Globe 2019 SUMMER

Stratford-upon-Avon. This one was
less about picking up brochures and
special offers from tour operators
and more about seeing the expedition
vehicles people owned (whether
converted 4-axle army trucks or
rickshaw and pushbike combos) and
talk to them about the journeys they
had made.
It is a gathering of like-minded travel junkies featuring all forms of alternative
transport and mobile accommodation. There is information and guidance on
vehicle conversion, navigation, and
bushcraft plus expert advice from
enthusiastic travellers specialising in
a particular country or region.
In the “Travel Author’s Zone”, I met
Duncan Gough, a previous speaker
at Globetrotters and contributor to
Globe magazine, talking about backroad
biking on the Iberian peninsula. I also saw a presentation from Global
Convoy who have also spoken at Globetrotters Club about their travels around
the world in barely-roadworthy rustbuckets
purchased for a pittance on
the internet.
There were talks taking place in three
halls all day, but the show didn’t
end there. Most visitors stay on site
(in their vehicles or tents) and in the
evening firepits are lit and the beer tent is open. With live music on Friday and
Saturday night, what a wonderful way for the tales of adventure from around
the world to continue late into the night.
