Come Learn TV Production with Award-Winning HCAT!
HCAT Receives National Award for “Heartbeat of Holliston”
By J.D. O’Gara
They’re busy covering all the
news in town, but did you know
your own Holliston Cable Access
Television (HCAT) recently
won an award? In July, Melissa
Kaspern, of HCAT traveled to
Portland, OR, for the Hometown
Media Festival, where they
accepted the Hometown Media
Award in the news magazine
show category on behalf of
HCAT’s monthly magazine news
show, “The Heartbeat of Holliston”
from the Alliance for Community
Media (ACM).
“That’s our national organization,”
says Don Cronin, HCAT
Production Manager, who explains
that August was the mark
of the show’s seventh season. “It
covers local news, events, and
happenings, with a lot of resident
profiles and in-studio guests.”
“The Heartbeat of Holliston” includes
pre-taped segments, which
Cronin says are called “packages.”
“Mary Greendale actually
started the show, and Chryso
Lawless took over from Mary
Greendale. Both are on our current
board of directors,” says
Cronin. “Chryso writes the script
and has all the stories the anchors
are reading. I have a separate column
on the script, the director
column.” Other volunteer crew
members include Tom Cady, Bill
George, Bill Binette, Christian
Buday, Melissa Kaspern, Paul
Saulnier, Deborah Moore, Brian
Winston, Jay Wyman. Also, staff
members are: Bruce Gilfoy, Lisa
Hedrick, Chris McKnerney.
A specific episode of the show
(6:3, which means, 6th season,
3rd episode) won the award for
Best of Informational Talk Show
Series Access Center Professional.
The story featured “a woman
from Holliston who had donated
part of her kidneys to a friend’s
mother, who needed a kidney
transplant,” explains Cronin,
who points out that folks can
see the episode at HCAT’s website,
www.hcattv.org, where all of
HCAT’s videos are available on
demand. HCAT also has a presence
on Facebook, Twitter and
Instagram.
Cronin who’s been with
HCAT nine years, has a lot of
TV production experience, and
he wants to emphasize that Holliston
residents can come in and
learn aspects of directing, producing
and editing shows, all for
free.
“My training is all hands on,”
says Cronin. “We’re able to offer
training on everything offered
in the studio.” Cronin says the
majority of folks want to learn
to operate the portable cameras.
Cronin explains that trained
community members “could produce
their own show, or become
qualified to tape segments for
“Heartbeat of Holliston.” Cronin
will teach setup and operation of
the camera “in terms of framing
camera shots, testing audio levels,
connecting the microphones, the
white balance in the camera, and
of course, the recording process,”
he says. It takes about an hour
and a half, to learn to set it up
and break it down, and he’ll do a
mock interview where his student
will run the operation. Afterward,
he’ll critique it.
“It’s hands-on, practical experience
in every aspect of production,”
says Cronin, who adds that
training times are flexible to meet
the trainees’ schedules.
Cronin says he hopes people
in the community will not only
find this free training valuable,
but that they’ll consider honing
and refreshing those skills by
volunteering on HCAT shows.
“Our role is to train people on
how to use this equipment,” says
Cronin. “And then it’s up to them
to produce shows that are of general
interest to Holliston. With
‘Heartbeat of Holliston’ and
‘Just Thinking,’ we have anchors
that help out that we rotate, but
we have a shortage of reporters,
people who can find stories. It’s
a volunteer operation, and we
would love to have people come
in, even from home, or look at
different (news) sources, related
to school, town hall—not just
hard news, but we’ve interviewed
people who have a unique skill
or talent. (That type of story) is
custom made for ‘Heartbeat of
Holliston.’”
The experience is great for
students who will attend or have
it received in the news magazine show category for “Heartbeat of
Don Cronin.
attended school for journalism.
“Sure, you can get an internship
(at a larger TV station),”
says Cronin. “But they’re going
to have you making photocopies
of scripts. To get hands-on experience
at this level is extremely
valuable in terms of shooting and
directing and editing.” Students
under 18, however, must get a
permission form signed by their
parents or guardians that allow
them to use the equipment.
Volunteers, says Cronin, “can
volunteer on as many shows as
they want,” he says. “It might be
two hours a month. Others like to
keep their skills updated.”
At the end of October, as it
does every year, HCAT held a
special reception at Restaurant
45 to thank its volunteers. If you
are interested in learning to use
Heating your home can be
an expensive endeavor, but for
more people this year, a local
fuel assistance program run by
SMOC, (South Middlesex Opportunity
Council, www.smoc.
org), can help.
Kate Fennyery, MA LSW,
social worker for the outreach
department at the Medway Senior
Center, wants to spread the
word about the program. Fennyery
wants to highlight that the
income guidelines to qualify for
fuel assistance have gone up this
year. If you didn’t qualify last
year, you might qualify this year.
“That’s a big deal in terms of
helping much more people,” says
Fennyery, who says the program is
not just for Medway residents, but
for residents of all 37 towns served
by SMOC. In fact, in addition to
the 74 households that received a
total of $65,815.93 in assistance
in Medway in Fiscal Year 2019,
the program helped 61 households
($55,418.51) in Millis, 80
households ($65,941.03) in Holliston,
76 households in Hopedale
($79,718.38), 196 households
($127,860.15) in Ashland and
310 households ($231,297.15) in
Natick.
“We know there’s more out
there (that need help),” says
Fennyery, who’d like to see more
people take advantage of the
program. “We need more people
to realize that they can be
helped, and the income limit has
gone up quite a bit.”
Residents who are in danger
of being evicted from their
homes or have recently lost
housing in their town can apply
for assistance directly through
SMOC, she says. “Even if you
have an apartment, and your
heat is included in your rent,
you can still qualify for this,”
says Fennyery.
To qualify for the program
this year, household annual income
for those in towns served
by SMOC (South Middlesex
Opportunity Council, www.
smoc.org) must be below the
yearly income limits of:
• $37,360 for one-member
households
• $48,855 for two-member
households
• $60,351 for three-member
households
• $71,846 for four-member
households
• $83,341 for five-member
households*
*These limits are subject to
change.
Amanda Foster, fuel assistance
program director for
SMOC, explains that typically,
town senior centers conduct intakes.
In smaller towns, including
Medway, Millis, Holliston
and Hopedale, the local council
on aging or senior centers welcome
applicants of ANY AGE
whose incomes qualify them for
assistance, and for towns like
Ashland and Natick, there are
resources beyond the senior centers
for younger age groups. All
“You can call, and we will let
you know what documents to
pull together to bring,” says Fennyery,
“which saves everybody a
lot of time.”
“The fuel assistance program
is a federally funded program,”
says Foster. “We have a contract
with the Department of Housing
and Community Development.
They administer our funds,
which are federally sourced.”
Applications for the program
are accepted from November 1 st
until April 30 th , and eligibility is
determined annually. If a client
is eligible, SMOC notifies their
primary heating source vendor
and utility company, which opens
the possibility of a discount rate
for that year with the company.
SMOC payments are made directly
Foster adds that if residents
qualify for fuel assistance, they
likely qualify for another program
SMOC runs, the SMOC
Weatherization program, which
has run since 1972.
“It’s an excellent program,”
says Foster. “We’re helping people
to stay warm in the wintertime
but also to make sure they’re
homes are running efficiently. It’s
similar to the Mass Save program
in making sure their appliances
are running efficiently, and things
like that, so it’s part of our intake
procedure. We ask if they’re interested
and notify the Weatherization
Department at SMOC
if someone is approved. Then,
assessors look at their property.”
At no cost to clients, says Foster,
the weatherization program
will provide insulation and even
appliances such as refrigerators,
washers, dryers and windowunit
air conditioners. “It’s really
to make their benefit assistance
stretch further,” says Foster. A
home that receives full weatherization
should save approximately
20% on annual heating
and electric costs.
Local House Cleaner
Partners with Nonprofit to
Help Cancer Patients
By J.D. O’Gara
“We’ve given to charity, written
a check,” says Juliana Rocha,
owner of CleanlyPro Maid Service,
“but when I saw this, I was
so excited. I could be part of it
as a business owner, but my staff
could be part of it as well.”
The Holliston-based cleaning
company, established in 2006,
has begun to take its philanthropic
efforts a step further this
year, teaming up with Cleaning
For A Reason, an international
nonprofit serving cancer patients
through free house cleanings.
Rocha got the idea from a colleague
in Georgia.
“I went out there to visit his
business, and he has this beautiful
poster on the wall, with a tally
of how many free cleanings he’s
provided for cancer patients,”
says Rocha. “He has over 200
marks on that wall. That was the
first time I’d heard of Cleaning
For A Reason.”
Shortly afterward, Rocha
met the founder of the nonprofit
organization, Debbie Sardone.
“When I got to hear her story,
it became more personal,” says
Rocha.
So far, CleanlyPro has done
about a half dozen free cleanings,
matched up through the
nonprofit with a patient in need.
Rocha pays her seven employees
the same rate they normally get
for their services, but the cost is
a company donation. The cleaners,
she says, enjoy taking part.
“They are going into these
people’s homes, so they get to
see them and are very moved by
this. They’re very excited to be
part of it. For years, we’ve given
to charity, but it’s never been
so personal to them. We were
moved by the opportunity to
help cancer patients during such
trying times. We are excited to
bring smiles to people’s faces and
Your Money, Your Independence
Tax Loss Harvesting: Be Thankful & Mindful
Time to give thanks for family,
health, pumpkin pie and finding
tax losses in portfolios.
How can you be thankful
for selling something at a loss?
Through a strategy called taxloss
harvesting, losing investments
can offset realized profits
as well as up to $3,000 in noninvestment
income each year.
While IRS doesn’t reference
“tax-loss harvesting”, there are
plenty of rules for the strategy
and need to mindful Form 8949,
Schedule D and these items:
Know your cost basis. Unless
entire investment was purchased
at a single time without dividend
reinvestment, then the price is
varied. Good news is firms record
cost basis and make available
online to view before taking
action.
Short-term and long-term capital
gains. Short-term is sale of investment
owned one year or less
and taxed at your ordinary income
rate (up to 37%); long-term
is sale of investment held more
than one year and taxed at either
0%, 15%, or 20% for 2019.
Short-term losses are deducted
against short-term gains,
next long-term against longterm,
then remaining net losses
of either type can be deducted
against the other. If still more
losses, can deduct up to $3,000
against income. Still more? Then
carry to subsequent years against
capital gains and/or $3,000 of
income.
Avoid a wash sale. A realized
loss is disallowed if, within 30
days of selling the investment (either
before or after) you or your
spouse invests in something that
Charles River Bank Begins
Annual Holiday Food Drive
A long-standing holiday tradition
at Charles River Bank is
the annual Food Drive. Every
year during the months of November
and December, Charles
River Bank branch offices set
up donation tables in their lobbies
for customers, community
members, and bank staff
to make food donations to the
Medway, Bellingham and Mendon
Food Pantries. The donations
are brought to the food
pantries just before the New
Year to help restock after the
holidays.
Items most needed by the
Food Panties include: canned
meats, soups, stews; dry
foods such as cereal and pasta;
other non-perishable food
items; paper goods, diapers and
personal hygiene items. Bring
is identical or “substantially similar”
to the one you sold. This is
across accounts as well, meaning
if you sell something in taxable
brokerage and buy it in an IRA,
you can’t use the realized loss.
Value of rebalancing. Have
a diversified portfolio based on
your risk level and goals in 2009,
2013 or even to start this year
and practiced “buy-and-hold”?
It’s out of whack. Rebalance
back to your target allocation,
or at some point economic and
market cycles unmercifully will.
More to consider beyond this
limited space, including the role
of your tax bracket, how to redeploy
cash to good use and opportunity
costs.
tax professional or Certified Financial
Annual Holiday Stroll
Crafts will take place all day long at the Holliston Public Library, at
752 Washington Street, while right behind it, in the parking lot of the
Grapevine, Mike the Balloon man will perform from 2-4 p.m.
Families with small children might want to linger in that lot right
around 3 p.m., because at 3:15 p.m., with the help of the Holliston Fire
Department, the Jolly Old Elf himself will take time out of his busy pre-
Christmas schedule to visit with the children of Holliston. As he does
each year, Santa will read the children the well-loved ‘Twas the Night
Before Christmas, by Clement Clarke Moore.
As strollers make their way through town, they’ll want to stop at the
many businesses decking their halls and offering specials to make the
night memorable. Some of the fun local purveyors have in store include:
• All Day Activities at Aesop’s Fable from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
• Product testing & Music at Arcadian Farms from 1-3 p.m.
• Sampling at the Candy Cottage from 11-6 p.m.
• Face Painting and Thinking Putty Party at Fiske’s, from 1-4 p.m.
• A Raffle for a FREE Granite Birdbath at Granite Landscapes, all day
• Henry Studios, Photos with Santa from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. (at St.
Mary’s)
• 25% Off All Sales at Holliston Antiques
• Free Ear Piercing with Purchase of Piercing Studs at Holliston Jewelers,
11 a.m.-6 p.m.
• Free Pretzels (while supplies last) at Holliston Superette
• Honey and Beeswax items by Little Beehive Farm (at Town Hall)
• Raffle All Day, Henna Tattoo at Soul Spirit Studio, 12-4 p.m.
• Letters to Santa’s Mailbox at Twice Upon a Time
• Cookie Decorating with Vesta Real Estate Group, 12-4 p.m.
Don’t get started too late, or you’ll miss the treelighting
ceremony at Blair Square, where the Boy
Scouts will be serving up s’mores to the hungry
crowd from 3-6 p.m. A candlelit procession down to
Blair Square from Fiske’s General Store parking lot
on Central Street will begin at 5:15 p.m., and the tree
lighting will follow.
All that strolling can be exhausting, so thanks to several sponsors, two
free trolley trolleys will be running from 12:30 – 5 p.m. Trolley route #1
goes to Village Plaza, Jordan Hall, Upper town hall and Washington
Street, and trolley #2 will take folks down Norfolk St., Railroad Street,
Central Street and downtown.
Make sure to look nice for the holiday revelry. Holliston Local Access
Television (HCAT) will be broadcasting all day long!
Also, eye makeup is usually
Holliston Pantry Shelf Announces
Winner of Snack it Right Slugfest
Holliston Girls Field Hockey
Beats Holliston Football
High School Field Hockey
scored a victory by collecting
845 snack items at a recent home
game to benefit the Holliston
Pantry Shelf. Holliston Football
collected 360 snack items, bringing
the total collected to 1,205
items with an estimated value
of more than $3,000. Snack
it Right, a Holliston studentled
organization, organized the
competition along with coaches
and student leaders from the two
athletic programs. This recent
competition was the third HHS
Slugfest sponsored by Snack it
Right, and the most successful.
“We are overwhelmed with
the success that Snack it Right
has had in bringing high quality
snack food items to Holliston
families in need,” said Steve
Bradford, President of Holliston
Pantry Shelf. “It’s truly
remarkable that these students
have partnered so effectively
with HHS athletic programs to
achieve such terrific results.”
Holliston Field Hockey also
credits its recent opponent,
Dover Sherborn, for bringing
snacks to the game to help Field
Hockey top the Football program.
“We spread the word to girls
we knew at Dover Sherborn,
and along with their parents,
they also colletcted snacks to
bring to the home game that
day,” said Kaelin Trombly, HSS
Field Hockey Captain. “It was
exciting to see how supportive
our opponents were of this great
cause.”
Holliston Pantry Shelf,
founded in 1993, serves more
than 200 families. Holliston Pantry
Shelf, located at 73 Charles
Street, is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit
Fall Clean Up: Lions Recycle for a Cause
The cooler weather seems to
have arrived long before any of
us were fully prepared, yet here
it is! It’s time to start digging out
fall and winter clothing including
sweats, warm socks and coats.
Unfortunately, some of those
items may no longer fit, or be
“fashionable,” and that means
you will be interested in figuring
out what to do with them.
Lions Environmental Program
This year, the Holliston Lions
Club has made a point to participate
in more environmental programs.
During the most recent
Celebrate Holliston, Lions gave
away more than 100 tote bags
and Holliston Leos gave away
100 Norway Spruce tree plugs.
We are not stopping there!
You can help us not only continue
our environmental programs
but help others in need
and help us raise a few extra dollars
for Pennies for Sight. Here’s
how:
On Saturday, November 2,
2019, the Holliston Lions Club
will be at the Holliston Senior
Center from 1pm to 4pm. During
these hours, we will be collecting
the following items:
Gently used coats – winter
coats of all sizes will be collected.
Men’s, women’s and children’s
winter coats which are in wearable
condition will be accepted.
We’ll make sure these coats are
cleaned and donated to someone
who might not otherwise have a
coat to keep them warm this year.
Clothing for everyone – we
will also be collecting all types
of used clothing. From infants
to the largest person you know,
we’ll take all your used clothing
and we’ll take that clothing and
turn it into cash! We’ll use the
proceeds to fund Massachusetts
Lions Eye Research Fund, Inc.
which in turn will use it to help
researchers fund top of the line
research into causes of eye disease
which can lead to blindness.
No undergarments please unless
they are in unopened packages.
Children’s Books – we are
looking for gently used children’s
books for distribution during
our “Reading Action Program.”
We’re particularly interested in
books for very young children
and teen readers. We all have
that one bookcase that’s full of
them, this is your opportunity to
help us help others learn the joy
of reading!
There’s Still Time to See WSP’s Triumph of Love
Chamber Musical by Washington St.
Players November 1, 2 & 3
By J.D. O’Gara
If you didn’t catch it at the
end of October, there’s still time
to catch Washington Street Players’
rendition of Triumph of Love,
a musical based on a book by
James Magruder, with music by
Jeffrey Stock and lyrics by Susan
Birkenhead. The play will take
place at Holliston Town Hall,
703 Washington St., Holliston,
on November 1st and 2nd, at 8
p.m., and Sunday, November
3rd, at 4 p.m. Tickets to Triumph
of Love are $20 for students and
seniors and $25 for general admission.
They will be available at
the door or at http://washingtonstreetplayers.org/.
In this musical adaptation of
the Marivaux farce, Triumph of
Love, Spartan princess Léonide,
falls in love with Agis at first
sight. This is made more difficult
by the fact that her throne was
wrongfully wrested by her family
from the object of her affection.
“It will be such a pleasure
to watch,” says WSP Director
Cindy Bell, one of the founders
of WSP. “It’s a piece that I’ve
loved for many, many years, and
it’s sort of like a bucket list play.
It’s called a chamber musical,
with seven fully-developed characters
and no ensemble.”
Bell explains the play is farcical,
with a lot of laughable moments.
“There are a lot of mistaken
identities, people pretending to
be who they’re not,” says Bell,
“but the play is very moving. It’s a
delight, because I love it, and the
cast has been wonderful. They’ve
brought their own stamp of who
these characters are.”
The cast of Triumph of Love
includes:
“Hesione” - Stephanie Mann
“Hermocrates” - Joel Hersh,
from Framingham
“Dimas” - Randy Divinski
“Corine” - Chrissy Petersen,
teaches in Holl
“Harlequin” - James Parr,
from Framingham
“Princess Leonide” - Jennifer
Paxton, of Medway
“Agis” - William Annand, from
Ashland
“I think the audience will
have a good time,” says Bell. “It’s
For those of you who have
those jars of pennies laying
around the house collecting dust
(or you found a bunch of change
in your chair cushions!) we will
also be collecting “Pennies for
Sight.” Our goal this year is to
reach $2,000 for this program.
Help us reach that goal.
Help us continue to fund
unique ways to support a cleaner
environment while helping others
live a better life because of
the donations we make. We
would like to extend our never
ending thanks to the community
for their support. If you
have any questions please feel
free to contact us via our website
at hollistonlions.org or email
funny. It’s bawdy. It’s touching,
and it’s musically very appealing.
I think they will also take away
the importance of love in any
endeavor.”
In addition to the cast, Triumph
of Love will be produced
by Karen Dinehart. The music
is directed by Mike Jones. Rich
Greeves is lighting director and
also working on the set, designed
by Nancy Stevenson. Bianca
Ed Council is the sound
director, and Neeghan Nolasco
is the stage manager. Credit also
Applications Available
for Spring Youth in
Philanthropy Programs
Do you know a high school student
who is interested in making an impact in
their community and becoming a civic
leader? The Foundation for MetroWest
is currently accepting applications for
their Youth in Philanthropy (YIP) program
to take place this coming Spring
(Jan-May) in Needham, Sudbury,
Wellesley, and Weston. High School
students who live or learn in MetroWest
communities are eligible and welcome
to apply. Dates, times, and meeting locations
vary by program. Program details
and applications are available online
at www.yipmetrowest.org/students. Priority
deadline to apply is November 15;
rolling admissions follow.
A unique experiential learning program,
YIP, provides participants the
knowledge to become engaged and informed
civic leaders in our community
by learning the importance of philanthropy
and the needs that exist in our
backyard. YIP also helps local youth
develop valuable 21st century skills,
including critical thinking, understanding
budgets, public speaking, consensus
building, and case-making. Ultimately,
the group of 20 students work together
to evaluate grant applications and distribute
funds to worthy nonprofits working
to serve youth in our communities.
“YIP is a truly amazing program
that has taught me an array of useful
skills and has given me a new perspective,”
said a recent YIP graduate. “This
program has allowed me to have a new
and improved outlook on my community
and how I can help.”
“I honestly can’t believe how impactful
YIP has been in such a short time,”
says the parent of another recent graduate.
“Our daughter keeps talking about
the site visits and has been so inspired
by the entire experience that she is now
going to volunteer at a non-profit this
summer to learn more about how one
operates. Beyond that, the experience
of asking questions of the non-profits
has given her more confidence and she
told us she is raising her hand more
often at school!”
Since launching in 1997, the Foundation
for MetroWest’s Youth in Philanthropy
program has educated over
1,800 students who have granted over
$1.2 million to over 200 MetroWest
youth development organizations. The
Foundation for MetroWest is proud to
be running one of the largest youth
philanthropy education programs in the
country. For more information about
Brown Grew into His Holliston Cross Country Passion
By Christopher Tremblay,
Staff Sports Writer
Growing up with not one,
but two older brothers who were
both excellent track, it was only
inevitable that younger Sasha
Brown would also venture into
running for Holliston High
School. Rick, who is four years
older than Sasha, holds a couple
of high school records, while
Chris (three years older) not only
ran track but cross country as
well for the Panthers.
According to the younger
Brown, all three brothers have
different aspects in their running,
but in the long run things
all equal out.
“Rick has achieved more in
sprinting, but I’m more of a distance
runner,” he said “Chris, on
the other hand, may not be the
most talented runner, but he is a
very hard worker, and his work
Sasha Brown stuck with cross-country, and now, the young captain
sees running as a lifelong pursuit.
ethic makes him better.”
His two older brothers being
both good at the sport didn’t
mean that young Sasha would
follow in their steps, and he found
that out right from the beginning.
“It was really hard at the start.
In fact, it was horrible getting
used to it,” he said. “When I saw
the notice about registration I
signed up for the cross-country
team, and that was it until the
very first practice. I waited as
long as possible before I started
running. Cross country is a very
scary sport.”
While Brown couldn’t stand
the sport at the beginning, he
now finds that he loves it. He
loves it so much that he uses running
as a de-stressor in his life
and considers it a hobby more
than a sport.
Getting involved with running
for the first time in the seventh
grade, he has had a love/hate relationship
with the sport.
“In seventh grade it was horrible,
but by the eighth grade, I
started to like it,” Brown said.
“Entering high school, I found
that I hated it again, as we had
to run longer distances, and it
was much more painful, but then
again, I came to like the sport last
year as a sophomore and still like
it now as a junior.”
Brown’s ability to continue
running cross country and track
all fell on the shoulders of Carter
Mikkelsen, who was a year older
and was a fantastic runner according
to Brown.
“When I met him, cross country
had a family feeling to it,”
Brown said. “He was not only
a big influence, but he was an
achiever so I used him as a goal
and tried to stay with him on the
course.”
Brown feels running cross
country is something that he enjoys,
especially pushing yourself
to get better. In fact, he feels the
sport calms him down.
“Having graduated a lot of seniors
from last year’s team, Sasha
put in a lot of miles over the offseason
to get ready for this year,”
Holliston Cross Country Coach
Aaron Ladd said. “He runs an
eighteen minute 5K and is usually
our top runner. He brings a
lot of energy to the course and
is known throughout the league.”
As only a junior, he was
elected captain by his teammates,
which says a lot about his character
on and off the course. Being
named a captain shocked the junior
although his coach believes
he deserves it.
“It was amazing being named
captain, but it came as a surprise,”
he said. “As a captain,
I want to keep the family atmosphere
alive. When I was a
freshman, we only had about 14
kids on the team. This year, the
group is much bigger, around
25-29 kids, and I’m responsible
for making sure they enjoy themselves.”
Individually, Brown would
like to get his 5K time under 17
minutes by the end of the season
and feels it is accomplishable if
he continues working on it.
“I just need to push myself.
When I’m out in front by myself,
I feel that I don’t always run
as fast as I should be running,”
Brown said. “But when you have
someone there with you, it clicks.
There is a fire that is lit, and you
run faster, so hopefully there will
be a lot of competitive runners to
keep me moving.”
If Sasha does push himself,
Coach Ladd sees good things for
his junior runner.
“At this point, he’s on the
fringe of being an All Star,” the
coach said. “His goal is to push
himself, so that he can accomplish
that goal. He continues to
get better one day at a time.”
While Brown still has two
years left at Holliston, he is already
thinking about running in
college and beyond that.
“I definitely want to run in
college,” he said. “But it will not
be over when school is finished
for good. Running is a continuous
sport that you can do anytime
and hand down to your
children to do.”

Cotting’s Defensive Ability Big Plus
for Holliston Booters
By KEN HAMWEY,
Staff Sports Writer
Tyler Cotting is a dynamic
asset for the Holliston High
boys’ soccer team.
A center back for the last
three seasons, the 6-foot, 185-
pound senior not only is technically
skilled, but he also possesses
a plethora of strengths that
made him a Tri Valley League
all-star last year. He’s also a twotime
captain for the Panthers.
“Tyler has great instincts, and
he’s fearless,’’ said his coach, Jay
Dupuis, one of the area’s veteran
soccer mentors. “Tyler is
big, strong and fast. He’s always
in the right position, and he’s a
great teammate. I rate his as the
best defender in the TVL.’’
Cotting’s tenacious defensive
ability has been a major plus this
fall, just like it was last year when
Holliston won the TVL Large
Division title, then rolled to
the Division 3 South Sectional
championship. At Local Town
Pages deadline, the Panthers had
a 7-2-2 record and were in first
place in the TVL Large Division.
“We’re a younger team than
last year’s squad that got to the
State semifinals, but if we continue
to play well and play together,
we could be in the mix
for the State crown,’’ Cotting
said. “It’s realistic, because we’ve
got good talent, and we can play
with any team.’’
A native of Holliston, Cotting
has other admirable goals.
“I’d like to win our remaining
matches and capture the Large
Division title again,’’ he emphasized.
“My personal goals are to
keep striving to be the best captain
I can be, become a league
all-star for the second time and
prepare the younger players to
carry the torch, so that Holliston’s
rich soccer tradition can
be maintained.’’
The Panthers defense was
superb in last year’s Sectional
playoffs. Holliston won the title
by blanking Norton, 1-0. Unfortunately,
they bowed in the
State semifinals by a 2-1 margin
to Wayland.
“It was disappointing to lose
a close match in the States,’’
Cotting said. “I wish we could
have won the State title for
the seniors. But, the Sectional
championship meant a lot. The
entire team played well, and our
back line was solid. We were in
position and in sync to defend
effectively and shut out Norton.
We rose to the occasion.’’
What makes Cotting such a
top-notch competitor is the passion
he has for playing center
back. His field vision is superb,
his positioning is excellent, and
he likes the action that goes with
being the last line of defense before
the goalie. “I like blocking
and tackling, and making stops
is enjoyable,’’ he said. “Preparation
is the key, because if our opponents
penetrate our line, then
there’s a 50-50 chance a goal
will be scored.’’
Cotting’s preparation even
extends to offense. At Local Town
Pages deadline, he had three
goals and three assists and was
third on the team in scoring. On
defense, he’s sparked Holliston
to five shutouts in its first 11
games.
Relying on a physical style
and refusing to give an inch,
Cotting isn’t timid about defending
in a tenacious manner.
And, he’s bullish on Holliston’s
three underclassmen who round
out the back line — juniors Idrissa
Smith (center back) and
Ryan Katz (right back) and
sophomore Brendan MacLeod
(left back).
“Idrissa likes contact, he’s
technically sound and is a solid
one-on-one defender,’’ Cotting
noted. “Ryan is an intelligent
player who gets position and
doesn’t fear contact. Brendan
wins lots of headers, can pass
and is also a terrific one-on-one
defender.’’
Cotting, who is a six-year veteran
of club soccer, is delighted
to be one of the Panthers’ four
captains and admires his senior
colleagues on the leadership
team — midfielder Evans Djohan
and strikers Carter Mikkelsen
and Thomas Sojka.
“They’re phenomenal captains
and outstanding at their
positions,’’ said Cotting, who
hopes to lead by example and
by communicating with and
supporting younger players.
Cotter also lauds the soccer
savvy of Coach Dupuis, “Coach
Dupuis is a terrific motivator,’’
Cotting said. “He adjusts well
to all situations, is very strategic,
and he’s able to analyze all aspects
of the game.’’
An honor-roll student, Cotting,
who also plays varsity basketball,
would like to continue
playing soccer in college. Planning
to major in criminal justice,
he’s considering four schools —
Marist, Roger Williams, Saint
Anselm’s and Westfield State.
For the present, however, the
18-year-old Cotting is focused
on the tourney and helping his
teammates prepare for the nuances
that accompany post-season
play.
Cotting, who stresses the
importance of practice, also
has learned some valuable life
lessons from sports, and it’s no
accident that he’s a two-year
captain. “I’ve learned how to be
a leader,’’ he said. “Athletics also
Tyler Cotting shouldn’t have any problems maintaining lofty
standards, because he’s a rare breed soccer player.
adversity and be resilient, how
