Industry insiders and consumers alike are nothing short of obsessed
Selena Gomez
Why
Korean
Beauty?
Koreans are some
of the most demanding beauty consumers
in the world. While sky-high
standards are taxing, they’re exactly what
keep the Korean beauty industry striving
to keep up.On top of that, Korean
consumers have a voracious appetite
for skincare, which in turn helps fund
extensive R&D. With thousands
of beauty brands all competing
for market share, the result is a
Hyper-competitive, incredibly innovative industry
that's at the forefront of the beauty world.
What's new in Korea?
If you think the Korean beauty craze is a passing
fad, think again. Korea is still at the top of
its game when it comes to clever—and effective—beauty
products. Just check out these innovations
that are about to make major waves
in the US.
Starting
trends!
Korean women are famed for their
sky-high beauty ideals and, unlike us
time-poor types, prize good skincare
over make-up quick fixes. This prevention-is-better-than-cure
approach
means the average Korean skincare
regime involves 12 steps and can take
up to 40 minutes each day. Korean
innovation has brought the concept
of skin-tertainment back to the serious
world of skincare. The K-beauty
regimes are not only super-effective
but have also brought some novelty
and fun back to our bathroom
routines (and Instagram feeds).
Girls’ Generation’s stylist caps
K-pop fashion industry over years
Seo Soo kyung
After over eight years of curating the looks of
K-pop fashion icon Girls’ Generation, stylist
Seo Soo-kyung is often called the ninth
member of the group for her family-like
bond and history with the members.
Stylist Seo Soo-kyung
Seo has evolved side by side with Girls’ Generation
to become a super-stylist who now has an
impressive portfolio highlighted by partnerships
with global stars Psy and SeventeenAs a leading
fashion expert who knows what’s in trend way
before anyone, Seo also creates her own social media content
series called “Soo’s Style.” Her sartorial opinions and
fashion tips for the public are highly acclaimed and inspire
aspiring stylists.Despite her success and fame, Seo highlighted
that structural problems in the industry are major
hindrances for those seeking to build a stylist career
in Korea. Seo emphasized that her goals is to pave the way
for a better working environment for younger stylists. She
will begin by educating junior stylists and communicating
with the public through the creation of fashion content.
Seo has been teaching students styling at Chungkang College
of Cultural Industries. When Seo first started working,
she wasn’t paid for her job either. It took her three months
to earn 300,000 won ($265) a month, she said. Having
been involved in the industry for 15 years, Seo has witnessed
how K-pop fashion has transformed over the years.
“Working with Girls’ Generation
made me realize how important
fashion was in the world of K-pop,
and I drew many overseas fans of
K-pop fashion all around the world.”
There’s no
right answer
in fashion
When it comes to K-pop idols, there’s truly no one
more stylish than G-Dragon. The lead singer of Big
Bang, one of the hottest boy groups of the past
decade, is a fashion icon in South Korea, a trend
pioneer one of the first to adopt gender-neutral styles.
Text: MIN EUN JUNG
Photo: HELENA CARTER
25 Saranag Asia July 2018
It’s no secret that when Western fashion
media encountered Korean pop star G-Dragon
back in 2012 during Paris Fashion Week, they
scrambled to take notes, no doubt intrigued by
the screaming fracas that followed him everywhere.
Designers were already more savvy, particularly
Jeremy Scott who’d forged strong ties
with girl group 2NE1 (also part of YG Entertainment,
who had created G-Dragon’s group, Big
Bang) and Hedi Slimane, whom G-Dragon had
been a fan of since the designer’s days at Dior.
His presence at fashion weeks was sporadic following
that Paris season, but by 2015, G-Dragon
had become a legitimate style icon not only in
luxury fashion but streetwear (where he is routinely
feted by Hypebeast and Complex) - a cool,
successful and self-assured figurehead for Korea’s
fast-rising presence in the fashion market.
He’d worked with LA’s Stampd and Italian shoe
designer, Giuseppe Zanotti, become close with Karl
Lagerfeld, and last year he released a Raf Simons/
Vetements inspired collaboration with Samsung’s
fast fashion label, 8 Seconds, and made the long-expected
move of creating his own label, PeaceMinusOne,
with long-time Big Bang stylist, Gee Eun.
Their collection was debuted over four days
in Paris at the end of last month at the Galerie
Frank Albaz where, Gee Eun says, “We planned
installations that told the story of the brand. I
also wanted to give people a chance to see our
products in person, as well as share our thoughts
and feelings of where the brand is coming from.”
Naturally, it included a solid after-party at Le
Pompon, which saw the likes of Bella Hadid, Olivier
Rousteing, G-Dragon’s close friend, model Soo
Joo Park, Keith Ape and the always eye-catching
99percentis designer, Bajowoo, partying through
the night. “I was always invited to events in Paris

Interview
Exclusive!
by my many friends and I wanted to be the one to give out
invitations this time,” Gee Eun elaborates. “When we were
going to have our first exhibition, I always wanted it to be
Paris.” Like many creative processes, it’s been a long road.
For G-Dragon, the affinity with clothing came young. “I
started out as a child actor,” he recalls. “Back then I didn’t
have a manager or company and I couldn’t even dream of
having a stylist, my mom made and bought the clothes I
would wear. I think that was probably when I first got into
fashion? Interestingly, when I look at pictures of me when
I was five or six years old, I think I look pretty stylish.”
Although Big Bang debuted on the Korean
music scene in 2006, back then neither it nor the
general landscape, could be called a fashion hotbed.
You’d find a few plaintive voices on streetwear
forums bemoaning the fakes, the mark ups
and sheer lack of stock and variety in Seoul (much
had to be bought from overseas, then sold on).
K-Pop groups wore either outlandish stage clothes
or looked like the average suburban American
teenager, and Big Bang were no different, sporting
keyring chains, vests and baseball caps worn sideways.
While it’s arguable how much influence he wields
over Korea’s wardrobe choices as a whole, he’s
in a prime position to watch its changes on a
large scale. “European style is classic with its own
colour and to me it always feels chic. I think
Korea is still a bit sensitive to trends, I’m not sure
if that’s necessarily good or bad but Europe, on
the other hand, is consistent in keeping true to its
own style.” And how does this impact on men’s
style in particular? “I think it’s getting more and
more free,” G-Dragon muses. “There’s a phenomenon
of the line and conflict between self-confidence
and embarrassment narrowing. There are times
even I am a bit embarrassed by my look. Don’t
be afraid. There is no right answer in fashion.”
"
There are times
by my
look. Don’t be afraid.
answer in fashion
Current fashion trends
from the Korean red carpet
Korean celebrities are known for their impeccable fashion, and their red carpet
looks inspire new trends in everyday wear. So what are your favorite
actors and actresses wearing lately?

Kim Sae Ron
Baek Jin Hee’s choice for the MBC Drama Awards
is an interesting example, where a simple, white
overlay creates a different neckline for the dress.
Shim Eung Kyung’s simple ponytail
perfectly matched her choice to
wear a jumpsuit instead of a dress.
Sleek ponytails!
But how are the women styling themselves to match these
fashion trends? Gone are the fancy updos of yesteryear.
Instead, many women showed up on the recent Baeksang
Awards red carpet with their hair flowing freely or pulled
back into a straight, sleek ponytail.
14-year-old actress Kim Sae
Ron is so young, but she always
impresses on the red carpet with
her fashionable, yet age-appropriate
attire. You’ll notice that in
addition to rocking the straight
ponytail, she has also incorporated
trends 5 and 6 into her look.
And, of course, a trend list
wouldn’t be complete without t,
whose ponytail just adds to her
flawless look for the event.
LEE
SUNMI
I was very worried that about whether people would
carry interest for "Solo Sunmi", instead of "Wonder
Girls' Sunmi".
But after the news was made known, there was a hot
response so I'm really thankful. I also felt that I have
a lot of responsibility.
Lee Sun-mi, known mononymously as Sunmi, is a
South Korean singer. She debuted in 2007 as a member
of SouthKorean girl group Wonder Girls and left the
group in January 2010 to pursue her academic career.
After three years hiatus from music scene, Sunmi resumed
her career as a soloist in August 2013 with her first digial
single."24 Hours". It peaked at number two on South
Korea's Gaon Digital Chart and number trhee on Billboard's
Korea K-Pop Hot 100. Her debut extended play,
Full Moon (2014), charted at number twelve and number
trhee on Billboard's Korea K-Pop Hot 100, also charted
at number thirteen on Billboard World Digital Chart.
In 2015, Wonder Girls returned to the music scene
after a two year hiatus with a new band formation,
Sunmi was also confirmed tobe re-joining the
group after her departure in 2010.The group later disbanded
in 2017 after Sunmi and Yeeun decided not
to renew their contracts with JYP Entertainment.
On March 14, 2017, it was announced that Sunmi had
signed with MakeUs Entertainment around the end of
February.Itwas later revealed thet Sunmi would release
a single on August 22, her first solo comeback in three
years. She released her single titled "Gashina". Sunmi then
returned with a new single titled "Heroine" on January 18,
2018. Sunmi described the single as a prequel to her previous
one "Gashina".With “Full Moon”, Sunmi grabbed the
number 1 spot on Inkigayo. Before the result came out,
she bit her cherry lips as she beat time and she burst out
into tears as soon as her number 1 ranking was revealed.
Many people were sad for her only being second place all
this time and she couldn’t forget to thank them. As she kept
crying, the other singers danced joyfully to “Full Moon”.
Sarang Asia
Interview!
Sarang: After 3 years and 7 months you've
returned to the entertainment world. What
did you do during that period of time?
Sunmi: For the first half of 2010, I returned
to Pohang and took the High School GED test,
preparing the fundamentals needed to entering University.
After studying hard, I was admitted to Dongguk
University School of Drama's 11th batch as a freshman.
I also made friends with other university students and
hung out a lot with them as well. During middle and
high school, I wasn't able to spend much time in school
so when I entered university, I was able to look at things
objectively and also ponder about the things that insufficient.
Right now I'm on a temporary absence from school.
Sarang: Have you been to a meeting? (Meeting is like group
dating with a group of single women and single guys organise
a meeting, with the objective of finding a dating partner)
Sunmi: Not even once. I have never heard suggesting
that idea to me before. When I just
started school my classmates and teachers
Because of the image I have on TV, when I just started
school my classmates and teachers was behaving with
discretion and they only felt that I was feminine. However,
after they found out about my free and easy personality,
even my male classmates think of me as their
male friends. haha. Oh, and when my classmates got
the news of my return as a solo artist, they sent many
supportive messages, so I'm really thankful for that.
Sarang:What was the reason for stopping as Wonder
Girls, when Wonder Girls was at it's peak?
Sunmi: I was 17/18 yrs old then. Wonder Girls was constantly
running breathlessly then. All of a sudden, the
dance and song that I liked so much, I just felt like a machine
doing repetitive work. Despite accomplishing my
dream of becoming a singer, I hated myself that was unable
to be thankful nor be modest about it. So I thought
that I had to take some time to look back on myself.
Up till now, I'm thankful to the Wonder Girls members
who have respected my decision. However, I never once
thought of stopping being a singer completely. Also, full
fledged training resumed in 2011. During that time I
worked hard to make up for the parts that I was lacking in.
I’m deeply surprised and grateful for all the
love ‘Gashina’ has been receiving. To tell the
truth, I didn’t expect the wave would continue
to this point,” said Sunmi during a press conference
and showcase for “Heroine” in Seoul.
“Heroine,” produced by renowned producer
team The Black Label, is a prequel to “Gashina,”
in which Sunmi played a heartbroken yet
revengeful woman hailing “Why are you leaving the pretty
me here.” The new single is a flashback to the “Gashina”
woman’s earlier days before turning into a thorny “finger
gun” shooter. In “Heroine,” Sunmi is featured as a woman
who finds herself growing cynical to withering love despite
her efforts to understand her retreating lover. The
singer also revealed that it was her idea to tell the backstory
of “Gashina” through “Heroine.” “If you listen to ‘Heroine,’
you will understand why that woman in ‘Gashina’ was
shooting a gun in madness. Some might have expected
‘Heroine’ would be about me bragging about myself, but it’s
actually about the man the woman loved,” she explained.
While “Gashina” was themed on red, a color of retribution
and fury, “Heroine” is themed on blue, a color for
coldness, the singer said. The two contrasting themes
are also well reflected in “Gashina” and “Heroine” teaser
photos, each showing roses blazing in fire and roses frozen
in ice, respectively. Retro-tinged “Heroine” apparently
veers away from her electronic-flavored hit, having
a more toned-down beat and melodies. Admitting to the
change, Sunmi opened up about the pressure coming from
“Gashina,” but standing firm with her decision to show diverse
aspects of herself through the new attempt “‘Heroine’
may lack impact compared to ‘Gashina,’ but I didn’t
want to revisit that ‘Gashina’ route. I wanted to showcase
new sides of me,” she said. The singer also said that she
has been working on a new project with The Black Label,
with plans to continue the cooperation with the team.
Oh Sehun
Sarang: What do you mostly think of at midnight?
Sehun: Everyone might not think the same but, worries
for my future, my expectations, my excitement, don’t
we all have thoughts like these? Thoughts of our lives.
Sarang: When and where is your favourite time n place?
Sehun: I like midnight. About 1 or 2AM. The very
midof night. I think the feeling of tranquility and silence
that one will only get at midnight suits me
well, and I also really like the feelings that I am only
able to feel at that time. I can also think more then.
As for my favourite place, I don’t really like being
cooped up. If I was locked up, I’ll become gloomy. Or
should I say that I get lost in my sadness. I have friends
whom I always go out with. Though I like being with
them indoors, I don’t really like it when I’m alone.
Sarang: Between something familiar and something
unfamiliar, which do you enjoy more?
Sehun: I enjoy unfamiliar things. We’re comfortable with
familiar things, aren’t we. But we have to adapt to unfamiliar
places. Just like how we have to follow the Roman
law when we go to Rome, I think the process of adapting
to a new place is fun. New people, new things, getting to
experience those kinds of things for the first time while
there will be many eye-opening and challenging things
too. That is why I think I can enjoy unfamiliar things more.
Sarang: Where do you think you will make
your home if you were to travel your entire life?
Sehun: I hope to have my home in Seoul. I think it
would be great if my ordinary day is in the city, living
with many people in a place where the air isn’t
good and then sometimes going to somewhere
that doesn’t have anyone and where the air is good.
Sarang: Then can you talk more about
then travel. But I like travelling whenever I feel like it.
" I’m looking forwa influencing others in
a positive way. My message is you can do
anything if you just put your mind to it.
I don’t ever plan it and I just go spontaneously. I won’t
even bring my clothes, I won’t even book a place, I will
just go carrying only my wallet. It’s fun going with my
friends and doing things there. I don’t know what will
happen but the people that I match well with all like that
kind of things. So I think our relationship will last for a
long time. If there is a baseball game when we get to a
rest stop, we’d do that and then leave, and when we get to
Daegu, we eat something. Those kind of unpredictable
trips. It makes you excited. When I see others making
plans for their trips, I also wish to do the same. I really
want to do that but I don’t follow my plans very well. Then
I think that will screw up the planning even more. So I
just travel comfortably with a “Okay, whatever!” mindset.
Sarang: How would you explain something that
you like because it’s been a long time with it,
and something that you like because it’s new?
Sehun: I think of new things as something that I get
to experience and be enlightened by. As for old things,
what I learn from them will become feelings and memories
and that way, I can remember them. To be specific,
it would be human relationships. I think relationships
are the most important in life. With humans, the
more you see each other, the more you become fond
of the other, don’t you? The process of getting close
with someone is fun. It’s the same with new things. If
you meet someone new, you will obviously have things
to learn from them, there will be things you get to
gain and on the other hand, you will have an influence
on that person. I think those kind of things are fun.
Sarang: If you were born into a family with 9 brothers,
which position would you like to be born as?
Sehun: The oldest one. Then I can take care of everyone.
There is joy in busily living in a tough life.
Of course I’d be extremely tired and I will need time
for myself. But still, if I lived like that, I’ll have things
to do and I think that having a life where you get to
take care of things will be satisfying and interesting.
Sarang: When do you feel that the day has gotten shorter?
Sehun: When I’m happy. When I’m playing with people
I love. Or when I go on trips. When I’m happy, I don’t
think of what was difficult, or something that I am agonising
over at that moment, or what I am stressed over,
so it seems like time is passing so quickly. When you’re
mysterious in that aspect. When we do something we like,
kind of mindset, we don’t have anything to wait upon and
we have something we want to do and we do it. And when
Sarang: What is the compass in your life?
Sehun: How should I explain this. If there is a road straight
forward or backward, and if there is a road on my left and
right as well as side roads, I will take the side roads. There
are pros and cons of side roads. Side roads are fresh and
they’re not complete. Also, there is something you can
experience from it. As with the common straight roads
ahead, because there are already many information on it,
I know that there might not be things I want to try experiencing.
However, as for the side roads, people who have
not gone through them don’t know what they hold. And
though it cannot be gauranteed, I might be able to be a
bit more comfortable and be able to go faster, and it will
be fun. The con is that there are many bends. Extremely
many. And if you’re not careful, you might end up at
the start and go the straight road ahead instead, you up
at the start and go the straight road ahead instead, you
might not keep walking the same road too. So you need
to be wise with your choice of roads. You’ll learn and experience
many things, I think you need to rely on and
go with people who make the the environment great. If
I can only handle being wise, I will be able to safely and
enjoyably cross that bend while living a dynamic life. I
think being an EXO member isn’t all straight roads and
within that, I want to have more dynamic experiences,
do a lot more, know more things, help the people around
me and learn from each other. I want to live that way.
Jennie Kim, known as Jennie, was born in Anyang, South
Jennie was born in Anyang, South Korea by the
New Zealand until returning in high school. When
she moved to Seoul, South Korea, she immediately became a
The new
powerfull woman
YG Entertainment’s “BLACKPINK”. Composed of the 4 members JISOO, JENNIE, LISA, and ROSÉ, they’ve
achieved overwhelming popularity not just in Korea and Japan, but the entirety of Asia. Previously, the girls first appeared
in the January 2017 issue and graced its cover. The strong impression of how they sold out the issue within
2 days, before even debuting in Japan, is probably still fresh. Those girls have finally made a comeback to NYLON
JAPAN! On our second meeting, the girls talked about the high expectations and unease they felt towards their
Japanese debut, and many episodes about the hard work they put in for their live performance in Japan. We bring
you once again, the charm of the even further improved, next generation girl crush group BLACKPINK!
Text: ROWEN LEE
Blackpink, which today releases
its first mini album “Square Up,” has become a sensation since
its first single “Boombayah” was released in August 2016. That song’s
music video has amassed 320 million views on YouTube, and is one of
the group’s three tracks to top Billboard’s world digital song downloads
chart — making them the most successful female act in K-pop history.
The group’s popularity is driven not only by its peppy electro-pop songs,
but also its stylistic prowess — which falls under Won’s direction. While
the stylist herself prefers classic looks, her work for Blackpink exhibits
a polar opposite, so brazen that it aims to further the fashion conversation.
Their look is a chaotic mix of what’s trending in luxury, novelty
and the underground — with a dose of cuteness for good measure.
“On a personal level, it’s my vision to create a really different idea
with their look to be at the epitome of women’s fashion in South
Korea — to create a new milestone,” Won said of the group’s style,
which has gone on to jump-start numerous trends in Korea.
While typical girl groups like the nine-member Twice often skew “feminine
and sweet,” in identical outfits, stylists has helped build an act known
for their unique looks. The group is more loved by people who follow
fashion. They are for an in-the-know girl. Groups like Twice are for the
general public, but Blackpink is more for people who appreciate style.
Four members,
four flavors
1Living up to their name, there’s a bit of a powerful edge to the quartet’s girlishness
with each of the four – Jennie, Ji Soo, Lisa and Rosé. All of them sing, but Jennie
and Lisa also serve as sharp-hitting rappers, while Rosé and Ji Soo offer more
feminine tones. The group’s members are all immensely stylish and have served as
models for numerous high-end fashion brands, with each of the women bringing
her own distinct vibe to the mix.
