The Parks & Recreation Department strives to make <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> a great place to live, visit, and recreate. One <strong>of</strong> the players <strong>in</strong> that effort is Brittany<br />

McDermott - Recreation Supervisor <strong>of</strong> Market<strong>in</strong>g. Based at the <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> Community Center, her job entails gett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation out to the public<br />

by promot<strong>in</strong>g all <strong>of</strong> the department’s activities, events, parks and trails. She also creates the activity guide from front to back that comes out three<br />

times per year, manages their social media accounts and designs graphics. She has a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science <strong>in</strong> Environmental Science and lives <strong>in</strong> <strong>Palm</strong><br />

<strong>Coast</strong> with her husband and 2-year-old German shepherd mix.<br />

Here are three fun facts about Brittany!<br />

• Worked at the St. August<strong>in</strong>e Alligator Farm as their Curator <strong>of</strong> Education before the city.<br />

• Favorite food is cheese! All k<strong>in</strong>ds. It makes any food better!<br />

• Has extensive environmental background and has released sea turtles <strong>in</strong>to the ocean, handled all k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> snakes, walked through a lagoon full<br />

<strong>of</strong> adult American alligators (some as large as 14 feet <strong>in</strong> length), and been <strong>in</strong> the same room as a K<strong>in</strong>g cobra.<br />

Chris DRIggerS<br />

Keep<strong>in</strong>g track <strong>of</strong> all utility parts may be a tall order for some – but not Chris Driggers. He is a pr<strong>of</strong>essional at organization and that’s a must-have<br />

skill <strong>in</strong> his job as Utility Inventory Specialist. He makes sure all parts are signed out and accounted for, orders and receives parts, <strong>in</strong>puts them <strong>in</strong> the<br />

system and places them <strong>in</strong> their proper home. He enjoys his job because it allows him to <strong>in</strong>teract with most employees <strong>in</strong> Utility. Chris has a class<br />

A CDL license and wastewater C license. He has lived <strong>in</strong> <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> for about 20 years and enjoys its proximity to the beach and local waterways.<br />

5K<br />

In <strong>2019</strong>, it’s estimated that among U.S. women<br />

and men there will be more than 268,<strong>00</strong>0 new<br />

cases <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>vasive breast cancer <strong>in</strong> women with<br />

more than 41,<strong>00</strong>0 <strong>of</strong> them result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> deaths<br />

and more than 2,6<strong>00</strong> new cases <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>vasive<br />

breast cancer <strong>in</strong> men with 5<strong>00</strong> breast cancer<br />

deaths. Hav<strong>in</strong>g the support <strong>of</strong> others is an<br />

important part <strong>of</strong> breast cancer survivorship.<br />

Research actually shows that tak<strong>in</strong>g part <strong>in</strong><br />

support groups, where you both give and<br />

receive help, is an effective way to reduce the<br />

stress and anxiety that can come with a breast<br />

cancer diagnosis.<br />

At 7:45 a.m. Sunday, a sea <strong>of</strong> p<strong>in</strong>k dashed from<br />

the start<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>e at AdventHealth <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> to<br />

raise awareness and money for breast cancer<br />

as part <strong>of</strong> the P<strong>in</strong>k Army 5K. The annual event<br />

happens <strong>in</strong> <strong>Oct</strong>ober – which is Breast Cancer<br />

Awareness Month.<br />

One-hundred percent <strong>of</strong> the proceeds raised<br />

by the P<strong>in</strong>k Army 5K go toward f<strong>in</strong>ancially<br />

support<strong>in</strong>g mammograms, breast ultrasounds,<br />

stereotactic breast biopsies, education and<br />

other specific diagnostic services to aid <strong>in</strong> the<br />

early detection <strong>of</strong> breast cancer here <strong>in</strong> Flagler<br />

County. The city <strong>of</strong> <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> staff is honored<br />

to partner with AdventHealth <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> to<br />

help organize the event – <strong>of</strong> which around 40<br />

cancer survivors were attend<strong>in</strong>g this year. The<br />

goal is to show support for survivors, those<br />

currently battl<strong>in</strong>g cancer and save lives.<br />

About 850 members <strong>of</strong> the community laced up<br />

their shoes to do their part <strong>in</strong> the 5K and 1 Mile<br />

Pet-Friendly Fun Walk. Awards were given to<br />

overall first place men and women runners, as<br />

well as to first, second and third place runners<br />

<strong>in</strong> 17 different age groups. There were 25 teams<br />

that signed up to participate.<br />

Last fall’s P<strong>in</strong>k Army 5K run/walk <strong>in</strong> 2018 was<br />

one <strong>of</strong> the most successful ever – rais<strong>in</strong>g $16,694<br />

for AdventHealth <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong>’s breast cancer<br />

fund. Over the years, more than $150,<strong>00</strong>0 has<br />

been distributed to underserved people, men<br />

and women, <strong>in</strong> our community. Together, we<br />

Fun Walk is hosted by AdventHealth <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> partnership with the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> and<br />

the AdventHealth <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> Foundation. It is<br />

also be<strong>in</strong>g presented by the Flagler/<strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong><br />

News-Tribune. Other partners <strong>in</strong>clude Flagler<br />

Schools, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office and<br />

PAL, the United Way Women United Flagler<br />

Chapter, <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> & the Flagler Beaches,<br />

Flagler Humane Society and the Flagler County<br />

Economic Opportunity Council.<br />

PHASE 2<br />

If you’ve been to Holland Park recently, you’ll<br />

notice changes are happen<strong>in</strong>g! These are<br />

excit<strong>in</strong>g changes on the horizon to make the<br />

park an even better recreational hot spot for<br />

families <strong>in</strong> <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong>. As part <strong>of</strong> phase 2 for<br />

the park, improvements <strong>in</strong>clude a new splash<br />

and play zone, LED light<strong>in</strong>g, improved bocce<br />

ball courts, extra shade cover<strong>in</strong>gs and more.<br />

This past week construction began <strong>in</strong> some<br />

areas such as the ma<strong>in</strong>tenance build<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

which had ro<strong>of</strong> trusses, sheath<strong>in</strong>g, peel and<br />

stick dry-<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>stalled as well as lightn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

protection. Additionally, <strong>in</strong> the pavilion 3<br />

restroom build<strong>in</strong>g, crews f<strong>in</strong>ished <strong>in</strong>stall<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g plumb<strong>in</strong>g fixtures and <strong>in</strong>stalled<br />

the toilet partitions. As a rem<strong>in</strong>der, only<br />

the areas be<strong>in</strong>g constructed will be closed<br />

<strong>of</strong>f to the public; all other areas <strong>of</strong> Holland<br />

Park will rema<strong>in</strong> open throughout phase 2<br />

improvements.<br />

The bocce ball courts were closed this past<br />

week and will rema<strong>in</strong> closed through February<br />

2020 so they can be demolished and replaced<br />

by state-<strong>of</strong>-the-art clay courts with a patented<br />

water<strong>in</strong>g system that will help keep the courts<br />

prist<strong>in</strong>e. The current playground will rema<strong>in</strong><br />

open throughout phase 2, but the section where<br />

the new splash pad is go<strong>in</strong>g will be completely<br />

closed <strong>of</strong>f for construction through July 2020.<br />

This will allow for excit<strong>in</strong>g additions like<br />

animal features, water sprayers, <strong>in</strong>teractive<br />

play equipment and more. The small dog park<br />

will rema<strong>in</strong> open, but portions might be blocked<br />

<strong>of</strong>f while a large concrete pad and pavilion is<br />

<strong>in</strong>stalled provid<strong>in</strong>g a nice shady spot to relax<br />

while your dog plays. Some park<strong>in</strong>g spots may<br />

be closed <strong>of</strong>f for construction access.<br />

Located at 18 Florida Park Drive, James F.<br />

Holland Memorial Park <strong>of</strong>fers 26 acres <strong>of</strong><br />

diverse recreational amenities. A 3/4-mile<br />

walk<strong>in</strong>g trail runs along the park’s perimeter.<br />

Explore the unique playground themed after<br />

the Bulow Plantation Sugar Mill complete<br />

with coqu<strong>in</strong>a rock structures featur<strong>in</strong>g slides,<br />

bridges and ladders, a climb<strong>in</strong>g wall, a zip l<strong>in</strong>e<br />

and an archeological digg<strong>in</strong>g area. This park<br />

is also the home to the <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> Historical<br />

Society headquarters where you can learn<br />

more about the history <strong>of</strong> <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> and the<br />

significance <strong>of</strong> the Bulow Plantation Sugar Mill.<br />

The facility also has three tennis courts, one<br />

junior-sized tennis court, two shuffleboard<br />

courts, two basketball courts, four striped<br />

pickleball courts, two horseshoe pits, a sand<br />

volleyball court and two large multi-purpose<br />

sports fields. The two baseball fields <strong>in</strong>clude<br />

bleacher shade cover<strong>in</strong>gs for added comfort.<br />

Firefighter Patrick Juliano is a driver eng<strong>in</strong>eer, advanced public <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>of</strong>ficer and above all else, a service to <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong>.<br />

The Flagler-<strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> Kiwanis Club has named <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> Driver Eng<strong>in</strong>eer Patrick Juliano its <strong>2019</strong> Firefighter <strong>of</strong> the Year.<br />

Juliano, a veteran firefighter with more than 17 years <strong>of</strong> service, jo<strong>in</strong>ed the <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> Fire Department <strong>in</strong> 2<strong>00</strong>6 as a Volunteer<br />

Firefighter. He was hired as a career firefighter <strong>in</strong> 2<strong>00</strong>8. After a brief hiatus <strong>in</strong> which he served two years as the Northeast Florida<br />

Regional Manager for Florida’s Chief F<strong>in</strong>ancial Officer and State Fire Marshal Jeff Atwater, he returned back to the <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> Fire<br />

Department <strong>in</strong> 2017. He was promoted to the rank <strong>of</strong> Driver Eng<strong>in</strong>eer <strong>in</strong> 2018 and is currently on the lieutenant’s list for future<br />

promotion.<br />

Juliano previously served with the Eastchester Volunteer Ambulance Corp <strong>in</strong> 2<strong>00</strong>1 <strong>in</strong> Eastchester, New York. He obta<strong>in</strong>ed his<br />

paramedic certification <strong>in</strong> 2<strong>00</strong>9 from Daytona State College and firefighter certifications <strong>in</strong> 2<strong>00</strong>7. He’s also earned a bachelor <strong>of</strong><br />

science <strong>in</strong> Public Adm<strong>in</strong>istration from Flagler College and a master’s degree <strong>in</strong> Public Adm<strong>in</strong>istration from Barry University. He is<br />

also certified as an Advanced Public Information Officer. He lives <strong>in</strong> <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> with his family.<br />

fire department command staff and our city<br />

communications and market<strong>in</strong>g division <strong>in</strong><br />

assur<strong>in</strong>g high-quality <strong>in</strong>formation is shared<br />

with our community,” said Fire Capta<strong>in</strong> Tom<br />

Ascone, who nom<strong>in</strong>ated Juliano for the award.<br />

“Patrick is <strong>in</strong>novative <strong>in</strong> ways <strong>of</strong> shar<strong>in</strong>g our<br />

messag<strong>in</strong>g, build<strong>in</strong>g our community reputation<br />

and ensur<strong>in</strong>g that our citizens receive the right<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation at the right time.”<br />

The Flagler-<strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> Kiwanis Club has been<br />

a local chapter <strong>of</strong> Kiwanis International for<br />

the past 40 years. This annual award is given<br />

to local firefighters dur<strong>in</strong>g National Fire<br />

Prevention <strong>Week</strong> to recognize them for their<br />

service, dedication and commitment to their<br />

communities. The award was presented by<br />

Kiwanis Chapter President Dr. Maria Barbosa,<br />

a Flagler County School Board Member, and<br />

Awards Chairman Frank Consent<strong>in</strong>o. Also<br />

attend<strong>in</strong>g the awards presentation were Capt.<br />

Ascone and Lt. Poeira.<br />

recognized. I along with my fellow brother<br />

and sister firefighters do our job not for the<br />

recognition, but for the love <strong>of</strong> service to our<br />

community.”<br />

Above and beyond his duties as a Driver Eng<strong>in</strong>eer, Juliano eagerly accepted the role as the Public Information Officer for the fire<br />

department. He coord<strong>in</strong>ates public communication, social media, public engagement and media <strong>in</strong>quiries. In times <strong>of</strong> emergencies,<br />

he is the lead communications <strong>of</strong>ficer for public messag<strong>in</strong>g. Additionally, he serves as Commander <strong>of</strong> the Fire Department Honor<br />

Guard and coord<strong>in</strong>ates the patriotic ceremonies at Heroes Memorial Park. Lastly, he was most recently elected President <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Firefighters Local 4807.<br />

Citizen’s<br />

Academy<br />

The Citizen’s Academy graduates were honored at the <strong>City</strong> Council bus<strong>in</strong>ess meet<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>Oct</strong>. 15.<br />

Twenty-three <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> residents graduated this month from the <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> Citizen’s Academy, a comprehensive program<br />

designed to educate <strong>in</strong>terested residents about the operation and work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> their city government.<br />

The graduat<strong>in</strong>g class – the 47th <strong>in</strong> the program’s history – spent five weeks learn<strong>in</strong>g about <strong>City</strong> departments and visit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>City</strong> Hall,<br />

the Community Center, ma<strong>in</strong> Fire Station 25 and Water Treatment Plant No. 3. The class also attended a <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>City</strong> Council<br />

meet<strong>in</strong>g together.<br />

The Citizen’s Academy kicked <strong>of</strong>f <strong>in</strong> September with the open<strong>in</strong>g session provid<strong>in</strong>g background on <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong>’s <strong>in</strong>corporation, <strong>City</strong><br />

Charter, the Council-Manager form <strong>of</strong> government and overall <strong>in</strong>formation about the <strong>City</strong>. Participants <strong>in</strong> the Citizen’s Academy<br />

received an overview on every <strong>City</strong> department and met <strong>City</strong> Council members, department directors and many other <strong>City</strong> employees.<br />

The Citizen’s Academy meets once a week, usually on Monday even<strong>in</strong>gs, for five straight weeks. The course is free, and registration<br />

is limited to about 30 <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> citizens per session. Students also eat d<strong>in</strong>ner together on the nights they meet.<br />

<strong>in</strong>cludes an overview <strong>of</strong> the <strong>City</strong> government and separate modules on each <strong>of</strong> the <strong>City</strong>’s departments.<br />
