People of Wanstead, September is here, 

When local events step up a gear. 

Comedy, theatre, jazz, art and rhyme, 

The mix is eclectic, the content sublime. 

From pubs to churches, it’s a varied arena, 

There’s even an event about the wine of Argentina. 

Three solid weeks, it’s a cultural binge, 

I’m talking, of course, about the Wanstead Fringe. 

Cultural activities here were once thin on the ground, 

But thanks to the Fringe, they’re now easily found. 

It all started back in 2013, 

Much smaller then, but people were keen. 

Each year it grew, with events aplenty, 

Apart from the COVID break of 2020. 

Now 10 years on, it’s bigger than ever, 

And continues to provide enlightening pleasure. 

Famous authors will keep us in the know, 

Including a chat with Jonathan Coe. 

Making us laugh will be comedian Paul Sinha, 

Fresh from The Chase, he’s always a winner. 

St Mary’s will host tours of the crypt, 

And Wanstead Theatre Co has a rugby-themed script. 

Photographer Geoff Wilkinson often appears on these pages, 

He’ll be discussing his career (which has lasted for ages). 

A musical in a church and an interview with a lord, 

Guitarist Pete Black will strike the right chord. 

Musicians Joe Walters and Lucy Crowe, 

Are to perform an experimental music show. 

Will Gompertz, another big name taking part, 

He’ll be talking about all things art.

decision about the future of the youth centre 

will be made. We will be gathering outside

Age UK invites over-55s to discover 

what’s on offer at local activity centre

Wanstead Beer Festival 

Age UK is keen to raise awareness of its 

activity centre in Wanstead (also known as 

the Allan Burgess Centre). “The centre has 

struggled to replenish visitor numbers since 

reopening after COVID. We run daily exercise, 

games and craft classes, and our fabulous new 

chefs, Teresa and Julie, prepare freshly cooked 

meals Monday to Friday,” said centre manager 

Jackie Balman. Located at 2 Grove Park 

(opposite the Co-op), the centre’s two-course 

lunches (£7) are available to any Redbridge 

resident aged 55 and over. Call 020 8989 6338 

Foster a dog whilst it trains at 

local Guide Dogs school 

Tickets are available for the first Wanstead 

Beer Festival, taking place in the halls of Christ 

Church on 14 October. “The festival will include 

a number of real ales from the local area and 

beyond. There will also be craft ales, lagers 

and cider, and some carefully chosen wine and 

prosecco for non-beer drinkers,” said organiser 

Paul Donovan. Proceeds from the event – 

which runs from 1pm to 10.30pm – will be 

donated to local charities. The £12 ticket price 

(£10 in advance) includes a commemorative

The Guide Dogs’ Redbridge hub is seeking 

volunteers from the Wanstead area to foster 

a dog. “Our fosterers provide loving homes 

for our dogs to relax in while they are in 

training. It can be a great way to add a dog to 

your home without long-term commitment,” 

said Volunteer Coordinator Phoebe Coles. 

Volunteer fosterers drop off their dog at the 

Woodford Green centre on weekdays between 

7am and 9am and pick them up between 4pm 

and 6pm. All costs are covered and training is

Local public speaking club to host 

virtual open house event 

An organisation that encourages people 

to connect with nature is launching a new 

series of events across Wanstead Park and 

Wanstead Flats this month. “Our Walk in the 

Woods project continues with events running 

until November. What a glorious time to get 

out and enjoy autumn!” said Alison O’Connor, 

founder of Tinder Sticks. The free events are 

suitable for over-18s and include making 

bracelets from plants, looking for animal 

tracks, bird watching and identifying edible

communication skills or conquer their fear 

of public speaking are invited to join the 

Woodford Green Speakers’ virtual open house 

event on 26 September. “We recognise the

Wanstead Park swans Bonnie and 

Clyde separated after injury 

Planning application for flats on 

Evergreen Field submitted 

How the development would 

look from the High Street 

An injured swan known as Clyde has been 

permanently removed from Wanstead Park’s 

Perch Pond. “Sadly, the top bone of his wing is 

broken from a high-impact incident, probably 

sustained whilst defending his family. He is 

moulting, so it’s not a flying accident, and 

we had a report of three dogs harassing the 

family. There is no chance Clyde will fly again, 

so he will remain at The Swan Sanctuary in 

Shepperton. He was very distressed at leaving 

his mate, Bonnie, and cygnets,” said swan 

rescue volunteer supporter Helen O’Rourke. 

A planning application to build a four-storey 

block of flats on Evergreen Field has been 

submitted. The site – a patch of fenced-off 

land on Wanstead High Street next to Christ 

Church Green – has not been inhabited since 

1944, when two homes that stood there 

were bombed and then demolished in 1967. 

Redbridge Council is due to make a decision 

on the application in October. If approved, 

the development will include a nursery on 

the ground floor along with 24 flats and a new

Historic High Stone damaged in 

a car crash (again)

The historic High Stone at the junction 

of Hollybush Hill and New Wanstead was 

damaged in a car crash last month. Originally a 

mile marker showing the distances to Epping, 

Ongar, Whitechapel and Hyde Park Corner, an 

obelisk has stood in roughly the same location 

since the 18th century, although the current 

High Stone dates from the 1930s after the 

original stone was also damaged by a vehicle. 

A Redbridge Council spokesperson said: “The 

monument is currently being repaired off-site 

and will be reinstated soon.”

demonstrations for all ages will take place at 

the Wanstead Festival on 17 September. “Tutors 

and artists will be showing techniques with 

watercolours, calligraphy, portrait paintings 

and a clever way to put together mixed-media 

designs that can be transferred to T-shirts. 

Botanical subjects always intrigue. No real 

insects are hurt for tutor Katherine Poluck’s 

amazing mounted butterflies (pictured) – 

learn about her realistic techniques,” said a

Fringe starts here 

It all began in 2013, and now, as the Wanstead Fringe gears up for its 

10th instalment of 100-plus cultural events, director Giles Wilson reveals 

what he’s looking forward to the most 

Ten years ago, the Wanstead Fringe 

started as a joke among a few 

friends. Why shouldn’t little old 

Wanstead have its own cultural fringe to 

complement the Wanstead Festival? we 

thought. Well, it was a joke then, but 

nobody’s laughing now (comedy nights 

notwithstanding). 

The Fringe has become something to take 

seriously. Alongside our favourites – the openair 

Kinema, the jumble trail, The Duke street 

party and others – more than 100 events will 

be taking place before the end of September. 

We will have four plays running, and thanks 

to the support of The Bull and some careful 

investment on our part, we hope to be able 

to expand that number during the rest of 

the year. We have 11 talks from authors – some 

local, some national – including one of the 

greatest living English novelists. We have 

always had music as part of our programme, 

but this year, we are hugely expanding the 

amount on offer. International opera star Lucy 

Crowe and husband Joe Walters will again be 

transforming St Mary’s into a magical venue 

for music – and that will also be the place to 

hear a new musical, Dark Isle. There will be a 

recital called Low Strings Drama, led by local 

composer Simone Spagnolo, which promises 

to be a unique blend of chamber music and 

drama soundtracks. Redbridge Brass Band, 

local singer-songwriters, singer Lydia Gerrard 

and local guitar virtuoso Peter Black also 

feature in the programme. 

The event I’m looking forward to most is 

hearing from novelist Jonathan Coe, whose 

series of novels have told an authentic story 

about the changes in British life since the 

war. The event will have a vivid counterpart 

as Helen Day, historian of Ladybird Books, 

talks about the perceptions our society used 

to have of itself. Author Paterson Joseph will 

talk about the life of Charles Ignatius Sancho, 

a revealing insight into a lesser-known side of 

our history. 

One national newspaper website profile of 

Wanstead this year said that, in the evenings, 

it became a ghost town. Wanstead-bred 

author and theatre director Patrick Marlowe 

will be doing his best to disprove that by 

telling an evening of ghost stories in the 

St Mary’s churchyard.

the Fringe without any public money. Our

Friday 8 September 

7.30pm Ghost Town Tales (£10) 

An eve-of-Fringe special. One newspaper this year said that after 5pm, Wanstead 

becomes a ghost town. The Fringe will be disproving it all throughout September 

– but for one night only we’re going to revel in it. Author and director Patrick 

Marlowe – an award-winning writer of ghost stories – will be testing your nerve as 

he tells stories designed to frighten. Patrick grew up in Wanstead and as a chorister 

he would often sing in St Mary’s, the location of the famed crypt, when he and his 

fellow choirboys would attempt to out-scare each other with spooky tales. Come 

along to the churchyard and see how strong your constitution is.

Wanstead Book Festival presents: Andrew Weale (Free) 

Andrew Weale, author of Newt in a Suit and Nora, visits Wanstead to tell his stories 

and delight the under-fives.

These sessions are a fun and very accessible introduction to clay. Suitable for

Comedy for Wanstead Fringe 2023 kicks off with a fantastic evening of stand-up 

headlined by Mock the Week regular Glenn Moore. Recognised for his brilliant 

joke-writing ability, Glenn received superlative reviews for both his Edinburgh 

shows and his sell-out UK tour.

Leading science journalists Miriam Frankel and Matt Warren bring us extraordinary

The Wanstead Theatre Co is back with a sparky and engaging comedy set on that

the very real Eton Manor RFC on non-match days of the Rugby World Cup 2023.

Victoria Baskerville, a Wanstead resident, transactional analyst, psychotherapist 

and community artist will invite us to account for and map all our identities.

7pm The Wheel Argentina – Wine Tasting (£25) 

“Every winery in Argentina on a bike. On my own. On forty quid. 4,500km uphill

experience while I take you through some of the most emblematic experiences in

7pm To a Skylark: Classical, folk and experimental music (£5–£10) 

Local musicians Joe Walters and Lucy Crowe curate an evening of music 

exploring themes associated with the skylark, our local Wanstead Flats resident 

struggling to survive in modern times. Joe and Lucy will perform with and 

alongside their friends, also locals of the area, and also musicians who feel the 

push and pull of urban life alongside their front garden that is Epping Forest. 

Expect classical song intertwined with folk, entangled with experimental indie 

and reimagined with free improvisation, all presented by leading exponents of

Outspoken journalist and commentator Ian Dunt knows something has gone 

terribly wrong with our society. It’s a feeling many of us have, but we struggle to 

articulate exactly why. Ian has no such problems. In his Sunday Times bestselling 

book How Westminster Works… and Why It Doesn’t, he lifts the lid on what 

has happened to politics, exposing aspects of the system in a way that can be 

understood and challenged.

Two press photographers – Geoff Wilkinson and Stefan Rousseau – talk about 

their careers spanning 50 years of history. From politicians to the rich and famous

achieve the photographs that appear in the papers.

7.30pm Wanstead Book Festival presents: Will Gompertz (£10) 

Will Gompertz is familiar to audiences throughout the country from his years as 

the BBC’s Arts Editor. For years Will was a fixture on the Ten O’Clock News as he 

would introduce Turner or Booker Prize winners, or explain why a statue or painting 

had been sold for record prices. In his new book he explains how anyone can look 

at and experience the world with an artist’s heightened powers of perception.

7.30pm Wanstead Book Festival presents: Jonathan Coe (£10) 

Jonathan Coe is one of Britain’s greatest living novelists whose books shine a light 

on how we as a society see ourselves. From his hit 1994 book What a Carve Up, 

through The Rotters Club, Number 11 and Middle England, he has found a moving, 

funny and true way to tell the story of Britain. His new novel Bournville continues 

the theme, following characters as they age from the Queen’s Coronation, through 

the 1966 World Cup, royal weddings and deaths, to Brexit and COVID. Through it 

all, Coe’s characters pose the question of whether the family – and the country 

– became closer together or further apart? He has created a social history of 

postwar Britain while it is still going on with a rare knack for spotting significant 

details and weaving them into hilariously well-observed plots. Do not miss this.

One ‘invisible illness’, lots of puppets, a self-deprecating actor, far too many 

biscuits and a sprinkle of absurdity all can be found in the room upstairs. But can 

you handle the journey up? This atmospheric show raises awareness of ME through 

the lens of a mother/daughter relationship. Based on true events, this play explores 

how this condition gradually penetrates every element of someone’s life and 

proves how sometimes laughter is not only the best medicine, but often the only

8.15pm Robot Penguin (£12–£15) 

“A little less Attenborough, more cybernetic furry Louis Theroux.” 

Winner of the Baloney Award 2023, Emperor Spy Cam A10N3 has returned from his 

Antarctic investigation for the BBC. In his performance review he’ll be covering 

his infiltration of a penguin colony, struggles to adapt to their complex and 

contradictory society, and his code-breaking feelings towards one of the subjects. 

A bizarre, irreverent comedy about depersonalisation and the neurodivergent 

experience through the ‘lens’ of an undercover robotic penguin. Check website for

Join Wanstead photographer Geoff Wilkinson as he discusses his pictures of a

7.30pm Wanstead Book Festival presents: Paterson Joseph (£10) 

It’s time everyone knew the story of Charles Ignatius Sancho. In the mid-1700s, 

a boy born on a slave ship found his way to Georgian London and miraculously 

survived. The boy grew and went on to tread the boards of London’s theatres, 

become a composer, led the fight to end slavery and become the first black person 

to vote in Britain. His diaries, dazzlingly made into a novel by Paterson Joseph, 

paint a portrait of English history that’s rarely if ever heard. The Secret Diaries of 

Charles Ignatius Sancho won the 2023 Christopher Bland Prize. 


8pm Wanstead Comedy Night feat Paul Sinha (£15) 

Paul Sinha – voted the UK’s Best Club Comedian – takes a break from The Chase 

to headline Wanstead Comedy Night. Fresh from Edinburgh, with a brand new set, 

Paul will make this his fifth Wanstead Fringe appearance! 



7.30pm Wanstead Book Festival presents: Natalie Lee (£10) 

Natalie Lee is familiar to thousands of people through her Instagram presence 

as @StyleMeSunday. Her book, Feeling Myself, is about how warped society’s 

approach to sex has become and how the shame that surrounds conversation 

about sex can hold women back. Taking us through her journey, from traumatic 

beginnings to marriage, motherhood and divorce, it’s a story of learning to be your 

true self in a society that doesn’t prioritise your pleasure. 



7.30pm Wanstead Quiz Night (£12) 

Wanstead High School is hosting a bumper quiz, with a great host, well-stocked 

bar and complementary nibbles to keep brain power up! It’s Wanstead High 

School’s PTA’s first time on the Fringe calendar and this event marks the start 

of a fundraising campaign for the school’s 100th year. A community event – all

The popular Wanstead Fringe Jumble trail is back! The original, biggest and best 

local trail returns, bringing jumble trail fans to Wanstead from all over East London. 

The Jumble Trail offers a brilliant opportunity to clear out your wardrobe and free 

up some space in the toy cupboard! It also provides a great excuse to get out there 

and meet the neighbours, steal ideas for your garden, and just have a general 

wander around the area. There will be a Central Hub behind the Corner House on 

Wanstead High Street, where you’ll also be able to pick up a Jumble Trail map and 

visit several stalls.

7.30pm Wanstead Book Festival presents Sohom Das (£10) 

Forensic psychiatrist Sohom Das has spent 15 years trying to understand, treat and 

rehabilitate dangerous people. His work takes him to high security prisons and 

securely locked hospital wards across the country, as well as to courtrooms where 

he gives evidence as an expert witness. In In Two Minds, a revealing, honest and 

– at times – humorous memoir, Dr Das shares stories from his work, and how he’s 

learned to live with mistakes when the worst happens. 



7.30pm An Evening of Spoken Word (£8) 

Back for its third year, the Fringe’s Evening of Spoken Word has become a ‘must do’ 

on the schedule. City Place Coffee, at the heart of the High Street, transforms into 

a cabaret-style venue, including a bar, for an intimate evening of poetry, spoken 

word and music from eight diverse artists.

7pm Documentary Photography – Why Bother? Who Cares? (£7.50) 

You may have seen Russell Boyce’s pictures of Wanstead High Street business 

owners last year. You might have seen his post-Covid exhibition ‘Overheard in 

Lockdown’ in Wanstead Park this year. We’re continuously bombarded with live 

colour images from every corner of the world so why bother to shoot pictures on 

the doorstep in black and white using a vintage camera? Who cares? Find out from 

Russell himself.

7.30pm Wanstead Book Festival presents: Helen Day – Visions of our future (£10) 

Ladybird Books are instantly recognisable. As well as helping generations of 

children learn to read, they represented a vision of how people perceived their 

lives as things were changing around them. Helen Day is the unofficial historian 

of the role the books played in our lives. She will be celebrating the art, the books 

and the values which they represented. Wanstead’s Oxfam bookshop will be 

celebrating the books too by exhibiting as many Ladybird books as it has been able 

to collect – and this is your chance to buy a piece of all our history. 



7.30pm Concert: Low Strings Drama (£10) 

Join award-winning composer – and Wanstead resident – Simone Spagnolo for a 

unique blend of chamber music and mystery drama soundtracks. This concert will 

present Low Strings Drama, a musical drama for viola and violoncello in eleven 

variations that alternates tense and turbid moments to frantic passages and 

dreamy melodies.

7.30pm Wanstead Book Festival presents: Tim Burrows (£10) 

Until 1965, Wanstead was truly a part of Essex, and even now there are tell-tale 

signs all around us of a time before it became part of a London borough. In the 

1980s, though, Essex became the stuff of tabloid headlines, supposed stereotypes 

and populist politics. Author Tim Burrows, in his book The Invention of Essex, says 

it is still regarded as the heartland of Thatcherism and Brexit but nevertheless is 

the place where England is most itself. He will be in conversation with celebrated 

local historian and psychogeographer (and star of the Wanstead Fringe in 2022 and 

2014) John Rogers.

7pm Dark Isle: a new musical (£12; conc: £10) 

Dark Isle is a new musical written by Wanstead-based actor and writer Katherine 

Tripp, alongside Matthew Hessey and composer Ralph Warman. The performance 

will be a concert version of the musical, with two acts and a short interval. The 

musical is based on the true story of the ‘Flannan Isles Mystery’. In 1900, three 

lighthouse keepers mysteriously disappeared from their posts on the Flannan 

Isles in the Outer Hebrides. The musical is a depiction of what ‘could’ have 

happened, and how it affected the women who were left behind. Though the show 

is suitable for all ages, the complex themes of death, grief and isolation may be 

best suited for those 16 and over. Some loud sound effects may be used during 

the performance.

Take a Bow, Wanstead 

From rugby to robots, Fiona Gordon takes a look at some of this year’s 

Fringe theatre offerings, and thanks the local venues that will make 

these performances truly memorable 

When actors take a bow, they are 

receiving thanks on behalf of 

people behind the scenes who 

make a show possible. This year, before the 

shows even started production, the thanks 

firmly belong to two well-loved venues in 

Wanstead. Because of them we have some 

cracking shows at this year’s Fringe, and 

one venue in particular is hoping to delight 

audiences for many years to come. But 

more of that later. 

Wanstead Theatre Co has been gaining a 

reputation for producing West End-quality 

shows in local venues on or near the High 

Street. Their play about a jumble sale was 

performed in Our Lady of Lourdes church hall 

and their play about pub life was performed 

in The Bull. This year, they read a lot of plays 

trying to find one that matched a Wanstead 

venue, and thanks to Eton Manor RFC, a 

long-term collaborator with the Fringe, they 

have found the perfect comedy. Breakfast 

with Jonny Wilkinson is set on that glorious 

morning when England won the Rugby World 

Cup for the first and only time. Dave’s position 

as chairman of his local rugby club is being 

challenged by an extremely loud Australian. 

Why does Jake, the club’s best player, keep 

disappearing? Why has Nigel’s wife stopped 

him from wearing a nun’s outfit? And why 

have only seven people turned up to watch 

the game of the century? 

What gives this production an extra kick is not 

only that it marks the 20th anniversary of that 

momentous event, but that the day before the 

Fringe starts, so does the Rugby World Cup 

2023. Shows are on non-match days, however, 

so they don’t clash with any on-pitch dramas! 

Baloney Theatre are back this year after their 

compelling A Non-Emergency with not one, 

Scenes from last year’s 

Wanstead Fringe theatre 

but two very special shows. The Room Upstairs 

explores the invisible illness of ME through 

the lens of a mother-daughter relationship 

with lots of puppets, a self-deprecating 

actor, far too many biscuits and a sprinkle of 

absurdity. And Robot Penguin, winner of the 

Baloney Award 2023, is a bizarre, irreverent 

comedy about depersonalisation and the

The two shows will be performed at The Bull 

and here is why this particular collaboration 

deserves a special thanks. At the kind 

invitation of The Bull, the Fringe planning 

team have spent many hours discussing ideas, 

compiling research and using funds to fit 

out the upstairs bar with theatre lights and 

a lighting deck to create a more permanent 

home for Fringe theatre. To provide a 

dedicated venue for theatre on our High 

Street all year round is amazing and a great 

reason to take a bow!

Ageing comedy 

Over the last 40 years or so, a lazy mythology has built up around the 

evolution of stand-up comedy in the UK, says Jon Fentiman, organiser of 

the Fringe’s comedy nights 

The lazy mythology goes something 

like this: up until the late 1970s, standup 

comedy was dominated by nasty, 

bigoted white men telling sexist, racist and 

homophobic jokes and was essentially a 

right-wing enterprise. Then, suddenly, in 

1980, the revelation that was alternative 

comedy exploded onto the scene, 

pioneered by the likes of Ben Elton and 

Alexei Sayle, who wrestled stand-up from 

the hands of these nasty comedians and 

comedy became an essentially left-wing 

progressive enterprise. 

The reality, however, is far more nuanced. 

Without a doubt, casual racism, sexism and 

homophobia were woven into the fabric of 

many comedy routines before the advent of 

alternative comedy, but only a few comedians 

made outright bigotry the mainstay of their 

acts. After all, the 1970s were the heyday of 

comedy greats such as Les Dawson, Ken Dodd, 

Tommy Cooper and Morecambe and Wise. 

It should also be recognised that whilst 

alternative comedy helped pioneer a different 

approach to stand-up, it wasn’t particularly 

left-wing politics that provided its original 

inspiration. 

Rather than simply telling jokes – mostly 

written by other people – the new comedians 

began writing their own material and gave 

themselves license to talk about real-life 

experiences in amusing and entertaining 

ways. The vast majority of acts were hilariously 

anarchic, and they seemed to take inspiration 

from the energy and irreverence of the punk 

era and the spirit of the old music hall rather 

than leftist politics. 

In the 1980s and 1990s, there was tension 

and sometimes even animosity between

the old-school and new comedians, with the 

latter often satirising the formulaic structure 

of the former’s routines. But gradually, 

over time, a more respectful relationship 

ensued, with many of the new comedy acts 

acknowledging the influences of and respect 

for their predecessors. 

Now, despite alternative comedy becoming 

the mainstream, against the odds, some 

old-school comedians have survived the 

test of time. And these comedians can still 

have modern-day comedy club audiences in 

hysterics. Mick Miller, whose career stretches 

six decades (a regular on 1970’s TV show The 

Comedians), is one such comedian. Now in his 

seventies, Mick has adapted and honed his 

material, and with the emergence of TikTok 

and Instagram, his comedy genius is wooing 

a new generation and proving himself as the 

ultimate survivor of stand-up comedy.

The Wheel Argentina 

In a Wanstead Fringe travelogue with a difference, Carole Edrich invites 

you to sample some of the wines emblematic of her experience of 

cycling to every winery in Argentina 

Salta Province has sub-tropical weather. 

That means either pouring rain or 

hot sun and humidity in the lowlands 

or hot sun with more hot sun everywhere 

else. Salta is mostly desert. The thermal 

amplitude makes for amazing wines. 

Downhill towards the city. Wet and humid. 

On a normal trip, humidity would have been 

welcome. Humidity is useful when so many 

people smoke because it makes the smoke – 

and all smells – stick to the people who cause 

them. Not this trip. Cycling in this humidity is 

like swimming through treacle. Exhausting, 

sweaty and no sane person would do it. 

I find my hotel in Salta – the only one in the 

entire five-month adventure that the local PRs 

have organised – and immediately go for a 

shower. The pipes grumble. I wait. The water 

comes out a bright, vivid green. I decide to go 

without. No energy for grumbling. Tonight, I 

decide that sweaty is betty-er. 

There are few excitements to compare with 

one’s first night in a strange new place. 

Despite my weariness and a deplorable urge 

to throw off my cycling kit and watch Latin 

soaps on the probably black-and-white 

portable TV in my room, I set out to immerse 

myself in the town. After all, I might never 

come here again. Live this precious moment 

to the full! I think. Savour the experience. Meet 

people. Make notes. Crush each ripe fruit of 

sensation against the palate until the appetite 

is cloyed in intoxicating richness. 

Richness. Savour. Palate. Appetite… That 

brings me to food. The restaurants are closed 

when I eventually find them, what with it 

being a Sunday, half-past March and everyone 

being at home for their weekly family asado 

(directly translated: ‘bar-b-cue’ or ‘grill’, 

culturally translated: more meat than you can 

eat and then some). In the end, in a garage 

that has run out of petrol, I find a couple of 

boiled cardboard media lunas (pasties) and 

two dented plastic bottles of water in slightlyless-than-two-litre 

holders. 

That night, I wake up to scuttling. After 

being run over by cockroaches in bed in the 

‘pleasantly intimate’ cupboard they have 

booked for me to share with said cockroaches, 

the minutes of the luminous green clock that 

I can neither turn off nor cover creep to 6am. I 

make the decision to get up and cycle through 

horizontal rain to my next destination, leaving 

the cockroaches to feast on the second media 

luna, which I haven’t been able to face. 

Onwards, and uphill (again), to Cafayate. This 

is the penultimate stage of my nine-stage bike 

ride through the wine trails of Argentina. On 

12 September, we’ll have time to talk about 

four of the stages – and we’ll be tasting four 

wines that match my experience that covered 

4,500km through the wineries of Argentina.

I 

was born in the East End some 60-odd 

years ago, and as an urban kid, I found 

the parks and green spaces I fell in 

love with offered an entirely different 

playground to my usual surroundings. 


Valentines Park, Lodge Farm Park and Raphael 

Park to mention a few. And then carving for 

a 12-piece animal sculpture trail in Highams 

Park, partly funded by the Arts Council. This 

was a fantastic boost for me. 

Many years later, just as the new millennium 

dawned, I found myself mooching around 

Hainault Forest and happened across a guy 

carving the woodhenge that was to be placed 

around the forest for people to find as they 

explored the woods. He had started the 

project carving the life cycle of a frog, and 

although it was rough cut and nowhere near 

finished, I was very impressed with his work. 

In conversation with the artist, he suggested 

I could carve if I chose to. But my thinking at 

that time told me I couldn’t do such an artistic 

thing. Plus, how could I afford tools? So, that 

was that. 

Around March 2022, I was asked to carve some 

pieces for another natural play project in 

Wanstead Park, and in July 2023, I found myself 

carving in the park I used to roam as a young 

child. Mad how life twists and turns, eh? I feel 

chuffed that my work is so well received. 

A big thank you to all those who have aided 

and assisted me – past and present – to allow 

me to get my art out there. 

Roll on 2014 when, by chance, en route from a 

family visit to a volunteer group at Audley End 

House, I saw Andy Butcher’s version of the Tiki 

head theme. Once again, I was impressed with 

this guy’s work: carvings made on sevenfoot-tall 

logs. Long story short, I saved 

up and purchased one, which is still 

in my workshop today. From there, 

we struck up a friendship and I was 

encouraged by him to have a go. 

This time, the ‘I can’t’ thoughts 

were silenced. 

I got a second-hand 

Sthil, a little domestic 

chainsaw that was 

perfect for the job, 

and a cheap grinder. I 

had begun. Later that 

year, I moved into a small 

woodland to get closer to 

the wood resource I was working 

with. Rough living, but I enjoyed it. Then, after 

a couple of years selling my bits roadside 

and to the odd person here and there (these 

small sales encouraged me to keep at it), I 

got my first project, which was to carve a 

12-foot standing tree trunk in a local school. 

That project was well received and word soon 

got around. After that, I was asked to carve a 

fallen tree in Henry Reynolds Park for a natural 

play area. Then other projects came along, in

Wanstead’s loss 

Following the recent death of Jean Maestri – the proprietor of the 

Wanstead Park Tea Hut for over 30 years – the Maestri family reflect on 

the life of the Queen of Wanstead Park 

Jean was born on 22 September 1944 

in Dagenham. She was the youngest 

of three children. Her childhood 

memories were playing on the bomb sites 

and having games of rounders with her 

friends between four trees in the street. 

She went to school with Terry Venables 

(the famous footballer), who was a year 

above her. She left school at the age of 15 

and surprised everyone by getting a job as 

a medical receptionist at the Royal London 

Hospital, where she worked for eight years 

until she had her first baby. 

She met her husband Giovanni in a crowded 

Trafalgar Square on Bonfire Night back in 

1960. He asked her if she had seen his cat. It 

was a chat-up line and she fell for it (and him). 

Jean and Giovanni were together for the rest 

of her life. They got married in 1965, and a 

year later bought the house they lived in ever 

since. Jean and Giovanni went on to have five 

children and fostered 60 others. 

As her husband was Italian and worked in 

the ice cream trade, this inspired Jean to 

get an ice cream van with her friend and 

go back to work. In 1986, after many years 

of working in the ice cream van, Jean came 

across the old wooden boat house cafe in 

Wanstead Park. It was in a right old state and 

the cafe needed a lot of love and TLC, which 

is where Jean came in. She applied to the 

Corporation of London to get it rebuilt and 

their architect designed the building to match 

the Temple nearby. 

Jean continued to run the Wanstead Park 

Tea Hut for 37 years. She loved this cafe and 

dedicated her life to it, working seven days 

a week. She became the life and soul of 

Wanstead Park and would have her regulars, 

who loved coming over to see her daily for 

Jean Maestri at the 

Wanstead Park Tea Hut 

a cup of tea and a chat. Jean loved baking 

and all her cakes were homemade. She was 

especially known for her homemade bread 

pudding, an old recipe handed down from 

her mum. People would get very upset if they 

turned up and it was sold out! 

When the pandemic hit, Jean took a back 

seat, retired at home and bought herself a 

Pomeranian dog to keep her and her husband 

company. She loved her little dog, Fluffy, 

so very much and she became the apple of 

her eye. Jean was also very lucky to have 10 

grandchildren, who all absolutely loved and 

adored her. 

We would like to thank all of the customers, 

the people of Wanstead and the Corporation 

of London for all of the kind messages, love 

and support we have received. Jean died on 

30 June 2023. She was a wonderful, kind and 

caring lady who will be sadly missed by all.

Planting ideas 

The Aldersbrook Horticultural Society’s new season of talks kicks off this 

month with a presentation by Danny Clarke, aka The Black Gardener. 

Here, Ruth Martin introduces some of the other names on the bill 

After a break in August, the members 

of Aldersbrook Horticultural 

Society are looking forward to 

another great year and a busy programme 

from September. 

Our last eventful year ended with a fun social 

with good food and prosecco, hosted by 

Jane Batey and Rob Owen, which followed 

a fascinating walk in Wanstead Park led by 

John Meehan. He pointed out the origins and 

development of a number of interesting trees 

and explained that the park was established 

in the early 1820s after Wanstead House was 

demolished. No doubt we will learn more 

about the origins of Wanstead Park at our 

November meeting, when Hannah Armstrong, 

author of Wanstead House, East London’s Lost 

Palace, will talk to us about the gardens of 

Wanstead House. Hannah is among a number 

of excellent and interesting speakers we have 

lined up for the coming year. 

Things get underway with Danny Clarke, also 

known as The Black Gardener, speaking at 

our September meeting about ‘gardening 

on a budget’. Danny is a garden designer 

and appears on ITV’s Love Your Garden. We 

will also hear from Fergus Garrett, the head 

gardener at the iconic Great Dixter Garden 

in East Sussex, who will talk at our February 

meeting about succession planting. Fergus is 

described as one of the most influential living 

garden designers and horticultural educators 

in Britain today, and is the chief executive of 

the Great Dixter Charitable Trust. 

As well as hosting nationally known speakers, 

we are continuing to use our many local 

enthusiasts and experts to talk about aspects 

of gardening and horticulture on a range 

of topics, including a talk by Mark Kenny 

about his garden in Ilford that he opens

for the National Gardening Scheme, two 

local gardeners, Barry Reeves and Elaine 

Fieldhouse, talking about composting, and 

a keen allotmenteer, Celia Parker, taking 

us through a ‘year on the plot’. At least two 

garden visits will be organised over the next 

year: to Sissinghurst Castle Gardens in June 

and to The Gibberd Garden in Harlow in 

January to see the snowdrops and early-spring 

bulbs. Cerith Lowery from The Gibberd Garden 

will also speak at our January meeting. 

Aldersbrook Horticultural Society was reestablished 

in 2018, a hundred years after 

the original society was set up. We regularly 

work in our two community gardens at 

the Aldersbrook Medical Centre and the 

Aldersbrook Bowls Club (where we hold our 

meetings). Over the last year, we opened 20 

gardens locally and raised more than £5,000 

for local and national charities. We are a 

friendly bunch of keen gardeners, novice 

gardeners, allotmenteers, and those interested 

in the natural environment. All are welcome. 

Aldersbrook Horticultural Society meet 

at Aldersbrook Bowls Club on the second 

Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm

Good evening 

Ahead of an evening talk about Sir Alfred Hitchcock for the Wanstead 

Historical Society this month, Gary Lewis reflects on his journey to 

becoming a tour guide and speaker centred around the iconic director 

Good evening (as Leytonstone’s 

favourite son himself would say). 

My name is Gary Lewis. I’m a local 

historian, public speaker and tour guide on 

the subject of the late, great film director, 

Sir Alfred Hitchcock. 

Hitchcock was born on 13 August 1899 

in Leytonstone. Known as the Master of 

Suspense, he directed over 50 feature films 

before receiving an American Film Institute 

Life Achievement Award. He made his 

directorial debut with the silent film The 

Pleasure Garden in 1925. His first successful 

film, The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog 

(1927), helped to shape the thriller genre, while 

his 1929 film Blackmail was the first British 

‘talkie’. He died in California on 29 April 1980. 

I’ve been a resident of Leytonstone for over 40 

years, but my fascination with Hitchcock really 

began when I was a teenager in the late 1970s. 

One Sunday night, I stayed up late to watch 

Psycho on TV. I remember jumping out of my 

chair at the shower scene and the screeching 

violins have stayed with me to this day. After 

that, I was hooked. Fast forward to October 

2015, I was forced to take early retirement from 

London Underground as a Tube driver due to 

ill health. For the next year, I wondered where 

to turn for my next career move. Inspiration 

struck in September 2016 when I joined the 

Alfred Hitchcock of Leytonstone Society. 

At a meeting of the society in early 2018, I 

proposed presenting a slide show on the 

early life of Hitchcock, entitled ‘Hitchcock’s 

Leytonstone’. They enthusiastically agreed, 

and in May 2018, I gave my first talk at The 

Birds pub. Three more talks followed and soon 

I was hired by local groups, keen to hear about 

Hitchcock’s roots. On 4 September 2019, I gave 

my biggest talk yet to over 100 people for the 

Leyton and Leytonstone Historical Society. 

Sir Alfred Hitchcock 

Having developed my illustrated talk on the 

early life of Alfred Hitchcock, the next logical 

step was to start a guided tour entitled 

‘Walking in the Footsteps of Hitchcock’. On 

29 September 2019, as part of Leytonstone 

Loves Film, I guided 60 people from all over 

the world – including six from Mexico – on my 

first 90-minute tour. 

Sadly, on 11 November 2019, I parted company 

with the Alfred Hitchcock of Leytonstone 

Society. I felt it was time to move on and I 

saw this as a golden opportunity to start 

my own business. On 12 January 2020, the 

dream became a reality and Hitchcock 

Talks and Tours was born. The pandemic 

followed shortly after, but I kept going when 

lockdown allowed. Now, my talks and tours 

are generating interest not only from local 

residents and local clubs but from all over the 

globe. I look forward to bringing Hitchcock’s 

Leytonstone to the world!

Since I was young, I dreamed of 

becoming an artist. I also aspired to be 

a teacher. Unfortunately, my family’s 

economic environment couldn’t provide 

me with artistic nurturing, but after 

graduating from university, I became an art 

teacher, which became my lifelong career. 

Some 15 years ago, I left my teaching position 

of 20 years, having fulfilled that ambition, 

drawing a simple, yet unfinished conclusion 

to the first half of my life. Transitioning from 

full-time teacher to housewife, my pace of life 

slowed, and I decided to reignite my interest 

in painting. In the process of painting, I found 

joy in life and pursued my unfinished dream 

of being an artist in the second half of my life! 

Hong Kong has undergone rapid change in 

recent years, and the fast-paced life there can 

be overwhelming, making it difficult to catch 

one’s breath. When I take a moment to 

pause, I realise things around me have 

vanished without a trace. Old values 

have also faded and become blurred. 

Many old buildings and even the 

skills of experienced craftsmen are 

gradually being eliminated due 

to the loss of economic value. 

However, to me, these scenes and 

the small characters in the city 

are the fragments of my life and 

the pieces of my growth. Hence, 

I enjoy roaming the streets, 

exploring historical sites and 

searching for subjects to paint. I 

hope to use colours to preserve 

past emotions and memories, 

capturing fleeting encounters and 

vanishing moments, allowing my 

art to retain a strong local flavour. 

Ten months ago, I left my native Hong 

Kong and moved to the UK, settling in 

Wanstead. Exploring the community has 

become a means of understanding the local 

culture. Many beautiful historical buildings 

have captured my attention and I couldn’t 

resist putting them into my paintings, like 

Christ Church pictured here. 

Since I don’t have many local friends, I 

have been sharing my finished works in 

community groups online. Through this, 

I also got to know more about the local 

landmarks. I discovered these historical 

buildings hold unique meaning for individual 

residents, just like my own desire to preserve 

certain architectural scenes; they are puzzle 

pieces of my life. And so, I completed one 

artwork after another, and painting has 

become my daily life and motivation here 

in Wanstead.

Friends at work 

In the second of two articles looking at the work taking place to 

improve Wanstead Park, the Friends of Wanstead Parklands’ chairman 

Peter Brimson expresses concerns over the condition of the park’s lakes 

I 

was elected as chairman of the Friends 

of Wanstead Parklands earlier this year. 

Last month, I reported on the positive 

developments in the works concerning 

Wanstead Park’s Temple (the visitor centre) 

and the historic Grotto remains.

The condition of the park’s lakes, however, 

gives fewer grounds for optimism. The 

Corporation of London (who manage the 

park) has made a firm commitment of £1.15m 

to strengthen the dams in the lake cascade. 

The finance is committed as a requirement 

of the Environment Agency to prevent 

dam failure in the event of flooding or the 

earth dams drying out in a drought. These 

works are necessary, and should start in 

autumn 2024, but will do nothing for the 

most visible problem: the drying out of the 

Ornamental Water. 

The Corporation of London is prepared to 

fund pumping water from the River Roding 

into the Ornamental Water during the winter 

months. Unfortunately, this requires a licence 

from the Environment Agency, which has 

not so far been forthcoming. We hope the 

Environment Agency will grant a licence in the 

foreseeable future, but there is no guarantee. 

If the licence is withheld, there is no other 

major source of water replenishment, which 

would lead to the current state of drying 

remaining indefinitely. 

Another possible source of at least some water 

for the lakes was a series of small drainage 

schemes that would channel excess water 

from roads, the golf course and other adjacent 

land into the water bodies. The scheme 

failed to attract funding from the Greater 

London Association. At the June Epping 

Forest Consultative Group, the Corporation 

of London was asked about how the scheme

might be taken forward. The reply was 

that a further consultant’s report would be 

commissioned. No doubt the search for funds 

for this scheme will continue, but once again, 

there are no guarantees. 

Looking at the longer term, I have to flag 

up the risk to the future of both Perch Pond 

and Heronry Pond. At present, the Heronry 

Pond is prone to considerable leakage. There 

has been a long-term failure on the part of 

the Corporation of London to fix these leaks. 

However, both Heronry Pond and Perch Pond 

are kept full by pumping water into them from 

an underlying aquifer. This is a most welcome 

arrangement, but again, it does depend 

on a licence from the Environment Agency 

to continue pumping. The current licence 

expires in 2028 and there is no guarantee the 

renewal will be granted given the looming 

water shortages in London and the South 

East. I sincerely hope pumping will continue 

post-2028, as without this water supply – and 

the leaks being repaired – the lakes will simply 

drain away.

The Law, Seriously 

Derek Inkpin from local solicitors Axiom DWFM takes the law seriously, 

but even he knows sometimes the law can be an ass… especially if 

you get a bit tipsy in a pub 

We are surrounded by laws and 

regulations every day of our lives, 

the dos and don’ts which regulate 

society and all of us in it. However, against 

the serious background of most rules, the 

following bizarre laws still exist. 

• The Licencing Act 1872 makes it clear you 

can’t be drunk in a pub, and since 2003, bar 

staff cannot legally serve drunk people. 

Time to practice your sober face. 

• The Madhouses Act 1774 restricts property 

owners to one “lunatic” per residence. 

• If you fire a cannon within 300 yards of 

residential properties, you will commit an 

offence under the Metropolitan Police Act 

1839. (So, measure out 301 yards to avoid an 

issue). 

• If you want to avoid a library fine, 

confirmation that you have cholera should 

do the trick under section 25 of the Public 

Health (Control of Disease) Act 1985. 

• If your alarm goes off at 3am, failing to stop 

it breaks the Clean Neighbourhoods and 

Environment Act 2005. 

• You can be annoying in public, unless you 

go to the library, in which case, irritating 

someone there would be contrary to the 

Library Offences Acts of 1888 and 2005. 

• Unless you don’t mind a £500 fine, don’t 

carry a plank or ladder on a pathway. 

That would be against section 54 of the 

Metropolitan Police Act 1839. 

• Knock down ginger (you remember, 

knocking and scarpering for fun) is illegal 

and could land you with a £500 fine. 

• Whatever you do, don’t beat your dusty rug 

in the street. Pollution is OK, but giving your 

neighbour a tickly throat is definitely out. 

• Singing obscene lyrics in the street is an 

offence; just hum the dodgy parts to avoid 

a fine. Yes, it’s that Metropolitan Police Act 

1839 again. 

• Everyone knows you cannot open someone 

else’s mail, but delaying the post contradicts 

the Postal Services Act 2000, so no chatting 

to the postie, please. 

• Looking guilty holding a salmon suggests 

you are a poacher and therefore liable for 

an offence under the Salmon Act 1986. 

• A bye-law passed by Daventry District 

Council in 2015 prescribes that failing 

to produce an empty poo bag when 

challenged could result in a £100 fine. 

So, now you’ve been told.

Sometimes you see it, sometimes you 

don’t, but if you walk across Lake 

House Road from Jubilee Pond, or 

take the rough route over the ant hills in 

that same direction, you may discover a 

small, semi-permanent pond that goes by 

the curious name of Cat and Dog Pond. The 

site presumably gets its name from the fact 

that it’s only visible when it’s been raining 

‘cats and dogs’. 

First shown in an 1863 map as a body of water 

with a course going towards Harrow Lane 

(now Harrow Road), it was possibly a sluice to 

help drain the road. Another line on the map 

shows a ditch or water course running toward 

an area of the Flats known as the Brickfield. 

Early reports, when the area was used for 

mining clay and gravel for brickmaking, 

mention a water course there. 

If you’re lucky enough, you will see the pond 

filled with water, and then next time you visit, 

it’s gone, choked by undergrowth and lost 

from view. 

It may have come to your attention that a few 

of us have being doing a bit of work at this 

old, neglected site over the past few years. 

The pond was in danger of drying out and 

becoming scrubbed over, threatening the 

amphibians, invertebrates and water birds 

that depend on it. In an effort to reverse this 

onslaught and restore this historic landscape, 

channels have been dug around the pond to 

form a network of ditches – a Wanstead Flats 

Wetlands – with tall rushes rising around the 

edge of the waterscape and birds fleeting 

between the reeds and bushes.

to A&E and the unavoidable conclusion that I 

hadn’t a clue as to what I was doing. 

It did look quite impressive over that first 

winter as the rain filled the pond. Water 

actually remained throughout the first 

summer, bringing in the butterflies, damsels, 

dragonflies and, of course, frogs and newts. 

Last year, the weather turned against us and 

warned of what’s coming down the line as 

the climate catastrophe takes hold. The frogs 

managed to get out before the pond dried 

up, but I’m not sure the newts were so lucky. 

The drought also clobbered the planting 

we’d done around the site and, at one point, 

it looked like we lost most of the 200-plus 

trees and shrubs we had put in. Come the rain 

in August and September, we were pleased 

to see many bouncing back. Not that you’ll 

see many of them this year as the grass has 

swamped everything and – with the help 

of burrowing critters – has made it a bit 

dangerous to guess where the paths are, so 

take care! 

We will be back (once the autumn migration 

is over in October) as this is a job that 

keeps on giving! Thanks to all my team 

of volunteers, especially Mark Thomas, 

Sean K, Sean T (aka JF), Tony Abbott and not 

forgetting Trevor ‘The Mole’. 

Getting permission from the authorities to 

go ahead with the project was, I assumed, 

going to be the hardest part. That naive 

assumption was put to bed the first 

day of diving into the reeds. Get 

a fork in, dig out the reeds, 

plant them further down 

the ditches – easy. Not! 

So, here we are, three 

years on, seven pairs of 

wellingtons, one broken 

fork, one spade, six pairs
