Young readers and creative children were honoured at a special event following a summer-long competition to
encourage the love of literature. Aberdeenshire Libraries Summer Reading Challenge awards children a sticker for each
book read and a prize after reading six books or more.
Star Reader titles were awarded by each local library, with the overall Aberdeenshire Star Reader title going to ten-yearold
Finlay Watson, a regular at Turriff Library.
Winners took home certificates and a medal produced on a 3D printer. Finlay also received prizes donated by Mackie’s
of Scotland - a £100 book gift card and a year’s supply of ice cream.

Scotland, said: “We’d like to congratulate the talented
winners and all those who took part.
“Regular reading is such an important part of a child’s
development, so we’re very proud to support a local
challenge that’s helping the next generation get excited

Winners in the Creative category were also awarded
prizes for their bookmark designs at the awards event,
held at Aberdeenshire Council’s headquarters last
week. Four winners were selected from over 100
entries submitted over the summer holidays.

was successful in the P1 to P4 category with an entry
which depicted his dinosaur themed bookmark; 10-
year-old Bonnie (Cairnbulg Library) took the honours
in the P5 to P7 category with her science themed
bookmark; and the fourth winning entry was from 12-
year-old Isla (Inverurie Library) with a quote “Books
fall open and you fall in”.
The awards event also featured an author talk by David
MacPhail, who writes funny books and historical
fiction for children. David’s Thorfinn the Nicest
Viking series has been particularly successful.

DISCLOSURE SCHEME
Almost 1,000 people have been told about
their partner’s abusive past in the last year
alone as increasing numbers make
requests through the Disclosure Scheme
for Domestic Abuse in Scotland.
Between October 1, 2018 and September
30, 2019, a total of 924 disclosures were
made under the scheme, which was
introduced by Police Scotland four years
ago.
The number of requests has increased
year-on-year and in the past year alone,
the number of requests rose by 59 per cent
to 2,177. This takes into account applications
under both the Right to Ask, received
from individuals, and the Power to
Tell, where Police Scotland decides to
make a disclosure to safeguard a person.
Overall, since the scheme was launched in
2015, a total of 5,700 requests have been
received and 2,760 disclosures have been
made. Police Scotland has worked
extensively to raise the profile of the
scheme among officers and this has led to
a 71 per cent rise in applications made
under the Power to Tell.
Detective Superintendent Gordon
McCreadie, Police Scotland’s national
lead for domestic abuse said: “Domestic
abuse is unacceptable and it is vital that
we collectively use every tool at our disposal
to prevent abuse from happening in
the first place.
“Anyone who is concerned about their
partner’s past, or who thinks their friend
or colleague may be subject to domestic
abuse, can make an application under the
scheme. Where a risk is identified, a
disclosure will be made to the person at
risk of abuse, enabling them to make an
informed choice about continuing the
relationship or making themselves safe.
“We do not tolerate domestic abuse. We
investigate fully all reports received and
perpetrators should expect to face the full
consequences of their abusive behaviour."

Sir, Cats are much-loved pets, yet
many of your readers may be
surprised to learn that they do not
have the same level of protection
as dogs when it comes to microchipping.
While microchipping is
compulsory for dogs, there are no
such laws for cats, and this means
many lost or injured cats are not
able to be reunited with their
owners. Being independent and
curious, cats are more likely than
dogs to roam and get lost far from
home.
Cats Protection has launched a
petition calling on the government
to bring in laws to ensure that all
owned cats across the UK are
microchipped. Microchipping is a
safe and permanent method of
identification, unlike collars
which are prone to coming off.
By ensuring all owned cats are
microchipped, owners will have
the peace of mind of knowing
their cat has the best chance of
being returned home should they
become lost. In the sad event a cat
has been killed on the roads, the
details on their microchip can also
ensure their owner can be informed.

Welfare Manifesto, stating its

microchipping for cats, and the
Government’s Animal Welfare
