5,325 crimes against children in Scotland were recorded in the last 12 months, a rise of over 30% since 2014/15
NSPCC calls for transformation of support system for children who have been abused
Recorded sexual offences against children have reached an all-time high, data obtained by the NSPCC has revealed.
In Scotland, there were 5,325 recorded offences including rape, grooming and sexual assault against children in 2018/19. Across the
UK, in the same period, there were 76,204 of these offences – an average of one every seven minutes.
Children who suffered sexual abuse will often need extensive support but overstretched services are failing to keep pace with
demand, and the NSPCC is calling for a radical reshaping of how this support is delivered across the country.
A total of 44 out of 45 police forces across the UK provided the NSPCC with the latest data on sexual offences against under 18s
after a Freedom of Information request.
Matt Forde, Head of NSPCC Scotland, said: “Record numbers of child sexual offences means we are facing a nationwide crisis in
the help available for tens of thousands of children. These children are bravely disclosing what happened to them but in too many
cases there is not enough timely, joined up and child-friendly support. Instead they are shunted from overstretched service to service.
“We need a radical rethink in the way we help these young people, otherwise they could struggle for the rest of their lives with long
term, deep seated trauma.”
The charity is calling for the provision of specialised services around the country, with an emphasis on early joined up support from
police, local NHS services, children’s services and advocacy for children who have experienced sexual abuse, offered in childfriendly
spaces.
A Scottish Court Service review of support for vulnerable witnesses first recommended a ‘one-stop-shop’ model - which is a
child-centred service – in 2017. This is based on the Scandinavian Barnahus model, which is a child friendly centre for victims of
abuse that evolved in Nordic countries. These centres integrate medical, therapeutic and justice interventions to help victims of
abuse on the road to recovery. However, there have been no improvements in provision since then and Scotland needs to take urgent
action to improve services for children who have experienced sexual abuse.
Research by NSPCC Scotland, in 2017, showed that despite a greater spotlight on child sexual abuse over the past decade and
several high-profile abuse cases reaching the courts, access to recovery services remains patchy and fragmented.
NSPCC’s Letting The Future In service provides therapeutic support for children who have been sexually abused. Young people
aged 8 to 17-years-old who used the service showed a significant reduction in psychological and behavioural problems.

Compass Chef of the Year Competition
Aberdeen-based Chris Macleod, executive chef at ESS Offshore & Remote - the leading food and support services provider to the
offshore sector - has been crowned Compass Group UK & Ireland senior chef of the year.
This prestigious cooking competition, now in its 20 th year, took place at the beginning of October at The Restaurant Show at
London’s Olympia. Hundreds of chefs from Compass Group UK & Ireland – the UK’s largest food and support services company –
applied to take part in the competition across its three categories: apprentice, junior and senior chef of the year.
The senior competition saw 10 chefs cook four courses in just two hours, including a sustainable fish course and a vegan or
vegetarian starter.
Chris Macleod, executive chef at ESS Offshore & Remote, said of his win: “I am absolutely overwhelmed to have won as it is
something I have dreamt about for a long time. I have competed in the senior chef competition on two previous occasions and to
finally win on the third attempt means the world to me. I have recently become a father, and the added motivation and support I have
received from my family has been amazing. I worked hard to create a menu that was inspiring and met the brief from the judges,
whilst also thinking about our local suppliers and provenance.”
Chris started at ESS Offshore & Remote as senior chef de partie, working at a client’s head office site, and over the last seven and a
half years has worked his way up to his current role of executive chef, where he provides support for the onshore contracts in the
Aberdeen area.

skill and passion in the kitchen and this competition is all about
showing talent in our business – it’s brilliant to see him flying
the flag for ESS chefs. Our chefs have to cook under challenging

clearly demonstrated what can be done using local ingredients,
creativity and dedication. Well done to Chris.”
Compass senior chef of the year was judged by an esteemed
panel of chefs including: celebrity chef, Brian Turner CBE;
Peter Griffiths MBE, president of the British Culinary
Federation; Chris Tanner – one of the founding partners of the
Tanners Restaurant; Simon Hulstone, chef proprietor of
the 1* Michelin The Elephant restaurant; Omero Gallucci, chef
consultant; Nathan Aldous, lead pastry chef for Team England;
and last year’s Compass senior chef of the year winner, Daniel
Lines, Restaurant Associates.

NFU Scotland is now taking
nominations for the position
of Vice President.
The election of this key
appointment within Scottish
agriculture will take place at
the Union’s council meeting
at the Radisson Blu Hotel, 301
Argyle Street, Glasgow G2
8DL on Friday 7 February
2020. The Union’s AGM,
conference and annual dinner
will be staged at the same
venue the day before
(Thursday 6 February).
Any NFUS member can be
nominated for election,
providing they are proposed
and seconded by fellow NFUS
members. Under the terms of
the constitution, those elected
to the position of Vice
President will initially serve
for two years before the post
reverts to an annual election.
The Vice-Presidential post
held by Charlie Adam, having
been elected for the first time
in February 2019, is not open
for contest. Vice President
Martin Kennedy, having first
been elected in February
2017, is currently in his third
year in that post and that position
is open for election.
Mr Kennedy has indicated
that he will be standing for
election for a further term as
Vice President.
The Presidential position is
held for two years and a President
can serve a maximum of
two consecutive two-year
terms. President Andrew
McCornick, having been returned
as President at the 2019 AGM has a further year in office before a new President of NFU Scotland will be elected
in February 2021.Members of NFU Scotland’s council – a body made up from representatives of each of the Union’s 73
branches - will select the successful candidate.
Anyone wishing to stand as Vice President should contact NFU Scotland CEO Scott Walker to obtain a proposal form,
which must then be signed and returned to him by close of play on Wednesday, 11 December 2019. Details on the
candidates will be announced at the Union’s Christmas Press Briefing on Monday 16 December.
Mr Walker commented: “The role of Vice President presents the opportunity of representing Scottish farmers and
crofters during one of the most exciting and challenging times for Scottish agriculture. We invite applications from
those keen to shape our post-Brexit farming industry.
“I would ask that anyone planning to run for Vice President contact me, and I can provide a full explanation of what is
expected from the role. For those keen to represent their fellow Scottish farmers and crofters, this is one of the most
respected positions in our sector. “As we enter a very busy time for the Union, booking has already opened for our
AGM, conference and Annual dinner, being held once again in the Radisson in Glasgow on 6 and 7 February
2020. This event remains one of the highlights on the Scottish agricultural calendar and I urge those interested in
attending to book early to avoid disappointment.”

national celebration of reading
that takes place every November,

18th- 23rd across various
venues in Aberdeenshire.

and have the opportunity
to spend time with others
who share a love of reading,

Week Scotland is “Blether”
