Update: Woodside Bridge - Initial target reached! 

Exmoor National Park Authority and Lyn Communiy Development Trust have been 

campaigning to raise funds for a new footbridge at Woodside on the East Lyn Valley, 

near Lynmouth, since 2017. 

Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of local people and visitors, including a fabulous 

recent donation of £15,000, our initial target for Woodside Bridge has been reached. 

We are keeping the appeal open while the planning application and final design details 

and quotes are completed. Any additional donations received will go towards further 

design and landscape enhancements. 

We hope to make another announcement in November once final plans are in place. In 

the meantime, our warm thanks go to everyone who has contributed to the appeal. 

The new footbridge will ensure 1000’s of people can enjoy the short easy circuit from 

Lynmouth along the lower reaches of the East Lyn river. 

The crossing will lead to Middleham Memorial Gardens (honouring losses from the 

terrible Lynmouth Flood of 1952) and the beauty and wildlife of the river and its 

surrounding woodland.

Dear Readers 

Light in the darkness 

Now the kids have settled back into school and the weather is starting to change 

towards the colder end of the mercury, I am going to talk about keeping warm. Sounds 

odd I know, but some of the following devices might be of interest. Cold hands? How

temperature controlled mug is what you need. Not cheap at £150 but controlled by an

Here in Murcia, Spain, we have had the worst flooding in more than 100 years. 7 

deaths and 3,500 people evacuated by emergency services. I have seen some horrific 

videos, and amazing rescues. Some friends of mine, Richard and his wife Leisl, have 

lost everything. His heartbreaking video can be seen here https://bit.ly/2kKe0CF taken 

after he finally managed to get back to his home two days after they were evacuated. 

His friends have rallied around and a gofundme page was created that is at nearly 

£15,000, to help them rebuild. What I find most amazing is that there are people 

donating who don’t even know them. Sometimes technology can be a good thing, to 

bring light to the darkness. 

In the local resort at La Torre Golf, they have used technology and Whatsapp groups to 

organise help to those who really need it. The flood defences buckled and hundreds of 

homes and garages were flooded along with the Hilton Hotel. With the group which was 

created, people are able to ask for help, and also offer it. Organising everything from 

showers, and washing, food and drinks to help those on clean-up, and get shopping for 

those who have lost their cars. 

Technology speeds up the dissemination of information and that is essential. I had 

cause to use an app to report an incident to the local police. Within a few minutes I was 

“chatting” with an operator, sending video in real time so they could determine the 

urgency of the situation. These apps and services are part of everyday life, and when 

used properly can be a huge help to people.

MINIBUS TRIPS FROM LYNTON 

There are two types of trips by minibus operating 

from Lynton: 

1. Half-day trips to a variety of locations across 

Devon & Somerset. These are on alternate 

Thursdays - £7 per person. These trips are 

designed for those unable to get out easily, 

but are open to all on a first come, first served 

basis. The minibus leaves Lynton Town Hall @ 

9am sharp, returning for 2pm, allowing roughly 

three hours at our chosen destination.

booking. We take up to 13, and are keen to have 

a full complement to ensure these trips remain 

economic. The phrase: 'Use It or Lose It' comes to

Lyn Defibrillator Fund 

The Lyn Defibrillator Fund has been created to help raise awareness 

and funds to replace our ageing Defibrillators. The current three 

Defibrillators will be taken out of service very soon as they can no 

longer be supported by the NHS due to their age as replacement parts 

cannot be sourced. Our aim is to increase the amount of Defibrillators 

in the Lyn Valley to cover all areas. We already have one at the Town 

Hall available 24/7, also one at the Lynton Health Centre, available 

with a member of staff during opening hours. 

Four Defibrillators have already been purchased and one of the old Defibrillators has already 

been replaced and is sited at the Lyndale Tea Rooms. New additional Defibrillators have been 

installed at the Cottage Inn, telephone box at Barbrook, and on the wall of the ex-Council 

depot in Belle View Avenue. Thank you to all the proprietors of these properties for allowing 

this. These four are all live and registered with the NHS so in the event one is needed, any 

member of the public will be directed to their location. We have now purchased another four 

Defibrillators and these will be sited very soon at the Cliff Railway bottom station, Lynton Old 

Village Queen Street, Parracombe, and the location of the final one has yet to be agreed. We 

have also pledged to make up the shortfall for a Defibrillator at Holman Park for Lynton 

Football Club which will be part funded by the FA, yet to be finalized. Our initial aim was to 

raise, with your help, £15,000 for eight Defibrillators and their ongoing maintenance. We have 

had the full support of the South West Ambulance Service who supplied them, they will also 

maintain and replace consumables when required, and deliver annual community training for 

residents of the Lyn Valley area as part of the contract. I would like to thank SWAST, Richard 

Oaten and Lee Allen for their continued support and for delivering Defibrillator awareness 

training, without their assistance this would not have been possible. 

The response we have received has been immense, from private donations, businesses, 

Exmoor Federation, events, sponsorship and all the collection pots in establishments 

throughout Lynton, Lynmouth, Barbrook, Parracombe and the whole community of the Lyn 

Valley area. After purchasing eight Defibrillators we have a healthy balance of £13,700 in the 

bank. This means that all the donations and pledges to the fund has surpassed all 

expectations and has now reached some £22,000. We still have donations coming in via 

collection boxes and other means and I am astounded how this initiative has been supported 

and would like to personally thank everyone on behalf of the Lyn Defibrillator Fund Team who 

has donated to the fund to make this possible. We will continue to accept donations and 

fundraise, and perhaps even add more Defibrillators if we see fit. We will monitor, maintain 

submit accreditation reports to SWAST and make sure these Defibrillators are available to the 

public 24/7, 365 days a year, for the benefit of all the residents and visitors in the Lyn Valley 

Area. 

Last but not least, I would like to extend a big thank you to all the Defibrillator Team for all 

their efforts in making this happen.

E-Consult The eConsult service is now available here at Lyn Heath. It offers information on a 

wide range of problems and conditions. Using this feature gives you the option to help yourself 

or retrieve advice from a pharmacy, NHS 111 clinician, or one of the practices clinicians. 

eConsult allows patients who are currently registered at the Practice to consult with a clinician 

online, and offers alternatives to calling or coming into the surgery for common, more minor 

problems. Using this service you can also access self-help content, alternative options 

available to you, eg pharmacy, symptom checkers, access to 111 clinicians and as already 

mentioned, the ability to consult remotely with an appropriate clinician. For further information

Ordering Prescriptions If you are asking for medications early please ensure you have made a 

note on the repeat request to say why this is required early, as any requests more than 7 days 

before they are due will be rejected and not processed. 

FLU Vaccinations – BOOK NOW! Our Clinics will be on Saturday 12th October and Saturday 

16th November. Please ensure you book your appointment as soon as possible. The injected 

Flu Vaccine is offered FREE of charge on the NHS to people who are at risk to ensure that they 

are protected against catching Flu and developing serious complications. You are eligible to 

receive a FREE Flu Jab if you: Are 65 years of age or over, Are pregnant, Have certain medical 

conditions (see below), Are very overweight, Are living in a long-stay residential care home or 

other long-stay care facility, Receive a carer’s allowance, or you are the main carer for an 

elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if you fall ill, Are a healthcare worker 

with direct patient contact, or a social care worker. Medical Conditions covered: Chronic (longterm) 

respiratory diseases such as asthma (which requires an inhaled or tablet steroid 

treatment or has led to hospital admission in the past), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease 

(COPD), or bronchitis, Chronic heart disease such as heart failure, Chronic kidney disease, 

Chronic liver disease, such as hepatitis, Chronic neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s 

disease or Motor Neurone disease, Diabetes, Problems with your spleen – eg. sickle cell 

disease or if you have had your spleen removed, A weakened immune system as the result of 

conditions such as HIV and AIDS, or medication such as steroid tablets or chemotherapy. 

Those who receive their invitation to have the Shingles or Pneumococcal Vaccine may also 

have this given at the same time as the Flu Vaccine. However if you are entitled to all 3, a 2nd 

appointment at another date will be required for the 3rd vaccine as only a maximum of 2 can 

be given at one time. Please contact the Health Centre on 01598 753226 to book your 

appointment. We DO NOT send out invitations for the Flu Vaccinations so please ensure you 

contact us to book. 

Ear Assessment Clinics Unfortunately we will not have any ear assessment clinics available 

from November as we will have no trained nurses available to run the clinic. We hope to 

resume the service early in 2020 and apologise that we will not be able to offer this service.

Exmoor Dark Skies Festival programme announced 

Over fifty events in celebration of Exmoor’s 

spectacular starry skies are set to take place across 

the National Park this autumn as bookings open for 

the region’s third annual Dark Skies Festival. 

From 14th October to 3rd November venues across 

the National Park will take advantage of its status as 

one of three designated International Dark Skies 

Reserves in the country, to host a range of experiences inspired by the wonders of the 

night sky. 

The Festival caters for a wide range of ages and interests with highlights for families 

including this year’s Astro Party at Wimbleball Lake, a 360-degree planetarium 

experience in Dunster, Bampton or Barnstaple, or the National Park’s first ever Dark 

Skies Big Adventure with the National Trust. The full programme is available at

Winners of Lyn in Bloom 2019 

The National Trust Arlington Court Judges said they were 

incredibly impressed with the quality and diversity of plants 

and displays in Lynton and Lynmouth. 

They found choosing winners really difficult as it was all so good. 

BEST OVERALL WINNER – Captain’s House, Lynmouth A charming garden with bold colours. 

Great use of space and plant diversity. Every inch planted and looking beautiful. The whole 

area had great impact and drew you in for a closer look. 

A special thank you to Josie Parker for allowing us to use one of her beautiful photos on the 

front cover.

Tree planting starts in preparation for North Devon Link 

Road improvements 

Planting of around 20,000 trees and shrubs got 

underway in September as part of advanced work 

being undertaken ahead of the start of the main 

improvements to the North Devon Link Road. 

The trees will be planted over a distance of 10km 

between Filleigh and Portmore where work on 

widening the A361 is due to start in 2021. 

As the scheme progresses further, environmental compensation will be carried out to enable 

the scheme to achieve biodiversity net gain. The planting at the side of the road will help 

establish ecological habitats ahead of the Link Road being widened, and it will also screen the 

road from surrounding areas. A planning application has been submitted for proposed 

improvements at Bishop’s Tawton roundabout. Bishop’s Tawton is one of seven junctions 

planned to be improved as part of the multi-million scheme to upgrade the A361 North Devon 

Link Road between South Molton and Bideford. A planning application is also expected to be 

submitted later this year for a pedestrian and cycle bridge at the proposed Landkey 

roundabout.

Plans for a four-screen cinema, hotel and new fast food outlets have gone on display to 

the public. The proposals for the Affinity Devon Shopping Centre in Bideford include a

Top Ten hit for Regal Film 

Society 

Minehead’s Regal Theatre has scored a 

hit with its live screenings of opera and 

ballet from the Royal Opera House (ROH) 

– and gone straight into the top 10 chart 

of UK venues. 

Of more than 250 independent cinemas 

offering live screenings around the 

country, the Regal Film Society has come 

in at No 6 in this year’s chart. Its place – 

based on ticket sales – comes less than 

two years after the society began the live 

screening of performances from the ROH 

which regularly attract audiences of more 

than 300 people from all over West 

Somerset. 

The society’s chair and co-founder, 

Victoria Thomas, said: “This is very 

exciting news and vindicates our decision 

to set up live screenings at the Regal. 

We’re very grateful for the positive 

feedback and support we have from the 

community for these Royal Opera House 

events, and to our technical team of 

volunteers – headed by Martin Smith – 

which has done a great deal of work to 

bring them to the Regal.”

Kentisbury Village Hall for 

lunch.

A full-size piano keyboard boasts 88 keys; that's a lot of potentially wrong notes just 

sitting there waiting for their chance to betray the careless musician. At the 'Village 

Inn' the other night the 'Piano Man' didn't hit any of them. He struck a great chord with 

the housefull of happy Saturday- nighters who packed the bar and overflowed into the 

street outside. Any space available was filled with dancers, singers and people who 

liked to fill spaces that offered some good fun. It was a great night enjoyed by loads of 

locals and visitors alike. Thanks, B; once again you have provided us with some 

fantastic entertainment. 

When you're a 'Mermaid' the world's your lobster..... 

'The Unprofessional Mermaids' raised a few laughs, smiles and not a few shudders 

with their sea shanties, parodies and stuff at the 'Ancient Mariner's cider festival last 

weekend. The event was an incredible success with customers filling the terrace, the 

road outside and the bar. Once again Sam and her team have really pulled out all the 

stops to give us yet another great event! The whole day and evening was filled with 

live music from every genre and gallons of the excellent cider helped keep everything 

rolling along smoothly. However, alcohol alone doesn't make things happen; that 

takes hard work, lots of time and a brilliant organiser’s brain.

Pioneering female mathematician’s forgotten legacy 

It will soon be possible to walk in the footsteps of 19th century 

computer pioneer Ada Lovelace as work has begun to restore and 

reveal parts of the historic carriage routes, viewpoints and other 

features which formed part of her Porlock estate. It is while walking 

the terraces of these once ornate gardens that Ada and the famous 

mathematician Charles Babbage were reputed to have come up with 

the principles behind the „Difference Engine‟ - a forerunner to the 

computer. 

The National Park Authority plans to restore parts of the old carriage ways and other 

features in Culbone Wood, granting walkers on the South West Coast Path a taste of the 

sense of awe that must have been felt upon emerging from historic tunnels into breathtaking 

views out to sea, framed by groves of giant redwoods and firs. On 5th October 

Porlock will be holding their annual “Cream Tea with Inspirational Women” in celebration of 

Ada Lovelace Day honouring achievements of women in science all over the world. The 

ticket only event held at Porlock Village Hall sees Molly Rooke, Hilary Bradt, Lynn Pearson, 

Jane Keeley and Sarah Peterkin share their passions, achievements and inspirations.

Raise Christmas cheer in your Santa gear 

at RHS Garden Rosemoor 

Children‟s Hospice South West‟s spectacular Santas on 

the Run will be returning to RHS Garden Rosemoor this 

December. More than 350 people took part in last year‟s 

festive 2k fun run – the first of its kind held at the gardens 

near Great Torrington – and this year‟s event on Sunday, 

December 8 is expected to be even bigger. 

Registration is now open with 25% off early bird tickets on sale for a limited time only. 

Entry includes a free Santa suit as well as entry to Rosemoor and Christmas event 

village with face painters, music and entertainment. 

Money raised through registration and sponsorship will help support nearly 200 

children and families who use CHSW‟s Little Bridge House Children‟s Hospice in 

Fremington, near Barnstaple. 

Early-bird tickets priced £12 for adults and £6 for children (under twos are free) are 

available until midday on Monday 14 October. Thereafter the price will be £16 for

News from the Exmoor Pony Centre

We have had a very busy summer with families on holiday boosting visitor numbers, and 

activity days every Thursday throughout August. Children have enjoyed seeing behind the 

scenes by joining our stable yard tours and finding out about aspects of our work the 

public don’t often get a chance to see, this was also an opportunity to meet some of the 

ponies. On many days we have been fully booked for group fun riding, taster sessions 

and treks so the ponies have worked extremely hard and are more than ready for their 

annual winter holiday. 

We had an enjoyable, if rather wet and windy, day at Exford Show and also hosted 

several events at the Pony Centre for the Exmoor Pony Festival week including a 

barbecue and quiz evening for 60 people, and a talk about bloodlines by Michael 

Dewhurst. Linzi has also been out and about giving a series of evening talks at Holnicote 

Estate. 

The autumn gatherings are a busy time as we prepare for the new intake of foals. 

If you would like to be involved in our work we have a couple of new job vacancies in our 

riding and pony care team. Job specs are on our web site and Facebook page and we 

would love to hear from you if you are interested. 

Upcoming events: 

23rd and 30th October: Join our Exmoor Ponies in discovering The Wildlife of 

Exmoor at Night; a family friendly event with hot chocolate and marshmallows. 

Booking is essential. Adult £3; under 16 £2. 

24th and 31st October: 12 – 3pm: Halloween activity afternoons with spooky 

Halloween Trail. 

We will still be open every day except Tuesday and Saturday until 1st November so do

How to find us 

From the M5 Motorway: From the M5 exit at Junction 27, join the A361 to Tiverton. At the roundabout 

turn right onto the A396, then take the B3222 to Dulverton. From Dulverton take the B3223 Lynton/Exford 

road for approximately 4 miles onto Exmoor. Turn immediately left after the second cattle grid where you 

see the brown tourism sign for the Exmoor Pony Centre. Drive along this road and turn right at the 

wooden Exmoor Pony Centre sign. 

From Minehead: Take the A39 eastward direction Dunster, Williton and Taunton. At Dunster Steep 

traffic lights turn right onto the A396 signposted Tiverton. Follow the A396 for approximately 13 miles, 

going through Wheddon Cross. After approximately 10 miles at Coppleham Cross turn right to Winsford. 

In Winsford turn left (signposted Tarr steps) and immediately left again at the memorial. Continue uphill 

until reaching Spire Cross where you should turn left onto the B3223 direction Dulverton. After 

approximately 1 mile turn right at the brown tourism sign for the Exmoor Pony Centre. Drive along this 

road and turn right at the wooden Exmoor Pony Centre. 



Lynmouth Beachside Bonfire

It is with regret and a heavy heart that we 

have decided to cancel the annual beachside 

bonfire bonanza on 2nd November 2019. 

This is not a decision that we have made 

lightly. The enormous health and safety 

liability and insurance requirements following 

the hugely successful previous two years are 

too onerous for the event to continue in the 

same format. We have decided as a 

committee that this is the best option for the 

event, the organisers and our twin villages. 

Thank you SO MUCH to our amazing 

community who allowed this event to go 

ahead. The committee will provide an update 

on the future of the event in due course.
