GUY FAWKES NIGHT 2019
The Gunpowder Plot of 1605, in earlier centuries often called the
Gunpowder Treason Plot, was a failed assassination attempt against King
James I of England and VI of Scotland by a group of provincial English
Catholics led by Robert Catesby. The plan was to blow up the House of
Lords during the State Opening of England's Parliament on 5 November
1605, as the prelude to a popular revolt during which James's nine-yearold
daughter, Princess Elizabeth, was to be installed as the Catholic Head
of State. Today, the foiled plot is commemorated with firework displays all
over London on and around 5 November.
Guy Fawkes’ Night is traditionally followed by the Lord Mayor’s Show,
this year’s procession is on Saturday 9 November, and the annual
Remembrance Day service which will be held on Sunday 10 November
at the Cenotaph in Whitehall to honour the servicemen and women
who sacrificed their lives for their country.
ENGLISH SCHOOLS’ ORCHESTRA
CELEBRATE 25 YEARS
This year marks a double celebration
for the English Schools' Orchestra – a
gathering of gifted young musicians from
across the country who, for 25 years have
played their annual concert with all the
polish and bravura of a proven
professional orchestra. As the highlight of
their Silver Jubilee Concert on Sunday
3 November at Cadogan Hall (15.00),
virtuoso Isata Kanneh-Mason, 23, will
perform Clara Schumann's piano
concerto. 2019 also marks the 200th birth
anniversary of Isata's under sung musical
heroine, Clara Schumann. Schumann's
concerto is perfect for the programme as
she started it when she was just 13, the
same age as the youngest of this year's ESO
instrumentalists. For many people,
schools music is synonymous with a
dusty assembly hall where parents
enthusiastically applaud a decentenough
rendition of Fur Elise or the
piping of reception year's recorders.
Such music has a rightful place and its
own sweet charm. But the English
Schools' Orchestra soars far above the
stereotype: it's a sparkling showcase for
what inspired school students can
achieve, despite the pressure of exams
and only a week to rehearse in the
October half term.
Over the years, the ESO's playbook
has included Verdi's Requiem, Bach and
Hindemith, Mahler and Gershwin. Their
playing reflects more than a specialist
skill and a finely tuned ear. As the
orchestra's founding President Lord
Lingfield says,'I do believe that music
develops the soul. At a time when the
number of school orchestras is
diminishing throughout the country, the
English Schools' Orchestra is not only
flourishing but recruiting superb young
musicians who are as talented as ever.
It is a particular joy to know that many
of our players have gone on during the
past twenty-five years to professional
musical careers and that a group of
alumni gives their time to tutor the
orchestra of today. It has been a quarter
of a century of hard work, but when I
listen to the magnificent concerts that
they play, I know that it has been
entirely worth it.'
HALLOWEEN TREATS AT ZSL
LONDON ZOO
Lemurs, pygmy hippos and tigers
have all got into the Halloween spirit, as
ZSL London Zoo counts down to a week
of fiendish family fun during October
half-term. While kids all over the country
prepare for the spookiest night of the
year, Sumatran tiger Asim sunk his paws
into a giant ghoulish gourd, rolling
around a 42kg pumpkin before enjoying
a meaty feast hidden inside.
Joining in the festive fun were the
Zoo’s spirited group of ring-tailed
lemurs, named after the ghosts of
Roman mythology, who had their own
carved creation for breakfast – while
pygmy hippo Nicky chomped her way
through a multi-coloured pumpkin
patch, forming a very spooky assault
course. Autumn half-term fun at the zoo
STAVROS DITSIOS : N A T U R A
AT J/M GALLERY
Stavros Ditsios was born in
Thessaloniki, Greece in 1978, which is
where he lives and works. The artist
studied painting in the Academy of Fine
Arts of Florence (1997-2001) and,
amongst his tutors, was Professor
Umberto Borella.
Stavros’ large-scale works are
characterised by overlapping surfaces in
mixed media and there is a clear
influence of abstract expressionism.
Social activism is a key part of Stavros’
work as he comments on political,
economic and social issues, each body
of work organised around a new theme
with the overall aim of reflecting on
critical issues.
His latest series, Natura, on show in
London this autumn focus on the beauty
of nature in the era of climate change.
His live action painting of a Greek
sunset is captured on video, and the aim
is to witness and marvel at the beauty of
nature and realise what is under threat.
Many of Stavros Ditsios’ paintings are
held in the Museum of Vorre, Athens, in
the Greek Ministries of Justice and
Internal Affairs as well as key private
collections. His extensive exhibition
history includes exhibitions at the
Museum of Art and Science Milan last
year and the State Museum for
Contemporary Art in Thessalonki in
2017 and at the London Art Biennale
earlier this year. Natura is one of a new
series of exhibitions in London of work
of contemporary Greek artists,
introduced by the Greek business
woman and politician Varvara Roza.
She says: ‘Stavros’ passion means that
he creates awareness of critical issues
through his work, inspiring, work moves
constantly in new directions, brave,
conveys his feelings bringing together
critical issues and emotional reaction,
making personal public issues.’
The exhibition will be on view at the
J/M Gallery, Portobello Road from
6-22 November. For further details,
Brighton Festival Chorus.
FAURÉ REQUIEM & TAVENER
INVOCATIONS AND LAST WORD
Brighton Festival Chorus is to present
a Sunday afternoon concert on
3 November (15.00) in the wonderful
baroque surroundings of St John’s Smith
Square. Now in its 304th year, this
majestic building is one of London’s
thriving concert halls and continues to
resound with beautiful music in a serene
city setting.
BFC Music Director, James Morgan,
says: ‘Our two headline pieces are
separated by a century but share a
common theme of calm, meditative
spirituality. Fauré’s Requiem needs little
introduction, while we bring to London
for the first time Sir John Tavener’s
Invocations and Last Word, which
received its UK premiere earlier this
summer when we performed it in
Brighton. This work utilises massive
choral forces positioned in the four
corners of the building to create an
overwhelming ‘surround’ sound and
epitomises Tavener’s rare ability to make
music accessible to all.’
These two magnificent pieces are
complemented by motets by Messiaen,
Villette, Fauré and Coulais’s beautiful work
Caresse sur l’ocean from the Oscar
nominated film ‘Les Choristes for which
the Chorus are joined by the Brighton
Festival Youth Choir.
Known for its versatility, BFC performs
not only the standard choral repertoire but
also new works, commissions and
collaborations with popular music artists.
2019 has seen the Chorus record an
opera created by rock legend Pete
Townshend with the Royal Philharmonic
Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios, join
together with the Brighton Festival Youth
Choir for a performance of Britten’s
St. Nicolas and close the Brighton Festival
with a moving performance of Tippett’s
A Child of our Time. Upcoming
performances include two Christmas
Concerts in the Royal Festival Hall and
Brighton Dome and Great Choral Classics
in the Royal Albert Hall in April 2020.
The Music Director will be James
Morgan, with the music provided by the
London Concert Orchestra. The baritone
part will be sung by Jonathan Brown. The
concert will be performed by both the
Brighton Festival Chorus and the Brighton
Festival Youth Choir.
LONDON CONCERT CHOIR
PERFORMS PURCELL
On Thursday 7 November at Cadogan
Hall, London Concert Choir (celebrating its
60th anniversary this season) and
conductor Mark Forkgen are to present a
concert performance of King Arthur, the
dramatic masterpiece by Henry Purcell, one
of the greatest English composers. His
colourful ‘semi-opera’ about the conflict
between King Arthur’s Britons and the
heathen Saxon invaders was composed in
1691 to a text by the poet John Dryden.
In this performance of the music from
the opera, soloists and chorus will take on
the roles of good and evil magicians,
mythical and supernatural beings, as well
as soldiers, amorous shepherds, drunken
peasants and the inhabitants of a frozen
land. The complete work included a play,
but this will be replaced by two narrators.
They will outline the plot, which bears no
relation to the legends of Camelot but
mainly concerns King Arthur's attempts to
rescue his fiancée, the blind Cornish
Princess Emmeline, from the clutches of
his arch-enemy, the Saxon King Oswald
of Kent. Purcell’s glorious music
eloquently conveys the full range of
emotions and the work ends in celebration
of a united country and the triumph of
love, honour and peace.
Tickets are available from the box office
on 020 7730 4500 and also online at
EARTH & SKY: THE CHORAL MUSIC
OF RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS
The Chapel Choir of the Royal
Hospital Chelsea will perform the choral
music of Ralph Vaughan Williams on
6 November at 19.00 in the Wren Chapel
at Royal Hospital Chelsea. Benjamin
Newlove will play the organ, and William
Vann will be the conductor.
The composer Ralph Vaughan
Williams was one of the most influential
voices in English 20th-century music:
his writing encompassed operas, ballets,
chamber music, secular and religious
vocal pieces and nine symphonies.
Last year saw the release by the
Chapel Choir of the Royal Hospital
Chelsea of two discs of his choral music
to extensive critical acclaim. The Chapel
Choir’s annual autumn concert
showcases some of the highlights of
those recordings, including several
which were world premieres, alongside
his sumptuous Mass in G minor, Valiant
for Truth and two works written for the
1953 Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II:
O Taste and See and The Old 100th.
This performance, in the beautiful
setting of the Royal Hospital’s Wren
Chapel, promises to be unmissable.
‘First-class personnel... it’s the tension
and subtlety in the performances that
catch the ear’ (Gramophone on the Royal
Hospital Choir). Interval refreshments
will be served in the Great Hall. All
tickets include a glass of wine or soft
drink in the interval.
The Chapel Choir is one of the most
esteemed professional church choirs in
the UK and regularly sing with many of
the world's leading consort groups such
as The Sixteen, Tallis Scholars, Stile
Antico and Monteverdi Choir and also
work in the fields of opera, conducting,
teaching and music journalism. The
twelve singers are chosen specifically for
their choral singing, solo ability and
general musicianship. The choir's
regular concerts at the Royal Hospital
are always popular sell-outs.
WIMBLEDON CHORAL SOCIETY
PERFORM CARMINA BURANA
The latest spectacular concert from
Wimbledon Choral Society, ‘one of the
most substantial and formidable choirs in
London’, will take place in the elegant
surroundings of Cadogan Hall in Sloane
Square on Saturday 2 November (19.30).
Top of the bill is Carmina Burana, by
20th century German composer Carl
Orff, a rumbustious, rollercoaster ride
through the pleasures and pitfalls of life
in all its glory and misery. From love
and rejection to drinking, gluttony and
gambling, the texts may be medieval but
the themes are universal and thoroughly
up to date. From the monumental
opening chorus ‘O Fortuna’, the wheel of
Fortune spins dizzily towards the
inevitable climax.
Wimbledon Choral Society has a
well-deserved reputation as a top
London choir, under its inspirational
music director, Neil Ferris. It won
widespread critical acclaim earlier this
year for its performance at the Royal
Festival Hall of the world premiere of top
British choral composer Cecilia
McDowall’s Da Vinci Requiem, marking
the 500th anniversary of the death of
Leonardo da Vinci.
‘The Wimbledon Choral Society were
magnificent. Nothing seemed out of
place – the women angelic, the men
monastic – the intonation and timing
exquisite. Neil Ferris controlled the
chorus, soloists and Philharmonia
impeccably.’ – Opera Today.
Ferris is much in demand as a
professional choral conductor, at home
and internationally. He made his
Proms conducting debut in August,
with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and
BBC Symphony Chorus, of which he is
Chorus Master. On Saturday he joins the
choir fresh from his latest series of
conducting masterclasses in Singapore
and China.
Wimbledon Choral Society are joined
for Carmina Burana by one of the top
youth choirs in the world, Farnham Youth
Choir. FYC and their conductor Joanna
Tomlinson triumphed at the European
Choir Games in Gothenburg, Sweden
earlier this year, taking two gold medals.
They will also perform highlights from
their medal-winning repertoire.
The stellar artistic line-up also
includes Australian soprano Helena Dix,
who took Melbourne by storm in
September in the role of Norma at
Melbourne Opera House, as well as the
celebrated award-winning ensemble,
CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED MUSICAL
AMELIE TRANSFERS TO WEST END
Amélie The Musical, based on the
much-loved, five-time Oscar®nominated
film, will transfer to the West
End this Christmas following its current
UK tour, and its sell-out season premiere
at the Watermill in Newbury in April.
Starring French-Canadian stage and
screen star Audrey Brisson as ‘Amélie
Poulain’, this story of an imaginative and
shy romantic with a gift for helping
others, in a vibrant re-conception with
new orchestrations, will play at
The Other Palace in London from
29 November – 1 February.
improvises small, but extraordinary acts of
kindness that bring happiness to those
around her. But when a chance at love
comes her way, Amélie realises that to find
her own contentment she’ll have to risk
everything and say what’s in her heart.
Although times are hard for dreamers,
A MUSICAL LUNCH HOUR – LMP AT
ST JOHN’S SMITH SQUARE
Visitors needing a relaxing lunch
hour with some gorgeous classical
music shouldn’t miss the London Mozart
Players’ next concert in their Piano
Explored series, on 6 November at 13.05
at St John’s Smith Square. In a whistlestop
hour, acclaimed pianist Howard
Shelley takes the audience through an
insightful deconstruction of a major
piano concerto, followed by a full
performance of the work from London
Mozart Players directed by Howard from
the piano. November’s concert
showcases the work of Felix
Mendelssohn, with Howard discussing
and performing his dazzling Second
Piano Concerto.
Written in the year of his marriage,
Mendelssohn’s acclaimed second
concerto for piano is packed with his
trademark dramatic themes, breathless
energy and heart-melting moments of
reflective calm. Above all, it showcases
the virtuosic possibilities of the piano to
its fullest and, in Howard Shelley’s
hands, the concerto becomes a veritable
tour de force. This is a wonderful
opportunity to hear one of the great
interpreters of early Romantic piano
music performing it alongside the UK’s
longest established chamber orchestra.
Whether visiting London for pleasure,
working in Westminster or travelling in
from further afield, the LMP Piano
Explored series is truly ‘the best lunchbreak
you’ve ever had’ (International
Piano). Tickets are available from
CHRISTMAS WITH THE CHOIR OF
WESTMINSTER CATHEDRAL
The Choir of Westminster Cathedral is
recognised as one of the finest in the
world, and since 1901 it has occupied a
unique and enviable position at the
forefront of English church music, famous
both for its distinctive continental sound
as well as its repertoire. The Choir has
made regular recordings since its
foundation and continues to do so today,
with recent releases including a disc of
music by John Sheppard (released 2017)
and Alonso Lobo’s Lamentations (released
2016), all available on the prestigious
Hyperion label.
Comprising up to 25 boy trebles and
altos aged 8-13 and ten professional Lay
Clerks, the Choir remains the only
Catholic Cathedral choir in the world to
sing daily Mass and Vespers, whilst also
performing concerts at home and abroad,
from Europe to the USA. This busy
schedule naturally keeps the choir in high
demand for concerts, tours and
recordings, alongside its daily
commitment to the liturgy.
Every Christmas the choir sings its
famous Christmas Celebration concerts,
accompanied by orchestra and conducted
by Martin Baker, Master of Music, at which
visitors can hear this stunning choir and
also test their own lung power by joining in
with the audience carols, all accompanied
by full orchestra and organ. The darkened,
incense-filled Cathedral glimmers with
hundreds of candles and rings to the
sound of over a thousand people singing
together to celebrate the Christmas story.
Celebrity readers add their voices, giving
Christmas readings from the Bible, as well
as seasonal poetry and prose.
Visitors can head to the concert to hear
this world-class ensemble singing the
most beautiful, atmospheric Christmas
music by candlelight in Westminster
Cathedral to kick-start the Christmas
festivities. The same concert is performed
MOVING TO MARS AT THE DESIGN
MUSEUM
Moving to Mars, a new exhibition
running at the Design Museum until
23 February, explores the concept of
human travel to Mars as a frontier for
design as well as science. The exhibition
considers how design plays a huge role in
the journey, clothing, food and shelter on
arrival and beyond. There are over 200
original objects from NASA, ESA, SpaceX,
and others in addition to new
commissions from responsible design
company RÆBURN, Anna Talvi and
Konstantin Grcic. Young visitors (8+) will
have the opportunity to take on their very
own Mars mission with design briefs
devised by specialists including European
Space Agency astronaut Tim Peake.
The exhibition is in five sections
beginning with ‘Imagining Mars’,
revealing the many ways we have looked
at Mars from the first maps by Giovanni
Schiaparelli through to science fiction
and popular culture. This section
includes a full-scale prototype of the
European Space Agency’s ExoMars rover
and a stunning multisensory installation
‘On Mars Today’ where visitors are able
to explore the hostile environment of
the planet. The scent ‘Utopia Planitiah’
has been created especially by French
perfumery Firmenich, adding a rare
dimension to the experience which
together with textured flooring and
surrounding screens immerses visitors
in the Red Planet while never leaving
Kensington.
The ‘Voyage’ contrasts NASA food
trays with Galina Balashova’s designs for
Russian space interiors from 1964 to
1980 and Raymond Loewy’s work for
space stations. An NDX-1 spacesuit
designed by University of North Dakota
for the Mars surface is being exhibited
for the first time.
The next section ‘Survival’ provides a
chance to enter a stunning full-scale
habitat designed by London architecture
firm Hassell as part of NASA’s 3D-
Printed Habitat Challenge. The habitat
will be equipped with clothing from
RÆBURN’s Spring/Summer New Horizon
collection with pieces RÆMADE from
solar blankets and parachutes, inspired
by the make do and mend approach on
Mars. This section also investigates
farming on Mars, displaying hydroponic
farming kits and Spirulina-growing
systems.
The latter sections contemplates the
whole concept with a new installation by
Dr. Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg imagining
‘wilding Mars’ by just sending plant life,
closing with the question of ‘Should we
go to Mars?’
[BLANK] Donmar Theatre
Forty years ago, two prison inmates
founded Clean Break which has
continued working to bring the hidden
stories of female prisoners to a wider
audience and transform the lives of the
women themselves. This co-production
with the Donmar reunites them with
playwright Alice Birch who has provided
a door-stopping script of over five
hundred pages comprising one hundred
scenes from which the producing
company is instructed to not only
choose as many or as few as it wishes
(director Maria Aberg’s compelling
production selects some twenty odd) but
also to re-order and repeat scenes and
allocate names to the characters in order
to construct its own narrative.
This approach is bound to leave one
wondering what has been left out, and
some sections prove more successful
than others. But in just under two
interval-free hours, an impressive allfemale
cast (which includes two young
girls) disturbingly conveys the impact
that falling foul of the criminal justice
system, poverty and abuse can have -
not only on the women themselves but
also on their children and their own
parents.
In the longest section, a group of
professional middle class friends (the
actresses use their own first names)
gathers round the lavishly spread table
to eat and take delivery of coke and
crates of wine – only lawyer Kate’s new
girlfriend seemingly aware that, in other
circumstances, this would be much
more than a superficially consequencefree
recreational indulgence. In the brief
scene which follows, a tiny child
determinedly shatters their pure white
crockery with a sledge hammer. A
mother refuses to give her daughter any
more cash, even though she knows
she’ll probably resort to prostitution to
feed her addiction. Later, a pregnant
daughter confronts the mother she
cannot forgive for being absent,
incarcerated, whilst she was growing up.
One sometimes longs for a narrative
arc among these vignettes, but Birch’s
recurring themes make it abundantly
clear that taking responsibility, though
possible, is often a far from easy option
in a chaotic life.
WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION
AT COUNTY HALL
This month, Witness for the
Prosecution celebrates its 2nd birthday
at London’s County Hall. Director Lucy
Bailey thrillingly places the audience in
the thick of the action or observing from
the Press Gallery, as Agatha Christie’s
gripping tale of justice, passion and
betrayal unfolds around them.
From 17 November, the production
will welcome new cast members
including Taz Skylar as the accused
Leonard Vole, Alexandra Guelff in the
role of Romaine Vole and Jo Stone-
Fewings as Sir Wilfrid Robarts QC.
As the production enters its 3rd year,
over 260,000 people have borne witness
to this gripping courtroom drama and
the case of Leonard Vole, accused of
murder in cold blood. The twists and
turns of the case are played out as
prosecution battles defence and
witnesses take the stand to give their
shocking testimonies.
Leonard Vole is accused of murdering
a widow to inherit her wealth. The stakes
are high. Will he be able to convince the
jury of his innocence and escape the
hangman’s noose?
Witness for the Prosecution has
KAIZEN HOUSE PRESENTS: MEI MEI
This November, Elizabeth Haigh of
Kaizen House is to launch her new
project, Mei Mei, a Singaporean food
stall specialising in Hainanese chicken
rice and Singaporean Nanyang Kopi,
within London’s renowned food market’s
new development, Borough Market
Kitchen.
Mei Mei, the younger sister of Kaizen
House, draws inspiration from
Elizabeth’s South East Asian heritage, as
well as her home of London, and brings
to life the hustle and bustle of
Singapore’s Kopi Tiams of her childhood
memories. Counter-top dining, an openplan
kitchen, plus grab and go options,
mirror the kinetic energy of the all-day
coffee stops commonplace in Singapore.
On the menu, Hainanese chicken rice
using Ginger Pig Yorkshire chickens and
all-natural, fresh ingredients sourced
directly from Borough Market, takes
pride of place.
Other dishes will include some of
Elizabeth’s signatures like the Ox cheek
Rendang curry, Nasi lemak, a Malaysian
breakfast staple consisting of coconut
rice, fried egg, peanuts and cucumber
with a spicy sweet sambal oelak (chilli
sauce) made in house, and a hearty,
uncomplicated ‘Captain’s Curry’ using
100-day old chickens from Ginger Pig
braised in a mixture of spices, onion and
potato. Vegetarian and vegan options
will be available alongside daily specials
with produce sourced from the market.
Most of all, Mei Mei will be the go-to
for coffee, serving their own range of
Singaporean Nanyang Kopi, a rich and
smooth blend with dark cacao and burnt
toffee notes, served in all Kopi Tiams.
