PLATINUM HONOREE MARIA TORROELLA CARNEY, MD Medical Director, Post-Acute Services Chief, Geriatric and Palliative Medicine Northwell Health Dr. Maria Torroella Carney is an internist, geriatrician, and palliative care physician with clinical, administrative, and public health experience. She is currently Medical Director for Post-Acute Services, Chief of the Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at Northwell Health, and an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Dr. Carney received her medical degree at New York Medical College, carried out her residency training in Internal Medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and completed a research-oriented fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. She has dedicated most of her career to the care and advocacy for older adults and vulnerable populations. She was commissioner of the Nassau County Department of Health on Long Island serving a population of 1.3 million residents from 2008-2011. She is the first known physician with a specialty in Geriatric Medicine to serve as commissioner of a health department in New York State. She effectively addressed major challenges including the 2010 H1N1 influenza response, for which she received the BOCES (Board of Cooperative Education Services) Nassau County Council of Superintendents’ Award and New York State Association of County Health Officials’ Public Health Professional of the Year Award. Her career focus has been to promote longevity and educate, advocate, and care for the most vulnerable in society. She is currently focusing on making Northwell an Age-Friendly Health System. Her efforts recently garnered attention in August of this year when she was included in the Crain’s New York Business Notable Women in Health Care of 2019 list. She is a fellow in the American College of Physicians and New York Academy of Medicine. Dr. Carney is a first generation American. Her parents, both Cuban, immigrated to the United States in 1960. She was born in New York City, raised in Texas and New York, the youngest of four children.
