Foreword The Toddler Quality Toolkit has been designed by Bath & North East Somerset Early Years Service in response to the government’s agenda to provide free childcare places for our least advantaged 2 year olds. The documentation has been shared with early years practitioners from a variety of settings across Bath & North East Somerset, through a working party in which practitioners shared practice and trialled some of the tools. This Toddler Quality Toolkit fits securely within the Children’s Service vision in Bath & North East Somerset in that: We want all children and young people to enjoy childhood and to be well prepared for adult life. This toolkit will support you to develop high-quality provision for every child in your care. “Research* shows that it is high-quality provision that really makes a difference for children, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Children who experience high-quality early years provision have better social and emotional development and capacity to learn – qualities that are crucial for school and adulthood. The research also shows that poor quality provision has no impact and for some children may even have a negative effect on some aspects of their development.” *Effective Provision of Pre-school Education (EPPE) Ashley Ayre Strategic Director for People and Communities The significance of early development is now well established and with the increase in provision for two year olds, early years practitioners need to ensure their practice addresses the particular needs of this age group. This excellent Toolkit provides a helpful and valuable framework for practitioners to review current provision and build optimal quality practice for two year olds. The holistic and flexible framework, filled with practical activities, resources and insights, adheres to the EYFS curriculum but also reflects recent research from the social, cognitive and affective neurosciences that has enhanced our understanding of young children’s growth and development. For example, our brains are social organs and require sensitive attunement to ensure the stresses of living and learning are tolerated through the support of responsive adults. The Toolkit does well to emphasise the importance of well-being and focuses on helping practitioners to fine tune their practice and create stable, nurturing and stimulating learning environments for 2 year olds. It also does well to accommodate young children’s need to be active agents in their own development. This toolkit will enable early years practitioners to strive for the very best for the 2 year olds in their care.
