Ever wondered what
mediumship is all about?
Colin tells all....
Mediumship
Revealed
TALKING WITH THE DEAD ISN’T A JOB FOR
JUST ANYBODY. COLIN FLAHERTY EXPLAINS
WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A MEDIUM.
The term medium refers to a
person with an ability to produce
phenomena of a mental
or physical nature by channeling
or communicating
with a spiritual entity. Mediumship
involves cooperative
communication between a
human and one or more discarnate,
spirit personalities.
Although there are other
forms of mediumship such as
trance and physical, mental
mediumship is the most commonly
demonstrated. Mental
mediumship is communication
from a spirit that takes
place within the medium’s
consciousness, without the
use of the five physical senses.
Because mental mediumship
often occurs through
telepathy, it is sometimes
called telepathic mediumship.
Once a medium receives
a message, s/he then relates
what s/he sees, hears or feels
to the recipient or sitter. The
medium may use various
states of trance to obtain this
information.
Mental mediumship comes
in three main forms: clairvoyance,
clairaudience and
clairsentience.
Clairvoyance or clear seeing is
the ability to see objects, animals
or people that are not
physically present. This sight
usually occurs in the mind’s
eye, and some mediums say
that this is their normal vision
state. Others say they must
train their minds with practices
like meditation in order
6 – RUNNING TITLE
to achieve this ability and that assistance
from spiritual helpers is often necessary.
While some clairvoyant mediums say
they can see a spirit as though the spirit
had a physical body and is physically
present, others say that spirits appear as
movies, television programmes or photographs
in their minds.
The term clairvoyance, when used in a
mediumistic sense, is often used to refer
to seeing spirits and visions instilled by
spirits or, more colloquially, to refer to fortune
telling. These definitions are different
from the official one used by parapsychologists.
They define clairvoyance as,
“paranormal acquisition of information
concerning an object or contemporary
physical event that derives directly from
an external physical source and not from
the mind of another person.”
Clairaudience or clear hearing is referred
to as the ability to hear spirit voices that
are not audible to other people. In some
cases, mediums say they hear the spirits’
voices as though people are sitting next
to them. Others claim they hear spirit
voices within their heads/minds as more
of thoughts or verbalisations of thoughts.
In both cases, the voices are inaudible
to others, even if they are seated near
the medium. The medium may also hear
music or singing in addition to spoken
thought.
Clairsentience, or clear feeling is said to
be the most commonly experienced form
of mental mediumship. Clairsentience is
the ability to sense the physical attributes
of a spirit presence. The medium may feel
the presence of a spirit through touch,
smell, temperature change or a slight
breeze. Some mediums say that they will
feel the ailments the spirits had while
they were alive. Clairsentient mediums
can also sense what information is being
given to them by the spirit as well as the personality
and build of the communicator when
they were in their physical bodies.
In my own mediumship, I use as many faculties
as is possible to grab information from any
source I can. I listen to my mind, but I also take
note of my feelings. I listen to the words that
come out of my mouth. I watch the gestures
or mannerisms I make. I pay attention to the
things that are around me in the room and
see what I may be drawn to. I pay attention to
see if my physical body feels different in any
way. All this, accompanied with the psychic
element and the mental mediumship aspect,
makes it easier for me to receive more information
on many levels.
Another thing that supports me is that I’m
a trance medium, spirits draw closer to me
and can present me with more feelings, their
physical attributes, etc. In addition, if they
come even closer, they can make the information
I give purer and less contaminated by my
own mind.
All mediums understand that it’s our own
minds that interfere with the messages. It’s
our minds that need to be trained. We need to
learn to relax our thoughts, open our mouths
and immediately communicate what we
receive before our minds start to destroy the
content.
I prefer trance mediumship because in my
opinion, the more passive state of mind the
medium must retain is less interfering and allows
the spirits to give themselves more to the
message, keeping it purer and less tainted.
If you wish to be the best medium you can be,
remember to use all the aspects and faculties
that are available to you. It’s all there. Why not
use it and make it easier for you and the spirit
to deliver that which is needed?
Crystals For
Autumn
Discover the crystals you
need this autumn
October is the time when the
nights are drawing in and the
weather is decidedly autumnal.
We start tuning into colours
such as rich reds, olive
greens, warming oranges and
yellows, and of course, earthy
browns and blacks.
It’s also the time for those
born under the signs of Libra
and Scorpio. And of course,
the pagan sabbat holiday of
Samhain, or Halloween as
it has become more widely
known, comes at the end of
the month.
So, what does this mean in
terms of crystals? Well, let’s
look at those crystals which
have the same colour that
the season reminds us of. For
example, red jasper, bloodstone,
yellow jasper, moss
agate and carnelian all have
those rich autumnal colours,
as do iron pyrite, petrified
wood and mahogany obsidian.
The other thing they all
have in common is that they
are all grounding crystals,
although some are more
grounding than others.
And for those of you unfamiliar
with the term, just
what exactly does grounding
mean, what does it imply?
Well, the short answer is that
to be grounded means to be
fully present within the physical
body and the mind. For
those of you who meditate
and connect with the light,
it’s wonderful to know that
the deeper we can ground
ourselves the higher we are
able to reach spiritually.
So back to the crystals. Red
jasper, bloodstone and yellow
jasper are all jaspers, which
in turn are part of the greater
quartz family. The yellow jasper
is a lighter grounder than
red jasper and bloodstone
and loosely relates to the
solar plexus chakra. There’s
not much to choose between
red jasper and bloodstone as
far as which one has deeper
grounding abilities, but I
feel that bloodstone has the
edge. Both relate to the base
chakra. As an aside, green is
the complementary colour
to red, which is the colour of
the base chakra, so it makes
10 – MYSTIC REBEL MAGAZINE - AUTUMN 2019

sense that bloodstone relates
to this chakra also.
Moss agate and carnelian
are both agates, again, part
of the greater quartz family.
Moss agate is a beautiful
crystal, often clear with small
moss-like structures within
it. This is a light grounding
crystal. However, with carnelian,
there can be a range
of colours from a deep red
orange, which can relate
to the base chakra and be
quite grounding, through to
more peachy tones, which
are more aligned with the
sacral chakra and even the
solar plexus. I have a beautiful
sphere which has smatterings
of carnelian within
snowy quartz, which makes
it quite clearing.
When starting out doing
crystal healing, many students
love to use petrified
wood as grounders. There
are so many variations
within the different pieces,
and no two are the same. It’s
a very user-friendly crystal.
Iron pyrite and mahogany
obsidian are deeper grounders.
Iron pyrite is a dull gold
colour and has been referred
to as fool’s gold. The founding
and growth of America’s
Jamestown had much to do
with activities following the
mining of iron pyrite and
it attempts to raise funding
for further expeditions.
Mahogany obsidian is part of
the obsidian family and has
rich brown mixed within the
usual black of obsidian. It is
usually used as a grounding
crystal. It is strengthening
and deepens your connection
with the earth. Some
people find it to be protective
also.
Let’s now look at crystals
that can relate to Libra and
Scorpio. Now to be clear, I’m
no astrologer. What I have to
say here is purely how I feel
the following crystals relate
to the star signs of October.
But first, the recognised
birthstone for October is
opal. I remember being told
as a child that opal brought
tears but had no idea why. I
don’t recall any adults being
able to give me the answer
either, although I may simply
not have asked the question.
However, I certainly know
why now. Around 20 years
ago, I decided to have a belly
button piercing, and I wore
a bar set with an opal for
some time. I went on holiday
and baked in the sun for two
weeks and was upset when
part of my lovely opal broke
off. Tears! It was only when
doing the crystal healing
course that I discovered
that opals contain water
and clearly if they dry out,
they can crack. It was a very
tough lesson for me.
Libra is all about balance,
finding that midpoint.
Neither one thing nor the
other. If we take this idea to
the colour spectrum and the
chakra system, green is in
the middle of the spectrum
AUTUMN 2019 – MYSTIC REBEL MAGAZINE – 11

and green is the heart chakra colour that sits
in the centre of that system. Aventurine comes
in a variety of shades of green, from lighter
greens to deeper greens. It has a soft and
calming energy, brilliant for stress and finding
that middle ground so that we can continue
without the stresses of the ups and downs of
life.
Those born under the sign of Scorpio are passionate
and usually intense people. The other
important thing about the sign is transformation.
Scorpios can start out life as scorpions
but through transformation, they can turn
themselves into eagles, the higher form of the
sign. Also, as a friend reminded me yesterday,
in tarot terms, Scorpio relates to the death
card, a card of transformation. What better
crystal to relate to transformation than obsidian,
the black or sheen variety, even the rainbow
version? This crystal is a known grounder,
as we have explored earlier. However, this is
also the perfect crystal for bringing something
very deep out into the light to be transformed
into something new and vibrant.
Do you see how this works? Everything,
although seemingly separate, is interlinked.
F or my friend and trusted companion
Eleven years,
Not a walk in the park,
At times so very, very dark.
You never gave up and you took your time,
Your faith in me allowed me to shine.
My castles walls were so very high,
I’m sure that they toughed the sky.
Acceptance and kindness,
Friendship and grace,
Gifts I truly value,
That I couldn’t say face to face.
Through the laughter and pain,
I’ll never be the same.
Like the butterfly I have flown,
Just glad I wasn’t on my own.
So stubborn and strong,
It took a while,
But you were always there with a loving smile.
Taking a risk,
I let you in for a peek,
So glad you didn’t leave after a week.
Driven, pushing and punishing,
That was me!
The light is strong now,
So now that I see;
It’s time to let my little girl be free.
My world was so private, you see.
For a long time it was only
Me.
~ Jacqueline Lewins ~

What are your views on
reincarnation?
C.F. I absolutely believe in reincarnation,
many lifetimes until you
choose that enough is enough. Life
for me personally is all about the
journey and the experiences. I want
and desire so many experiences
that one lifetime would simply not
be enough. We are universally unlimited
in the life options available
to us. I desire them all.
Do you feel that our spouse
in spirit gets upset when we
are going through a traumatic
experience or when
we feel upset or emotional?
C.F. I believe when spirits move
on from this life that they see
through eyes that are so very different
from our physical ones. The way
we view life and the perspective
from which we see it are so vastly
different.
Of course, I believe that family
members and others that were connected
to us through love vibrations
still feel great love towards us and
watch over us at times. I believe
they are drawn to us in those moments
when they are needed most.
I don’t think they feel upset in the
same way as we physical beings
do because they understand from
a clearer perspective what the
physical journey is all about. They
have emotions and understanding
of how tough it is on the physical
plane because of the life that they
lived, but they understand the journey
much more now.
Knowing how hard it is for you, they
draw themselves close, feel for you
in your situation and do what they
can. However, I think upset might
be the wrong terminology.
How does a child, who is
nonverbal, communicate
once they have passed?
C.F. Once souls have passed
from this world to the next, all the
physical limitations that they had
to contend with in the physical life
are removed. They are now spirit,
so they communicate in the way
all spiritual beings do. This can be
through thoughts and phrases delivered
to a mind, through feelings
or in a more physical way such as
delivering a touching sensation or
physically moving objects.
I’m always curious to know
if mediums have spirits
around them all the time
and how that impacts on
everyday life
C.F. I can only answer this
question from my own experience.
When I am not working on
the platform doing a mediumship
demonstration or giving a face to
face private reading, I switch myself
off to the influence of spirits in a
conscious manner and go about my
daily life in a very human way.
I separate my professional and
private life very clearly. I have
my physical life to live and to be
constantly open to the spirit world
would be a very draining exercise
indeed. However, that is not to say
that if a spirit had a need to impress
me in some way or a desire to let
me know it is there for the benefit
of myself or another that it couldn’t
do so.
Because I make my boundaries
clear to the spirits and they understand
how my spiritual and physical
selves co-exist, I don’t believe they
would disturb my private life unless
there was a great need. The spirits
and I have great respect for one
another.
CRYSTAL COCKERHAM
SHARES HOW TO WALK
THE PRIESTESS PATH THIS
AUTHUMN
Connection & Balance
On The Priestess Path
Autumn is definitely here. The colors are
changing, the leaves are beginning to drop,
the night air is refreshingly chilly, and the
apples are in season!
If you are like me and the frigid wintry temperatures
aren’t your cup of tea, then now is
the time to get out and about in nature and
enjoy those last bits of pleasant weather.
Connecting with nature is an innate need
that we as humans really must have for our
health and wholeness of mind, body & spirit.
If you find yourself seeking for, newly arrived
on or traveling the Priestess Path, then syncing
with the cycles of the season as well as
connecting with nature and the elements is
definitely something to get to know and feel
intimately with every aspect of your being.
Just in case you don’t live in the middle of
the woods, you can connect with nature by
visiting a nearby park, garden or beach and:
• Stand barefoot in the grass or on the
shore of a beach and engage your senses.
• Sit amongst the beauty of nature and
appreciate it - get comfy under a tree, or
find a patch of earth and have a picnic.
• Garden - if you have your own, getting
your fingers in the dirt is a great way to
connect with gloves or not.
While you are connecting with nature around
you, allow it to help you connect within by:
• Thinking about what all the trees have
witnessed in their lifetime. Truly the
thought of the secrets they keep is
incredulous!
AUTUMN 2019 – MYSTIC REBEL MAGAZINE – 15

• Reflecting on all that has transpired over
the past season(s). What has happened
in your life? What has caught you offguard?
What has happened that you
planned for?
• Taking a compassionate inventory of
what you have going on in your life.
Deciding on what needs to be cleared
and what needs to be nurtured are just
the beginnings of what a good walk
with just yourself can offer.
Observing life and being in awe of the
relationship that everything has with everything
else is BEing present and connecting
with nature. Connecting with the nature we
are surrounded by affords us an opening to
connect with our inner nature.
Cycling with the seasons helps us to stay
connected with our inner nature. Autumn
(and spring) equinoxes are about balance
as they signify days of equal light and
darkness. So, while you are out and about
connecting with nature around you and
within you, take the above suggestions a
step further:
Are you living a balanced life?
• Are you eating healthy and balanced
meals?
• Are you getting enough physical
exercise?
• Are you getting enough sleep?
• Do you have downtime to replenish and
recharge?
• Are you working too much to your own
detriment and that of those you love?
• How are your relationships? Fulfilling or
lacking authentic connections?
• Do you have creative outlets?
CONNECTING WITH
NATURE IS AN INNATE
NEED THAT WE AS HU-
MANS REALLY MUST
HAVE FOR OUR HEALTH
AND WHOLENESS OF
MIND, BODY & SPIRIT.
If you aren’t living a balanced life, what things
can you do and what things can you let go of
in order to live life more balanced and connected?
The suggestions and reflections here are
merely the beginning to help you find and
remain on your path and to live a connected &
balanced life.
Just like that closet that is bursting at the
seams and needs to be cleaned out and decluttered
so too does your energy field and
those ‘files’ floating around endlessly in your
mind. Connecting with nature and cycling
with the seasons allows the space to open for
you to connect and balance.
Do yourself and your Inner Priestess a huge
service and do something to connect with
nature both in the outer world and the nature
of your inner world. You’ll thank yourself for it!
And you never know, it may be time to shed
your colours so you can don a new colour
palette of your very own.
Autumn tarotscopes with
Kate May
18 – MYSTIC REBEL MAGAZINE - AUTUMN 2019

Aries
This autumn is all about
choices aso, be careful what
you wish for! You may have
shiny object syndrome, where
you keep finding the next
big thing but fail to see any
of those new opportunities
through to the end. When
you are constantly in the idea
phase, you miss the chance to
bring your designs into fruition.
Now is a time to focus on
that one thing that will move
you closer to your goal. Resist
the temptation to get sidetracked
with other ideas. Note
your ideas as they come up
but stay focused on the one
thing you’re currently doing.
As the autumn leaves start to
fall, think carefully about what
you want to leave behind.
Weigh up all the options. It’s
up to you to make sure that
the option you select is in
alignment with your purpose
and your highest good, even if
you feel somewhat paralysed
by the options available to
you.
Taurus
As you enter the autumn
months, your influence is all
about new ventures, new
beginnings, feeling free to
do your own thing, enjoying
family pleasures, being
childlike, enjoying time with
children and doing anything
creative. Feeling more positive
than usual, your energy is set
to soar. Start the new season
as you want to go on, be your
fun-loving self, turn your back
on the darker days of the past
and shine your bright sunny
light.
Adventures and holidays are
in the pipeline with the emphasis
on fun. You have all the
qualities to be a great person
and should feel much more
complete in knowing your
future lies with you being true
to yourself.
Make amends with any
wrongs from the past so that
everyone can enjoy your vibrant
energy right through till
the winter.
Gemini
As you move from summer to
the autumn, be prepared for
an awakening moment. As the
penny drops, clarification will
come clearly through an ah ha
moment followed by release
and renewed energy.
You may have been waiting
for a message and you’ll finally
receive it, allowing you to
move forward in a new direction.
From this month on, you can
go forth with a better understanding
of a situation that
may have been challenging.
There is great release and
a feeling of being able to
see the bigger picture as
you move into the next few
months. If you have been
feeling closed off and unalive,
that is all about to change!
AUTUMN 2019 – MYSTIC REBEL MAGAZINE – 19

Cancer
Partnerships and a coming
together of like minds see you
in a happier, peaceful place
over the next few months. A
powerful relationship has the
potential to become more this
autumn, which brings better
connection and important
messages.
The inflow of abundance is
yours for the taking. Important
documents or contacts
may also pop up.
Business ventures with others
look promising and have a
positive vibe. However, clear
direct communication is vital.
If something feels unconnected,
speak out and get clarity
so you feel more in the know.
Financial gain could influence
deals.
Leo
After a bustling period, the
universe is asking you to chill
out a bit more and take a
well-earned rest for the next
few months. You have tried
your best for a while now.
Although you can keep on trying,
it would be smarter and
healthier for you to sit back for
a while.
Things are going well. I am not
suggesting that you should
be lazy. Stay motivated with
ideas but take a small step
back so you can return fully
charged.
Enjoy your time of rest with
family and close friends without
taking on any unnecessary
pressures.
Now is not the time to worry
about your latest concerns.
Try and put things to one side
while you regroup and rethink
your path.
Virgo
This autumn you are called to
step up. Where you may have
been bent back or felt slightly
out of control in the last couple
of months, now you can
take a much more leadership
role. You should feel excited
and a lot more assertive with
new plans that can come to
fruition with a leadership approach.
Expect the influence of important
people, especially those
that share your enthusiasm
and have a strong mind to
get things moving. Trust your
intuition too as above all, that
is in your favour now. Your
strength and determination
plus some fire in your belly
will get you where you want
to be.
Libra
This season sees you coming
to the end of a difficult time
(mentally, physically and emotionally).
You may be feeling
like giving up or as if others
have let you down. Know that
you are approaching the light
at the end of the tunnel.
Mental stresses are at the
forefront and karmic change
is unavoidable but from these,
you will grow.
Strive to shed any belief
systems that are holding you
back. Although it is easier said
than done, a door needs closing.
Once you finally close a
chapter, you will begin to heal.
The seasonal changing of the
colours is a great reminder of
how you can bring in a new
chapter by letting go and
releasing.
Scorpio
You may be worrying excessively
about a situation and
allowing negative thoughts to
get the better of you, leaving
you stressed and anxious.
Over worrying may lead to
troubled sleep and depressive
thoughts might hit you harder
than usual. Be aware that
you may be adding to your
worries. Just as energy and
thought attracts one another,
what may have started off as
a little niggle can be built up
into something huge over
time if our thoughts and fears
allow.
This season, the message is
to ask for help and support
rather than to over worry. By
taking a deep breath and realising
that life is not as dreadful
as it seems and that the more
you worry the more harm you
are doing to yourself, you can
release your anxiety.
Sagittarius
The energy for you now is
about illusions, delusions and
mystical things. You may feel
there’s something going on,
but you can’t seem to put your
finger on it. Trust your intuition
these coming months
and know that you’re correct.
Whatever it is could be a
subtle change or something
big yet to unfold.
Over the next two months,
beware of illusion and deception.
These could play out in
misunderstandings on your
part or truths you cannot admit
to yourself.
Be careful of making fast decisions
because you may later
realise that you only had half
the information you needed.
You will need to listen to and
trust your intuition so you can
see beyond what is in front of
you.
AUTUMN 2019 – MYSTIC REBEL MAGAZINE – 21

Capricorn
You may feel everything is
happening quickly and that
life is a little up in the air right
now. However, it is a forward
moving time. Make the most
of this to manifest your goals
and dreams. Allow the energy
of the universe to flow
through you and propel you
closer to your goal. Trying to
slow things down because
you’re not ready or you’re fearful
about the unknown will
just waste this opportunity.
Use the energy to fuel positive
change and produce
significant results instead. You
need to be laser-focused with
your intentions and actions.
Determine what you want to
manifest and then align all
your resources and energy to
focus on that singular goal.
Remove distractions and
devote yourself to a task with
total concentration, determination
and will. This will allow
you to accomplish a lot in a
short time.
Aquarius
You may feel like you are
hanging around and swinging
back and forth with choices.
There is a strong indication
that you will have to look at
things from different perspectives
and consider what the
bigger picture holds. Continue
to hang around for the best
results.
You can choose to pause
voluntarily or involuntarily. If
you’re in tune with your intuition,
you’ll have a sense that
it’s time to hit the brakes and
put things on hold. However,
if you’re out of balance and
oblivious to intuitive signs, the
universe will be forced to put
things on hold for you by laying
down continued obstacles
and other blocks.
Your projects and activities
may be coming to an unexpected
and abrupt halt.
Something new is emerging,
but you won’t be able to see it
unless you allow the time and
space for it to come through.
Pisces
There is a whole new world
waiting for you to take it! The
time has now come for new
chapters and bigger, better
things. Movement is indicated.
This may be regarding travel,
new homes, new jobs or just a
new way of being.
Along with this new chapter
comes new opportunities. You
may need to see the cup half
full rather than half empty.
Look on the positive side of
what the new chapter can
bring in for you. The completion
of a cycle is happening
now, use it to your best advantage.
Things will come into alignment,
allowing balance and
harmony. It will be up to you
to make it work in your favour,
but you have everything in
place ready.
Fiction by Jackie Frazier
Gingerbread Kisses
During the magickal season of winter, as glittering,
silvery flakes of snow slowly fell from
the heavens, their earthly journey guided by
the pale light of a full, silvery moon and the
mystical glow of twinkling stars, a new life was
preparing to leave the warm, soft comfort of
angel wings that had cradled him since time
began.
A pre-determined course of events “destiny”
was preparing to be set into motion.
Nestled in a soft, feathery cocoon, many centuries
had passed while the boy had patiently
waited for the perfect moment…this moment,
his moment. A moment that he had chosen all
those years before. A moment full of wonder,
promise and magick.
Many, many years had passed, and the angel
had hoped that this moment would never
come. Now it had. How could she unfold her
wings? How could she let him go?
How could she not?
Over the years, the angel had told the boy millions
of stories. Some stories he would remember,
other stories he would not.
Would he remember her? Would he remember
how much she loved him?
Before goodbyes were said between the angel
and the boy, the angel told him one last story
as they feasted on honey-milk and gingerbread
cakes. It was a new story that he had
never heard before. He listened intently. It was
his story and he did not want to miss anything.
The boy settled into the downy softness of the
angel’s wings as she began the story. The story
told the why and the how of how he had chosen
this time, this moment. It told about the
people he had chosen to love him and to be
his earthly family. Tales of the goodness and
happiness that the world would experience
from his arrival made him smile.
The angel stretched the story out as long as
she could. As the story was nearing its end, a
tear slipped from the corner of the angel’s eye
and landed in the palm of the boy’s left hand.
Drinking the last drop of honey-milk and
swallowing the last crumb of gingerbread
cake, the angel kissed the boy’s left palm and
opened her wings wide. For the angel it was a
sad time but a joyous time as the boy stepped
forward leaving the angels soft, feathery
wings. The boy did not cry. He did
not look back. The full, silvery
moon guided his path. The boy
swirled amongst the glittering,
silvery flakes of snow
as he rode a shooting star
toward his new life.
The life he had chosen.
Soon, he was cocooned FEASTED ON HONEYonce
again, not by his angel’s
wings but by the soft,
MILK AND GINGERBREAD
CAKES.
warm arms of the mother he
had chosen all those years ago.
No longer was he surround by his
angel and the heavens. Circled around him
with wet glistening tears of happiness upon
their faces, were his father, his grandparents
and numerous other family members, all of
whom he had chosen. All rejoicing happily at
his arrival.
Soon all was quiet, the boy and his mother
were left to themselves. He gazed into her
dark brown eyes and she into his dark green
ones. Her brown eyes saw the magick he was
made of. A curl of soft, downy red hair, deep
dark green eyes, dimpled cheeks, ten fingers,
ten toes, a tiny pink cupid’s mouth and a tiny,
white tear shaped mark upon his left palm
stole his mother’s heart and soul.
BEFORE
GOODBYES WERE
SAID BETWEEN THE AN-
GEL AND THE BOY, THE
ANGEL TOLD HIM ONE
LAST STORY AS THEY
synced and became one. She knew, he knew,
that their love for one another would be
unique, special and full of magick.
As she twirled the soft, red curl
around her finger, a tiny white
feather floated out and
landed upon the bed. She
knew in that moment that
the boy, her baby, her son
that slept in her arms had
slept with an angel.
She knew that this tiny
bundle of love would gift
her with sweet, gingerbread
kisses forever.
As his mother lowered her face to his, she
was surprised to catch the slightest hint of
honey-milk and gingerbread upon his breath.
His crystal blue eyes gazed at her intently. In
that moment, each saw the love that bonded
them. The love that each had patiently waited
for.
Their love for each other shone brighter than
the moon and stars combined. He felt her
heartbeat and she felt his. Their heartbeats
My Spiritual
Life
Jackie White
JACKIE SHARES HER ‘LUCKY’ BREAKS ON HER
SPIRITUAL PATH AND HOW IT LEAD HER TO RUN
INSPIRATIONS POSITIVE LIVING GROUP.
I would say that my waking
up to understanding life more
started in 1997 when I broke
my leg. I was coming down
the stairs and on the last step,
I twisted my ankle and broke
both the tibia and the fibia of
my right leg.
For most of the next year, my
wonderful mum looked after
me as did the boys, who were
five and three at the time,
because I broke the same leg
again the following May.
At the time, I would have said
that it was the worst year of
my life. Now, I can look back
and say it was the best year
really. In that year, I started to
watch Oprah Winfrey every
day and she had the most
incredible guests on. The first
one I watched was Dr Wayne
Dyer.
AUTUMN 2019 – MYSTIC REBEL MAGAZINE – 25

It just went on from there, every day watching all these different inspirational and
motivational speakers. After listening to them, I would buy all their inspirational
books and really feel happy within myself. I generally thought my life was pretty
good.
Then, in January 2010, I was ironing and watching an old Oprah Winfrey show with
Robert Holden as guest speaker. I had never heard of him, but he was so English and
got my attention. He was asking the audience five questions about their lives and
they could score up to seven points with each answer, a possible 35 points if their
lives were amazing.
As I say, I thought I was honestly on the right path and quite happy at that time. However,
when I answered the questions, I only scored 17, which really shocked me.
I looked up Robert Holden and found he had a Coaching Happiness course starting in
June of that year on my birthday. I booked up to go and later spent the most wonderful
week with 64 people from all over the world.
When I came back, I could call myself a qualified happiness coach. However, it was
still another 18 months before I put what I learned to use.
I went to a day workshop where I heard about hypnotherapy in the morning and NLP
in the afternoon. The NLP speaker pointed out that so many people train in a multitude
of modalities and usually do nothing with all their training.
The next day, I booked a room in a local hall for six weeks to run my first happiness
course.
On that course, one of the ladies decided she was going to start a positive living
group. Four weeks into it, she asked me if I would like to take it over, as she was going
through a personal crisis.
I knew running the group was for me and took it over in April 2013. I have been running
it weekly ever since.
We have a different speaker each week and I absolutely love listening to the different
talks and subjects.
I feel I’ve gained so much, and I have also run a few happiness courses in-between.
Last year, I qualified as a Ho’oponopono practitioner and I have run a few
Ho’oponopono courses this year.
I look forward to seeing what the next 10 years will bring.
purely than within the form
of the female and all she
holds.
The connection to the essence
and spark of life, the
alchemist who transverses
the soul into a human form.
The birth giver of life and
creation. The holy grail that
has been sought throughout
history dwells within every
woman. She holds the spark
of life and the original source
of all magic, wild and untamed
in her being and soul.
Conditioned into a sense of
self-doubt over time and generational
conditioning, she
has cast uncertainty on her
ability and denied the self of
her true magical essence that
she harnesses within.
We have to take the female
energy back to her creation,
through the mother wound
and the matriarchal lineage
that has bound her power
and abilities. We have to learn
to embrace the Feminine
Divine within each and every
soul that walks this earth in
female form.
She holds the chalice of life
within her womb space, the
divine spark of all magic and
power. Yet she fears it also,
she is dubious of her own
energy and places her belief
instead in others and those
who hold voice to claiming
their power. It casts shadows
and dilutes that which is in
her natural being.
Her magic has become small
in its context, anxious to its
power, nervous of its connection.
It’s been conditioned
out of her over years of
mastery of a patriarchal dominion.
It has left the female
doubting her own ability,
questioning the integrity of
other women around her.
Suspicious of those who have
held power and how they
embrace it,she has lost the
relationship with the self and
the energy she harnesses.
Instead of holding competition
and comparing herself
to others, feeling inferior to
those she deems more empowered.
Or, being branded
too full of ego if she carries
her own empowerment to all
she believes. Being cast out
as mad for following her intuition
and in the past, hunted
for her gifts, ridiculed for her
knowledge and pillaged for
her power.
The time of the Divine Feminine
is returning. The male
pathway is opening up to
her energy once more. The
female is awakening to all she
is. Slowly, she is embracing
her own embodiment, understanding
she is more than
blood and bone. Realising the
innate power she wields as a
divine soul. The chalice and
the vessel of all magic upon
this earth held in delicate balance
within her womb space.
The Great Mother is speaking
through her voice, listening
with her ears and seeing
through her vision. Her gifts
are returning, the intuitive is
awakening, and the soul is
dancing in recognition of her
waking. The Seer, the Oracle
is holding space upon this
earth once more, through
the divinity of the female, the
Womb – man. The balance of
perfect equilibrium, birthing
back upon our planet at this
time.
The embracing of ‘She’ in
all her aspects. The Divine
Goddess in the shape of
the human form. Her magic
within her blood, coursing
through every cell of her
acceptance of self. Embracing
the knowledge she seeks
is already within, handed
down through generation to
generation, just dormant and
waiting for the time to stir.
It’s within this generation,
this time in millennia that the
Divine Feminine is returning,
though our children,
our siblings, our society and
the self. No longer is ‘She’
repressed into silence, her
magic clipped into secret
societies. Her mystery no
longer shrouded into secret
knowledge and gatherings.
The Divine Feminine is awakening,
she is you, and she is
me. We are remembering the
time of before, of when she
roamed this world wild and
free, when she was sought for
her wisdom and healing, her
insight and knowledge, when
she wielded the elements
to create enchantment and
casting.
Her voice is growing, her
strength recovering and her
movement freeing. She is
tribeswomen, of ancient form
and culture who are recalling
their power through word, song, art, being and doing. Becoming a part of the cycle of the nature
of the earth. Calling more and more to those who hear the whisper upon the winds. To remember,
to feel and to become and to return to the Sisterhood.
To honour the sacred space within, of its hallowed origin of the initial spark of existence that was
formed and placed within every woman’s womb and physical being at the time of creation. Of
her ability to transfer energy from spirit to human form and carry that energy until it is birthed
and gifted to the earth.
It’s time for every woman to embrace her Divine Feminine and the magic she holds in its rawness.
In her natural ability that she harnesses, of the mystical essence that is born of her being,
her connection to Source and of all life. All dwells deeply within her. We just need to embrace,
accept and become.
Start your days right this
autumn with homemade
orange & raisin granola
Orange & Raisin
Granola
NUTRITIONAL THERAPIST JO JO ELIZABETH SHARES A TASTY, HEALTHY
RECIPE FOR THOSE CHILLY AUTUMN MORNINGS
I don’t know if you are big granola
fans like we are in our household?
But I’d like to introduce you to one
of my favourite granola recipes. If
you love granola and you are partial
to a hint of orange, you are going
to love this. It’s just so perfectly
crunchy, nutty, delicious and full of
goodness!
I always make homemade granola
these days. Not only is it so super
simple to make and doesn’t take too
much time and effort but it really is
so much tastier and healthier than
the shop bought ones. Often, they
are loaded with refined sugars, oils
and other unnecessary nasties!
The best thing about making your
own granola is that you can play
around with the ingredients to add
variety. If you don’t like some of my
choices, you can try using different
spices (like nutmeg or ginger), or
different seeds, nuts and dried fruit
to the ones I have used here in this
recipe.
I also like to add raw honey or
blackstrap molasses as an alternative
to maple syrup or other fruit
juices like pineapple to sweeten it.
Sometimes, I like to mix it up with
different grains too. I love experimenting
and making new recipes,
it can become quite an obsession!
Another bonus with homemade
granola is that it will keep for about
two weeks in a Kilner jar or other
airtight container, if you can make it
last that long that is!
This granola is just perfect for
breakfast or a snack. Oats are a
brilliant source of complex carbohydrates
and insoluble fibre (called
beta glucans) which can slow down
the conversion of sugar in the body
and maintain blood sugar levels;
help make you feel fuller for longer;
give a sustained energy release
for longer; and additionally, can
help lower cholesterol! Oats are
also high in protein as well as other
important antioxidants, minerals
and vitamins.
Coconut, nuts and seeds too are
packed with protein, fibre, good fats
and other essential nutrients, making
granola a healthy choice.
If you need a solution for a quick
breakfast to go, then why not pop
your granola into a jar, top it with
some natural bio yoghurt and some
berries or grated apple or carrot
and take it with you for a healthy
start to your day!
• 2 tsp vanilla paste / extract
• 100g raisins
• 2 handfuls desiccated coconut /
coconut flakes
Method
1) Preheat oven to 140 °C (fan setting)
2) Line 2 baking trays with baking
parchment.
3) Place dry ingredients - oats, seeds,
nuts and orange zest- in a mixing bowl.
4) Gently heat the coconut oil in a pan
along with the maple syrup, vanilla
paste/extract, orange juice and cinnamon
until the coconut oil has melted.
5) Pour the mixture into the bowl, stirring
all the ingredients together to coat
the dry ingredients.
6) Spread the granola mixture evenly
onto the baking trays and bake for
about 40-45 minutes until golden
brown, stirring every so often to ensure
it is evenly cooked. Halfway through the
cooking time you will need to add in the
coconut.
7) Remove from oven and leave to cool.
Once cooled you can return it to the
bowl and add in the dried fruit.
8) Transfer to an airtight container.
My Spiritual
Life
Julie Weltch
A VIVID MEMORY FROM CHILDHOOD INFLU-
ENCED JULIE’S SPIRITUAL PATH AND LED HER
ON THE PATH OF A WITCH
It was summer, the year
somewhere between 1977
and 1979 and I was hiding
in my place. This was a hollow
in the hedge that surrounded
someone’s garden
in the alleyway opposite our
house but it might as well
have been on another planet,
no one would find me here
because no one else knew
about it.
As I lay with my cheek
pressed into the cool firm
earth, I watched as a fat hairy
caterpillar inched its way
along a thin branch just a few
inches from my face. It was
beautiful.
Despite the dense green
canopy above me, the sun
was so intense that summer
that I felt its warmth on my
uppermost cheek and my
34 – MYSTIC REBEL MAGAZINE - AUTUMN 2019

attention switched from the fat hairy caterpillar
to the sensation of warmth and cold on my
face – balance.
The sun produced a dappled myriad of shapes
and occasionally a breeze would disturb
the upper branches of my grotto so that the
shapes of light danced around and over me.
I recall this all with such clarity – the sight, the
feel and the smell of mouldering leaves contrasted
by the fresh scent of honeysuckle from
the neighbouring house wall that the breeze
occasionally delivered to me.
The world was far away. I could hear the other
children in the distance, their laughter remote
and ethereal. I was at home here in the dirt, I
was safe.
That is one of the many memories that I have
of my childhood and the journey that lead me
to my craft. Another is of the time the librarian
let me browse the adult section of our tiny local
library and I came upon a book by Doreen
Valiente. Of course, I was not able to take it
home to read because I was too young. However,
I was left alone to read it cover to cover
over the following days. I do not think that I
understood what I was reading, and I can only
guess at the title of the book being Where
Witchcraft Lives because of the timing. However,
I did recall the name of the author when
about ten years later I discovered another
book of hers and bought it. The rest is history.
In the early years of my craft, I did not think
much about the fact that what I was practicing
might be considered witchcraft. I lit candles
anointed with herbal oils dependent upon
my mood or need at the time. When I sewed,
I made sure to stitch with intent and when
I weaved, I spoke charms that popped into
my head. My friends and family would come
to me for advice on ailments and I brewed
tinctures and teas and laid hands upon them.
I could read too, even though I am not a fan
of the tarot and other such methods because
I have a poor memory for the cards. I often
heard what I thought was an inner voice that
would make accurate predictions or connections.
However, I now know that not to be
the case at all. It is a deeper connection with
something bigger and mysterious yet, at the
same, time familiar to me.
When I was 23, I went through a traumatic
time in my personal life and I sought the
advice of a reader (who was so astoundingly
accurate that I would go on to consult with
her for the next ten years). She was the person
who saw something in me and acknowledged
what she termed, “an immense power.” Now,
I do not claim to have immense power, but I
do have a profound connection to my craft,
and I believe absolutely that a power works
through me in all that I do. I am extremely
mindful, dedicated and serious in my crafting
for that reason. This may not make me popular
but that is not what the craft is about for me.
I do not need the approval of others in what
I do. I am confident enough in my practices.
When someone else questions what I do, I can
answer with complete certainty that what I do
it is right for me, no matter what their magical
101 book might say.
I have not always been as confident though.
As a youngster, the craft came naturally but
when I found the Pagan community in my
thirties, I was thrown completely. I had never
experienced people who believed what I did
but, at the same time, were so conflicted to
my way of thinking. I joined an online group of
solitary Wiccans and I learnt a lot but did not
feel that the extravagant rites and (what felt to
me) illogical rules such as ‘harm none’ and the
three-fold law were quite for me. I then joined
a Druid order and made some deep and lasting
friendships that I maintain to this day.
While Druidry felt more real to me, I still felt
something lacking. So, with mutual respect
and love, I left the order.
A turning point for me was discovering the
Fellowship of Isis. I was introduced during my
AUTUMN 2019 – MYSTIC REBEL MAGAZINE – 35

Druidry days by Rev Sarah Rooke and it was
through this organisation that I was offered
knowledge and both spiritual and celebrant
training. The special thing about the FOI is
that they allowed me to continue my own
practices in my own way, never even asking
me to change or alter my belief system. It was
as I worked through their course that I believe
I truly found my connection with my Goddess.
As a Hierophant Priestess in the FOI, I
dedicated to the elder Goddesses Hekate and
Cailleach and although I was still at the mother
stage of my life, I believe there was a reason for
this. Gone is the uncertainty of youth and as
I travel towards crone-hood with these fearsome
forces walking beside me, I truly believe
that my power as a witch is coming into its
own.
With this surety, however, comes a negative.
Because of my confidence in what I do and the
fact that I have learnt to listen to my instincts
and reject external interference, it is difficult
for me to work with other crafters. I have a
small tight circle that I work with intimately,
our bond is over ten-years-old now and we
work like clockwork, always knowing our place
in the circle and what is needed intuitively. We
perform public rituals and provide workshops
but our circle work is always private.
Hearth of the Grey Goddess was formerly
known as the Circle of Spirit, Earth and Elements
and is the training group that I set up as
part of my FOI training. We offer most of our
services free and we do not court publicity.
However, we do use Instagram and Facebook
and we have a website to spread our word
and offer our services because often pagan or
witchcraft services can incur a hefty fee and I
feel that spiritual services should be available
to all.
In conclusion, I am always in service to my
Goddess and I am in love with the earth and
those who share my guardianship of her.
My advice to a new crafter or witch is to read
everything they can lay their hands on, not
just about witchcraft or paganism but about
herbal lore, folk lore, nature, history, myth and
legend. Then, when they have taken in all that
knowledge, they should put it to the side and
look into themselves and listen to their voices
that advise them from within. They should
never pay for witchcraft training, maybe for a
workshop that will provide them with a new
skill but never for witchcraft learning. It is
frowned upon in most craft communities and
they would be much better off buying a book
on a subject that they get to keep and refer to.
A real mentor will not charge for teaching, they
will guide and walk beside them and share
their learning.
Walk in love with the earth, remember the
path that you walk as a witch is a long trodden
one, respect always and make your life a magical
one.
Tarot Q&A with Kate May
When did you realise you
were trusting your intuition
and the messages you were
receiving without hesitation?
K.M. I guess I didn’t really think
about it too much. I just gave what
I got, and it seemed to be correct. A
lot of people use just their intuition
and that’s great, but I found
it easier to use a book at first. I
would literally take a book along
as a reference while I was learning
and practicing, then let my intuition
guide me to the next layers. I trust
the cards chosen are correct. I don’t
doubt that.
Yes, free will does come into readings.
However, I believe the cards
will be correct in their positions but
maybe the situation surrounding
them will change. Asking clients for
feedback when you first start out
is a good way to give you a bit of
confidence and let you know you’re
on the right track.
There is a fine line between allknowing
and knowing within. I
believe when your all-knowing that
it’s probably your ego kicking in
because you want to be right. When
you just know deep inside that
you’re right, it just feels different.
Being a good psychic helps too and
I would recommend sitting in a circle
or sitting for yourself. If in doubt
just keep practicing. I encourage all
my students to practice as much as
they can for the best results.
What’s your favourite tarot
card and why?
K.M. I think it must be The
Empress. The colours used in the
artwork are my favourites, especially
the rich greens on her cloak.
In addition, I love her curvaceous,
feminine look. I’m rather fleshy
myself and I do love a bit of glam.
In the deck I use, The Empress has
red hair, which my mum also has.
My mum is very motherly and nurturing
with us, so there is familiarity
there.
Although my pregnancy days are
well and truly over, I do have a
fertile mind and I’m always coming
up with ways to grow an idea.
I love the abundance of this card,
the hope of new things growing,
the nurturing element of her and of
course, being a mum myself, that
motherhood connection is a strong
connection. She represents growth,
family times, being at one in nature,
health, wellbeing and abundance. I
love and connect well with all these
things. Being a Taurus, The Empress
and I share the Venusian symbol of
love, beauty and harmony.
Have you read for anyone
famous?
K.M. Yes, I’ve read for someone
well known in this country and
several from other countries. There
have been singers, actors and members
from various royal families,
although none from England yet.
Obviously, because all my readings
are confidential, I can’t say who
they were though. Only one caused
me to feel star struck the first time
I read for them, but they have been
back since and then I was cool.
What are your top tips for
beginners?
K.M. Practice! In addition, I encourage
people to read books. That
goes against the grain for some but
that’s what worked for me to gain
deeper understanding. My favourite
books are The Idiots Guide to Tarot
and Around the Tarot in 78 days. I
recommend picking a card at the
end of each day and seeing how the
events of your day match the card.
Talking Tarot with Kate May
The Fool’s
Journey
IN THIS TALKING TAROT CHAPTER, KATE MAY WALKS YOU THROUGH THE
FOOL’S JOURNEY. SHE GUIDES YOU TO UNDERSTAND HOW THE MAJOR
ARCANA CARDS CAN WORK THROUGH OUR LIVES
Take a walk
on the tarot side
In most decks, each major arcana card has
a title such as The Emperor or Temperance,
whereas the minor arcana cards don’t.
The major arcana cards, like the minor arcana
cards, have symbols of numerology, kabbalah
and astrology linked to them. Unlike the minor
arcana cards, the majors only have one sign or
planet connected to each. The minor arcana
cards each have a sign within a planet.
The first 22 cards in a tarot deck are known as
the major arcana. For me, these cards represent
the big life events that have huge impacts
on us.
In this Talking Tarot chapter, I’m going to
walk you through the Fool’s Journey. For me,
it gives an understanding of how the major
cards work through our lives and appear at
different stages throughout.
38 – MYSTIC REBEL MAGAZINE - AUTUMN 2019

The Fool’s
Journey
The 22 cards of the major arcana represent the
22 stages that everyone must incorporate into
their lives in order to realise their wholeness.
I’ve created the following descriptions based
upon the keywords of each card.
THE FOOL
We’ll start with The Fool, number 0 in the deck.
This card of beginnings is the representation
of innocence. He or she (for simplicity, let’s
stick to she) sets off and encounters her new
world. She is carefree and has a childlike attitude.
She is like all of us as we begin our journey of
life. She is known as The Fool simply because
of her innocent beliefs and uncertainty of
what’s ahead. Spontaneous, new and fresh,
this is the start of a new journey. With her face
to the world but her footing unclear, she is
ready to go ahead but she has no plan. She is
unaware of what lies before her, yet she is eager
to get going. Zero can be the start or end
in numerology. For me, it’s the start.
THE MAGICIAN AND
THE HIGH PRIESTESS
As she sets out on this unknown journey, she
encounters The Magician and The High Priestess.
The Magician is our conscious awareness, the
masculine and positive side. He represents
creativity and impulsive power. The Magician
shows that through concentration and will
power anything is possible.
The High Priestess is the unconscious and
negative side. She’s the mysterious feminine
influence and our intuition. She lends us the
grounds to create the universe through our
fertile minds. The High Priestess is our unrealised
potential and The Magician is the active
part that materialises our potential. Upon
encountering these, the fool learns how to
manifest what she desires using her intuition
for best results.
Unlike how the terms positive and negative
are generally perceived, they are not the same
as good and bad, a human concept that’s not
a part of the tarot. The Magician and the High
Priestess are equal in all ways. Their differences
create a perfect balance. As the shadow self
and the light self, their very existence depends
on one another.
THE EMPRESS
The Fool grows and continues her journey,
becoming more and more aware of her surroundings.
She first recognises a familiar
connection in her mother, the warm, loving
woman who nourishes and cares for her. She
also comes to know Mother Earth, who nurtures
her in a larger sense.
The loving influences show the fool what it
is to be loved unconditionally as well as how
to love unconditionally. She learns to love
Mother Earth and to respect all of nature. Like
all babies, she is in awe of the new sensations,
smells, touches and tastes. She is happy to explore
the abundant goddess in Mother Nature.
THE EMPEROR
Naturally, The Fool encounters her father in
The Emperor. As The Empress reflects the
mother, The Emperor reflects the father.
AUTUMN 2019 – MYSTIC REBEL MAGAZINE – 39

He represents structure, authority, mastery
and control. The Fool’s carefree nature is starting
to see that sometimes structure and routine
are needed. Being in an orderly fashion is
comfortable.
She begins to understand that rules and
certain behaviours are important and necessary.
She learns people in-power and authority
enforce rules and guidelines. This frustrates
her free-thinking ways. However, with the
guidance of her father in The Emperor, she has
a better understanding and acceptance of this.
THE HIEROPHANT
As time goes on, The Fool leaves the nest for
the bigger world. She has been sheltered from
the outside ways. It’s now time for her to become
exposed to all that life has to offer.
Beliefs and traditions form important roles.
Organised belief systems and new cultures will
give her a sense of belonging outside of her
mother’s arms.
She learns to feel a part of groups and communities,
learning how to conform and seeing
life’s societies and cultures. She is eager to
learn, and she seeks knowledge from those
that inspire her, those in the know.
Although the image of The Hierophant shows
a religious figure blessing two acolytes, it
more points to conforming to a belief system
rather than a religion.
A hierophant is someone who interprets arcane
knowledge and mysteries. The Fool must
become aware of her own values and beliefs.
While learning from the works of others, she
becomes more and more aware of her needs.
THE LOVERS
Feeling settled and at peace from The Hierophant’s
hands, The Fool eventually faces a new
challenge.
She experiences the powerful urge for sexual
union with another being. So far, it has all
been about herself.
Now she seeks connecting with another on a
much deeper level than she has experienced
so far. She wants to share her life with someone
other than herself.
She feels she needs to be more balanced and
wants to be part of a loving relationship, one
that will give her butterflies and excitement
but also good conversations, deep communication,
choices and a taste for her sexual
desires.
THE CHARIOT
As The Fool is now becoming an adult, she
knows herself well and has more control over
herself. Through hard work, discipline and
willpower, she has developed an inner control
that allows her to win over obstacles, victory
over adversity.
With a strong ego leading The Fool to success
now, she rides through all obstacles and masters
her actions. Those around her can see she
is in control of herself and the situations she
is facing. Knowing not to give up when the
going gets tough, her assertive young attitude
gives her the confidence to keep going.
STRENGTH
Despite the victory of The Chariot, life hands
The Fool different challenges, some causing
anguish and disenchantment. The Fool now
must draw strength and courage from deep
within as well as maintain a balance of masculine
and feminine energy.
Discovering the attributes of patience and tolerance,
she learns that handling situations in
a cool, controlled manner is the best way. She
knows the assertive attitude of The Chariot
must now be softened and a love wins over
hate approach is much needed.
HERMIT
With life’s ups and downs, The Fool starts to
question what life is about, the ways of the
world. Becoming absorbed with herself and
needing to have a period of reflection to
search deep within the questions poised, she
searches in the deep need of truth
The Fool begins to look inward, trying to
understand her feelings and motivations. The
exciting world she once desired has a different
look and feel about it. She needs solitude
now to hide away from the hectic activities of
society. During this period, she is asking the
universe to send a guide or teacher, someone
who can give her advice as to what direction
to go next.
WHEEL OF FORTUNE
After much soul-searching and time for reflection,
the Fool begins to see how everything
connects. She can see how life flows up and
down and in and out. She begins to understand
life’s cycles, how patterns are formed
and how she is accountable for her actions.
WHEEL OF FORTUNE
The Wheel of Fortune symbolises the mysterious
universe whose parts work together in
harmony.
She notices that sometimes her experiences
seem to be the toil of fate: a change works out
for the better, a chance encounter allows her
to recognise her destiny and the movements
of events lead to new doors opening.
She realises, after some time out, action is
required to get life moving once again. This
realisation comes with her knowledge of previous
events. Her wisdom has grown, and her
sense of purpose is clearer.
JUSTICE
The Fool must now search for what has
brought her to this point. She knows she must
take personal responsibility and be accountable
for all her actions so as she can make
amends and move on in an honest fashion.
She knows that it’s justice to start afresh where
needs be.
She knows in order to be true to herself, she
has choices. She can grow, own up to her
mistakes, learn and move on through them
despite the difficulties they may bring. Alternatively,
she can hide them away and carry on
a stunted existence for an easier life.
HANGED MAN
Determined to see her true vision, The Fool
continues her growth, even though she finds
it is not as easy as she hoped.
Sooner or later, she encounters her personal
cross. Her life swings in the balance and she is
asked to see things from a different angle and
a higher perspective. Although it is extremely
challenging, she is forced to choose what to
let go of.
Feeling tired, lost and defeated, it will be
awhile before she sees that her sacrifice was
worthwhile in the long run. When her control
finally releases, she realises that everything
works out to how it should be. At first glance,
it seemed her life was upside down. However,
on deeper understanding, she finds peace
within.
DEATH
The Fool now begins to get rid of bad habits
and old ways that have left her tiresome. She
cuts out nonessentials because she appreciates
the basics of life.
AUTUMN 2019 – MYSTIC REBEL MAGAZINE – 41

As she goes through the endings of what she
has outgrown, she feels as if she’s dying herself.
She leaves behind what no longer excites,
like a butterfly having to go through the
chrysalis stage to be re born into something
new.
The process feels uneasy and challenging.
However, when she realises that death is not
a permanent state but a transition, she becomes
more excited about the next part of her
journey.
TEMPERANCE
Since embracing The Hermit, The Fool has
been on an emotional rollercoaster. She now
understands how temperance is necessary to
bring balance and stability.
She knows after going through such radical
and emotional changes that she can be
happy with moderation. Now becoming more
centred and whole, her health and wellbeing
glows.
She knows now that living a harmonious life is
far better than the extremes of power or loss.
She becomes aware of patience and being
flexible in order to reach her desired goals and
live a more balanced life.
THE DEVIL
The Fool has her health, a harmonious mind
set and a refined self-control. What more could
she need? On everyday terms, not much.
However, The Fool is tenacious, and she continues
to explore the nethermost parts of her
being. She soon comes face to face with The
Devil
Offering temptations, The Devil shows itself to
The Fool and she becomes over obsessed with
life. Soon she is bound by material attractions.
However, once she realises that she holds the
key to the release of all trappings, she frees
herself.
The ignorance and hopelessness she felt at
paying The Devil’s price does not leave her
completely but provides a lesson about not
becoming a slave for such desires.
TOWER
How could the Fool free herself from The
Devil? She couldn’t root out his influence. She
could only find liberation through the abrupt
transition represented by The Tower.
The Tower is the safe surroundings she built
up around herself to feel secure, only to end in
serving as a prison. To free herself she had to
shake things up. Once ruler of her castle, she
had to be humble during upheavals.
This is exactly what’s needed to be free of The
42 – MYSTIC REBEL MAGAZINE - AUTUMN 2019

Devil’s binds, to be free from what is holding
you down and to get you back on your journey
to your soul’s fulfilment. The darkness and
despair of the uncertain change brings with it
a bolt of lightning to clear the way, showing
revelations that make the experience worthwhile.
STAR
The Fool is now calm. Once again, the light has
shown its way through the dark.
Feeling serene and at peace with herself once
again, her soul is no longer hidden behind the
cloth that disguised her true purpose.
The sky is bright, The Star illuminated, and
there is hope and inspiration once more. Feeling
free of The Devil’s negative energies, The
Fool is blessed with much universal trust and
faith.
Her heart is open once more and she has
replaced her fears with a joy and love that she
wishes to share freely. This really is the calm
after the storm.
Hopes and dreams fulfil her thoughts. With
a sense of true freedom, she radiates health
while balance and calm are at her call.
MOON
Could there be more challenges in store after
such bliss? What effect could spoil this perfect
calm?
In fact, it is her bliss that makes her vulnerable
to the illusions of The Moon. The Fool’s joy and
peaceful state is that of just feeling.
Being so positive and dreamy, her mental state
is not so clarified. She is open to fantasies,
illusions, false pictures, delusions and dreamy
conditions that may be hidden from a logical
mind.
Her mind is stimulated by imagination from
her unconscious, giving her unrealistic
thoughts, deep seated fears and anxieties that
leave her feeling bewildered and lost. All is not
what it seems, and she will have to wait for
clarity.
SUN
It is the bright illumination of The Sun’s clarity
that helps her imagination settle. Shining
out and helping her see the wonders and the
great goodness of the world, it dispels negative
confusion and clouds of misjudgement,
bringing enlightenment and positive hope
once again.
The Sun’s beaming energy gives her a muchneeded
boost of self-confidence, fun and
enthusiasm once more. The new dawn has
a welcome opening with no challenges or
disruptions.
She can light her inside fire. The warmth of The
Sun with its brilliant shine radiates through
her skin and bones, revitalizing her and assuring
her of the great goodness of the world and
happier times ahead.
JUDGEMENT
The Fool has been reborn. Her false ego-self
has been shed, allowing her radiant, true self
to manifest. She has discovered that joy, not
fear, is what is at the centre of life.
The Fool feels awakened. She knows the
benefit of forgiveness, not only of herself but
of others too. She knows that love is pure and
that she is made of it.
She is fully aware of her past and the journey
she has undertaken. However, the burden no
longer rests upon her. She knows her ignorance
in the past no longer needs to form her
future. She is ready to be fully awake to her
calling now.
The Fool experiences life as full and meaningful.
In line with her calling, the next chapter is
filled with hope and promise.
Actively seeking the larger picture now, her
accomplishments are many. Nothing will be
the same again, the knowledge and the experience
she has gained will serve her well.
In the end, The Fool’s journey was not so ridiculous
after all. Through persistence, honesty,
and digging deep within, The Fool found
her way through life to feel fully aware of her
place in the world.
Now ready to begin a new journey, the cycle
begins over again. She steps back into her
original position of The Fool at the start of her
new journey that will lead her to even greater
understanding.
Since this day has arrived, she can make life
adjustments for herself. Knowing herself truly,
she can make the correct choices about the
future, choosing wisely what will serve her
purpose the best.
Her higher self is now calling to rise, doubts
have faded, and she is awakened to her vocation.
WORLD
At last. The Fool re-enters The World, but this
time with a more complete understanding.
She has come full circle. After the ups and
downs, a new chapter awaits. Fulfilment and a
completed state arise.
Llewellyn’s Little Book of Halloween by Mikie Mueller
Llewellyn’s Little Book of Halloween written by Mickie Mueller is as enchanting as it
is visually appealing. It is a small, black hardback book with an orange foil print design
that comes alive when it catches the light. Throughout the book’s five chapters
and spread across 219 pages, you share in Mickie’s own Halloween memories as
she shares over 30 exercises in how to better your own Halloween with everything
from décor suggestions to recipes and yes even spells. You are taken on a historical
journey through the origins of Halloween and the symbolism found there-in. You
will find yourself nodding to some parts and also tilting your head in wonder as
you discover something new. It is a quaint book that packs a huge punch that you
will want to curl up with on a cold day. Though, I believe for many of us who live
and love Halloween, and who get impatient for the fall months to approach… we’ll
be keeping this little gem close by and ready to delve into at any moment throughout
the year. You could even slip this little book into your handbag, down the side
The Magic by Rhonda Byrne
The Magic written by Rhonda Byrne is a 28
day and 28 exercise book written across 254
pages. This is a book for both the sceptical
and well-practised amongst us. It is the third
book in the series following on from the
film The Secret. If you are unsure, lost, out
of sorts, or even thinking magic and the law
of attraction is complete nonsense, simply
practising these exercises will bring you to
centre and living the most magical life you
can. The Magic is the revelation of a sacred
text and is one of those books that you do
not have to read cover to cover, at least not
right away. But it is one of those books you
feel called to opening. If you feel you are
lacking in abundance in a certain area of
your life, I urge you to scour the contents
and find the exercise most fitting your situation.
Each day is kept relatively short with
a section to read followed by an exercise,
making it easy to apply at the beginning
or end of your day. The Magic is truly a gift
which keeps on giving and I believe should
be found on everyone’s bookshelf. Everyone
deserves a little bit of magic in their life and this book, if used correctly, can and will
help. It reminds us how easy magic is, how old and natural magic is and how even
the simplest of applications can impact one’s life. With Christmas and New Year fast
approaching, I say to gift yourself and your loved ones a book that can truly change
your/their life for the better. To put it simply, this book life changing.
I would give The Magic 4 stars
Manifesting
With The Moon
TAKE THE LAW OF ATTRACTION TO THE NEXT
LEVEL WITH MOON MAGIC!
It’s long been believed that the moon has a
hold over human behaviour, particularly at the
full moon when emotions run high and werewolves
howl at our lonely, lunar satellite. Many
gardeners and farmers plant by the phase of
the moon to ensure green-fingered success.
Women’s menstrual cycles follow a pattern
similar to the moon phases. The rise and fall of
tides are influenced by the moon.
The phases of the moon have an energetic
influence over behaviour, human or otherwise,
including the law of attraction. While the law
of attraction doesn’t need a particular moon
phase to work – it will work regardless –you
can increase your success by working with
lunar energy.
The moon orbits the earth every 29 days,
waxing to full moon then waning to the dark
moon. The appearance of the moon changes
over the cycle of the orbit with the full moon
glowing bright and round in the sky then
gradually diminishing until it disappears completely
at the dark moon. The new moon is a
slither of a crescent which then grows until it
is back to being full.
BEGIN AT THE DARK
MOON
Use the time of the dark moon, when there is
no visible light from the moon, to begin planning
what you would like to manifest. Traditionally
this isn’t a time to work your magic
but to rest, reflect and take stock of what you
already have. The dark moon is best used to
ponder your deepest desires and to explore
what you really want to attract into your life.
If you haven’t already got a moon calendar or
app, you might want to use this time to get
one. There are free apps that will tell you the
current moon phase – you’ll need it to keep
track of the lunar cycle.
With the law of attraction, we work as mag-
nets to draw towards us what we want.
We’re focused on the positive so while
working with the moon, keep your intentions
positive.
You might want to use this time to purchase
a notebook to keep track of your
moon manifesting. In the notebook,
record all your moon manifesting desires.
Make sure you date each entry and note
the moon phase – leave space to put the
date when the Universe delivers too.
HOW TO MANIFEST
WITH THE MOON
Using lunar energy and the law of attraction
is best done from the new moon to
the full moon: when the moon is waxing
or growing. After the dark moon, use the
moon phase guide to begin manifesting
your desires.
In your notebook, turn to a clean page
and put the heading ‘New Moon’ at the
top of the page. Then repeat for ‘Waxing
Moon’ and ‘Full Moon’.
At the new moon, write down what you
want to manifest (check with the guide).
Date your entry and write out what you
want to attract in positive language (like
an affirmation). It’s important to find a
balance between being specific in your
desire and enough vague so the Universe
has wiggle room to deliver what you
truly want. For example, if you want a
new partner in your life and you focus on
very specific attributes (such as physical
appearance) rather than qualities, it will
probably take a long time for your desire
to manifest (perhaps even lifetimes!). The
end result might mean you miss out on
being with a perfect partner because you
want that talk, dark, handsome stranger
and you won’t settle for a tall, blond,
49 – RUNNING TITLE
AUTUMN 2019 – MYSTIC REBEL MAGAZINE – 49

handsome stranger instead!
In your notebook, you might want to write
something like:
‘As the new moon raises power, I attract
________ to me now. I will not settle for less,
but I will gratefully receive more or better.’
After the new moon, focus on attracting
things into your life that fall within the waxing
moon category. Under the ‘Waxing Moon’
heading in your notebook, write down what
you want to manifest. Remember to keep the
wording positive and ‘vaguely specific’. You
might want to write your desire in a format
such as this:
‘As the waxing moon grows and glows, I attract
________ to me now. I will not settle for
less, but I will gratefully receive more or better.’
On the full moon, in your notebook under the
‘Full Moon’ heading, write down anything you
want to manifest that covers stability in your
life. Look at the full moon guide for ideas. As
before, you want positive, ‘vaguely specific’
wording.
‘As the full moon bursts with brightness, I attract
________ to me now. I will not settle for
less, but I will gratefully receive more or better.’
Refer to your notebook during the waning
energy – look at it daily. When something you
have written manifests, write the date next to
it and cross it out.
Rinse and repeat the following lunar month!
THE NEW MOON
The new moon happens after the dark moon
when a slither of crescent moon is visible in
the night sky.
causing the metaphorical seeds you plant to
swell and burst. The new moon is the perfect
time to begin attracting things in your life that
require outside assistance, strength, are temporary
or involve movement such as:
• Better health, particularly for any skin,
blood, neurological, endocrine or
circulation disorders.
• A new car.
WA XING MOON
Lunar waxing energy is from after the slight
crescent of the new moon until the moons
grows to almost full.
After the new moon, the gravitational pull
lessens but moonlight increases. This is a great
time to begin manifesting things that require
your own energy to bring success, things that
can be birthed or affairs of the heart such as:
• Better health, particularly for the heart or
internal organs.
• Emotional wellbeing.
• A new romantic partner.
• Starting a family.
• Launching a new project or venture.
• Personal goals or dreams that are not
reliant on other people.
Lunar gravity increases and pulls water up
FULL MOON
The full moon is the round, bright celestial
body -it can’t get any bigger and will soon
begin to decrease.
The lunar gravitational pull is high at the full
moon which means the metaphorical ground
is moist and ready for deep planting. This is the
time to manifest stability into your life such as:
• Better health in general but particularly
for disorders involving legs, mobility, or
mental wellness.
• A new permanent job or career change.
• Get a promotion.
• Find a new home.
• Start a healthy eating regime.
• Long term financial or business goals.
• More money!
WANING MOON
After the moon has reached its beautiful
fullness, it gradually decreases in size until
it disappears from the sky completely at the
dark moon. This decrease is the waning moon
energy.
than actively work on attracting new opportunities,
events, people or situations into your
life, the waning moon time is about making
space for your manifestations and cultivating
what’s in the pipeline.
During the waning moon:
• Clear away any clutter in your life even if it
is not directly related to any of your moon
manifestations. Cluttered energy stops the
flow of new opportunities.
• Tidy up any half-finished projects
particularly if they stop you from
manifesting what you desire. For example,
if you want to sell your house, finish
decorating. Or you might want a new job
but haven’t yet filled out the application
form. Don’t delay – use the waning energy
to tidy and finish things. Get stuff done!
• Remove any obvious blocks that’s stopping
the law of attraction working for you. This
might mean leaving an old relationship so
a new one can enter, actively looking for a
new job, putting your home on the market
or saying yes to any opportunity that
presents itself.
• Don’t forget that holding onto limiting
beliefs is your biggest block. Work on
banishing them during the waning moon
phase. EFT (emotional freedom technique)
is perfect for this.
There is a decreased gravitational pull and
moonlight during the waning moon. Rather
Diary of a Yogi with Sonya
Kumar
Practice Makes...
I HAVE COME TO REALISE THAT TALENT
ALONE IS HIGHLY OVERRATED. IT IS SPANGLY
AND IT IS SPARKLY BUT THERE IS SO MUCH
TO BE SAID FOR PRACTICING SOMETHING
THAT YOU ARE NOT NATURALLY TALENTED IN.
I have come to realise that talent
alone is highly overrated.
It is spangly and it is sparkly
but there is so much to be
said for practicing something
that you are not naturally
talented in.
This is a love letter to those of
us who are trying to do any
sort of practice and share that
practice with others, spiritual
or otherwise.
Why am I saying this? Because
the moment I started
to value my practice as a spiritual
practice (which in Hindi
is called Sadhana), everything
changed. The process of practicing
has unlocked many
secrets of life that I simply
would not have learnt if I was
gifted with talent.
ME
I have practiced yoga for
seven years and regularly
share kirtan (mantra chanted
to melody and rhythm) in and
around Southampton and
London. I play the mrdangam,
a two-sided Indian
drum. I picked up the drum
because my kirtan friends at
the time needed a drummer
and there was no one else to
do it so, I reluctantly agreed
to be a filler until the real
drummer turned up.
AUTUMN 2019 – MYSTIC REBEL MAGAZINE – 53

I am also naturally quite a quiet person.
MY PRACTICE
When I started out drumming, I played a very
simple eight beat. It takes anywhere between
two and five minutes to learn, it’s that simple. I
have practiced this eight beat, secretly hoping
that I would unlock some amazing funky
drumming talent inside of me that’s been
waiting there all along. However, the reality
is that I play the same eight beat now as I did
then. I can play it faster and with more groove
but essentially it is the same.
I mistook lack of talent as having nothing
meaningful to say
I took this lack of talent as meaning that I have
no meaningful voice to direct what kirtan
songs we should play and how we should
play them. I thought I had nothing meaningful
to say during the kirtans because I was the
mediocre percussionist. I was racked with selfdoubt
every single time we played kirtan with
others. I felt like a fraud.
So, I found myself listening to those who had
ability and talent in the musical field. I let
myself be overshadowed by talent and I have
hidden in the talent of others, so much so that
I lost myself and would start to follow.
I handed the microphone of my heart to the
voice of another. It was easier than listening to
myself, it was easier to pass over responsibility
to them. But in that, I missed the very thing I
was endeavouring to do, live an authentic life
and hold gatherings with community so they
also can learn to live authentic lives.
SO WHY PRACTICE?
Practice can help you discover and listen to
your own voice. Your voice will become an
anchor that won’t be drowned out by louder
voices inside your head or outside.
The same drum practice that brought all my
insecurities to the fore is now showing me the
way out of succumbing to these mind patterns.
A very simple drum practice.
Sadhana can be defined as a tool to unlock
the potential we carry as human beings. As
Sadguru says, “Everything can be sadhana.
The way you eat, the way you sit, the way
you stand, the way you breathe, the way you
conduct your body, mind and your energies
and emotions – this is sadhana. Sadhana does
not mean any specific kind of activity, sadhana
means you are using everything as a tool for
your wellbeing.”
The practice has taught me patience, focus
and perseverance. It has shown me silence.
TRUST
I have come to trust that those very eight
beats I play in kirtan carry the weight of love,
learning and light that I have experienced
through practice. It comes with ever more
awareness. Each beat on that drum carries an
invitation to others to open their hearts with
me.
Some of my learnings about practice.
• A thousand times I have thought I don’t
have time to practice. There is only one
thing to do, wake up a little earlier. Don’t
waste time before bed so that you can
sleep a little earlier.
• Space. Give yourself the space of time and
space of space, even if it’s only 15 minutes
a day and in a corner of the flat dedicated
to the practice.
54 – MYSTIC REBEL MAGAZINE - AUTUMN 2019

• Inspire. Be with those that inspire you. I
have a drum inspirer, a yoga inspirer and
a life inspirer.
• Curtail expectations, they are silent
killers. Every time I have an expectation
on myself, it gets swiftly slashed with a
dose of humbleness.
• Be in a space of learning. For example,
that is me just telling myself, “Listen and
you may actually learn something, rather
than judging the practice or having a
running commentary over it.”
• This has been my mantra, “Practice
does not have to be taken seriously or
intensely.”
• Anything can become your spiritual
practice.
Sonya Kumar
Seven years of intense yoga practice and teacher training
in the UK and India has led Sonya to teach this holistic yoga
to all in workshops, classes and retreats. Parallel to her yoga
journey, Sonya has explored the effects of mantra chanting
on the body mind connection. The chanting of the mantras
in the form of devotional kirtan (music meditation) deeply
resonates in her spiritual practice and she has become one
of the few female mrdangam (Indian drum) players in the
world.
Sonya regularly shares Saadho kirtans in the UK, Europe
and India, taking people on a journey to deep inner silence
through mantra and kirtan.
Over the past five years Sonya has travelled to India regularly to deepen her practice. Together
with friends in India and the UK, she is building a community eco-system for spiritually aligned
seekers, which she is spearheading in the UK.
Sonya was also a practicing commercial property lawyer in the UK before deciding to pour her full
life energies into sharing body movement, mantra and meditation.
My Spiritual
Life
Paul Cissell
SURROUNDED BY SPIRITS FROM BIRTH, PAUL’S
PATH OF MEDIUMSHIP BEGAN IN EARNEST AF-
TER SPRITUAL ENCOUNTERS IN NEW ZEALAND
My mum would often tell the
story of the house being quiet
until the day she brought
me home from the hospital
and after that, the house was
never the same again. I spent
my childhood surrounded by
the dead and other supernatural
presences.
Later in life, I found out that
my great grandmother was
a medium at the time of the
Second World War, giving
readings to those who had
lost someone as a result of
the war. I was also told how
two of my aunts had spent
20 years going to spiritualist
churches in the hope of their
father coming through from
the other side. Alas, he never
did and eventually, they
passed over themselves.
Whilst hidden from me at
the time, both these family situations were to
become conduits to help me on my spiritual
path. Growing up just outside of Windsor in
Berkshire, I would spend a lot of time in London.
My dad’s family were all from the East
End and Mum’s family came from Sunderland.
Her family was full of northern suspicions and
traditions, which were taught to me growing
up.
After leaving school, I went into the film industry,
wanting to be a film director. As I lived very
close to the world-famous Pinewood Studios,
home to many of the James Bond and early
Superman films, I managed to get a job for a
production company there.
Despite always maintaining my close connection
to spirit, I refrained from developing my
links further.
It was only when I went to live in New Zealand
in my mid 20s that I met many holistic healers,
shamans and mediums who opened my eyes
and really awoke my spiritual senses.
Once back in the UK, I set about developing
my intuitive abilities in a more formal and
structured way at the College of Psychic Studies
in Kensington, where I would make the
50-mile round trip each week for my studies.
However, my time spent in New Zealand
wasn’t the real catalyst that sent me on my
way to becoming a professional medium.
Since a young age, I had been able to ride
horses and in my late 20s, I was riding a young
horse and leading five others when they
spooked. I fell off and was kicked in the back
on the way down. I landed in front of the horses,
which then ran over me. I remember laying
on the ground motionless and not being able
to move. Eventually, feeling to my body was
restored. However, I then spent 15 years in
continued pain, which started a life changing
movement of accepting my future path as a
spiritual medium as well as a personal journey
of self-healing and self-rejuvenation.
These days I live as a full time intuitive, spirit
medium, inspirational speaker and tutor for
my own psychic development courses. My
work has taken me to some wonderful places
across the UK and around the world and has
given me the opportunity to meet and work
with some highly respected professionals.
One of my favourite parts about the work
I do is helping to awaken others from their
dormant inner sleep to their full potentials,
whether that’s through my spiritual readings,
classes and workshops or even just by talking
to them in general conversations and helping
them to discover new ways of living physically,
spiritually and emotionally.
I believe that the message of divine love is
more important than the one who gives it. So,
the hard part for me is to create a balance and
not allow myself to become more important
than the vibration of love. Keeping my ego in
check can be difficult when I am in the public
eye.
If I was giving advice to those starting out on
this journey, it would be to learn the history
and science behind their craft, even if they’re
naturally intuitive.
Having been a part of several secret societies,
I learned the knowledge of life itself, which
opened my eyes to new ways of being. I use
this knowledge today in my own philosophies
and teachings.
Be the person you want to be, not the person
you feel you should be and learn the power
of the mind. Once it is harnessed correctly, it
becomes an incredible tool of divine love and
aspiration for your own life as well as for all
those around you.
The Business
of Autumn
Lyn Thurman invites you to
add spirit and soul to your
business this autumn.
As the weather cools and
the trees shed their leaves,
the energy of the season is
to turn inwards. The days
become longer, and the
sun-filled summer becomes
a distant memory; the sweet
burst of active energy from
the warm months wanes.
Things slow down. Autumn
is a time to gather resources
and prepare for the winter
ahead.
From the autumn equinox
until yule, we are working
with the darkest of months.
Our natural inclination is to
stock up and hibernate but
that isn’t an option when you
run your own small mindbody-spirit
business. You still
need to be of service and
make money but you can use
the seasonal energy of autumn
to your advantage.
First, it’s natural to slow
down. Spring and summer
are outwardly active seasons
– they’re high energy output
– but we aren’t designed
to maintain that level of
go-go-go all the time. We’re
designed to flow with the
seasons and cycles of life, and
our businesses should do the
same (within reason).
58 – MYSTIC REBEL MAGAZINE - AUTUMN 2019

Slow down, remove the old
and relax into the season...
Autumn is a good time to cull anything in your
business that weighs you down. In the Celtic
calendar, Samhain was when the weak or sick
cattle were slaughtered as they wouldn’t make
it through the winter months. From a spiritual
business perspective, you might want to
consider:
• Ending projects or ventures that no longer
give you joy.
• Switching business suppliers for a better
deal.
• Decluttering your office – if it’s not useful
or beautiful, recycle or give to charity.
• Digital decluttering – unsubscribe from
newsletters you don’t read and clear out
your inbox.
• Cutting out any superfluous business
costs.
With the slower paced energy, you might want
to re-evaluate your social media presence. Are
you outputting too much? Does social media
in its current form make you happy? Make
a strategy that feels good for you until the
end of the year. You can create your posts in
batches and schedule them in advance. If you
use Facebook and Instagram, Facebook has a
free handy tool called Creator Studio that lets
you schedule both Instagram and Facebook
posts from your laptop (you’ll find it from
your Facebook page under Publishing Tools).
Remember to think about how you can tie
in this slower energy with your social media
campaign – what are your clients or customers
looking for at this time of the year? Make
it relevant and interesting (think Halloween,
harvest and spiced pumpkin lattes!).
For me, this time of year is the ‘Season of the Witch’. Not that we aren’t witches any other time,
but the cooler months of the year make me happy.
Possibly the most recognised ingredient at this time of the year is the pumpkin (or squash) and
all the hot warming spices.
Souling cakes
These are called ‘cakes’ but are actually cookies.
They were traditionally baked on All Souls’
Day when children visited villages begging
for food. Going back in history even further,
these were believed to have been left on
graves for the dead.
Ingredients
• 350g/12 ¼ oz plain flour (all purpose)
• 175g/6 oz caster sugar
• 175g/6 oz butter, softened
• 1 egg
• ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
• ½ teaspoon mixed spice
• Pinch nutmeg
• 1 ½ teaspoons cider vinegar
Preheat your oven to 350F/180C/Gas 4.
Grease two baking sheets.
Mix all the dry ingredients together and rub
in the butter. Add the egg and vinegar and
mix together to form a soft dough.
On a floured surface, roll out to about 5mm/
Corn & squash soup
This soup just says, “Hey, autumn come
on in!”
Ingredients
• 1 butternut squash (or similar),
peeled and diced
• 2 tablespoons olive or vegetable oil
• 1 large onion, chopped
• 1 jalapeno chilli, chopped (or ½
teaspoon dried chilli flakes)
• 2 cloves garlic, crushed
• 1 heaped teaspoon cumin seeds
• 1 tablespoon dried oregano
• Salt and pepper
• Large tin of sweetcorn or the kernels
from 2 corn cobs
• Tablespoon coriander (cilantro)
• 2 large tomatoes, chopped
• 1 litre/35 fl oz vegetable stock
Heat the oil in a pan and add the onions,
squash, chilli, garlic, cumin and
oregano. Cook for about ten minutes
on a low heat. Add the stock, tomatoes,
corn, coriander and season with salt and
pepper. Bring to the boil and then turn
down the heat to simmer for twenty
minutes until the squash is tender.
Options
• Use pumpkin instead of squash.
• This also works with sweet potatoes
instead of squash.
• If you like it hotter, double the chilli.
• If you don’t like coriander, replace it
with parsley.
• The fresh tomatoes can be replaced
with a tin of tomatoes, drained.
Zech Perry embraces the season
with a dash of magic
Journey of a
Witch: Autumn
BID FAREWELL TO SUMMER AND WELCOME IN THE NEW SEASON WITH A
BEAUTIFUL MEDITATION BY ZECH PERRY. ALLOW YOURSELF TO GATHER
YOUR ENERGY AND CONNECT WITH AUTUMN.
Whatever summer has offered, it was exactly how it was meant to be. There was a true sense of
abundance and freedom in the air. Whether you basked in broad beams of sunlight or danced
around in sandals, it was perfect.
Let us look onwards - to the gentle decline that is autumn.
Many of us set seeds for wishes and dreams. We nurtured them with visualisation, creative action
and sacred smoke. Watching them grow steadily throughout the hot months and perhaps
noticed a crescendo around the dog days? This is in-line with the harvest cycle, which peaks at
Lughnasadh.
Up until now, windows have been held wide open and feasts have been enjoyed on bumpy
grass. Now, shut the windows down- but do not close them completely, not just yet.
Autumn is about the senses: smell the cooling earth, hear the crunch underfoot, see the vegetation
change and listen out for rain, as life blessedly ebbs towards the quieter experiences within
the Wheel.
Yet autumn is about colour! And we can also choose to adorn ourselves with autumn through
the clothes we wear. Changing our clothes or their colours is, in my opinion, a practical and
undervalued part of magick. I don’t mean swiftly changing into a robe before the altar; instead
think about harmonising with your surroundings daily, using the different textures and materials
you wear. Browns and deep oranges, ochre and umber are all autumn’s colours.
64 – MYSTIC REBEL MAGAZINE - AUTUMN 2019

The message of autumn is an important part of the fulfilment cycle but many ways more subdued.
Summertime, with its overt displays of wealth, is the time of year when our powers of
manifestation are at their peak. Autumn sits in our magickal cycle, teaching us to reflect on our
achievements by reining everything in slightly before embarking on the return journey.
When we are in the throes of success and having the times of our lives, it can be difficult to calm
things down and start a gentler approach. Living within autumn’s energy will guarantee a greater
connection to our successes and therefore our ability to confidently reap our efforts. Nature is
a success story after all. This is the call of the season.
It is during reflection that we learn our deepest truths. Spend some time creating this autumn;
dress your space and scribble in your book. Use materials whose colours and textures reflect the
season. Ask reflective questions: What works? What doesn’t/didn’t? What do we want more of?
What do we never want to encounter again? Your scribblings and pictures will come in handy
later.
With the coming chill in the air, most trees will be taking their green back inside. Autumn has
therefore become my favourite time to re-evaluate my connection with nature.
The natural world changes so overtly. Leaves slide from their summer identity, morphing to fiery
shades and golden browns before they are husks upon the streets; having enacted their own
funeral procession with majesty. The personality of the air also changes. Once a deep embrace
that calls us to be outdoors, now a breeze that reminds us of home.
There’s no rush in the Wheel, it just turns. Be ready, as we might find ourselves changing more
slowly than the natural world. But worry not, as all our work is aimed for the depths of winter,
where our soul hibernates, and we achieve reconnection with our ancestors freely. It is from this
place that we can analyse our deepest motives and ideas before we are renewed.
Drawing in your Green
I have decided to celebrate our first autumn together by offering you a meditation that will
simultaneously connect you to the season by celebrating your greatest work and draw your aims
and aspirations back inside for re-evaluation. It might be a nice idea to perform this meditation
before Samhain as a purification ritual.
I am not suggesting that you stop working forward. Just do as the autumn does and draw some
of those loose ends back inside.
It is with gathered energy that you will burst forth with new vigour when the time comes.
Go to a quiet space outdoors. Somewhere you know well. I would choose somewhere that I have
noticed growing from bud to stem through the year. I have nurtured a partnership with Southampton
common and it is beside the still pool that I feel most alive in my urban witch capacity.
POSTURE
Stand powerfully in your space, with feet spread slightly apart. Make sure your spine is straight
and your shoulders are relaxed. Tilt your head forward so that the back of your neck is in line with
your spine. Take your arms slightly away from your body, pointing your palms down towards the
earth.
Notice that you make the shape of a triangle in this position. Breathe deep, in and out. This posture
allows energy to flow freely throughout your body. You may decide to use a chant or mantra
alongside the visualisation.
INNER EYE
Summarise the summer months by remembering the parts of your life that have worked well.
Think back to your journaling. Maybe you want to give thanks for a piece of work coming to
fruition? Maybe you want to think back to a seed you set down at Ostara, and nurtured to its
fulfilment? Wherever your bone-house takes you magically, this is your most perfect time to
celebrate.
RAISE POWER
Once the images are strong in your inner eyes and you can feel the swell of the summertime
pulsing through your veins, open your eyes suddenly. You will be brought back to the reality of
your autumn earth, its decline, its rest. See the season around you. Leaves are turning colour. Our
emotions will change in their own way over the next three months.
DRAW IN YOUR GREEN
A heady energy is now flowing through you. Draw in your green. With conviction, pull back on
emotional cords that have flung themselves on to situations that frankly don’t matter in the
great scheme. Pull back on ropes and binds that have tied you to situations and events during
the last few months.
66 – MYSTIC REBEL MAGAZINE - AUTUMN 2019

Visualise yourself hauling strands and string towards you. Severing all connections to outmoded,
upsetting or stressful occurrences that find themselves coiled in your mind and impacting your
experience. Visualise these strands being neutralised as they enter your body.
Once you feel this is complete give thanks to the autumn, knowing that like the ferns on the
floor and the mighty trees above, you too have pulled in your energy.
The call
Embrace change. Embrace the ebb towards death and destruction. This is where the end begins;
it is a beautiful space to be in. Filled with
heady scents and warm colours, the autumn
just as exciting as the reach of a long summer.
is
Embrace the chill, walk in the gathering cold;
stride along in the rain and adventure deep
beneath darkening skies. I hope to meet
many of you behind the veil as we celebrate
Samhain alongside our ancestors in the crisp
autumn air.
Blessed be.
Shamanism Q&A with
Paul Thurman
What is a shaman?
P.T. Originally, the title of shaman
was used solely by the indigenous
peoples of Siberia and neighbouring
parts of Asia to describe a
priest like person that travels into
different realms in an altered state.
He took these journeys to gain wisdom
and knowledge or to recover
soul pieces and spirit animals for
those who sought his services.
Now, in the West, the title is loosely
used as an umbrella term for anyone
that contacts the spirit world in
an altered state. By this definition,
the emphasis on bringing something
beneficial back from the spirit
realm is negated. Providing he or
she is in an altered state, a traveller
can enter the spirit realm for absolutely
any reason, good or ill.
Since I have not been trained by
an indigenous person from Siberia
or one of the neighbouring parts
of Asia but I have been trained to
travel the worlds for the benefit of
myself as well as others, I claim the
title of shaman as well as witch.
How do you practice shamanism?
P.T. In my belief system, the
world is in such a terrible condition
because most people have lost their
connections to the spirits. Without
these connections, they live under
the illusion that humans are the
only creations that have souls. This
causes great arrogance and selfishness.
Personal and immediate gain
is sought at the expense of everything
else.
the knowledge I receive through
bartering with the spirits I visit with
(there is always a price to pay) and
apply it where it’s needed.
In my opinion, cosmic touring is
only worthwhile if I return with
something beneficial towards
growth and healing. Otherwise it
simply isn’t worth the energy or
risks.
Is shamanism something I
can practice on my own?
P.T. Yes, shamanism is a solitary
practice.
That being said, I do recommend
that you initially seek out an experienced
shaman to learn the ropes.
In order to journey through the
other worlds and dimensions safely,
it’s important to learn some basic
travelling techniques such as altering
your state, soul retrieval, spirit
etiquette, respectful bartering,
various ways to defend yourself and
how to return home safely without
having picked up any hitchhikers.
Sometimes using legal herbs but
mostly using meditation techniques,
I visit other realms and dimensions
to seek answers on what
can be done to improve my life and
lives in my community. I then take
Thinning of
the Veil
From time immemorial, this has been the season when the veil
between worlds is at its thinnest. Ancestors, shamans, witches
and other magical entities found it much easier to walk between
the worlds than any other time of the year.
However, times are changing. Our foolish decisions and actions
regarding our ecology have altered the natural flow of everything
including the thickening and thinning of the veil.
Over the last five years, I’ve noticed the veil’s strength has
weakened considerably. This year it’s only a shadow of what it
used to be.
A weak veil means there’s no longer strong boundaries that
separate our world from the others. We’ve foolishly and unwittingly
destroyed a natural defence system. Now anything from
anywhere can cross over with little to no difficulty.
Although we must strive to right our errors and heal the damage
we’ve done to both the cosmos and the veil if we expect
our kind to continue, we must also learn to adapt to life as it
currently is.
AUTUMN 2019 – MYSTIC REBEL MAGAZINE – 69

Since we know that not everything that crosses
into our realm is benevolent, it becomes
more important now than ever before to connect
to and work with our ancestors and other
earth spirits on a regular basis. They
have the knowledge and skills we
need to protect ourselves and
our communities as well
as to bring healing to the
land.
It’s my opinion that ancestors
and earth spirits
don’t often get the
recognition and respect
they deserve. In my experience,
people tend to turn
to sky spirits with the expectation
that they have all the
answers and will willingly clean up
everyone’s mess.
This is fanciful thinking at best. Anyone who
has ever worked with a spirit can tell you that
spirits will ally with you if they respect you
and your cause and there is something in it
for them. However, they will not jump in free
gratis and do all the work. All spirits, including
angels, have their own agendas and tasks
to perform. Sometimes these include us but
more often they don’t. So, if we require their
aid, we need to give them something in return,
whether that’s time, an allegiance or an
item.
The bonus to working with ancestors and
earth spirits is that their agendas are likely
to line up with ours more often because we
share some commonalities. Ancestors, providing
you contact the right ones, want family
lines to continue. Earth spirits don’t want the
world to end because, like us, they’ll cease to
exist.
We still need to provide gifts when we wish
to work with ancestors and earth spirits. This
is just common etiquette. When working with
others, we would not expect them to give
THERE ARE
PLENTY OF SPIR-
ITS, ESPECIALLY ANCESTORS
AND EARTH SPIRITS THAT
CAN HELP US TURN THINGS
AROUND IF WE ARE HUMBLE
AND WILLING TO DO WHAT’S
NECESSARY.
their time, talents and gifts without some
sort of compensation. Similarly, we would not
invite others to our houses without offering
them drinks and food.
When working with ancestors or
earth spirits, always treat them
with generosity and respect.
Before you make any requests
of them, take time
to get to know them. Bring
offerings to your meeting
place, whether that’s
at home or at a location
connected with or sacred
to the spirits of choice.
Be interested and curious as
to their goals and show willingness
to be of service to them.
Visit many times and build relationships.
When you feel as though there is an
understanding and respect between you, ask
them for aid.
At the time you make your request, ask them
what they want in return. If they’re willing to
aid you and you’re willing and able to meet
their need, strike a deal and be sure to live
up to your end of the bargain. Going back on
your word can have dire consequences.
If either of you is unwilling to perform the
other’s request, respectfully say thanks and
leave it at that.
At that stage, you’ll need to find different
spirits to align with. This is not to say that you
won’t remain friends with the refusing spirits.
It only means that they weren’t the right fit.
Often, it takes time to find just the right spirit
to ally with.
This is the process we use daily in dealing
with others of our kind. It’s egotistical and
condescending to believe it should be otherwise
when working with spirits different than
ourselves.
Yes, the earth and the veil are nearly gone
and spirits that despise us can easily cross the
thresholds. But all is not lost.
There are plenty of spirits, especially ancestors
and earth spirits that can help us turn things
around if we are humble and willing to do
what’s necessary.
Don’t delay. Use this season to remember and
connect with the ancestors and the earth spirits.
Begin working with all those that resonate
with you.
If all of us that love this earth join together
with all the spirits that feel the same, we will
be an unstoppable force.
Let’s commit to saving the earth and restoring
the veil.
As our hearts and minds will, so let it be.
Introduction to Meditation
Let us start by asking the question, what is
meditation?
There are numerous forms of meditative
practices around the world. Whilst meditation
is a practice of the mind, it can be a bit
of a minefield to understand the best way to
approach the subject, especially if you are new
to meditation and are discovering it can be
rather confusing as to know the right type of
meditative practice.
Meditation uses techniques to focus the mind
to be mentally clear and emotionally calm, but
the subject goes much deeper than that.
As we go about our daily lives, we often don’t
realise that we are going into our own meditative
state of mind just by doing some of the
chores we do daily.
There are many forms of what I refer to as
energetic meditation.
One example is taking your dog for a walk.
How many times, for those of us who have
dogs, have we taken our beloved pooch for a
walk on a sunny day along the beach or in the
forest and found our minds wandering and
entering a much calmer state of mind?
Another example of energetic meditation is
working out or exercising, especially if you are
listening to your favourite music, which can
help to soothe the mind.
Even washing up can put you in a peaceful
state of mind. How many times have you
found yourself standing there doing the washing
up, staring out of the window in front of
you and finding your mind wandering to other
places?
We can find ourselves meditating in the bath
or even in the shower, sitting peacefully in
the garden or lying on the beach. Whilst hard
work at times, gardening can also bring us
into bliss.
All these activities can help us to put our
minds into a calm and relaxed state of being.
In fact, anything that makes us feel good or
relaxed can induce the natural harmonising of
the mind, body and soul.
72 – MYSTIC REBEL MAGAZINE - AUTUMN 2019

The draw back to these types of more uncontrolled
moments is when we lose ourselves in
the quietness of our minds.
Thought is energy, and energy creates reality.
So, sometimes, we can find our minds drawing
in more negative thoughts about our current
situations, the people around us or even
ourselves.
Therefore, I always advise people wanting
to take up meditation that it’s best to find a
dedicated group or class where they can learn
more structure with tried and tested methods
of calming the mind rather than practising on
their own. Without structure, the mind can
easily wander off, as we have already discovered.
There are some very good meditation CDs on
the market, but the challenge is finding the
right one for you. There are many different
types covering everything from the inability to
sleep to anxiety and often, it’s not possible to
listen to the CD before purchasing it.
There is also a misconception that we need to
be seated during meditation, our hands set in
a required position, ready to chant. However,
some of the healthiest ways we can practice
meditation are via standing forms. Standing,
helps us to realign our governing vessels.
When correct movement is added to these
standing forms, chi energy is built, opening us
to our divine.
Some people find it very hard to sit still for
long, so these types of practises would be
perfect for anyone struggling to still the mind
and the body at the same time.
In future articles, I will go into more detail
on the varying forms of meditation and their
health benefits, when and where to meditate
and the varying techniques involved.
However, if you are interested in learning
more about this fascinating subject, find out
if there is a local meditation group near you. If
so, go along and see if it’s right for you.
Remember never to get frustrated or be harsh
with yourself, as meditation is a practice of
patience, tolerance, self-healing and most
importantly, self-love.
The Banshee:
A Homecoming
LET RACHAEL GUIDE YOU TO DISCOVER AND
CONNECT WITH THE REAL BANSHEE
I am thrilled to be able to talk to you about
this beautiful earth spirit in a way which is not
only unique but also authentic. Here I let you
get to know the real Banshee behind all the
myth and legends. I help you connect into her
true self by sharing some of my personal experiences
and telling some of her stories.
I first became aware of my connection to the
Banshee about six years ago. I was clearing
some woodland of Civil War soldiers and the
most wonderful woman in white stepped
forward.
Although I knew she was an elemental energy,
it did not occur to me that it was Banshee I
was working with. She cleared the land so empathetically
and effectively, reflecting back at
me my own balance of the feminine and masculine,
a balance of logic and emotion. She
didn’t just clear the immediate area. I found
the land changed more than 12 miles away!
A regular image of soldiers hunkered down
that I used to see on my daily routine vanished
overnight! I was blown away by this wonderful
spirit who had chosen to work with me.
She began to step forward for more and more
clearance work (clearance work is where you
move on spirits who are stuck and need help
moving forward from their death, also referred
to as rescue work). She began to come in to
help with my healing work too. I soon realised
it was the Banshee I was working with.
As a spiritual medium, I am lucky in that I can
easily discern which spirits I have stepping
forward to help without distracting myself
from the healing itself. I often find the Banshee
holding the energetic space for clients by
just being present or laying hands on them.
If a spirit steps forward to help during a treatment
and lays hands on someone, the person
receiving treatment may feel hot and cold
patches and the sensation of hands being
present even though the person giving the
treatment is not treating that space on the
body. The Banshee steps forward for women,
empaths, those who love the environment
and of course, for those
of Celtic blood.
I approach this topic from
an Irish perspective, my
mother being Irish. However,
according to British
history and mythology
and from my experience
of interpreting spirits
across Europe, the Banshee
is intertwined in our
history well past the Irish line.
The Banshee is associated with
ancient British burial mounds across
the country and the Nordic goddess Freya has
strong associations with their kind.
For the Irish line, we travel back to the Tuatha
De Danann, the tribe of the goddess Dana.
Legend has it that the original people of
Ireland were ousted from their land by interlopers.
They set sail, scattered to the winds.
A goddess drew together the broken tribe
which became the Tuatha De Danann. She
gave them back the island. The myths tell us
that they appeared through a mist on the
coast of Connaught and that Dana herself was
said to be the mist binding them together.
They lived harmoniously with those who had
previously evicted them. When it came time
for the tribe of god-like kings and queens to
pass over, they went back into the mist to join
Dana. There they remain with her and her folk.
SHE
CLEARED THE
LAND SO EMPATHETI-
CALLY AND EFFECTIVELY,
REFLECTING BACK AT ME
MY OWN BALANCE OF
THE FEMININE AND MAS-
CULINE, A BALANCE OF
LOGIC AND EMOTION.
to us in our darkest hours. She heals
souls that have passed as well
as those that weep for those
souls.She helps us express
our deep sorrow, allowing
us to weep and wail. She
helps us to release and
love our anger, a beautiful
emotion on so many
levels. She often screams
for us to release the pain
empaths and sensitives
often hold inside.
Her concern is that if we hold
onto this anger and pain, it will
embitter and twist our beautiful healing
souls, dragging us away from our true nature.
Instead, she wants to heal and empower us in
order to help us find our tongues so that we
can speak from places of love and not anger,
not holding onto pains and frustrations. She
focuses us instead on love, joy, community
and finding our particular soul tribes.
She holds space so beautifully for us; her love
is absolute and holds us up. Her wish for your
happiness makes her heart beat out of her
chest. She knows when to call you out and
when to give you a kick up the bum.
Working with sound therapy and healing, she
cries and keens with you. She then turns that
cacophony into the sound of laughter once
released, laughter being the sound of love.
Today the folk of Dana simply get passed off
as fairies, nymphs, little people and leprechauns.
But in doing so, we forget the power
and majesty, not just of the goddess but also
of the spirits which reside with her in the mists
of the other world or the Magh Mell in the old
Irish tongue. The Banshee is one of those spirits.
And, she is so much more than a bringer
of death, an aspect which has caused many to
fear her.
The Banshee is a healer at her core. She comes
I have been helped so deeply on my own healing
journey by her. I have had my fair share
of loss and trauma as well as pent up anger.
Through my journey, I have been able to find
my voice and to express myself from a place of
love. I have released feminine anger, loss and
frustration for me as well as for generations of
my female ancestors.
The Banshee wants her call to be heard again.
She wants to reconnect to us so she can help
us heal properly and deeply, pulling back the
veils that her beauty has been shrouded under.
So when I went to write a book, it was the
Banshee that stepped forward. She wanted to
be heard and so, I have allowed her to speak.
The book is a wonderful collection of storytelling,
connection into the Banshee, my
personal experience and a set of beautiful
exercises looking at getting to the core of your
issues, at deep sorrow and loss, at anger which
takes you forward into finding your words, at
ancestral healing and at finding joy in your
Autumnal
Yoga
Using simple yoga asana, we can celebrate the autumn season with movement and connection.
As the wheel turns, autumn has arrived with a gust of cold wind and flurries of falling leaves! Autumn
is a transition time with different energy compared to summer. It’s essential to honour this
as we work with our bodies. Autumn brings colder weather and longer nights but also the chance
to rest, retreat and re-charge our batteries.
The beauty of yoga asana is that we can use the physical body as a gateway for addressing emotions
and feelings as well as our physical bodies. Let autumn become a metaphor as you surrender
to your practice. Give yourself time if you find yourself reluctant to let go, like an autumn leaf
clinging to a branch. Savour each pose and the journey through the season and practice at your
own pace.
Here are just a few fruits of autumnal yoga practice:
• Strength and balance help to see us through the darkest winter months
• Boost of immune system, endorphins and happiness levels
• Offers a chance to reflect on how you’ve developed through the past year and realise if there’s
anything you’re holding on to that could be let go of now.
Sarah’s top autumnal yoga ideas
Surya Namaskara/Sun salutations
Even when the sun is not shining, we can practice sun salutations to generate warmth, increase blood
circulation and keep us active. Strength and stamina will help see us through the colder months. Building
heat in the body can help counter the growing cold of autumn. (You’ll find videos of how to do a
sun salutation sequence on my website: sentayoga.com/yogaforwitches)
Adho mukha svanasana/Downward dog
This energising pose increases the flow of the blood to the head, improving blood circulation along
with strengthening the arms and upper body. This pose may also help to relieve the low moods we
can feel on darker days.
Bhujangasana/Cobra pose
Backbends can keep the winter stiffness at bay. Cobra is a deep, therapeutic backbend that opens the
heart chakras and fills up the lungs with fresh air. This builds flexibility of the spine and strength in the
arms.
Ardha Matsyendrasana/Half lord of the fishes pose
Twists encourage the muscles of the back to release. When we’re feeling anxious, the muscles of the
upper back tend to hold a lot of tension, so use this twist to bring some life into the spine and energy
to the back muscles.
Urdva Dhanurasana/Wheel pose
This backbend works on many levels to improve our autumn wellbeing. In addition, it’s fun, which is
great for boosting our endorphins at this time of year. Backbends also help un-do that winter hunch
that gradually begins to creep in at this time of year, opening out the heart, shoulders, lungs and back
as well as improving stamina and flexibility. If you want to work towards this pose, seek an experienced
yoga teacher/regular class to work up to it.
AUTUMN 2019 – MYSTIC REBEL MAGAZINE – 79

Sukhasana/Easy pose
From a comfortable seated position (sit on a cushion if needed) take some extra time for your meditation
practice and turn your focus inwards. Be aware of how your actions affect your wellbeing and
observe how your body changes with the seasons. Autumn is a great time to complete unfinished
projects and clear your home of unwanted items or energies to create a calm and restful sanctuary in
which to hibernate and reflect during the winter months.
Stay healthy, happy and joyful through the autumn season by including these postures in your practice!
Messages From
The Angels
Sue Owen brings a seasonal message
from Archangel Michael
Hello my friends, I hope this
finds you well and happy?
I am thrilled to have been
asked to write these angel
messages for you. I hope you
will enjoy them and take from
each one what feels right for
you and let go of anything
that does not.
I hope these angels’ messages
will help you in your
understanding of the angels
and how they can help you in
your everyday life.
The angels reside in the fifth
dimension but can transcend
through all the dimensions
to assist us in our connection
with Source energy. The
angels are very much here to
support us, guide us and love
us through our human journey.
Life can be full of challenges
but with the help of
the angels, we can navigate
those challenges with greater
ease.
As we gently step into the
autumn months, I felt it appropriate
to call upon Archangel
Michael (the guardian
of autumn) for our angel message.
I’m sure you are all familiar
with Archangel Michael but
let me give you some information
on this awesome
angel. His name means ‘He
who is like God’, meaning he
is extremely close to Source
energy. I like to think of him
as the captain. He is also reassuring,
protecting and pours
his wisdom into us through
our thoughts and feelings.
His main mission is to clear
lower energies, so he works
very closely with those who
are in service as well as healers
and therapists. As the
great protector, he helps
us to feel safe, especially
when facing situations that
are uncomfortable for us.
He reminds us to trust that
everything is happening just
as it needs to and to have
faith that things can be better
once we’ve travelled through
the difficult times.
The angels appear to us
through our thoughts and
feelings in a way that is right
those things that have no benefit for us. He
tells us to let go with love and to respect our
boundaries. To care and protect ourselves as
well as those we love.
He reminds us that he is always there for us, in
times of sadness as well as in times of celebration.
All we need to do is think of him and ask
him to come to us and help with whatever
we need. Know he will always respond in the
appropriate way. For instance, if you were asking
him to support you with a drug habit, he
would bring the right person and opportunity
to help release this unhealthy addiction.
for us. I once saw Archangel Michael looking
like a Greek god with long blonde hair, a
big shining chest plate and big fluffy wings.
I asked him why he looked like that. His response
was that it was simply my perception
of his energy.
What he helped me to understand is that the
angels will show themselves to each of us in
a way that sits right with us. So, you might
see them looking like humans with big fluffy
wings, balls of energy, colours or something
else entirely. You may not see them at all but
know they are with you. And, you may sense
them through sensations in your body like
a tickling feeling on your skin or hair or you
might simply have a knowing they are with
you. Trust what you’re getting and know the
angels want to connect and communicate
with you.
Michael’s message for us currently is a reminder
to let go of anything and anyone that
no longer serves our highest good. Just as the
trees let go of their leaves because they have
served their purpose, we too should release
He supports us too by showing us our life
purpose. Those who feel lost are often lacking
in their life purpose, having little or no focus.
Archangel Michael can help us to understand
our purpose so we can engage in life as we
should do and move forward with a happy
heart. Know Archangel Michael loves you
unconditionally for the wonderful person you
are.
I hope you find this message helpful and know
I send you love, light & angel blessings* ~
