a vast array of social<br />
activities and health programs<br />
for older adults,<br />
ranging from the weekly<br />
drop-in center where seniors<br />
can enjoy coffee<br />
and a snack while playing<br />
Bingo, cards and mingling<br />
with friends to larger annual<br />
events such as the<br />
Senior Dating Game, Senior<br />
American Idol and<br />
Dancing with the Senior<br />
Stars. Some of the Township’s<br />
regular social activities<br />
include monthly<br />
luncheons, dinner dances<br />
and trips.<br />
Orland Township is also<br />
committed to the well-being<br />
of local seniors and offers<br />
weekly classes to promote<br />
healthy lifestyles.<br />
Classes include yoga,<br />
strong and fit, tai chi,<br />
knitting, line dancing and<br />
computer courses, such as<br />
the Dakim BrainFitness<br />
class, which is designed<br />
to improve memory, focus<br />
and concentration among<br />
seniors.<br />
At the Township, seniors<br />
can also participate<br />
in valuable and convenient<br />
seminars, such as<br />
senior driver safety, Medicare<br />
information seminar,<br />
and CPR courses. The<br />
Senior Citizen Advisory<br />
Council allows seniors<br />
to work in part with the<br />
Township’s Supervisor<br />
and Board of Trustees to<br />
ensure the programs and<br />
services provided are both<br />
helpful and enjoyable for<br />
local older citizens.<br />
On Thursday, Nov. 21,<br />
the Township will host a<br />
free movie day. November’s<br />
pick for the monthly<br />
series is “The Upside.”<br />
The show starts at noon<br />
and popcorn will be<br />
served. Space is limited so<br />
reservations are required.<br />

Seniors interested in<br />
learning CPR may attend<br />
the Township’s CPR<br />
class Tuesday, Dec. 10 at<br />
1 p.m. There is no cost to<br />
attend, but registration is<br />

Residents are invited to<br />
join Orland Township for<br />
their annual Thanksgiving<br />
dinner on Tuesday, Nov.<br />
19 from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m.<br />
Winston’s Market is providing<br />
a holiday meal with<br />
all the trimmings: roasted<br />
turkey, stuffing, mashed<br />
potatoes with gravy along<br />
with sautéed carrots and<br />
cranberry sauce. And of<br />
course, Thanksgiving dinner<br />
is not complete without<br />
delicious pumpkin<br />
pie with whipped cream.<br />

On Friday Dec. 6 from<br />
4:30-9 p.m., seniors can<br />
join Orland Township for<br />
the Chicago Trolley Holiday<br />
Lights Tour. Residents<br />
will be whisked on a<br />
journey of dazzling lights<br />
and holiday sights including<br />
Zoo Lights at Lincoln<br />
Park Zoo, The Magnificent<br />
Mile, State Street and<br />
Macy’s Holiday windows.<br />
They will be caroling all<br />
the way to the Millennium<br />
Park and much more. A<br />
light snack of a sandwich,<br />
chips, cookies and a beverage<br />
will be served once<br />
everyone has boarded the<br />
trolley. This trip will surely<br />
get everyone into the<br />
holiday spirit.<br />
For seniors who are living<br />
a more isolated lifestyle,<br />
Orland Township<br />
offers many resources to<br />
try to get them connected.<br />
The Township’s transportation<br />
service offers frontdoor<br />
transportation to and<br />
from the Township and<br />
medical appointments.<br />
Orland Township also<br />
works in part with organizations<br />
such as PLOWS<br />
Council on Aging, who<br />
offer home checkups and<br />
services to get older citizens<br />
active in the community<br />
once again.<br />
