William “Bill” Brown<br />

WILLIAM “BILL”<br />

BROWN died on Sunday,<br />

September 22nd at Darthmouth-<br />

Hitchcock Medical Center of natural<br />

causes. He was born on March 15th,<br />

1941 in Colchester, VT to Wilbur<br />

Brown and Katherine Margaret<br />

(Moulton) Brown. He attended<br />

Roxbury School and spent many<br />

years working in the granite industry<br />

as well as serving in the Army National Guard.<br />

He married Ramona (McQueen) Brown on December<br />

15th, 1960. Together they raised three daughters in their<br />

home in Northfield, VT. They later lived in<br />

Williamstown, VT until Ramona’s death in 2010. During<br />

this time Bill worked in the granite sheds in Barre and<br />

Northfield. He even briefly had his own polishing business<br />

“Bill’s Polishing” in Barre. After Bill retired he<br />

worked for Green Mountain Florist Supply delivering<br />

flowers.<br />

Although he was not deployed, he served in the US<br />

Army during the Vietnam era and later in the Vermont<br />

Army National Guard. He remained a proud member of<br />

the American Legion - Post 10 in Barre - until his death<br />

and was also an active member of the American Legion<br />

Riders, a group founded by his daughter, Penny. He was<br />

an active member of the Canadian Club. Bill enjoyed<br />

deer hunting and camping. He also loved fishing with<br />

his wife Ramona, as he stated: “she always made him<br />

laugh.”<br />

Bill was very proud of his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren<br />

he loved to watch them play and laugh.<br />

Bill was a very social man and was known and loved<br />

by many. He will be fondly remembered by his family:<br />

daughter Jeannie Brown of Barre, VT, her partner Larry<br />

Beede, and her children, Angela Stadelmeyer and<br />

Jessica Alix, both of New York; daughter, Penny Brown<br />

of Barre, VT and her children, Crystal Martin of<br />

Williamstown, VT, and Mark Martin Jr, of Northfield,<br />

VT; and daughter, Janice Brown of East Montpelier, her<br />

partner, Barry Rufenacht, and her son, Shawn Moody,<br />

currently of Eagle River, Alaska; his partner Jane<br />

Blanchard; his siblings: brother, Robert Brown of Ware,<br />

MA, and sister, Shirley Cook of Hannibal, NY; and his<br />

nieces, nephews and other family. Sadly, his grandson,<br />

William “Billy” Moody died in 2015.<br />

There will be a memorial service at Trinity United<br />

Methodist Church in Montpelier, VT on Tuesday<br />

October 1st, beginning at 1:00 pm followed by a burial<br />

in Waterbury Center Cemetery next to his wife. The<br />

American Legion Riders will lead the procession to the<br />

cemetery.<br />

away on Monday, September 16,<br />

2019, at the Consulate Health Care of<br />

Baynonnet Point, Hudson, FL. Born<br />

at Heaton Hospital in Montpelier on<br />

November 27, 1940, he was the son of<br />

Celina Pinan Cormier and Edward J.<br />

Cormier. He grew up and received<br />

his education in Montpelier and went<br />

on to serve in the Air Force in Alaska as an aircraft<br />

mechanic. He returned to Vermont and pursued a<br />

career as a cement finisher<br />

Springs, Fl. A graveside committal will be planned for<br />

next summer at Berlin Cemetery.<br />

Fred Robert Harvey<br />

FRED ROBERT HARVEY died on June 10th,<br />

2019 at 6 o’clock in the evening from congestive<br />

heart failure at Barre Gardens in Barre, Vermont.<br />

He died with a family member at his side after a brief<br />

decline.<br />

Fred was born on December 16th, 1922 the first son<br />

and fourth child of Robert Leslie and Mary Edith<br />

(Shorey) Harvey. Fred graduated from Plainfield High<br />

School and, in June of 1943, he enlisted in the Navy,<br />

where he attained the rank of Yeoman Third Class. He<br />

served on the USS General Brooke, which, during a trip<br />

past Calcutta, survived a major typhoon. He was honorably<br />

discharged in May of 1945.<br />

He spent several years teaching in schools around<br />

northern Vermont, then used his GI Bill benefit to<br />

attend the University of New Mexico. After graduation,<br />

he secured a position at the Harvard University Business<br />

School library, where he worked from February 1960<br />

until his retirement in March of 1985. He retired to<br />

Plainfield, living with his sister, Priscilla, in the family<br />

home on Harvey Hill. In his retirement, he was a regular<br />

worshipper at Grace Church, where he often played the<br />

organ for services.<br />

Fred was a bachelor and is survived by his sister,<br />

Barbara, and several generations of nieces and nephews.<br />

He is predeceased by his parents and ten siblings –<br />

Marguerite, Frances, Alice, Dorothy, Irene, William,<br />

Florence, Mary, Bessie and Priscilla.<br />

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October<br />

5th at 2 pm at Grace Methodist Church in Plainfield,<br />

Vermont. An interment of ashes and military salute will<br />

follow at Center Cemetery in Plainfield. All are welcome<br />

to attend.<br />

Memorial gifts can be made to the Veterans of Foreign<br />

Wars and the American Cancer Society.<br />

William “Bill” Shannon<br />

WILLIAM “BILL” SHANNON died<br />

in the early morning hours of<br />

Monday, September 23rd 2019. He<br />

had recently moved to The Arbors in<br />

Shelburne from his son Terence’s<br />

home in Montpelier after a long<br />

struggle with dementia. He leaves<br />

behind seven children and one sister.<br />

Born on June 12, 1933 in Brooklyn,<br />

NY to John and Margaret (Sheehan)<br />

Shannon, Bill was one of 9 siblings. Bill attended schools<br />

in Brooklyn and New Jersey. At 14 he left home to attend<br />

Seminary school in Pennsylvania. Returning to New<br />

Jersey a few years later, he was reunited with fellow<br />

classmates, one being Virginia “Ginny” (Moss) Shannon,<br />

his future wife. They married on January 21, 1955.<br />

Bill worked many years as a stagehand for Broadway<br />

Theaters and ABC Studios in Manhattan. In 1968, with<br />

seven children at the time, Bill and Ginny moved to<br />

Montpelier, VT where Bill continued for a year to work<br />

for the theater coming home on weekends when the job<br />

allowed. In 1969 wanting time with his wife and children,<br />

Bill quit the theater and worked at St. Augustine’s<br />

Church until 1982 when he had open heart surgery.<br />

After his surgery he enjoyed being at home spending<br />

time raising his eighth and youngest child. He enjoyed<br />

cooking, baking, and spending time with his wife, children,<br />

and grandchildren. He assisted with funerals and<br />

Masses at both St. Augustine’s and St. Monica Churches.<br />

Bill is survived by his three daughters: Laureen Wells<br />

of Calais, Therese Sanchez of California, Michelle<br />

Lavallee of Barre Town, and four sons: Kevin Shannon of<br />

Barre City, Martin Shannon of Williamstown, Russell<br />

Shannon of Berlin, and Terence Shannon of Montpelier;<br />

his grandchildren, Mark Shannon and Paul Shannon of<br />

Texas, Andrew Shannon of Berlin, Joseph Carriveau of<br />

East Montpelier, VT, Paul Lavallee of Barre Town,<br />

Matthew Lavallee of Alaska, Lacey Lavallee of Calais,<br />

Olivia Sanchez of CA, and Noah Sanchez of CA. Bill was<br />

pre-deceased by his wife Virginia “Ginny” Shannon in<br />

2015 and son William Jr in 2007.<br />

A Funeral Mass was held for Bill on Monday,<br />

September 30th at 11am at St Augustine’s Church in<br />

Montpelier followed by a burial next to his wife in the<br />

Waterbury Center Cemetery.<br />

Both Bill and Ginny were strong supporters in St.<br />

KAREN-LYNN BEDARD – A committal service for Karen-<br />

Lynn Bedard of Orange who passed away on October 7, 2018<br />

will be held on October 5, 2019 at 11 a.m. at the Brookhaven<br />

DOROTHY M. FONTAINE BISHOP — A funeral service to<br />

honor and celebrate the life of Dorothy M. Fontaine Bishop,<br />

77, of Tilden House, was held on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2019, at<br />

1 p.m. at the Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home in Barre. She<br />

passed away on Sept. 14, 2019, at the Central Vermont<br />

Medical Center Hospital in Berlin. Words of remembrance<br />

were offered by her husband, Thomas Bishop Sr., and other<br />

family members. Following the service, family and friends<br />

gathered at Smolder Mist Pub on Main Street in Barre for a<br />

time of fellowship and refreshments. Arrangements were in<br />

the care of the Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home, 58 Summer St.,<br />

Barre.<br />

PAUL ALAN BRUHN On Sept. 19, 2019, Paul<br />

Alan Bruhn, of South Burlington, died of having<br />

too much fun. It was his heart that finally<br />

couldn’t keep up with him. He was born March<br />

27, 1947, in Burlington, the son of Marion and<br />

Elmer Bruhn. His father died when Paul was<br />

just five months old, and his mother was left to<br />

run the family business, Bruhn Office<br />

Equipment on Church Street in downtown Burlington, as<br />

well as raising three young children. Paul is survived by his<br />

extended family and friends. Memorial gifts may be made to<br />

the Preservation Trust of Vermont, 104 Church St.,<br />

Burlington, VT 05401. There will be a celebration of Paul’s<br />

life on Friday, Oct. 11, 1 p.m., at the Breeding Barn at<br />

CHARLES E. CHEVALIER AND RUTH K. CHEVALIER<br />

— The committal service for Charles E. Chevalier, 88, who<br />

died Feb. 20, 2019, and for his wife, Ruth K. Chevalier, 90,<br />

who died Feb. 10, 2017, will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct.<br />

1, 2019, in Norwich Cemetery in Northfield. Arrangements<br />

CAROLINE J. “CALLY” CLIFTON — The memorial service<br />

for Caroline J. “Cally” Clifton, 64, who died Wednesday,<br />

Sept. 4, 2019, was held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at Berlin<br />

Elementary School, followed by a reception at Berlin<br />

Congregational Church. Arrangements are by Perkins-<br />

ROSELLA IRENE “ROSE” LICKTEIG<br />

CURTSINGER, 91, of Owensboro, passed<br />

away peacefully on Sept. 21, 2019, at her residence<br />

at The Carmel Home. Rose was the<br />

fourth born to William and Anna Lickteig, of<br />

Louisville, and raised on their farm with her<br />

siblings Wilbert, Marie and Ann, all of whom<br />

have preceded her in death. Rose and Tom’s<br />

legacy of love and service lives on through their family.<br />

AGATHA A. DEEP, 83, of Barre, passed away on Friday,<br />

Sept. 20, 2019, at her home, with her loving family at her<br />

bedside. Born in Williamstown on July 25, 1936, she was the<br />

daughter of the late Arthur L. and Lenita Stygles Stone.<br />

Agatha attended local schools and was a graduate of<br />

Williamstown High School, Class of 1954. In 1957, she married<br />

Richard Deep in St. Monica Catholic Church in Barre.<br />

She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Survivors<br />

include her husband of 62 years of marriage, sons, grandchildren,<br />

sisters, brothers, and extended family. A Mass of<br />

Christian Burial to honor and celebrate her life was held on<br />

Thursday, Sept. 26, 2019, at St. Monica Catholic Church in<br />

Barre. Burial followed the Mass, in St. Monica Cemetery in<br />

LOUIS R. “BUD” MESSIER, 92, passed away<br />

peacefully at the Barre Gardens Rehabilitation<br />

Center on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2019. Born in Montgomery on<br />

Oct. 1, 1926, he was the only son of the late Louis A. Messier<br />

and Ida (Lumbra) Messier. Bud attended schools in<br />

Waterbury. In 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served<br />

his country during WWII. Following his honorable discharge<br />

in 1946, he returned to Waterbury where he met<br />

Barbara Trask, the love of his life, and they were married in<br />

Waterbury on July 26, 1947. Bud is survived by his son,<br />

granddaughter, and great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian<br />

Burial was celebrated at St. Andrew Catholic Church in<br />

Waterbury on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2019. Inurnment took<br />

place in Holy Cross Cemetery in Duxbury. For those who<br />

CECIL W. “PETE” TUCKER, 98, a<br />

longtime Graniteville resident<br />

passed away peacefully on Monday, September<br />

9, 2019 at the Woodridge Nursing and<br />

Rehabilitation Center in Berlin. With his passing,<br />

the community has lost his invaluable<br />

memory of local history and innumerable jokes<br />

and stories. Born April 15, 1921 in Barre, he<br />

was the son of William George and Florence Emogene<br />

(Eastman) Tucker. He attended local elementary schools<br />

and graduated from Spaulding High School with the class of<br />

1939. In 1942, Pete joined the U.S. Army Air Corps. Survivors<br />

include his daughter, son, grandchildren, and extended family.<br />

The service to honor and celebrate his life was held on<br />

Saturday, September 28, 2019 in the First Presbyterian<br />

Church of Graniteville. Inurnment took place in the Wilson<br />

Cemetery in Lower Websterville at 10:00 a.m., prior to the<br />
