It is my honour and delight to address the distinguished Alumni at
the 2019 Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Alumni Biennial
Lecture. Let me specially thank the FUTO Alumni President, Engr.
Ndubuisi Chijioke and other members of the National Executive of
the Alumni for organizing the 6th edition of the biennial lecture
series. I wish to acknowledge the presence of distinguished Nigerians
who have been invited to this auspicious event. I also recognize
the keynote speaker, Professor Ndubuisi Ekekwe who will lead
discussion on the theme “The Pursuit of Exponential Growth”. No
doubt, Professor Ekekwe is well-fitted for this assignment as his vast
academic and professional knowledge will be brought to the fore
as he dissects the theme.
The topic of this biennial lecture is timely and apt as various world
economies strategizes on ways to re-double growth through
innovative and productive thinking. In Nigeria, it is evident that the
traditional growth strategies are grossly inadequate in addressing
the daunting 21st century challenges. There is the need therefore
to begin conversation to align with current world trends and
realities that are centred on geometric growth. The snail pace
growth Nigeria had witnessed over the decades is grossly inadequate
to lift many out of poverty and properly place her on the
league of developed nations. As Nigeria’s population grows, there
is need to fast track technologies, innovation on how we grow
crops, add value to them and invent technologies to fight hunger
and live a modern life.
Therefore, conversation and discussions on best ways to think and
actualize big growth and development at this gathering is most
welcome and apt.
Ladies and gentlemen, the University Management under my
leadership is thinking out of the box with exponential growth in our
mindset. We just commenced the new School of Computing and
Information Technology (SCIT) that houses programmes like
Software Engineering, Cybersecurity and Information Technology.
Also, through our recent elevation as Africa Centre of Excellence in
Future Energies and Electrochemical Systems (ACE-FUELS), we will
soon begin a Masters degree programmes in Electrochemical
Technology, Future Energies, Nanotechnology and Corrosion
Technology.
On a practical level, we have commenced proper waste management
and recycling at a micro level but working hard to expand to
a large scale in the future.
As I end this address, let me thank the members of FUTO Alumni
for their support to the University and also invite them to partner
with the University so as to keep the brand ‘FUTO’ alive and
irresistible.
On behalf of the Governing Council, Senate, Management, staff
and students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, I
once more, thank the organisers of this lecture and wish you a
successful deliberation.

SPEAKER PROFILE
He has served in the United States National
Science Foundation Engineering Research
Center E&D Committee. Ekekwe is a
Co-Chairman of JPL Financial Group, a
California-based financial advisory firm which
syndicates capital for projects in Africa. While in
Analog Devices Corp, he worked in the team
that designed an accelerometer for the iPhone
and he created the company’s first wafer level
chip scale package for inertial sensors.

Review. He has to his name high ranking
publications and technical papers ranked
among the leading journals and conferences
about technology.
AWARDS AND RECOGNITION
Ndubuisi Ekekwe is a professor, inventor, engineer, author,
and entrepreneur. He is the founder and Chairman of First
Atlantic Semiconductors & Microelectronics, Fasmicro
Group – West Africa's leading embedded systems company.
Prof. Ekekwe obtained his first degree in 1998 from
Electrical/Electronic Engineering Department of Federal
University of Technology Owerri, where he emerged as his
class’ best student. He holds two doctoral and four master’s
degrees including PhD in electrical and computer
engineering from the Johns Hopkins University, USA.
Ekekwe holds professorships in Carnegie Mellon University
and Babcock University.
Ekekwe specialized in Microelectronics & Medical Robotics
Engineering. Some of his research work involved
manufacturing of integrated circuits with the application of
alternative energies, biomedical engineering, medical
robotics and neuromorphic engineering. Ekekwe invented
and patented a robotic system used in minimal invasive
medical robots. In 2017, the United States Government
acquired assignee rights to the technology.

I have to tell you that at this moment I am extremely excited
about this event yet am nervous and quite literally shaking in
my shoes. I would dearly love to be able to speak and to
hold an audience like the gentleman guest lecturer who
speaks with authority and holds any audience in awe at any
meeting
What I wish to say is based upon our lecture topic, "The
Pursuit of exponential development" and how, since 2006,
we have continued to engage the conversation on "Nigeria's
quest for development. The technological fast tracking". It is
not an argument that Nigeria needs to leapfrog her development.
What we usually argue is how we want to do so.
The approaches to deliver this development has come as
both opinions and statements of fact. Many people have
said we need to deploy technology appropriately. In other
considered opinions, we need to create a system that gets
every one and every part of the country working to contribute
something. And this is a thorny part of the discussion
called restructuring and governance models. As a school of
technology, we have set up this public lectures to discuss
interactions between science, technology and society in the
hope that the outcome of our conversations will be sneaked
into policy discussions and intents. .
And knowing who Prof. Ndubuisi Ekekwe is, We are sure
that this conversation will extend an interesting attention.
And when we look at the array of other speakers and
panelists, there is a strong confidence that authoritative
commentaries will emerge from this meeting.
In our own way, as an association, we have also attempted
to bring this home.
Some years ago now, I was privileged to have observed a
group of individuals who led this Alumni association with so
much passion. I was an apprentice! I saw the alumni association
develop into a great bloc of the university community.
The Association engaged the University management in
development efforts. Years after, we are still on this. We
continued to drive development among ourselves and such
that it should impact the University and the country.
In the light of these motivations, our thrust was to integrate
our members and grow everyone together. In working this
out, we considered that relevant programs and projects are
important. Therefore, we have the General meeting for
conversations; the TGIF for bonding; Alumni Dinner for
networking; The innovation Hub for ideas and startups;
Cooperative Society for crowdfunding; Medical Emergency
Insurance for safety; A Scorecard for performance and
reward system and more.
The objective of these programs is to create an integrated
economic and development approach for the Lagos
Chapter of the FUTO Alumni Association. It is to leap-frog
the growth of the Chapter and to create critical mass of new
and important followers whose energies will be harnessed
to support the university through the Alumni association.
This is an objective that need ruthless attention. It is also an
objective that need the wisdom of the elders and the
strength of the younger ones.
We will continue to do our best but we also need the
university community to begin to take action to leapfrog the
development of the university especially in the area of
deploying IT to solve problems such as transcripts. There is
no excuse not to make this happen. We have the people
who are ready to help.

Amb. Henry MACAULEY
CEO, EnergyAfric Developers LTD
Ambassador Henry Olufumi Macauley was the
Minister of Energy for the Government of Sierra
Leone. Amb. Macauley previously served as the
Sierra Leone High Commissioner to Nigeria.
He was also accredited to Cameroon, Equatorial
Guinea, Angola, Benin Republic, DRC, and
Central Africa Republic. In Fact, he was Sierra
Leone's Permanent Representative to ECOWAS
EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION
Henry Olufumi Macauley was born in 1962 in
Freetown, Sierra Leone. He was educated at the
Prince of Wales Secondary School and subsequently
earned a bachelor's degree with
Honours in Engineering at Fourah Bay College.
He also holds an MBA degree from Knightsbridge
University, in addition to a certificate in
the oil industry from the Oxford Princeton
Programme.
CAREER
Henry Macauley is a successful businessman
with expertise in oil industries in Sierra Leone
and Nigeria. He worked in France and the
United States for Partenaire Service a L’ Industrie
and Intraco Consultants Company before
returning to Sierra Leone and forming PANAF
Group Limited, which imported crude oil into
Sierra Leone. He also established Unipetrol
Limited in Sierra Leone, Petrotex in the Gambia,
and founded the Royal Marine and Spares
Limited, an oil servicing company.
Henry Macauley served as President of the
Sierra Leone Business Association. In 2008, he
was appointed to serve as Sierra Leone's High
Commissioner to Nigeria. After serving with
distinction in this role, he was appointed Minister
of Energy in 2014.
Henry Macauley is fluent in English, Portuguese,
Spanish and French.

Kingsley has also served as a consultant to
venture funds investing in early-stage
companies, and to policy makers on the
emerging Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS)
Traffic Management (UTM) ecosystem required
to enable UAS such as future package delivery
drones to safely and efficiently share airspace
with other low-flying air traffic. By
complementing a career anchored in industry
with strong engagement with academia and
public policy interests, he brings fresh insights
and perspectives to the challenge of leading
the development of technologies that keep our
societies safe.
Kingsley’s leadership and technical excellence
have been recognized through awards such

* Distinguished Engineering Award and LM’s
Innovator of the Year and Nova Award -
Lockheed Martin’s highest honour.
Kingsley Fregene is the Chief Engineer for Applied Research at
Lockheed Martin (LM), a global security and aerospace company,
where he oversees the development of a broad portfolio of
advanced technologies. He has made important contributions to
advancements in robotics, unmanned systems, and artificial
intelligence, including several technology firsts; two of these have
been displayed at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in
Washington D.C. He has also led teams drawn from industry,
academia and research organizations in pioneering new
technologies; from early self-driving car technology on the U.S.
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Urban
Challenge to an unconventional air vehicle that won American
Helicopter Society (AHS) forum’s best aircraft design award,
demonstrating the solution to a decades-old flight control
problem.
He was an Associate Professor Adjunct in Electrical & Systems
Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania and has held editorial
and leadership roles in the IEEE Robotics & Automation, and
Control Systems societies. He served 2 terms as Chair of the IEEE
Technical Committee on Aerospace Control, leading the activities
of IEEE members across the globe in advancing technology and
knowledge of the control of flight vehicles and aerospace systems.
Kingsley also served on the IEEE-USA's Committee on
Transportation and Aerospace Policy, contributing to the
formulation of sound legislation, regulations and policies affecting
aeronautics, astronautics and ground transportation technologies
in the U.S. He served on panels for the U.S. National Science
Foundation Engineering Research Centers and U.S. Chamber of
Commerce Digital Empowers: Accelerating Innovation for Business
and Social Good.
Kingsley holds 5 issued and 4 pending patents.
He has authored over 50 papers and book
chapters, including best paper award winners
at American Institute of Aeronautics &
Astronautics, and American Helicopter Society
forums. His paper on coordination among
self-driving vehicles made ScienceDirect’s list
of Top 25 Hottest Articles in the Engineering
Applications of Artificial Intelligence.
Kingsley is a highly engaged mentor to
up-and-coming professionals and an
enthusiastic volunteer for literacy and other
educational causes in the community. He is a
proud alumnus of FUTO, where he was found
worthy “...in character and learning…” to
receive a B.Eng. (first class honours) in
Electrical & Electronic Engineering. His Ph.D. is
in Electrical & Computer Engineering from the
University of Waterloo, Canada.

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you all to this 6th Biennial
Lecture of the FUTO Alumni Association.
Today’s lecture is aptly titled in ‘Pursuit of Exponential Development’
and will be delivered by our own outstanding scholar of international
repute, Professor Ndubuisi Ekekwe. The discussion on this title will be
extended with contributions from other eminent persons whose
pedigree and experience will ensure we leave here today with a clear
understanding of how we will pursue development exponentially.
To put the title of this lecture in context and perspective, I will say that
the key word will be “EXPONENTIAL”. We all agree that we are in dire
need of development in every sphere of our national life. We certainly
agree that the development deficits are too monumental that a
progressive development will not get us out of this quagmire except an
exponential development. The deficits in education, healthcare,
infrastructure, housing, security, etc, are overwhelming when
compared to where other countries are. None of these countries will
wait! The total effect of these deficits, sadly, is that Nigeria is recently
perceived and rated as the world’s poverty capital.
We certainly need exponential development to employ over 55% of our
youth that are currently unemployed or under-employed. We need
exponential development to accelerate the growth of our economy and
GDP growth rate from the paltry 1.94% for a population that is
growing at approximately 2.6%. Exponential growth will certainly
tamper our inflation that has occupied double digits (currently 11%)
place in the last few years.
Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, we urgently need exponential
development, otherwise, with a national life expectancy of 53 years,
the opportunity to experience the development in our time becomes a
concern.
Our guest speaker is an erudite and extraordinarily gifted Professor; he
has been schooled in the best of institutions around the world including
our own FUTO. He has met and associated with opinion leaders and
decision makers around the world. He sits on the board of foundations
and outstanding firms. And he has received the village boy educational
experience. Today, we are happy to have him share his thoughts on
how we can leapfrog our national development. And that is the reason
Prof. Ekekwe and other speakers and panelist of repute are discussing
how we can engage “the pursuits of exponential development” as we
continue to drive conversations and ideas on the “Nigeria’s quest for
development, the technological fast tracking”

their Public Affairs Intervention Projects in Mobil core communities until

Ndubuisi Chijioke is the current CEO of Jimcol Resources Nigeria
Limited, an indigenous Oil Service company specializing in the
provision of Advanced NDT/Inspection Services and Drilling Support
Services.
Over the last 13 years, he has been responsible for the strategic growth
of the company resulting in the company’s current standing as an
industry leader in Advanced NDT/Inspection Services with the highest
number of NDT professionals and equipment assets deployed within
the country. The Drilling Support Service division of the company
currently supports the ongoing major drilling campaigns by Shell
Petroleum Development Company and ExxonMobil with her advanced
Mudlogging & Pore Pressure Services.
Ndubuisi graduated from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri
in 1992 from the Department of Civil Engineering and later obtained
an MBA (Oil & Gas) from Robert Gordon University, United Kingdom.
He has also undertaken several Executive Management Programs with
the Lagos Business School. Currently, he is the National President of
FUTO Alumni Association.

Dr. Sam Amadi resumed office as the Nigerian
Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC)
Chairman and CEO.
Dr. Amadi has obtained various degrees from

Engr. Kashim Abdul Ali is a Registered Civil
Engineer with post-graduation training in
Highways, Water Resources, Administration,

He Is the Olimene Ata Igala and Galadiman
Ankpa. Among other recognitions.
He was born on 10th June 1958 in Ofugo –
Ankpa, Kogi State to Alhaji Abdullahi and
Hajiya Maryam Ali, both late. He had his early
tutelage under his grandfather, a traditional
ruler, whose memory he holds dearly.
He served in the positions of Director/Chief
Executive Officer of the FCT Water Board,
Member of the FCT Executive Committee,
Special Adviser (Utilities), Director (Technical
Services) of the Abuja Infrastructure Investment
Centre, Director, Transportation and presently,
Chairman of the FCT Water Board.
He is a member of notable Associations locally
and internationally including but not limited to

He joined the Federal Capital Development

Prior to joining Nestoil, Lynda worked with

& Gas Industries.
Lynda later joined MainOne Cable Company

Rex Mafiana as the CEO of FPG Technologies
Ltd is charged with overall responsibility of its
strategy formulation, performance monitoring,
and continuous improvement to bring about
flexible solutions that drive extreme business
agility and long-term customer success. His
leadership has seen the company breaking all
bounds and exceeding results right from its first
year of operation. Under Rex’s leadership,
FPG has become the foremost leader in IT
security and Cyber defence in Nigeria with
clients spanning all sectors of the Nigerian
market.
Before FPG, Rex was the West Africa District
Manager of NetApp Inc., a US based company
(Fortune 500, S&P 500, Nasdaq 100 – NTAP),
where as part of the global leadership team, he
built the West African team and business to the
number 1 market share position in west Africa,
a rare feat considering that the parent company
was no2 and 3 in most other places at the time.
Before NetApp, Rex was the West African Sales
manager for IBM (S&P100, Fortune 100,
Nasdaq 100) STG where again he made sure
that IBM retained a lion share of the Server
market especially in the Banks. Prior to moving
to IBM, Rex served for about seven years with
Computer Warehouse Limited one of the
foremost indigenous Information Technology

business, leaving in 2006 as a Senior Manager.
Rex has gathered over 19 years of Information
Technology experience and over ten of which
was spent in challenging (and rewarding)
Senior Management positions. Rex is a

Emeka Vitalis NWACHUKWU (Chief)
Emeka Vitals Nwachukwu (Chief) is an
Industrialist with a degree in Industrial
Chemistry from the Federal University of
Technology, Owerri (FUTO) in 1989 and a PGD
in Information Technology for business
decisions from the University of Lagos. He had
his National Youth Service Corp with Shell
Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) in
1990.
He had a brief stint with Power Holdings
Company of Nigeria formerly National Electric
Power Authority (NEPA). However, his
professional career started in 1991 when he
joined V.I.P Industries Limited (maker of
Topklass brands of cosmetics) as a Production
Manager and rose to the post of Assistant
General Manager (AGM).
His passion to become a professional
entrepreneur compelled him to leave V.I.P in the
year 2001 to float Evick Ventures Limited (with
Series as a brand name) a medium sized local
cosmetics manufacturing company where he is
the Chief Operating Officer.
Apart from Evick Ventures Limited, he sits on the
board of the following companies: Ebie
Ventures Limited, Q.Med Diagnostics Centre,
Quantum Aromatic (W.A.) Ltd. amongst others.

Andrew have had a total of Thirty (30) years’
professional experience in the Oil and Gas
Industry (1988-2018) with the last
Twenty-Seven (27) years in ExxonMobil
Upstream Company. During this period, he
had variety of assignments across Exploration,
Development, and Production functions –
Seismic Acquisition, Processing, Integrated
Seismic Interpretations, Sequence Stratigraphic
Mapping and Correlation, Subsurface
Mapping and Reservoir Characterization,
Assessments, Reservoir Surveillance and
Monitoring, and Upstream Nigeria Business
Planning. He presently oversees the
management of Nigeria’s Geoscience
workforce in ExxonMobil Upstream Nigeria.

Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria Limited.
He obtained his Bachelor of Science (Second
Class Upper Division) in Applied Geophysics
from department of Geology from Federal
University of Technology Owerri in 1987. He is
presently the General Manager, Exploration,
Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria
Limited (EEPNL), a subsidiary of ExxonMobil Oil
Corporation with head office in Lagos. He is a
fellow of both the Nigerian Association of
Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) and Nigerian
Mining and Geoscience Society (NMGS), in
addition to being an American Association of
Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Certified
Petroleum Geophysicist (CPG). He is the current
President of NAPE, an International Association
for Oil and Gas Practitioners and Professionals,
and Academia. Andrew was awarded an
honorary PhD degree (Doctor of Technology) by
the Federal University of Technology Owerri
(FUTO) in April 2018. Andrew completed his
Master of Business Administration (MBA, Upper
Credit) from Enugu State University of Science
and Technology in 1999.
In his current position as General Manager,
Exploration, Esso Exploration and Production
Nigeria Limited (EEPNL) since January 2015,
Andrew provides the necessary leadership for
Nigeria JV and Deepwater Exploration
activities, in addition to being a member of
ExxonMobil Nigeria Extended Leadership
Council. He is responsible for the training and
mentoring and overall performance of the
technical and management bench strength of
all Geoscience staff in Nigeria. He champions

Marcel AMU
Mr. Amu, Marcel Ogbonna was born in August 9,
1963 at Aku, Igbo-Etiti Local Govt Area of Enugu
State. He holds the prestigious traditional Ozor
title of Ugoeze in Akutara Enu Autonomous
community of Aku town. Mr Amu attended St.
James’ Primary School, Aku and the famous St.
Teresa’s College Nsukka (formerly University High
School, Nsukka) He obtained a B.Sc Hons in
Applied Geophysics from the Federal University of
Technology, Owerri in 1987 and an MBA in 2000
from the University of Benin.
He did his national Service at NNPC, E&P Division
in 1987/88 service year. He joined NNPC as a
field Geophysicist in 1989 where he worked at
various times as Seismic Data Acquisition
Geophysicist, Seismologist, Chief Seismologist,
Asst Party Chief, Deputy Manager, Planning and
Project Monitoring and Deputy Manager,
Geophysics. He is currently the Manager,
Exploration Joint Venture Oil Operations at
National Petroleum Investment Management
Services, NAPIMS (a subsidiary of NNPC) where
he oversees all Exploration activities in the
fourteen Joint Venture Companies of the Oil and
Gas industry in Nigeria. Mr. Amu is a recipient of
NNPC GMD’s award for his outstanding
performance in NNPC Management
Development Programme.

Kingsley Ukwuoma is a Chartered Certified
Accountant with the Association of Chartered
Certified Accountants (ACCA), and holds a B.
Tech. degree from the Department of Foods
Science and Technology, Federal University of
Technology Owerri, FUTO.
He has worked in different industries as an
accountant and as a project team lead in all the
companies he has served , Kingsley has over
16 years industry experience as a banker and
accountant and more than 11 years experience
as a lecturer and trainer.
He started his career as a banker with United
Bank for Africa Plc and later moved to Ecobank
Nigeria Ltd and years later as an Accounting
lecturer for the ACCA and ICAN qualifications
and is mostly recognized in the Banking and
Audit industries as he has trained many
Chartered Accountants and supported them on
their way to the top of their careers. He also
trained students who went ahead and win
ACCA global prizes in Management
Accounting and other papers in the ACCA
qualification.
