone entertained, all in addition to the 

Mayor’s celebratory lunch. 

Programmes are available from the centre and 

from local libraries, as well as from Age UK in 

Ilford. We hope to see lots of people enjoying 

events throughout the week. Do pop in to the 

Allan Burgess Centre and join us and enjoy 

one of the events as well as a home-cooked 

meal, which will include a free glass of wine on 

the day of the celebratory lunch.

Georgian survivor 

At this month’s meeting of the Wanstead Historical Society, 

Lynn Haseldine Jones will be discussing Snaresbrook House, a grade IIlisted 

Georgian mansion overlooking Eagle Pond 

Snaresbrook House is one of the littleknown 

gems of Wanstead, a Georgian 

mansion that has survived into the 

21st century. When I moved into the Lodge 

at Snaresbrook House six years ago, I set 

about researching the history of the house, 

which has been a fascinating exercise (and 

one which still continues). 

Local people may remember that Snaresbrook 

House was empty for a number of years 

before being turned into a development 

of apartments. Many may also remember 

that the building was occupied by the local 

council from just after the war until the 1980s, 

variously being the borough treasurer’s 

department and the architects’ department. 

Before the Second World War, Snaresbrook 

House was a large and no doubt luxurious 

private house with grand gardens and a fine 

view over Eagle Pond, and home over the 

years to a range of interesting people. The 

last family to occupy it as a home were the 

Lustys, John Lusty having made his fortune 

in that well-known delicacy of the Victorian 

period, turtle soup, which often featured on 

the menu of the Lord Mayor’s banquets. Other 

members of the family were involved in the 

manufacture of Lloyd Loom furniture. 

Before the Lustys, the house was the private 

residence of diamond mine owner David 

Symons, whose initials can be seen to this 

day on the fine ornate metal gates to the 

development, along with the date 1900. David 

and his wife Beatrice Maud had three children, 

and employed several servants to look after 

the house and garden, and to occupy the 

Lodge. Beatrice came from a theatrical family, 

and the lawns of Snaresbrook House were 

sometimes used for operatic and theatrical 

performances. 

Earlier occupants include the Fowler family, 

in whose time the house was known as Eagle 

House. There were eagles on the gateposts, 

but the originals have disappeared. The 

present eagles are new replacements. 

Samuel Ellis, who lived there in the 1870s, 

was a merchant whose business specialised 

in the supply of ivory and ostrich feathers. 

He gave to the people of Wanstead the 

drinking fountain, which still stands close to 

Snaresbrook station. 

Other occupants included a wine merchant 

and a soap manufacturer. At the time of the 

demolition of Wanstead House in 1823, the 

man living at Snaresbrook House was James 

Scratton, who treated it as a country retreat. 

I am continuing my research to discover 

more about the occupants of this fine house, 

particularly in the 18th century. It is intriguing 

to think the house may be even older, with 

origins as a farmhouse in perhaps the late 17th 

century. The house still has many secrets to be 

discovered.

Play Reading Group 

Have you ever wanted to act but not had the time to 

take part in a play? Then come along to this group which 

wi l read aloud a chosen play, each participant reading 

a variety of characters and there’s no need to prepare in 

advance. The play for this session wi l have LGBT+ themes.

– There is no limit but like natural teeth, they 

need maintenance and servicing. The mouth is a 

dynamic machine: teeth and implants undergo 

strong mechanical forces, so regular checkups and 

hygiene visits are a must, as with natural teeth.
