RESIDENT FEATURE By Bruce Deckert • Photos by Amy Geigner Additional photos supplied by family THE DANIELE FAMILY In the midst of a busy and bustling schedule — with a focus on competitive swimming — the Daniele family appreciates the small-town peace and quiet of Granby. Anna and Tony Daniele moved to town in 2006 when their oldest son Alessandro (Alex), was 8 Swim Family Dives Into Granby’s Community Life months old. Since then, they’ve welcomed another son, Luca, and a daughter, Francesca (Frankie). Why did they choose Granby? “We wanted to live in a quiet town with excellent schools,” Anna says. “We were also looking for privacy and a picturesque setting.” 4 | OCTOBER 2019
Granby, of course, fit the bill. “I love the rural feel and the privacy we have while being so close to the center of town,” she says. “I love the fact that, in Granby, we have the natural beauty of a rural setting but it’s only a short drive to get to great restaurants and all the necessities.” Anna, 43, grew up in a small town in Poland, where she was born, and moved to Canada in 1989. She lived in Toronto, so she has experienced big-city life too. A company transfer brought her to Connecticut in 1999. “In Granby, I get the beauty of a small town and a sense of community without feeling far from fun experiences and amenities,” she says. Tony, 49, was born and raised in Springfield, Mass., and moved to Connecticut in 2000. “I love our quiet cul-de-sac street that feels private and secluded and yet is close to town,” he says. “The small-town feel, concerts at Salmon Brook Park, and access to nature.” Alex, 14, is a freshman at Granby Memorial High School. Luca, 11, is in 6th grade at Granby Memorial Middle School. Frankie, 3, attends Creative Learning Preschool in Granby. Anna and Tony met on a blind date in 2000. They married in June 2004, living in Manchester before moving to Granby in ’06. Tony coaches the Farmington Valley Tsunamis Swim Team, a YMCA and USA Swimming program. Alex and Luca are on the team. “I love our quiet culde-sac street that feels private and secluded and yet is close to town.” — Tony Daniele “I have been a coach there for the past three years and have enjoyed watching my boys and the swim kids grow up and grow in the sport,” says Tony, who swam competitively in high school and college. “Our team includes kids from all around the Valley, not just Granby, and that swim family feels like a special community.” Alex has qualified for Connecticut’s USA Swimming Championship, has earned medals at the New England YMCA Championship, and has made Connecticut’s USA Swimming top-16 list in three events. At school, science is his favorite subject. “The best parts of school,” Alex says, “are the science experiments and having my friends around from year to year.” Luca is modeling his older brother, reaching the New England YMCA Championship and qualifying this summer for the state’s USA Swimming Championship. Luca says his favorite part of school is “seeing my friends during the day, because swimming keeps me busy during the evenings and many weekends … and I love science, learning about different animals and doing experiments.” Meanwhile, Frankie says, “I can’t wait to go to kindergarten next year!” She loves her preschool friends, the library and (of course) swimming. “Swimming is a huge part of our lives,” Anna says. “It takes up most of our free time, with both boys being competitive swimmers, Tony coaching, and Frankie and CONTINUED ON PAGE 6 I driving the ‘swim taxi’ back and forth to the pool.” Fittingly, Anna has done research on sports nutrition for adolescent athletes. She is the owner of Manageable Pieces LLC, which provides nutrition consulting and education services. Anna specializes in classes and programs that emphasize an individualized, nondiet approach to healthy eating that “reflects the complexity of our relationship with food,” she says. She hopes that the school system will adjust the middle school schedule with an eye toward nutrition: “Snack time being eliminated starting in middle school comes at the worst possible time, especially for athletes who have additional energy needs.
