from the
editor
Autumn is here!
Fall in South Florida brings me into my closet, to dig out
boots, light sweaters, and maybe even a jacket! This
month we also prepare for Thanksgiving – the busiest
traveling day of the year. If you’re expecting out of town
guests, you will not run out of things to do in Delray
Beach in November!
How about some tennis? The annual Chris Evert Pro-
Celebrity Tennis Classic celebrating its 30th year and is here November
23 and 24. Buy your tickets, and watch celebrities play for charity!
The City of Delray Beach is excited to host the 33rd Annual Turkey
Trot 5K Run/Health Walk on November 23, at Anchor Park. Enjoy a
beautiful run along A1A. The 5K is timed and medals are awarded!
And that’s not all - participants receive a Delray Beach Turkey Trot
finisher medal, race bib, and event shirts – and are encouraged
to dress up – how much fun! For more information call Danielle
Beardsley, Delray Beach Parks & Recreation at (561) 243-7277 or
email at BeardsleyD@mydelraybeach.com.
On November 30th there is the lighting of the famous 100ft
Christmas Tree! All festivities begin at 5pm. This month-long
celebration kicks off with Santa lighting the famous 100ft Christmas
Tree at 7:15pm. After the Tree Lighting Santa will be available for
photos! Enjoy ice-skating, Putt’n Around Mini Golf & Carousel and
much more! Event is free, activities for a nominal fee, and take
place at Old School Square Park. For all the holiday events, visit:
www.100ftchristmastree.com.
On a more somber note, we would like to pay our respects to
Architectural Icon Bob Currie. Mr. Currie was integral in helping
develop many communities, and especially our own, which was his
as well. His legacy and wonderful work will be enjoyed for many
generations to come.
Thank you all, our readers, and loyal advertisers for allowing us
at Atlantic Ave Magazine to do what we love. We are grateful and
thankful for all of you.
Wear
gratitude like
a cloak, and
it will feed
every corner
of your life.
By Darien Davies
Delray Under $50
Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene,
it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or
restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach
offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back
restaurants, and events for the whole family or
nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do
in Delray Beach in November for $50 or less.
One of the perks of living in a city with a lovely
downtown space is that there are tons of local
businesses. Yes, the mall is always there
with flashy signs and never-ending selections, but
it just feels a bit stale, doesn’t it? Instead, hit the
Ave and support your local creators who make
Delray so special. Small Business Saturday is
Saturday, November 30 (the Saturday after
Thanksgiving) and is a fantastic time to head
outside and walk off the turkey and casserole
you’ve been enjoying the past couple of days.
Good news for you because the 20th Annual
Downtown Delray Beach Thanksgiving
Weekend Art Festival is here to help. You’re
invited to peruse this annual juried art
festival of hand-crafted artwork including
glass, photography, painting, mixed media,
fiber, jewelry, and much more, all lovingly
created by more than 100 exhibitors. Yes,
you could stick to Black Friday and Cyber
Monday, but, instead, rest assured knowing
that Aunt Janet would love something
unique and special that you picked out just for
her. The Festival begins at East Atlantic Avenue
and Northeast Fourth Avenue and heads north
for a couple blocks before heading east to Southeast
Fifth Avenue. So get up, get out, and go get anything
your little heart desires for the holidays. “Me” gifts are
totally appropriate, too, just saying. The Festival is open
Saturday, November 30 and Sunday, December 1 from
10am to 5pm. Visit www.artfestival.com or call (561)
746-6615 for more information.
A
family is ideally a group of people who positively
support, protect and encourage each
other. Sadly, not all families are like that.
November is Family Stories Month and is a perfect
time to recognize troubled youth and partner
to do something about it. Thankfully, there’s
24 | november 2019 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
a fun way to do just that. The 2019 Chris Evert Pro-
Celebrity Tennis Classic returns to the Delray Beach
Tennis Center and provides an enjoyable experience
for guests that will hopefully lead to more enjoyable
experiences for children who need it. Since 1989,
Chris Evert’s efforts have helped to contribute
more than $25 million in an ongoing campaign
against drug abuse and child neglect in Florida.
Proceeds from the 2019 event are distributed
to programs funded through the Ounce
of Prevention Fund of Florida and
the Drug Abuse Foundation of
Palm Beach County. Celebrities
you can expect to see hitting
the court include Gavin
Rossdale, Carson Kressley,
Jon Lovitz, Seal, Shawn
Hatosy, Martina Navratilova,
and more. The tennis competition
is held Saturday, November 23
and Sunday, November 24 from 11am to
3pm. Tickets are $20 for general admission or
$40 for premium club seats, with options going
up from there. So get out there and show
some love, love for families who need it. The
Delray Beach Tennis Center is located at 201
W. Atlantic Ave. Visit www.chrisevert.com or
and to purchase tickets.
If you are afraid of you or someone else
moving your cheese, just remember Henry
Ford’s quote, “Whether you think you can,
or think you can’t – you’re right.” Thankfully there are
people who are plunging into the unknown zone of being
the complete creator of their careers, and for that, Ford applauds
you. November is National Entrepreneur Month and the
local artistic movers and shakers invite you to indulge in their
offers, with a goal that you’ll enjoy the fruits of their labor

for many moons to come. The Arts Warehouse is opening their
doors for the Fall/Winter Warehouse Market, which is a special
pop-up marketplace of fine artists, makers, creative and more.
It’s a perfect place to not only support your local art-repreneurs
and find some unique goods for your art collection and home,
but it’ll provide an excellent opportunity to get some gifts for
your friends or family members. The Friday Night Preview is
Friday, November 22 from 6 to 8pm and costs a cool $5 to get
the first looks at the goods. Or, show up on Saturday, November
23 from 10:30am to 2:30pm and enjoy free admission. The Arts
Warehouse is located at 313 N.E. Third St. Visit artswarehouse.
Do you know how veganism is helping the planet? If not,
it helps to combat world hunger, conserves water, cleans
the soil, reduces energy consumption, purifies the air,
and more. So, what are you waiting for? Even if you aren’t into a
completely meat and dairy free diet, take small steps for certain
meals each week or month. November is World Vegan Month
and you’re invited to help the Earth and your body by indulging
in a plant-based diet (or, at least try it). You don’t have to go far
because Delray is home to The New Vegan, which is a restaurant
that focuses on not only making great and diverse vegan cuisine,
but also educating the community on the benefits of eating
vegan. Don’t miss the falafel burger, made with dehydrated
garbanzo and fava beans, fajita and garlic for $16, or sink your
teeth into the Palm Toona melt, with hearts of palm mixed with
sweet peppers, fennel, almonds and celery, served with lettuce,
tomato and melted dairy-free cheese on bread for $15. If you’re
in a rush, enjoy the vegan milkshake for $9 or the green veggie
smoothie with kale, spinach, cucumber, celery, ginger, coconut
water and frozen pineapples for $10. Whatever you get, it’s going
to taste deliciously healthy, and you’ll feel good knowing
you’re making a difference, one bite at a time. The New Vegan
is located at 528 NE Second St. Visit www.thenewvegan.com or
call (561) 404-5301 for more information.
With work, school, extracurricular activities, hobbies,
and planning for the future, it’s easy to get swept
up in the calendar without recognizing how you’re
spending your time, especially as a family. Thanksgiving time is
a great time to slow down, hang out and be together, and what
better way than throwing in a little group activity with some
pre-Thanksgiving exercise! Saturday, November 23 is Family
Volunteer Day is a great time to volunteer a little slice of your
weekend and hit the pavement to burn some cake calories and
enjoy the fresh air. The 33rd Annual Delray Beach Turkey Trot
is here to spoil you with a fun jaunt along A1A and since it’s a
timed event and your family will be with you, it’s a great opportunity
for friendly competition. Whoever loses gets to do
Thanksgiving dishes, and whoever wins gets to instead enjoy a
post-meal nap? Early bird fees are $10 for runners 14 years old
or younger, or $25 for runners 15 and older. The Trot begins at
Anchor Park, 340 S. Ocean Blvd., but you’re encouraged to arrive
early and park at Sandoway and Ingraham Parks as there
is no parking at Anchor Park. So, lace up the sneakers, stretch it
out, and enjoy your trot, my little turkeys. Please visit www.delreaybeachfl.gov
presents previously unseen works
by painter, Luciana Boaventura. Between
watercolor and oleo, these landscapes
evoke a repertoire of memories
and the liquefied terrain of dreams
brought to light. A graduate in fashion
design from the Faculdade Santa
Marcelina University in São Paulo,
Boaventura began her career first as
a fashion designer, then as a painter.
This was an extension of her interests
Boaventura approached contemporary
painting through contact
with many art workshops and painters,
such as Paulo Pasta, with whom
she worked in a studio for four years.
1 Cowboys And Frenchmen –
8-10pm. The front line of two alto
saxophones is the vehicle for reimagining
the role of horns in a small group
setting, charting new territory by exploring
individuality within the same
timbre. The inspiration for the band
name, Cowboys & Frenchmen, is a
short film by David Lynch, called “The
Cowboy and The Frenchmen.” The
film is a Western - but with a unique,
out-there interpretation of that classic
genre. Similarly, this quintet’s music
has one foot firmly planted in a genre,
while the other one is busy trying to
kick down the genre’s door. Tickets
range from $35-$45. Arts Garage, 561-
2 An Evening With The Wildfire
audiences with performances that
showcase the band’s passion, musical
prowess and the joy they take in playing
music together. While their sound
is unmistakably rooted in the blues,
the band plays both original and cover
songs that draw deeply from the well
of Soul, R&B, Rock’N’Roll and New
Orleans music. Tickets range from
8-10pm. Lauren Anderson had recently
returned home from a trip to Los
rehearsals, record contracts, and ultimately
a whole lot of empty promises
— when she began writing songs for
her third EP, Won’t Stay Down. She’d
been playing shows since 2014, mixing
her blues-rock roots with elements
of Americana, soul, and country music.
She loved the work, but she’d grown
frustrated with the industry, particularly
the demands thrust upon her
as a female artist. Tickets range from
South Florida Mourns Architectural Icon Bob Currie
Maltz Jupiter Theatre,
Pompano Pier Parking
Garage, Delray Beach’s Old
School Square Among Key
Projects
Condolences from across South Florida
have been flooding into the office
of Currie Sowards Aguila in Delray Beach
since it was announced that founder Bob
Currie passed away October 11, 2019 after
a battle with cancer.
The architectural firm, which is celebrating
its 50th anniversary this year, has
been a dynamic influence on the design
of many Florida cities, most especially
Bob’s own community of Delray Beach.
Bob played an integral role working
on the revitalization of the Old School
Square Cultural Arts Complex in collaboration
with the community and the project’s
visionary and his dear friend, Frances
Bourque. Bob and his team provided
on-going services from 1990 to present
in the programming, master planning,
architecture, and historic preservation of
this cultural jewel.
Other architectural commissions include
the South County Administrative
Complex and South County Civic Center
for Palm Beach County; Temple Sinai; the
Ocean Avenue Bridge; Sundy House Restaurant,
to name few and more than 25
fire rescue and public safety projects including
all of the stations completed for
the City of Delray Beach, and many other
projects from the Palm Beaches, Broward
and Miami-Dade Counties, and many municipalities
and cities in between.
To honor Bob’s passion and commitment
to his community, design and literacy,
the firm requests that in lieu of flowers,
donations be made to the Old School
Square Foundation, Palm Beach Chapter
AIA Foundation or the Delray Beach Public
Library.
Molly Bennett and her siblings pull
together to fulfill their parents’ dream:
turning their historic Bluebell, North Carolina
with a bad case of writer’s block.
friendship. When Molly finds a long-lost
letter in the walls of her inn she embarks
Though surrender is what Maxim Cade
demanded of my body and heart, I had
other plans. We were fast-burning fascination
and combustible chemistry, but
the man I trusted with everything was a
trickster. A thief who stole my love. If what
we had was a lie, why did it feel so real?
The man I swore to hate will have it all and
wants me at his side. But power is a game,
and we’re the pawns and players.
Facing insurmountable odds, will we
Spinal Stenosis
Effective Non-Surgical Treatment Options
Spinal Stenosis is a debilitating orthopedic and
neurological disorder which affects primarily
the geriatric population. It is characterized by
lower back pain that can radiate into the legs
and produce subsequent weakness.
Often times the weakness is associated with painful numbness
and tingling. A common presentation is a drastic increase
in pain when the individual is standing idle, as occurs
when cooking or doing the dishes, or with prolonged walking and
almost immediate relief when progressing to a sitting position.
Spinal stenosis seems to be greatly misunderstood in the general
population. It literally means a narrowing of the spinal canal, the
bony structure which houses and protects the spinal cord and spinal
nerve roots. The occlusion of the spinal canal is typically caused
by one of four distinct entities; congenitally narrowed canal from
birth, tumor, disc herniation, and or arthritis. By far the leading
cause is arthritis in which bone spurs and changes in the morphology
or shape of the vertebra lead to occlusion.
Unfortunately, the primary recommendation for such a presentation
as spinal stenosis is surgical intervention. However, nonsurgical
conservative treatment options have vastly improved over
the years and should be a serious initial consideration before any
invasive procedures. In-fact some of the most decorated orthopedic
and neurosurgeons in the world are now having their patients
attempt conservative therapies prior to surgery.
Revolutionary new treatment options are centered on decompressing
the spine utilizing advanced stretching mechanisms, applying
flexion based trunk exercises, manipulating the lumbar
spine, and applying class IV cold laser therapy. Due to the fact that
arthritis cannot be removed by any means, the main objectives
of these therapies are to reposition the spinal joints and stretch
the lumbar ligaments and tendons so that the canal is physically
widened. The amount of widening necessary to produce positive
long-lasting change is very minimal and quite attainable. In conjunction
with this, cold laser therapy decreases the healing time
by increasing the metabolism of the injured cells and by reducing
inflammation and spasm. Therapeutic exercises are applied to increase
strength in the correct muscle groups so as to reinforce the
widening of the canal. Give non-traditional yet effective treatment
options a chance prior to any surgical intervention.
By Jennifer Wilson, MSN, ARNP, NP-C
The Body Contouring
Dynamic Duo
Liposuction is not for the obese patient, but for those who have
disproportionate fat deposits. Those with realistic expectations,
healthy diets, and good exercise routines are the best candidates.
However, even those patients could have sagging skin or skin
laxity after the fat is removed by liposuction causing an additional
unwanted aesthetic result. By pairing a radiofrequency
device, such as ThermiTight, immediately after removing
the fat cells, the skin laxity can also be improved while
stimulating collagen production and strengthening
the surrounding supportive tissue.
When both Liposuction and radiofrequency
are used together, they become
a dynamic duo that effectively helps to
contour the body while using a minimally
invasive approach.
Traditional tumescent liposuction was
developed in 1976 by a dematologic surgeon,
Dr. Jeffrey Klein, and has been consistently
refined with each passing decade.
With this technique, a mixture of saline water,
lidocaine anesthetic and small amounts
of epinephrine are infused into the fatty area
being treated. This local anesthesia enables
the tissue to swell and allows your surgeon to
gently remove unwanted fatty deposits. Using
the authentic tumescent technique, intravenous
and general anesthesia risks are eliminated.
Because patients are coherent, the doctor
can judge results in an upright position, a benefit
that cannot be employed using heavier sedation.
Additional advantages include little bleeding,
less bruising, and quicker healing, and because
micro-cannulas are used, there is no need for
stitches or drains, thus reducing the risk of infection
or scarring.
Laser liposuction is the most current
addition to the tumescent technique.
“Smart Lipo” was the first laser approved
by the FDA for fat dissolution.
Laser energy such as radiofrequency is
used to break apart fat cells and facilitates
removal of fat while promoting
tissue tightening, resulting in smoother
skin. ThermiTight is a non-surgical,
60 | November 2019 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
minimally invasive alternative to surgery for skin tightening. The
treatment uses radio frequency (a heat energy) to stimulate collagen
production beneath the skin, which improves sagging, texture
and decreases wrinkling.
ThermiTight is formally described as “thermistor controlled subdermal
skin tightening,” which essentially means that controlled
heat is targeted at the collagen layer of the skin. To get under
the skin, the ThermiRF system is used along
with a tiny probe, which is inserted just
below the surface. It functions like an injection
but without a needle. The treatment
area is completely numbed with
a small amount of local anesthetic solution,
promoting patient comfort through
the duration of the procedure.
The physician delivers the radio frequency
energy into the area through gentle
movements that heat the subdermal tissue
(collagen layer) to a specific internal temperature
that stimulates collagen. A Thermal
Image Guidance system is used to monitor internal
temperatures and ensure safety of the
skin, both inside and out.
Results can be noticed immediately but can
take up to three months to see maximum improvement.
Generally, patients need a single
treatment, but, if warranted, a second treatment
can be done a few months after the first. This treatment
is not meant to replace a surgical lift or removal
of the skin, but if one is trying to avoid surgery, radiofrequency
can offer a marked esthetic improvement
to any part of the body that has received liposuction.
Problem areas of the body that have stubborn fat
and decreased elasticity will be transformed by this
dynamic combination of technology.
Makin’ It Through The Holidays
It’s only November but before you know
it our schedules will be filled with holiday
parties, Christmas cookies and egg nog!
(Does anyone really drink that anyway!)
The holidays are an awesome time of year but between all the
gatherings, traveling, celebrations etc... it’s also a time when
fitness habits and clean eating dies hard. This year commit
to keeping things under control beforehand so you’re not kicking
yourself when January rolls around. To make sure you’re on the
right track, let’s look at some important components to keeping it
together this holiday season.
1. Plan before you eat!
You’ve heard it before, and you’ll hear it again: nutrition is everything.
This is what will make or break you through the holidays.
No matter how many hours are spent working out, if your nutrition
is a mess you won’t stand a chance. The best advice is to plan
the week ahead and decide where you would like to splurge. For
example, don’t blow your eating Tuesday night at home when you
know you have holiday parties coming up on Friday and Saturday.
Choose wisely. Before you go out eat a small amount of
protein so you’re not starving and setting yourself
up for failure before you even get there. We
all know how easy it is to make bad food
choices when you’re starving!
2. Practice Mindful Eating!
People are often rushed and go
through the holiday season, rushing
from one thing to the next which frequently
leads to mindless eating (tasting every
cookie you bake) and/or multitasking during
meals. Studies show that those who eat
while distracted are more likely to overeat.
This is because we’re unable to pay attention
to our body’s fullness signals. No surprise,
right! Take the time to sit and eat a meal
with as little distractions as possible. Easier said
than done but give it a shot!
3. Move Every Day!
And no, running through the mall holiday shopping
doesn’t count! Since the holidays are such a
busy time, it might be not be realistic to get all of your
62 | november 2019 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
normal workouts in. Aim to move and sweat EVERY single day!
Even if it’s only 10 minutes at home. Doing some kind of movement
each day will keep your routine of working out and it will set up
your day for making healthier choices. Invest in dumbbells and
bands and follow a good home routine if need be. Remember that
something is always better than nothing.
4. Be held Accountable!
Things can go downhill if you have
no one to answer to but yourself. If
you happen to be the only person
in your family or group
of friends interested in
keeping on track this
holiday season, find
someone who is! Buddy
up and hold each other accountable!
Make a plan together
and stick to it!
5. Don’t Stress!
My last and probably most
important piece of advice is
to not beat yourself up. During
the holidays and it’s almost inevitable
– there is just going to be
more of everything! Stressing out
over indulgence is not worth the
energy. If you find yourself falling
off track more than you would like
just remember you are only one
clean meal or workout away from
feeling good again. Pick yourself
back up, dust off and move forward.
WINE HOUSE SOCIAL & DELUXE PROPERTIES
Dina L. Branham’s
Combined Passions...
written and photographed By Dina Branham
What do you get when you combine a career in real estate and the
love of wine? If you are Dina Branham, you create a place where
people can drink wine, be creative and search for a new home all
in the same place. Well, that’s how it all started in May of 2018....
Who can tell my story better than me?
I’m a local, a multi small business-woman owned entrepreneur.
I moved to Florida 16 years ago to be near my parents. I immediately
jumped into real estate and became a broker in 2004. After a
successful decade in real estate I decided to launch my own brand,
Deluxe Properties in Delray Beach. Initially I opened on George
Bush Blvd and after two great years, I decided I wanted to be in the
downtown area, the central business district. However, because of
city retail zoning requirements, I had to get creative. I thought, if
Capital One can combine banking and coffee, why can’t I combine
real estate and wine? Wine not? Right???!!!
In May of 2018
I did just that. I opened a small boutique wine store and wine
tasting bar in the first 20 feet of a 575 sf retail space in Pineapple
Grove. The real estate branch “kiosk” was in the remaining space.
64 | november 2019 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
COPYRIGHTED
With the advances in online technology, a “micro-office” space vs.
a huge brick and mortar concept made sense. The real estate office
consisted of high tops with iPads featuring our mobile app,
where people could “Sip & Surf.” The space hosted paint parties,
wine tastings, pop up art and music. The WINE HOUSE SOCIAL was
born. The concept is in the name. WINE for the amazing boutique
sustainable and organic wine selection, HOUSE for the real estate
aspect and SOCIAL, for all the other social events.
FAST forWARD....
After only one year, I grew out of the space, and found myself
expanding into over 2000 square feet at the Hyatt Place Hotel. Not
only did I outgrow the initial space, but the Wine Bar took off. I have
what I call, “My Big Girl Bar” now. Open just five months and now
I offer over 50 wines by the glass.

I’ve hosted baby showers, bridal showers, corporate and
fundraising events. I’ve added Charcuterie boards which consist
of organic cheeses, and no nitrate, grass fed meats too. In
addition, I will be adding other unique and fun small plates
very soon. There is live music twice a week, and a calendar
of monthly events. Our new location is: 104 NE 2nd Avenue
What about the real estate, you may ask? Although the city
would not now allow me to move the real estate office with
the wine bar in the same location, I am still active owner and
broker of DELUXE PROPERTIES REAL ESTATE...BUT with even
better news. I’m super excited to announce a new partnership
with DELRAY BEACH REAL ESTATE CO., owner and broker,
Noelle McIntyre. Taking on a full time Wine Bar has been
keeping me busy, and there is no one else in this town, in this
industry, I respect more than Noelle. Noelle, is a native Floridian
and has extensive history in the region that only enhances
my specific “Deluxe” customer service approach. We’ve joined
forces, and created the “DELUXE DIVISION” of DELRAY BEACH
REAL ESTATE CO. It’s a great match for my agents and myself
to work with Noelle and her team at DBRE. We are two powerhouse
women who share much in common, including our
community-based vision for the company. It doesn’t get much
better than this! New location: 100 NE 5th Avenue Delray
iDental of Delray Beach
The Premiere Dentist --
Dr. Alex Gruenberg
By Diane Feen | photos by melissa korman
Dr. Alex Gruenberg is acclaimed as one of the premiere
cosmetic dentists in South Florida. He developed an acute eye
for facial aesthetic dentistry while living in New York, where
he attended New York University College of Dentistry, a world
class dental school. Dr. Gruenberg is here to deliver results.
“My passion is to create beautiful smiles that positively
impact the face and highlight your natural features. A
smile is the first attribute people notice, not your shoes
or your purse. It is literally your first impression on people, including
your future employer or spouse. Our smiles are therefore hypercritical
to our overall success and happiness in today’s society.”
But in order to work well with any dentist you need trust. That’s
why Dr. Gruenberg believes that building a strong rapport is key to
achieving painless, predictable, and successful treatment outcomes.
“I wear a doctor’s hat when I’m caring for the individual - making
sure I’m doing what is in their specific best interest. I also wear a
friend hat, in which I am warm and inviting, helping to relieve patients
of anxiety because they see me as a person they can open up
to and trust.”
What makes Dr. Gruenberg stand out is how patient-centric he is.
He is not the type of doctor that is out the door in the flash of an eye.
“I make it a point to spend a lot of time with each patient. I listen to
66 | november 2019 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
them and find out what they want. We get great results because everything
we do is bespoke, it’s custom made for the person’s size, age
and preference,” said the NYU graduate.
When he says bespoke, what Dr. Gruenberg means is that everything
is custom made from the ground up for the patient with the
utmost attention to detail and quality. Dr. G has a theory – that there
is more to the beauty of a smile than teeth color – that’s why he focuses
on the shape, size, and harmony of each tooth. Additionally, the
incorporation of facial aesthetic procedures such as Botox and lip fillers
helps highlight the smile further and reduce the appearance of
wrinkles and imperfections
“All of my beautiful dental work starts with getting to know the patient
and having them explain their deepest concerns and needs. It is
like a riddle. I have to figure out what motivates every single patient.
After that we perform a physical analysis of the patient – their facial
structure, age, and personality. Our porcelain veneers and crowns
are then sent to a master technician where porcelain powder and
liquid are mixed and hand-layered into gorgeous and life-like 3D creations.
There are microscopic levels of detail here. As a result, the
final product fits like a glove and looks completely natural.”
According to Dr. Gruenberg, an elderly man does not get the same
crown restoration as a 25-year-old woman. For example, Dr. Gruenberg
may square the edges of a tooth out slightly to simulate years
of mild wear. He may add some custom staining. A younger patient
would probably receive something slightly more rounded off and
brighter. Dr Gruenberg explains that this is a form of biomimicry.
He has reviews to support this promise. “I went to see Dr. Gruenberg
for bonding, and he discovered I had a cracked tooth. He
handled it quickly and easily with a crown. Dr. Gruenberg was very
knowledgeable and his attention to details proved to be a painless
experience for me,” said one patient.
Others are equally as enthusiastic. “If you need surgical or cosmetic
dentistry done, you will not find a more skilled and pleasant
dentist. Dr. G is outstanding,” said Joseph.
Dr. G is not only a cosmetic specialist, he is also an expert in Invisalign,
a state-of-the-art orthodontic system that shifts your teeth
utilizing clear retainers, into perfect harmony. The foundation to a
beautiful smile is straight teeth and a perfect bite. Issues like overbites
and crowding cause abnormal bites which leads premature aging
and wear. You would be surprised by how much a perfect bite can
reduce wrinkle formation and change the shape of your face.
The reason people rave about Dr. Gruenberg is because he is cognizant
that each person has specific dental needs. From cosmetic
dentistry to implants, crowns, bridges and dentures, he is consistent
when it comes to delivering care that is thoughtful and precise.
iDental’s goal is to make each visit personalized, gentle, comprehensive
and kind. “During your initial visit, we will take the time to
Revitalize
Your Smile
get to know you and let you to get to know us. We will discuss your
dental needs, desires and learn what is most important to you.” They
also offer sedation options for those who need it.
“At the end of the day my reward is to visualize what I have created
and see the happiness on my patients’ faces. I like to feel I can make
the world a little more perfect - more beautiful. That is the best part
of being a cosmetic dentist.”
A Boutique Law Firm
Exclusively Practicing Family Law
By nicol jenkins | photos by melissa korman
Known as a dedicated and passionate attorney,
Cynthia M. Pyfrom, Esq. will fight for her clients when
it comes to matters of matrimonial and family law.
Clients are not just another number at this boutique law firm,
which focuses on providing individual attention to its clients.
When you call the firm, you will be scheduled to speak directly
to Cynthia, not an associate attorney.
“I am the face of the firm and I do all the work. I am reliable, and
I will answer questions in a timely fashion. You will not go through
three to four people to get to me,” said the local attorney.
Her law firm, Cynthia M. Pyfrom, P.A. was founded in 2014 on the
belief that everyone deserves honest and straightforward legal representation.
President and Owner, Cynthia Pyfrom, Esq., has a passion
for family law that is evidenced by her numerous years of experience
as a paralegal and ultimate decision to attend law school in order to
make a personal impact in her community.
Cynthia M. Pyfrom, P.A. provides high quality legal representation
in Matrimonial and Family Law matters, including but not limited to
dissolution of marriage, child support, timesharing, equitable distribution
of property, modifications, enforcement, contempt, pre and
post nuptial agreements, paternity and alimony. Since these matters
can sometimes be a financial burden on the parties involved, Cynthia
M. Pyfrom, P.A. provides competitive rates along with reasonable
retainer fees.
Family law matters can evoke high emotions and stress on those
involved. Cynthia M. Pyfrom, P.A. understands the sensitive nature
of these family law matters and works hard to ensure her clients are
walked through the process with step-by-step legal advice and personal
involvement.
The local attorney has a wealth of expertise in the legal field. She
started working as a law receptionist in 1997 and later became a paralegal
in the family law field in 2005.
“I fell in love with family law when I first started working in that field
in 2005. Ultimately, I decided to go to law school and become an attorney
myself. I worked full time at a family law office during the day and
attended law school at Nova Southeastern University in the Evening
Program four nights a week for three and a half years,” said Pyfrom.
Besides her experience in law, Pyfrom incorporates her undergraduate
studies in psychology into her practice.
“I was originally going to be a high school teacher and took psychology
classes during my undergraduate studies. When I fell into family
law in 2005, I really enjoyed it because it mixed law and psychology. I
genuinely enjoy being able to help my clients through one of the most
difficult experiences of their life,” said Pyfrom.
The attorney believes her practice is unique because of her extensive
legal background and her personal experiences in life, which give
her a distinctive empathetic perspective. Cynthia is the sole attorney
and she specializes in personalized attention to each of her clients. She
is always accessible to answer her client’s questions regarding their
case, and she deals with clients on a one-on-one basis. Her rates are
extremely reasonable, compared to other attorneys in the area, and
Cynthia’s wealth of experience in the legal field. She also gives back to
the community. She is currently the President of the South Palm Beach
County Chapter of Florida Association for Women Lawyers and is also
a founding member of The Susan Greenberg Family Law American Inn
of Court of the Palm Beaches, currently serving as Membership Chair.
“What sets us apart from our competitors is that I understand the
ins and outs of practicing law without having a large law firm. I provide
individual attention to each of my clients. I am also divorced and a
child of divorce, so I understand what my clients are going through. My
goal is to help them get to the other side of this experience as quickly
as possible so they can move on with their lives,” said Pyfrom.
Pyfrom thinks her firm has been so successful because of the
small boutique service.
“My ultimate goal of the firm is to provide a unique service to
the community that helps me stand out in a field that is inundated
with attorneys. I get to know each of my clients, as family law can
be the most intimate area of law. I believe what makes a good family
law attorney is their legal and life experience as well as their
background. The ability to be empathetic with a client in family
law, letting them know that you truly care, is vitally important.”
Her clients praise Cynthia and the law firm for helping them
through a difficult time in their life.
“Cynthia went above and beyond for me as an attorney. She
is reliable, trustworthy and very skilled on the family process. I
would definitely recommend her to any woman going through a
hard time regarding family law. She puts you at ease during your
case, always responding to your questions in a timely manner
and she is very honest,” stated a client.
“Very happy with Cynthia and her performance during my
case. Felt at ease during this stressful situation. Watching her at
work is amazing the way Cynthia is prepared and organized, like
clockwork she works very smooth in court. I would highly recommend
Cynthia as a very efficient and reliable lawyer that will see
your case go through and help you with a positive outcome. I’m
very grateful and thankful with Cynthia,” stated another client.
Antica Sartoria
Unique Italian Clothing
And Accessories
BY nicol jenkins | photos by melissa korman
Discover Boho chic style clothing and beach accessories from
the streets of Positano, Italy to Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach.
Owner/Fashionista Renee Schafer in a Giacomo Cinque boho chic dress
Antica Sartoria, a unique boutique located in the heart of Delray
Beach, has something for everyone. Customers can find
the one-of-a-kind clothing of famous clothing designer Giacomo
Cinque from Positano, Italy.
Each year, Giacomo designs an entire new collection. Many of the
clothes are like a work of art and described as a Boho chic style and
casual beach chic for women of all ages.
“This designer only makes so many of each piece. When you shop
here what you are looking at is original, and you can’t get them anywhere
else,” said owner Renee Schaefer.
The boutique carries a casual beachy style and Boho chic attire,
which you can wear from the beach to happy hour or dinner on the
Avenue. Their affordable pricing and fashionable line sells quickly
and they change their merchandise every week. Other top sellers
are their one-piece bathing suits, earrings, necklaces, scarves, Boho
beach bags, denim jackets and hats. Antica Sartoria has everything
from everyday wear to beach chic to statement pieces. They are a
boutique in style but not in prices. Affordable is the goal with pricing
ranging from $9.99 to a custom piece at $299.
“We don’t want to be a boutique where you see the same thing for
six months. We are always changing our merchandise every week,”
said Renee, adding, “When people look in the window they think
we are really expensive, but our price points are for everybody.”
As soon as you walk through the doors of the Delray Beach boutique,
you will be greeted by friendly staff and stunning beach style
clothing. The “feel good” vibe continues with the bright colored
accessories, handmade sandals and clothing. The local store takes
you all the way to Italy complete with Italian music and décor. The
store even has a fun line of accessories, pocket books, children’s
clothing, mommy and me outfits and much more! Their colorful
scarves are a best seller!
“People are always asking for our scarves. The patterns are so
beautiful, bright and colorful. Many customers buy them for souvenirs
to take home, along with our matching Boho bags, which make
a nice gift,” said Renee.
Owners Renee Schaefer, Curtis Sigretto, and Wayne Jenkins
wanted to bring the style of Italian clothing to the Avenue. This is
the fourth Antica Sartoria boutique in Florida and has been in operation
for three seasons. The other locations are in Downtown at
the Gardens at Palm Beach Gardens, Key West on Duval Street, and
in Naples at the Mercato.
Renee and her husband Curtis first discovered an Antica
Sartoria boutique when they visited Positano, Italy in 2016.
“We felt that the boutique had Florida written all over it,”
said Renee.
The couple loved the store so much that they went to the showroom
and spoke with the designer, Giacomo Cinque, and his business
partner, Riccardo Ruggiti. Four months later, they opened
the first Antica Sartoria in the U.S. and have exclusive rights.
“Since we opened our first store, we haven’t stopped. It’s the
same store in Italy. We have Italian music, and the exact shopping
bags and even the same hangers. A lot of our customers
that come into our store have been to the one in Italy,” said Renee,
adding, “Our store is so unique because you can’t find our
merchandise anywhere else unless you travel to Italy. Many of
our customers are so excited that they can find the clothes here
and they don’t have to travel back to Italy to buy a new dress.”
This is the boutique’s third season in Delray Beach. Many
visitors treat themselves to a vacation wardrobe and many locals
find a unique dress for a night out on the town.
The shopping experience offers personalized service. The
staff helps each client choose just the right outfit for any occasion.
You won’t find someone else wearing the same outfit on
the Avenue or at the beach.
“Everything you see here is from one designer. When you
try on the clothes, you will love the way you feel in them. When
you leave the store, you will feel relaxed and have a good experience
here. It is a completely different shopping experience
than the basic store,” said Renee.
“We only stock so many of each piece that you will not see
someone else wearing it on Atlantic Avenue,” said Renee. “We
offer a boutique atmosphere. We are very hands-on. When our
customers leave, they always say they had so much fun shopping
here.”
Look for the turquoise fish label and stop in Antica Sartoria
for a new beachy chic look! Visit Antica Sartoria on Facebook
DELRAY BEACH TENNIS CENTER
Country Club Vibe For Everyone
BY diane feen | photos by melissa korman
Everyone knows that Delray Beach has a terrific tennis center on
Atlantic Avenue. A few times a year you can hear the cheers and
read about top notch players serving balls at 120 miles per hour.
Pickleball has become contagious at the Delray Beach Tennis CeNter
But what most people don’t realize is that these courts are
easily accessible to the public. And, you don’t have to live
in Delray Beach to use them.
All you have to do is show up with a racquet – or maybe not.
You can either pay for court time (that is reasonably priced) or
join and become a member.
The best part is that by joining the Delray Tennis Center you
automatically become a member of Delray Beach Swim & Tennis
Club. The DBST has 24 Har-Tru courts, a clubhouse, pro shop and
locker rooms.
The Delray Tennis Center - in downtown Delray - is an oasis of
purity and camaraderie. It feels like a country club with 14 Har-
Tru tennis courts, four hard courts and eight pickleball courts.
Activities abound every day – from adult tennis clinics to Round
Robins and yoga classes for pickleball and tennis players.
It also has Jeff Bingo center court as General Manager of Racquet
Sports. Bingo is a tennis legend of sorts. He played his first State
Championship match (at age 11) at Delray Tennis Center and lives
and breathes tennis. His resume would make the most ardent tennis
player green with envy and his excitement for the Delray Tennis
Center is infectious.
72 | november 2019 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
“My dream was to work in a public tennis facility that anyone
can come and play at. I want to give back and create a country
club atmosphere for the public,” said the former Director of
Sports Operation at Addison Reserve Country Club and head
coach at Lynn University.
Under Bingo’s leadership the Delray Tennis Center (and DDST)
has resurfaced the tennis courts, added doubles strategy summer
camps and men’s and ladies’ leagues. “Women have flown here to
take my doubles strategy camp from Atlanta. We teach them to play
offensively and defensively with a focused doubles strategy.”
Bingo has been bullish on Pickleball since its inception. About
100 people a day play pickleball at the Delray Tennis Center,
where Yoga classes for Pickleball players (and tennis players) are
offered. There are also Pickleball Group Clinics, Semi-private and
Private lessons.
According to Bingo people drive from as far away as Palm Beach
and Fort Lauderdale to play pickleball, “mainly because we have
built a reputation that the top Pickle-ballers play at DBTC.”
The same is true of tennis. There are adult tennis clinics for intermediate
and advanced players, and stroke technique and drills for
all level players, including beginners. And, there are private, semi-
If you think you can’t play tennis because you work during
the day think again. They have evening classes and clinics
for all level players, and evening and daytime Cardio Workout
Clinics each week. There are Friday Night Tennis Mixers
where winners can move up or down in progressive mixed
doubles round robins. There is food, drinks and prizes (for a
nominal fee for members and non-members).
There are also Sunday morning tennis mixers with mixed
you want a private tennis lesson there are half hour or onehour
lessons available with one of their 12 tennis pros, or
pickleball pro. There are also lessons available at the Delray
Swim & Tennis Club on Har-Tru and clay courts.
For Junior players there are after-school programs and
summer events. There is also a Delray Beach Youth Tennis
Foundation that offers scholarships for after-school programs
for underserved youths. An elite tennis tournament is
available for juniors as well.
And Bingo knows about Junior tennis. He was a topranked
player as a youngster and his parents moved from
Rochester, New York to Boca West so Bingo could work with
renowned tennis coaches. “I wanted to pursue my dream of
becoming a top tennis player.”
Members and non-members can also rent a ball machine to
hone up on their strokes and cardio endurance. You might also
get a glimpse of tennis legends Serena or Venus Williams or
top ranked player Kevin Anderson or Coco Gauff on the courts.
Are you looking to host a corporate event or outing? Look
no further than the Delray Tennis Center. Guests can play
tennis and then gather at the upstairs pavilion for lunch or
a meeting. There’s a conference room, pro-shop with locker
rooms, racquet stringing and merchandise.
The Delray Tennis Center is a breath of fresh air for anyone
looking to play tennis, pickleball or just share the sporting camaraderie
that the games entrust.
“I feel like the luckiest guy in the world. I get to duplicate
what I’ve been doing at private clubs for the public. I never
thought I would have that chance,” said Bingo.
THE BIG APPLE
Everything You Need
Under One Roof
By Diane Feen | photos by melissa korman
The Big Apple Shopping Bazaar
continues to evolve in its quest to make
shopping not only exciting, but diverse.
Their location is the perfect site for pampering and luxury
– for shopping and enjoying your time just minutes from
downtown Delray Beach.
The size is the same – 35,000-square-feet – and their 32 years
in the business gives them knowledge of what the community
needs. So, what do people need, you ask?
According to Chad Ruggiere, The Big Apple corporate marketing
and branding strategist, the need for great shops and shopping
experiences is paramount. But that is not to say that The
Big Apple Mini Mall has not delved deeper into the needs and
wants of its valued customers.
“We have transformed our popular shopping destination into
Delray Beach’s first Mini-Mall with a state-of-the-art Jewelry Exchange
and Salon & Spa. The salon suites have all been redone
and are beautiful with crystal chandeliers and private access.”
The Big Apple also added a bright upbeat Jewelry Exchange
where jewelers will be housed to cater to your every jewelry
whim. There are currently newly constructed suites available for
Jewelers and Salon owners. You get to own your own business
while in the safety and protection of The Big Apple family.
That also means that many of your marketing and social media
needs will be taken care of their in-house marketing team.
They have videos for merchants that will run on YouTube and
other venues. The goal is to ensure retailers and shop owners
get a steady flow of new business from locals and tourists.
A new day is dawning at The Big Apple. Not only is there a
separate section for the Jewelry Exchange and Salon Suites, but
there are new shop owners with products and services that people
want today.
One example is Healthier Confident You by Jessica Clark. Clark
has an entire program to make your life sweeter, calmer and
stress free. She listens to your needs and creates a program with
CBD products to make you happier and healthier. Her line of CBD
Oils come in capsules, lotions and oil and helps with chronic
pain, anxiety, depression, cancer, nausea, PTSD, Parkinson’s and
other maladies.
MKD Décor has everything you need to renovate your kitchen
or bath. Their countertops are upscale with quality fabrications
that rival any design shop. They sell cabinets, shower doors,
bathroom vanities and countertops in Corian, Quartz, Granite,
Quartzite and more. It’s a design oasis of beautiful kitchen and
bath designs.
Did you buy a new outfit and the pants are too long? Have a
dress that needs tailoring? Look no more. Magic Stitch is in The
Big Apple to meet all your alteration needs. This lost art is often
hard to find, but their tailors can give you a quick turnaround
and expert tailoring.
Everyone who’s been to The Big Apple knows that Ronnie’s
Shoes is the best kept secret. Their fashionable shoes meet every
need – from sandals to sneakers, handbags and walking shoes.
They have perforated leather shoes in all colors and fashion
sandals that will make walking a dream. “We are very fashion
oriented and take pride in always having shoes and bags in the
latest trends.”
Another popular shoe destination is Nobile Shoes. Known
for their comfortable footwear with fashion at the forefront,
they have the largest selection of comfortable shoes in the area.
“When it comes to shoe and leather repair, we believe in complete
customer satisfaction. We will rebuild or repair your footwear
and handbags and recondition the leather.”
If you’re hungry, you’re in luck, The Big Apple has the Delray
Café and Restaurant. They specialize in homemade Mediterranean
food made from scratch. The food is so good that neighboring
business owners are stopping by to eat their delicious falafel,
hummus, meatballs - Moroccan style and Israeli spices. Their
cous cous, salads, tabbouleh, baba ghanoush and homemade
Bourekas are terrific. Made every day, they come filled with feta
and spinach, potato, mushrooms and more. They’re opening up
an ice cream shop next door soon.
Sometimes you just need something to sparkle in your life.
Ken from Silver Styles, Styles Fine Jewelry and Bella’s Bling,
has it all. For 23 years he’s been a fixture at The Big Apple with
fine jewelry, custom designed (or in-stock) pendants, rings and
bracelets in gold and silver with or without diamonds. You can
get cluster diamond earrings or pendant, semi-precious stone
necklaces and matching earrings. He also has Sterling Silver Native
American jewelry, beaded pieces, colorful stone necklaces,
Swarovski crystal jewelry, cubic zirconium rings, and more.
Another great jeweler who’s been at The Big Apple for 26 years
is Charms. They specialize in fine jewelry that is fashionable and
of high quality. There are rings, bangle bracelets, necklaces and
wedding bands in 14K to 18K gold with diamonds or without.
You can even get two-toned white and yellow gold bracelets,
wedding or engagement rings, and watches of all types.
Rose’s Hair Boutique gives upscale haircuts for men and
women at reduced prices ($10 for men, $16 for women) with
the same pampering you get at fancy salons.
Pure CBD Business Owner Rossland Johnson is now at The Big
Apple to help and heal. “You don’t want to miss out on Pure CBD,
that has a full selection of CBD gummies, capsules and other CBD
products to help you sleep, reduce stress, anxiety and other ailments.”
Their products are pure, and grown and manufactured in
Colorado. Pure CBD Owner Johnson recently opened a Fairy Hair
shop nearby with shiny strings to make you and your hair shine.
Currently The Big Apple is looking for new merchants with
an adventurous entrepreneurial spirit. There are special leasing
deals starting with 3 Months Free Rent if you sign up now – or
before December 31st. Whether you are a jeweler, salon and spa
owner or just want to show your wares, The Big Apple is ready
for you in their newly updated mini mall in the heart of Delray.
Remember, it’s not just about being great, it’s also about location
and marketing. They will embrace you and enhance your
Pasqual Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Dr. John R. Pasqual An Expert
In Oral and Facial Surgery
BY nicol jenkins | photos by melissa korman
When looking for a dental specialist and
surgeon who is trusted and experienced in oral
and facial reconstruction, Dr. John R. Pasqual
continues to be a top recommendation.
Pasqual Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery offers only the highest
quality technology such as laser surgery and Three-Dimensional
Scans for the betterment of their patients.
“The goal of providing advanced technology and procedures is for better
healing and decreased discomfort for our patients,” said Dr. Pasqual.
Dr. Pasqual’s staff is trained in Intravenous Sedation within their
state-of-the-art office, which offers private rooms and a relaxing
setting for each patient. They have recently incorporated two lasers
in the practice for surgical cases, which is less painful and provides
for faster recovery times. The office is also utilizing Platelet Rich
Fibrins to accelerate the healing of soft and hard tissue.
“Pasqual Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is different from many dental
or medical clinics; we are a very patient-centric office. We focus
on the patients’ physical as well as emotional wellbeing,” said Dr.
Pasqual. “We understand surgery may be a very stressful time for patients.
Our goal is to meet with patients and family for a consultation,
discuss their current condition, explain all options as well as risks and
benefits of surgery and ultimately perform our very best for them.”
The center utilizes only the best diagnostic equipment including i-
CAT 3D imaging which produces precise high definition 3D cat scans
Dr. Pasqual at the surgical center
of your entire mouth, face and skull so an accurate treatment plan
may be established. Dr. Pasqual’s office is one of the few centers that
utilize this advanced technology that greatly benefits each patient because
of its accuracy. They also offer a procedure called NightLase,
which is a laser treatment used to decrease the frequency of snoring
at night and improve patient’s airways to sleep better. Other offerings
include: Botox and facial fillers, dental implants, wisdom teeth, oral
rehabilitation, and utilizing laser for facial aesthetics to decrease scaring,
wrinkles, and sun spots with minimal downtime and discomfort.
Dr. Pasqual’s experience in the only surgical specialty of dentistry
gives him an edge over many. In fact, oral and maxillofacial surgery
requires years of hospital-based surgical and medical training after
graduation from dental school. John R. Pasqual, D.M.D., P.A. is a boardcertified
oral and maxillofacial surgeon and fellow of the American
Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons as well as fellow of the
American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He is a graduate
and President of the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine.
Dr. Pasqual received post-graduate training in surgery as well as
anesthesia at Case Western Reserve University, MetroHealth Medical
Center, a level I trauma center located in Cleveland, Ohio where he
served as chief resident.
Dr. Pasqual has many accolades and gives back in other areas of
his life, including being the past President of the Palm Beach County
Dental Association, along with being the Chairman of the Board for
the Bethesda Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, and an
active provider at the Caridad Clinic. Dr. Pasqual also maintains
an academic appointment as a clinical associate professor at
the University of Florida as well as Temple University. He was
inducted into the Pierre Fauchard Academy, an international
honor society for illustrating excellence in the specialty of patient
care. In addition, he is a Delegate to the FDA and on the
FDA’s Council for Dental Education and Licensure.
His expertise hasn’t gone unnoticed. His patients come from
Boca Raton, Palm Beach, Jupiter, Miami and really from all over
the world. Dr. Pasqual has even treated many celebrities, worldrenowned
musicians and other high-profile patients.
“I treat several patients that have celebrity-status. However, all
my patients are super-stars to me. It is a true privilege to practice
each and every day. I am humbled that patients that may obtain
medical care anywhere in the world choose my office,” said Dr.
Pasqual. “We continue to grow exponentially every year, and continue
to expand and serve everyone in Palm Beach County.”
Whether it’s a dental implant, complete oral rehabilitation, or
facial reconstruction, Dr. Pasqual finds an inner reward in helping
his patients look and feel their best.
Dr. Pasqual’s patients feel the same about him and praise him
for his care.
“Excellent work Dr. Pasqual. Thank you for your patience
with me. I can truly say, I had an easy, relaxing experience. And
a wonderful staff, very accommodating. Nobody looks forward
to going to the dentist, let alone have oral surgery for an implant
but if you ever find yourself in need of “one of the good ones,” I
hope this review helps put you at ease,” stated a patient.
“As the husband of Dr. Pasqual’s patient who presented him
with a myriad of problems, I will always remain grateful and in
awe of his patience, understanding, competence and kindness.
His technical skills are remarkable, his office and staff are second
to none; but it is his gentle strength and ability to calm and care
for the patient that will be most appreciated. No question went
unanswered; no request seemed unreasonable. The next time you
or your loved one needs care, I suggest that you seek him out. You
cannot do any better than that,” stated a patient’s family member.
Dr. Pasqual plans to continue to expand his practice.
“I am happy to see the exponential growth, which is telling us
that we are doing something right,” he said.
Delray Dermatology + Cosmetic Center
BY Dr. Alexandra Conde-Green, MD, FICS
Delray Dermatology
Welcomes our Plastic Surgeon!
Born in Canada, raised in
Haiti, Plastic Surgery trained in
Brazil and the United States.
In my journey to become a Plastic Surgeon, I completed General
Surgery residency at the University Hospital in Port-au-Prince
during a period of political instability and violence. It was a
struggle to strive for excellence, as the real challenge was not just to
save lives but also to improve the quality of life of my patients. I subsequently
travelled to Brazil, where I completed a Plastic Surgery
residency at the prestigious Ivo Pitanguy Institute. There, I learned
cutting edge surgical techniques developed to satisfy the demands
of the diverse Brazilian and International patients seeking our care.
It was there that I began my research in adipose stem cells. As I
traveled to the United States to present the results of our pioneering
study, I became impressed and overwhelmed by the American
engine of medical research and education. I was fortunate to obtain
a year later a grant to continue my research in adipose-derived
stem cells at the University of Maryland, complete a clinical fellowship
in Burn Surgery at Johns Hopkins University and a six-year
80 | november 2019 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
residency in Plastic and Reconstructive
Surgery at Rutgers New Jersey Medical
School allowing me to work as a plastic
surgeon in the United States.
I am thrilled to be one of the few female
plastic surgeons in the Delray
Beach community and to join the wonderful
team of the Delray Dermatology +
Cosmetic Center headed by the talented
Dr. Francesca Lewis, where I will do
among other surgical procedures skin
cancer excisions and reconstruction after
Mohs procedures. We are now offering
at the center a broad range of plastic
surgery procedures of the face and body
with a particular interest in regenerative
plastic surgery, fat grafting and aesthetic
cosmetic surgery.
A fat grafting procedure transfers fat
from areas in which you have excess
fat, such as the abdomen, back or outer
thighs, and injects it into areas that may
be lacking in volume (such as your face,
hands, breasts, buttocks) or that may
need healing such as burns and scars.
This safe, long-lasting, well-tolerated procedure produces naturallooking
results and great patient satisfaction.
I am enthusiastic in applying the latest plastic surgery techniques
and incorporate innovative uses of regenerative surgery acquired
in Brazil and the United States, the countries with the most plastic
surgery procedures performed in the world according to International
Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS).
With members of our staff fluent in English, French, Portuguese,
Creole and Spanish, we are welcoming all of you to experience the
best in Dermatology, Aesthetics, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
that Delray Dermatology + Cosmetic Center has to offer.
A Gentleman For All Causes
Kevin McNally has Florida roots that go as far
back as some of the trees in Delray Beach.
His grandparents moved to Miami in 1941 and started their family
on US soil after an unfortunate incident. “My grandfather
was a senator in Puerto Rico and one day he was standing next
to the governor and a sniper aimed at the governor but shot my grandfather,”
said McNally, who moved to Delray Beach 27 years ago.
The shooting incident pushed the Serrallés family firmly and
squarely into the Miami terrain. It also changed the trajectory of
their lives. Kevin’s father Gene met his mom June and they moved
to Miami. It also enabled Kevin to go fishing with his grandparents
(on their boat) and imbibe their philosophy that life should be joyful
and positive.
But young Kevin took this mantra a little too literally. “My parents
were concerned about me in high school because I used to get
together with my friends and pull pranks. We had fun.”
To make sure their son got a proper education – and upbringing,
they sent him to a Catholic Benedictine Boarding School in Rhode
Island. There he had to wear a sport jacket and tie to classes and
meals, attend school Saturday mornings and was only allowed a
half hour of TV a night.
To some this might have seemed draconian, but McNally grew to
love it so much that after going home, one year later he returned. “I
missed my friends at boarding school – it matures you to live like that.”
The coat and tie - and structured upbringing - may be precisely
why everyone says that McNally is a perfect gentleman. And, in a
world that’s as expandable and retractable as silly putty, it’s nice to
meet someone who is steady, sturdy and loyal.
When you ask around about McNally you will hear he has a big
heart and rolls up his sleeves and gets things done. That is precisely
why the Achievement Centers for Children & Families chose
him to be their board president.
McNally joined the board of ACCF in 2013 and in 2017 he was
elected board president.
It has been a spiritual and philanthropic match made in heaven.
“Kevin is a leader who offers authenticity, vision and a collaborative
spirit. I thoroughly enjoy working alongside him and if it were
up to me, he would have a lifelong tenure on our board. He truly
cares about the community and the people in it,” said CEO of ACCF
Stephanie Seibel.
Seibel is correct. McNally is dutifully connected to ACCF and is
concerned about the longevity and strength of its leadership and
board. One of his concerns is that “a lot of people drive by and see we
are here, but they don’t understand our impact on the community.”
McNally has a point. It is easy to spot the red and white sign
that stands on Lake Ida near Congress. But what people may not
know is that they provide education, childcare, meals and snacks,
early learning, after-school programs, summer camps and family
strengthening programs.
Children as young as one (and teens) are welcome, while parents
gain access to financial and health counseling, mental health and
crisis specialists.
McNally didn’t understand the need for organizations such as
these before he was firmly ensconced in the working world. “I’m a
firm believer in personal responsibility. I grew up thinking everyone
had loving parents and a good education. But when I owned
my own business, some people I hired really wanted to do the job
but were unable to because they lacked a high school education
and family support.”
It was then that McNally realized the importance of teaching
children basic social and academic skills. “Our early learning programs
set the foundation for lifelong learning. This funnels into our
after-school programs where children get homework help, play,
music, art, dance team, horseback riding and much more!”
McNally wants everyone to know that in addition to helping over
900 children and families a year, ACCF is also one of the cities large
employers with a $4.9 million annual budget and 100 employees.
But to this mild-mannered gentleman shouting to the rafters
is not in the cards. Instead he is steady and thoughtful, kind and
supportive of friends and fellow board members. He is also on the
ACCF Foundation board to ensure the organization is in good financial
stead with longevity.
To make sure his own life runs smoothly McNally finds peace
and solace doing yoga (in the wee hours before work) and doing
underwater freediving. His goal is to go down 200 feet without taking
a breath. So far, he has reached 132 Feet. It may sound a little
risky, but then so does not having a TV (like McNally).
His career started out in sales but blossomed into something as
steady as McNally himself - counting cars for municipalities and
private engineering firms. He started Traffic Survey Specialists 25
years ago despite the fact that his major at University of Florida
was Soil Science.
McNally is the kind of guy who lives in the present but often contemplates
the future. That’s why he is genuinely concerned about
the future of the Achievement Centers. “We need to start thinking
about young board members that recognize the challenges of the
future and can grow with the organization. We have an amazing
board now, but we won’t be here forever.”
But for now McNally is here – happily residing in downtown Delray.
He supports local charities and enjoys fishing, but his heart
belongs to ACCF.
“Kevin is passionate about making Delray a better place, and it
shows through his commitment to the Achievement Centers. He’s
generous with his time and resources; is dedicated to planning the
organization’s future, helping the kids and their families, working
on operational matters, raising funds, building the board and
more,” said friend Elizabeth Kelley Grace.
ingredients (serves 4-5)
Romesco
¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
½ cup almonds
1 cup croutons
8 ounces roasted peppers
¼ cup tomato paste
1 tbs paprika
1 garlic clove; small
2 tbs sherry vinegar
¼ tsp white pepper
1 tsp salt
Bacon Jam
1 pound bacon; ½ inch slices
1 small onion; fine chopped
2 garlic cloves; minced
½ cup brown sugar
3 tbs maple syrup
3 tbs honey
1/3 cup cider vinegar
1 tsp chili powder
1 tsp dry thyme
directions
Romesco
1. Place all ingredients except for olive oil into a blender
and purée.
2. Slowly add olive oil until all is mixed.
3. Remove and reserve.
Scallops
1. Dry scallops with paper towels and season with
salt and pepper on both sides.
2. Add oil to a non-stick sauté pan and heat until very hot.
3. Add scallops to pan, being careful the hot oil doesn’t
splatter and don’t overcrowd pan. Cook scallops
approximately one minute without moving. Scallops
should be golden brown on cooked side. Using tongs, flip
scallops and cook on second side for 30 seconds or until
golden. Remove scallops and set aside. Scallops should
be just turning opaque in center.
Bacon Jam
1. In another sauté pan, cook bacon until crispy. Set bacon
aside on a plate lined with a paper towel. Reserve bacon fat.
2. In same pan with reserved bacon fat, add chopped onion
and garlic and sauté briefly to caramelize.
3. Add brown sugar, maple syrup, honey, vinegar, chili
powder and thyme and cook for about 7-10 minutes.
4. Add reserved chopped bacon and mix all together.
Chorizo and Sweet Potato Hash
1. In a large sauté pan, add butter or bacon fat and heat
until very hot.
2. Sauté chorizo briefly until browned on all sides.
3. Add onion and garlic and sauté until caramelized.
4. Cut asparagus in small pieces, add to pan with parsley
and toss until mixed.
5. Season with salt and pepper.
COPYRIGHTED
To Plate
1. Place Romesco sauce on the bottom of a serving platter.
2. Place chorizo and sweet potato hash on top of romesco
sauce.
3. Lay scallops on top of hash and top each scallop with
bacon jam.
Why Do More and More
Pets Get Cancer?
Cancer in our pets was a minimal concern until the late 1970s
or 1980s. Today it may develop in 1 out of every 3 dogs. Our
domestic canine companions are the most cancer-ridden
creatures on the face of the Earth. Another alarming statistic that
appears to have a bearing on this number is that our canines have
also been deemed as the most toxic animals in America. Why is
this statistic so important?
A common misconception thought by most is that cancer is
genetic. The latest research shows that the genetic factor is only
about 5 percent. The remaining balance of 95 percent is due to
current environmental and congenital issues.
Now, when I speak of environmental issues in this context, I‘m
not only referring to our physical location but also to the environment
we create in our everyday life. This includes our household
cleaners and other chemicals we use in our homes. We must
now factor in the external and internal toxins that our pets are
exposed to.
We protect our pets from lawns treated with chemicals, but
what about the over spray on the street or sidewalk? What about
spraying all those cracks and crevices to kill the weeds? What
about the spraying in the atmosphere such as geoengineering,
mosquito control and who knows what else that settles down to
the ground that our pets are exposed to as well?
If that isn’t bad enough, we have been indoctrinated into visiting
the animal hospital on a scheduled plan for multiple vaccines,
preventative toxic drugs and foods. As the business of medicine has
changed, we are given more and more demands for regular visits.
In the past when we fed our own food to pets, did minimal
vaccines, had no preventative drugs and respected our pets for
what they were, our companion canines averaged a cancer-free
life with some that lived to be well over 20 years old. Treating
our lawns was minimal two generations ago, there were no chemtrails
and very little aerial spraying, life was more natural, and
fewer toxic compounds were used. Cancer and other autoimmune
diseases were not an issue. Today pets’ life spans are half of that.
Has modern medicine made our pets healthier in light of the cancer
statistics?
There has been new research finding that cancer is primarily
an environmental disease that comes and goes in the body. Is
it possible to either treat or prevent it through simple lifestyle
changes? If a dog has the same digestive tract of a wolf and a cat
as that of a jungle cat, would feeding them a species appropriate
diet increase their immune system? If we presented this type
of diet and restricted toxins, could we build a stronger, immune
body that could prevent and heal cancer?
Even in x-rays of dinosaur bones they found cancer cells which
exist in every organism in nature daily. The secret to all good
health is keeping the toxins and destructive compounds away and
adding the restorative nutrients and detoxifiers that allow us to
heal naturally. The body needs components that enter the body in
natural forms of nutrition that allow the body to heal, repair and
fight the never ending assaults it endures daily.
