Special People’s Field Day
By Cynthia Whitty
Sponsored by the Ashland/
Hopkinton council (Bishop Rice
Council #4822) of the Knights
of Columbus, the Special People’s
Field Day is an annual event
that brings together members of
the special needs community for
a day of fun. The day includes
sports activities, horse rides, fire
engine demos, a barbeque lunch,
ice cream, and giveaway shirts
and award medals.
This year’s event was held
on Sept. 29 at the Ashland Fish
and Game Club, which generously
donates the field each year.
Thanks to Alec Levine of the
Hopkinton Special Olympics,
there were nearly 15 “special”
athletes who participated in the
day’s activities. Going on concurrently
were a number of kickball,
softball, Frisbee, and beanbag
toss games. Brother Knight
Dan Norton, Hopkinton Center
School Physical Education
instructor and Hopkinton High
School Lacrosse coach, led the
activities with the support of his
lacrosse team. Pony rides brought
smiles to the faces of those who
saddled up. Athletes got to tour
two fire engines, brought by the
Ashland Fire Department. After
a barbeque and ice cream truck,
each athlete was presented a
