Angela to run for paediatric diabetes YOUR TRUST CHARITY @SWBHCharity To donate to the Your Trust Charity text “SWBH16 £5” to 70070 Angela Ruiz Morales, medical secretary in the paediatric department is planning on pushing herself to absolute limits all in an effort to raise funds for the Your Trust Charity Paediatric Diabetes fund. Angela started her running journey back in February of this year when she joined her local running club and since then has really wanted to push herself. Angela Ruiz Morales and her husband Tony Sula preparing for the Simplyhealth Great Birmingham Run half marathon She said: “Since I started running at the start of the year, I really felt like I wanted to make a difference and what a better way to make an impact than to challenge myself to complete my first half marathon whilst dedicating my efforts to the paediatric diabetes team.” The vital funds will allow the paediatric team to continue to organise events for children with diabetes such as Christmas parties, bowling, woodlands adventure days and education sessions. She added: “I have had the pleasure of working with the wonderful team for the past two years and I feel proud to be part of team with such passion and care for their patients and their families which is why I want to help them any way I can.” Your Trust Charity has always been close to Angela’s heart having previously organised an array of fundraising events for them. Johnny Shah, Head of Your Trust Charity is urging all donate whatever they can to support this fantastic cause. He said: “We need everyone’s help so we can ensure that the children can continue to enjoy fantastic events in the future. We would be very grateful if you could donate anything you can spare as every little bit counts.” Angela will be running the Simplyhealth Great Birmingham Run half marathon on Sunday 13 October. Her husband, Tony Sula will also be running the marathon and his own company, T.S Plumbing & Heating have kindly offered to match the amount raised up to a maximum of £500. Thin Lizzy star honoured at place of birth More than 50 fans from across the globe came to Sandwell Hospital to watch the unveiling of a tribute to rock star Phil Lynott in the form of an emerald green plaque. The Thin Lizzy singer was honoured at the site, formerly known as Hallam Hospital, with H, the lead singer of cover band Dizzy Lizzy doing the honours. The plaque inscribed with the words “The boy is back in town. Phil Lynott 1949-1986. Musician, Poet, Songwriter. Born here Hallam Hospital” will be fitted at the entrance to the Antenatal Clinic. Sadly his mother Philomena, who was delighted to learn that the hospital intended to honour him, died on 6 June this year. Money for the plaque has been raised by the local community and singer H, along with writer Sean Meaney who spearheaded the campaign. Phil’s daughters, Sarah and Cathleen said ahead of the ceremony: “It is particularly poignant timing that his place of birth is being honoured in what would have been his 70th birthday year. “There was obviously something in the water at that time as Robert Plant was born on the same day in the same town a year earlier. We (left to right) H from Dizzy Lizzy with Non- Executive Director, Harjinder Kang, Chief Informatics Officer, Martin Sadler, Director of Midwifery, Helen Hurst and former journalist and campaigner Sean Meaney are really proud of all our dad achieved and are so grateful for this recognition and to everyone who keeps his memory alive.” Fans from Japan, Sweden, Scotland and Spain came to see the unveiling along with Trust colleagues and others who cheered when the tribute was unveiled. Helen Hurst, Director of Midwifery said: “It is very fitting that a plaque to honour Phil Lynott is here at his birth place. He was extremely talented and we are proud to be associated with Phil, who made a huge difference to the lives of so many through his music. It is CORPORATE AND GENERAL NEWS fantastic to know that Sandwell Hospital was the place of birth to one of the most iconic singers from the 70s and 80s.” Phil, who died aged 36, lived in Smethwick for a short time with his mother Philomena before she moved to Manchester. She finally returned with him to her native Ireland, where he spent the rest of his upbringing before he went on to form Thin Lizzy Sean, who was also at the event, added: “We lost Phil far too soon and it is sad that his mother wasn’t able to see this day. “Despite her failing health, the devoted 88-year-old had told friends it was her dream to travel back to West Bromwich one final time to see her late rock star son honoured in the place of his birth. She was very emotional and felt that life had now come full circle. “She sadly passed away just 10 weeks before the ceremony was due to take place. It has left us all shocked and tinged with sadness.” Laughter is the best medicine as FINCH celebrates ten years The Faecal Incontinence and Constipation Healthcare group – best known as FINCH, hit a major milestone this last month with the service celebrating ten years of assisting patients deal with some very lifechanging circumstances. To mark their decade as part of our organisation, the team banded together to host a special charity night, which was also held in memory of former patient Phil Stephens who passed away in February 2017. Taking place at Churchill’s bar in Wednesbury, over 100 patients, staff, friends and family got to enjoy performances from the venue’s resident DJ Spencer as well as and his partner, soul and Motown vocalist Helen James. The dance floor was full, drinks were flowing and a great night was had by all. Comedian and singer Jonny Cole was also on hand, resulting in a number of admissions to the bar suffering from teary eyes and split sides. Thanks to ticket sales, as well as a raffle that was also held and the generosity of those offering their services for free, £1,042 was raised during the night, which was opened by FINCH service lead nurse and former RCN Patient’s Choice winner Kelly Stackhouse, whose hard work and dedication has helped build the service to what it is today. “Patients expressed their joy at seeing us out of uniform and having a good time, and we felt the same about them,” FINCH’s Jodie Butler told <strong>Heartbeat</strong>. “It was humbling to know that not long ago they wouldn't have been able to partake in such an occasion, due to their bowels rendering them housebound. In the meantime we will continue our quest in breaking the taboo by talking about poo, with funds raised helping towards purchasing new equipment as well as publicising and promoting the service and treatments available.” The FINCH team as a whole would like to thank everyone that helped make the night a success and who has continued to show their support.
