Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ 17th album
'Ghosteen' is an impressive distillation of the
mournful gothic balladry that Cave and his
band have perfected over the last 35 years. A
stunning artistic achievement that is possibly
Cave’s career-best, ‘Ghosteen’ is a spiritual
journey overflowing lyrically and musically
with haunted visions and recollections, devoid
of rage and anger and instead engulfed by a
sorrowful ethereality.
The first album written in its entirety since the
tragic death of Cave’s teenage son, is as one
would expect, not an easy listen but reveals
itself to be an incredibly rewarding one.
Ultimately, ‘Ghosteen’ is about embracing grief
and holding it dear because grief is all that
remains of the person you loved.

Freya Ridings’ debut album sees the British
singer-songwriter draw lofty likenesses to compatriots

Group at this year's prestigious RTÉ Radio 1
Folk Awards, Ye Vagabonds are the band that
all lovers of Irish Folk Music have been waiting
for since the heyday of the seventies.
Fans of Sweeney's Men, Planxty and Clannad,
as well as innovators from further afield, such
as Steeleye Span and Alan Stivell, will find
much to savour in The Hare's Lament.
Ye Vagabonds have produced a record that,
although steeped in the tradition, is clearly
part of the current Irish folk scene, innovative
and vibrant, alongside their pals Lisa O’Neill
and Lankum.
Ridings proves these comparisons to ring
true, especially on the hit piano ballad ‘Lost
Without You’ and ‘Blackout’ which compound
the feelings of loneliness and isolation that
Ridings calls the overriding universal theme of
the album.
The similarities to Florence Welch are most obvious
on ‘Holy Water’, a rousing gospel inspired
soul number showcasing Ridings’ vibrato-rich
vocal talents which will also interest fans of
Hozier.
Things get murkier and moodier on standout
track ‘Ultraviolet’ that shows Ridings to be both
an accomplished and versatile performer.

There’s such great groove in this album, the bass
and drums are so tasty especially on No Plan.
Everything sits together so well. Shrike is such a
beautiful song, there’s an Irish melancholy to it

WALKING ON CARS are a
four-piece Irish rock band
composed of Patrick Sheehy,
Sorcha Durham, Paul Flannery
and Evan Hadnett. COLOURS
A lot has been said about authenticity, accents
and honesty in relation to Irish music in the last
year. I have been seeing Lankum for the best
part of 15 years since I was just a teenager going
to punk gigs and wondering why there were two
lads playing acoustic guitars and tin whistles.
Well now I know why. What sounded odd to me
then has come to be the most comforting and
real thing I've heard in a long time. An astoundingly
honest and authentic portrait of the last
15 years in this country and city to be exact. The
Young People speaks to the part of anyone who
grew up through times of mass emigration, mass
unemployment and massive amounts of lives
wasted. But that's just what propels the record
with a beautiful spirit of conviction. It's the sound
of a celebratory wake for a city that's all but
nearly gone.
SQUAREHEAD is a garage pop
band based in Dublin, Ireland. It
currently consists of lead singer
/ guitarist Roy Duffy, bassist Ian
McFarlane and Ruan Van Vliet on
drums. High Time

We were mid tour in UK when this album came
out and I have really fond memories of us blasting
this album top to bottom on one of the many van
journeys. The first album seemed like the ceiling
in terms of how the band could contort around
convention, but this album bursts through and
delivers something even more unnerving; while
still managing to seem intimate and (crucially)
fun. It was worth the wait.
THUMPER are a noise-pop sextet
from Dublin, delivering bubblegum
psych through a wall of
sonic death. OUT OF BODY AUTO-
MESSAGE
The album I have listened to most in 2019 has
been 'Dogrel' by 'Fontaines DC'. In my humble
opinion 'Dogrel' is poetic, urgent, raw, articulate,
obtuse, exciting and frankly beautiful in it's lack
of pretension. I play 'Dogrel' to anybody who
is willing to listen, anybody who is willing to be
converted, anybody who loves the immediacy of

I went to a gig recommended by a friend in a
church in Drumcondra last year. Elephant from
Louth came on first, I loved him and bought his
album at the merch table. He was followed by
Joshua. I wasn't expecting two bands I didn't know
to blow me away but they did. I didn't have any
cash left so had to wait until I got home to order
his album and I can't stop listening to him now.

Over the course of just 5 years Bob Dylan had gone from rising to stardom
as a protest singer, becoming the voice of his generation to turning his back
on folk music and going electric, producing a string of albums considered
milestones of classic rock to temporarily burning out and becoming a
recluse. During this reclusive period Dylan found solace in the simple
folk-country songs of the great American south and decamped to Nashville
to record the ‘back-to-basics’ albums ‘John Wesley Harding’ and ‘Nashville
Skyline’.
‘Bootleg Series Vol. 15 Travelin’ Thru 1967-1969’ captures Dylan at what
many consider to be his most relaxed and natural, gone was the mask of
the 60s icon and Dylan was in many ways happy to be out of the limelight.
Presented here are 47 previously unreleased tracks including legendary
recording sessions with Johnny Cash offering a fascinating insight into
Dylan’s working relationship with one of his own heroes, a selection of
recordings featuring legendary bluegrass banjo player Earl Scruggs, as well
as many fabulous early versions of some of the most treasured songs of
Dylan’s 60-year career. A must for any Dylan fan and a crucial addition to the
esteemed Bootleg Series.
