Local maid service, national
Will O’Brien
Freelance Reporter
In summer 2018, while
undergoing chemotherapy,
longtime Tinley Park
resident Donna Cascio
was drained of energy.
Cleaning her house was
the last thing she wanted
to do.
In stepped Denise
Perez, the owner of the
Orland Park franchise of
You’ve Got Maids. Perez,
with the company since
2006 and a franchisee
since 2017, has partnered
with the national nonprofit
Cleaning for a Reason
to help southwest suburban
women like Cascio
for more than a year.
“I’ve had lots of friends
and family members
who’ve had to deal with
chemotherapy, and I’ve
seen how stressful it is
taking the kids to school
and keeping a household
together,” Perez said.
“Being able to provide a
free cleaning to women
battling cancer and being
able to help just a little —
it makes my heart happy.”
Cleaning for a Reason
was established in 2006
and, in partnership with
businesses like Perez’s,
has since provided more
than $10 million in free
cleaning services to women
throughout the country.
Cascio, a retiree who used
to work for the Social
Security Administration,
found out about the organization
through resources
provided to her by the
America Cancer Society.
“During treatment, I
wanted to believe I wasn’t
really experiencing any
side effects but, looking
back, I really did,” Cascio
said, describing the
recurrence of a cancer
and everything else, I just
didn’t have the energy to
clean.”
Perez, along with three
of her employees, came
over to Cascio’s home for
two intense cleaning sessions,
spaced out by about
a month. Both times, the
You’ve Got Maids crew
divvied up the rooms,
vacuumed, scrubbed and
organized thoroughly.
“The job they did would
have taken me all day to
do when I was healthy,”
Cascio said. “I was very
happy with the outcome
and really enjoyed having
them over.”
first women Perez helped
through Cleaning for a
VETERANS DAY
Orland Park adds 16 more names to its memorial
LAURIE FANELLI
Freelance Reporter
On the 11th day of the
11th month at the 11th
hour – a time marking the
armistice signed between
the Allies of World War
I and Germany – the Village
of Orland Park welcomed
the community to
the Civic Center for its
annual Veterans Day Ceremony.
Along with remarks
from Veterans Program
Assistant Darryl Wertheim
and Mayor Keith Pekau,
performances of “The
Star-Spangled Banner”
and “God Bless America”
by Tina Fischer and a
prayer delivered by Reverend
Don Borling, the
Monday, Nov. 11 ceremony
was highlighted by the
unveiling of 16 newly engraved
names of veterans
on the Ara Pace – Place of
Peace memorial.
“This event is always
pretty special because today
– Veterans Day – we
honor all the veterans past,
present and future,” Wertheim
said. “So, today is a
special day. We have 16
people’s names engraved
on our memorial. The oldest
one is from 1943 when
he entered into service as a
B-17 pilot and we have a
young gentleman who was
discharged from the service
in 2018 so it’s kind of
special to have such a wide
range.”
Both the B-17 pilot,
Lawrence E. Jensen, Sr.,
and Daniel Molinari, who
served in the U.S. Marine
Corps from 2016 to 2018,
were among the veterans
in attendance at the ceremony.
“We have thousands of
names out on the walls
and it’s an honor to talk
to all the families who put
their veteran’s name on the
wall,” Wertheim said. “It’s
a very special experience.
We talk in length about
their service, what they did
and where they’re at.”
American Legion Orland
Memorial Post 111
and Orland-Palos Reber-
Tesmond VFW Memorial
Post 2604 members were
on-hand to present the colors
and perform a rifle volley
as “Taps” was played.
Eighth graders from Orland
Jr. High School were
also in attendance to honor
veterans and support their
classmates Riley McDoniel
and Zach Supanich who
participated in the wreath
laying ceremony.
Veterans Day may be
over, but residents can
continue to show their
support for members of
the military with a variety
of programs offered by
the Orland Park Veterans
Commission.
“The Village of Orland
Park Veterans Commission,
which I’m part of
also, has activities to support
veterans year round,”
Wertheim said. “We support
three groups that send
Christmas packages – and
packages on a monthly
basis – to troops that are
in harm’s way. This year,
the Village of Orland Park
had a program with school
children. Nine schools participated
and created about
800 Christmas cards that
will be sent on Nov. 19
to men and women in the
military stationed all over
the world.”
In February, the Veterans
Commission will be
hosting a new expo raising
awareness of the experiences
of Vietnam veterans
who were exposed to
Agent Orange. The event
Orland Park man advocates importance
of CPR after he saved a stranger’s life
Alyssa Groh, Freelance Reporter
After saving the life of a stranger who
was in cardiac arrest on a Swallow Cliff
Woods trail, Thomas O’Brien, of Orland
Park, is raising awareness on the importance
of being CPR certified.
Just over a year ago, on Sept. 14, 2018,
Thomas and his wife, Deb, went running
on the Swallow Cliff Woods trail at a time
they typically do not run. During the run,
Deb got ahead of him. As Thomas was
running, he noticed a man, who would later
be identified as Denis Fellmann, also of
Orland Park, lying face down on the trail.
“There was a man lying face down on
the trail, and he wasn’t moving at all, so
I flipped him over,” Thomas said. “He
wasn’t breathing and his eyes weren’t
open. He was in big trouble.”
After rolling him over, Thomas immediately
performed CPR, in which he
maintains certification as an optometrist.
Thomas knew he had to act quickly to
help save this man. He also knew Fellmann
had not been down for long, as Deb,
a nurse, had just passed by and Fellmann
was not lying on the ground at that point.
Realizing the severity of the situation,
Thomas dialed 911, and soon first
responders arrived and transported Fellmann
to the hospital.
Deb, unaware of what happened, found
Thomas sitting on a bench with his head
in his hands.
“We always meet at the same point
when we are done running, and Tom was
sitting on one of the benches, and he had
his head down in his hands and he was
crying,” Deb said. “I asked what happened,
and all he kept mumbling was, ‘I
don’t think I saved him. I tried. I tried. I
don’t think I helped him.’”
Nearly two months later in November,
Denis’ wife, Emily, contacted the police
department to ask if they could give her
Thomas’ number to thank him for saving
her husband’s life.
“Right away, my sister wanted to find
the person who found Denis, and I wasn’t
ready for that,” Emily said. “I thought,
when I find the person, I want to be able
to tell them good news, and for a while I
couldn’t do that. I wanted to call him, but
I wanted to wait until we had good news.”
Pictured are Denis (seated) and Emily
Fellman, and Thomas O’Brien, the first
time they formally met in November
of 2018 at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.
O’Brien performed CPR that September
to help save Denis’ life after he went into
cardiac arrest on a Swallow Cliff Woods
trail. Photo submitted
When Denis arrived to Palos Community
Hospital, he was in a coma for
awhile, and doctors told Emily to start
preparing his affairs because things did
not look good.
“We didn’t know for a while how he
was going to be,” Emily said. “It was really
rough. Most people don’t survive that.”
But Denis survived, thanks in large part
to Thomas’ quick actions.
Just over a year later, Denis is back to
work four days a week.
The two families, who were complete
strangers, are now very close. They frequently
get together, and Thomas supports
Denis in his recovery, even taking
him to practice his driving.
Emily said when she reached out to
Thomas, she just wanted to thank him;
she never expected him to remain in their
lives and become good friends.
“It shows the type of people Tom and
Deb are,” Emily said. “I say if you could
pick someone to save your life, it would
be them.”
The O’Briens’ church, All Saints Lutheran
in Orland Park, has hosted a few
CPR classes.
Orland Park Village Board
Officials are split on moving to a
Committee of the Whole structure
Jon DePaolis
Freelance Reporter
The way the Orland
Park Village Board conducts
its meetings may
soon be changing.
The Village Board cast
a 4-3 nonbinding consensus
vote Nov. 4 to instruct
staff to come up with a
possible policy change
to the board’s committee
meetings. Trustees
Dan Calandriello, James
Dodge and Kathleen Fenton
cast the dissenting
votes.
Under the proposed
change, the board would
shift from having six separate
committees meeting
once a month on an
alternating schedule prior
to full board meetings to
one full Committee of the
Whole prior to each Village
Board meeting.
The discussion came
as a result of some suggestions
made by Trustee
William Healy at the Oct.
21 Village Board meeting.
Then, he suggested
establishing a rule that in
order to be able to put an
item on the Village Board
meeting agenda, it would
need to come from the
mayor, the Village manager
or two trustees.
“It is clear that this rule
would prevent reckless
self-aggrandizing, [and]
duplicitous paranoid measures
from making it to
the agenda and wasting
everyone’s time and money,”
Healy said.
He also recommended
that only the mayor individually,
Village manager
individually or two trustees
collectively could authorize
the Village to pay
for legal advice.
“It is clear that one person’s
self-interest ... and
misguided efforts can cost
the Village significant legal
fees in chasing items if
they are a complete waste
of time,” Healy said.
Later in that meeting,
Dodge said the board
would need to take up
Healy’s comments.
“Because, quite frankly,
I don’t think under Illinois
law you can set such a
standard to prevent a duly
elected official from putting
an item on a board
agenda for proper discussion,”
Dodge said.
Orland Park Village
Manager George Koczwara
laid out the preliminary
proposals from staff
at the Nov. 4 meeting. He
said they were based on
practices in other communities.
Koczwara said a form
could be created to on
which a trustee would
place an item he or she
wants on a future agenda
— including the expenditure
of money, modifications
to the Village code,
formation or modification
of Village policies or a
committee, introduction
of an ordinance or resolution,
and appropriation of
Village legal staff time.
The catch? It would
need support from three
other trustees prior to it
being placed on the agenda.
Koczwara also presented
a proposal that would
not allow previously defeated
items to be placed
on a board agenda for at
least a year.
Several trustees took
issue with those two proposals,
in particular.
“We’re all elected officials,
and we all have a
responsibility to do what
we feel is right for the
residents and the Village,”
Fenton said. “It seems like
our ability to be an elected
official is being taken
away from us — micromanaged
or turned into a
dictatorship instead of a
democracy. I don’t think
any of us up here are going
to put something on
the agenda that is going to
cost the Village money.”
Calandriello agreed.
“All seven of us have
a voice,” he said. “We’ve
been elected by the residents.
If it is really an
issue of abuse, or if they
think a trustee is abusing
their power, I’m sure there
is a mechanism to punish
that trustee in our ordinances.”
Dodge took a stronger
stance.
“It’s basically, from my
point of view, just a very
simple way to change the
rules,” Dodge said. “This
is a perfectly effective
way for a 4-3 majority to
control access to everything.”
But the ideas had support
from the other board
members, including Trustee
Michael Milani, who
confirmed with Koczwara
that the initiatives would
not violate free speech or
Open Meetings Act laws.
“I think this is a process
that will actually help us:
put some efficiency into
our committees [and] our
board meetings; we can
lower our legal fees; we
can free up our clerical resources;
and, most importantly,
stop wasting our
time with agenda items
that serve no purpose and
get nowhere,” Milani said.
Mayor Keith Pekau said
any concerns about trustees
not being able to bring
an item to the floor would
be solved by moving to a
Committee of the Whole
structure, because agenda
items would first go there
to be discussed and then
either forwarded onto the
Village Board agenda or
not. Thus, it would eliminate
the need for a form.
In explaining the concept
of changing the committee
structure, Koczwara
said the Committee
of the Whole would discuss
the expenditure of
money over $250,000,
development agreement,
amending the Village
code, and the implementation
or modification of
policies.
“Other than that, the
rest of the items would go
directly to the Board of
Trustees at a full [meeting],”
he said, noting the
board could create its own
rules for what it looked at
and what it did not regarding
the Committee of the
Whole.
Fenton said the Village
previously moved away
from Committee of the
Whole meetings in the
early 1990s, because the
Village Board at the time
felt it was inefficient for
both staff and the elected
officials. She also said the
Committee of the Whole
Round It Up
A brief recap of action and discussion from the
Nov. 4 meeting of the Orland Park Village Board.
• In a 4-3 vote, the Village Board members
shot down a resolution that would eliminate the
Village president position from Illinois Municipal
Retirement Fund eligibility immediately, as
opposed to the end of the term. Trustees James
Dodge, Dan Calandriello and Kathleen Fenton
voted in favor of the item. Mayor Keith Pekau
reiterated his stance that he has never and will
never take part in IMRF.
• During the Public Works Committee meeting,
trustees voted 2-0 to recommend the Village
Board approve renewing its agreement with
the Illinois Department of Central Management
Services for purchase of road salt through the
Joint Purchasing Program. The vendor, if approved,
will be Compass Minerals America Inc., of Kansas,
and the price per ton of salt would be $78.86. Per
the agreement, if approved, the Village is required
to purchase at least 3,840 tons of salt — meaning
at minimum, an expenditure $302,822.40
meetings tended to take
longer than the existing
committee structure.
Calandriello said he
was hesitant to change
from the current committee
structure because,
under Committee of the
Whole, it would negate
the trustees’ ability to get
“two bites at the apple”
for certain agenda items
that would go straight to
the Village Board meeting.
He said the current
structure allows for two
meetings or sometimes a
full month to fully digest
an item, and make an educated
and informed decision
prior to the vote.
Pekau offered some
changes to what Koczwara
presented that could
alleviate Calandriello’s
concerns, such as tweaking
the $250,000 threshold
for expenditure items
to anything that is outside
of the budgeted amount.
“If the bid is within the
budget, then it should go
to the board floor and be
discussed,” Pekau said.
9
“If it is outside of what we
discussed, then it should
be to the Committee of
the Whole, because that
will give us the two bites
at the apple.”
After the consensus
vote, Pekau instructed
staff to bring the matter
back up for a formal vote
at a future meeting.
Stellwagen Farm earns
Landmark Illinois award
The Village Board also
celebrated Stellwagen
Farm receiving an award
from Landmark Illinois
for the farm’s rehabilitation
of 10 of its buildings.
Fenton said the award
— which signifies that the
farm is an important landmark
in not only Orland
Park but also Illinois —
will help when it comes to
applying for grants.
“It puts us on the map,”
Fenton said.
Fenton added that the
farm was just one of nine
recipients of the award,
which was presented in
October.

Coyotes preparing for winter, may be more visible in fall
Submitted by Village of
Orland Park
Coyotes have been in
Orland Park since the late
1970s when they used area
railroad tracks as highways
into Chicago’s south suburbs.
And the population is
growing because coyotes
have no natural predators.
It is not uncommon to
see coyotes in packs of as
many as eight. The coyotes’
breeding time is normally
in February and March,
with their pups being born
in the spring, April and
May. Coyotes can have
anywhere from 5-7 pups in
a litter.
Coyotes feed on rabbits
and mice but eat bird seed
as well as all other animals
and birds that feed on the
seed. The Village recommends
residents who feed
birds and see coyotes stop
feeding the birds for at least
a month.
And it is illegal to ground
feed any animals or birds in
the Village.
Residents who encounter
a coyote are cautioned
to never run from it or take
their eyes off of it. Residents
who encounter coyotes
should yell, scream
and wave their arms, making
themselves look larger
than they actually are.
When that fails, the Village
noted people should throw
anything that is handy at
the coyote or carry an air
horn.
Residents also are encouraged
to always carry a
cellphone when out walking
or walking their dogs.
Walkers are encouraged to
go to the nearest house for
help if needed and ask that
the homeowner call 911 so
that a police officer can respond.
The Village also stressed
the important of not leaving
a family dog or cat to wander
alone outside.
Orland Park is surrounded
by forest preserves, and
the village has wildlife
present in the environment.
There is no need to call
the police department when
coyotes are spotted in the
village unless the animals
are hurt or injured.
Residents with additional
questions about wildlife
in the village may contact
Orland Park Police Animal
Control Officer Steve
Stronk at the Police Department’s
non-emergency
number, (708) 349-4111.
Submitted by Orland
Township
Cheers
The Orland Township
Holiday Program has been
assisting local families
in need for more than 30
years. And the Township
is preparing for the 2019
holiday season with donations
for the program now
being accepted.
The majority of the Holiday
Program recipients
are clients of the Orland
Township Food Pantry,
which serves more than
300 families a month.
Through the generosity
There are several ways
to participate in the Orland
Township Holiday Program,
as follows.
• Giving Tree — For
those who enjoy making
the holidays special for
children, the Giving Tree
contains tags with wish
lists for children from newborns
up to age 16. People
can visit the Township office,
14807 S. Ravinia Ave.
in Orland Park, to choose
tags from the giving tree.
• Adopt-A-Family —
Residents can make the
holidays brighter for an entire
family by filling their
wish lists of toys, clothing
and other household items.
This is a popular idea for
work, church, school and
social groups. To inquire
about the Adopt-A-Family
program, contact Lindsay
at (708) 403-4222 or by
email at LindsayT@orlandtownship.org.
• Item Donations —
Contributions of food,
toys, clothing and personal
items can be dropped off
at the Township. See the
Township website, orlandtownship.org,
for a list of
suggested items. Gift and
clothing items for teenagers
and adults are usually
in short supply and greatly
appreciated, as are monetary
donations.
Donations for the
Holiday Program can be
dropped off at the Township
office during regular
business hours: 8 a.m.-
4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday
(until 6 p.m.). Additionally,
the Township will offer
the following extended
People should deliver
donations for the Holiday
Program by Dec. 12 to
give Township personnel
time to sort and organize.
FROM THE TINLEY JUNCTION
Dentist leads Real Men
Wear Pink fundraising
campaign in south suburbs
Whether breast cancer,
prostate cancer, lung cancer,
or any other type of
cancers, today, nearly everyone
has been impacted
by cancer in one way or
another.
For Dr. Ralph Ginn,
dentist at Tinley Park’s
My Care Dental, cancer
has been a part of his life
in many ways. Every day,
he looks for oral cancers
while examining his patients
and, like many others,
he has been called to
support loved ones who
received the diagnosis.
Although he spends a lot
of time educating people
about oral cancers, Ginn
knew he could do more.
Then last year, a longtime
patient educated him about
the American Cancer Society’s
Real Men Wear Pink
campaign, which happens
every year during Breast
Cancer Awareness Month.
Throughout the month
of October, men who participate
in the Real Men
Wear Pink campaign commit
to wearing pink every
day of the month and raising
$2,500 to support the
American Cancer Society
and its programs.
This year, the south suburban
campaign has a goal
to raise a total of $50,000.
As of press time, Ginn was
leading the pack, raising
almost $5,000 himself.
“I made sure that this
money stays close to Tinley
Park and helps families
in Tinley Park, because I
truthfully believe that if
you help your neighbor
next to you and hold their
hand, it’s a stronger bond
and it goes on and on from
there,” he said.
FROM THE LOCKPORT LEGEND
Fairmont School gets
lesson from state
legislators
In preparation for the Illinois
constitution test, students
at Fairmont School
were given the ultimate
learning tool in the form
of a presentation by State
legislators.
The group of seventhand
eighth-grade students
gathered at noon on Nov. 1
to hear presentations from
State Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant,
U.S. Rep. Dan
Lipinski and State Rep.
John Connor on topics of
civics and the process of
passing laws.
Bertino-Tarrant opened
the discussion by quizzing
students on the three
branches of government,
the roles of senators and
representatives, and the
purpose of making laws.
Shortly after, Lipinski arrived
and detailed his experiences
on the job, his
trips to Washington, D.C,
and the differences between
creating State and
national laws.
Students were invited to
give suggestions for a law
they would like passed to
complete a scenario in a
“quick law scenario.” The
law chosen to implement
was a $1,000 fine for littering,
reflecting the garbage
service debate with which
residents of Fairmont have
dealt firsthand. Bertino-
Tarrant then walked students
through the steps
it would take to draft the
proposed law, including
getting approval by Rep.
Lipinski and eventually
handing it off to the governor.
“It’s a complicated process,”
Lipinski explained
to the class, “But it’s set
up that way to get everyone
to agree on making
a new law. People have
lots of different needs and
opinions, and my job is to
find the best way of how to
help them.”
FROM THE MOKENA MESSENGER
Mokena’s own ‘Golden
Girls’ honored for 50
years of service
Three women — Carmen
Smallwood, Joan
Fleckenstein and Virginia
Backhus — attended their
first few meetings of the
then recently formed Mokena
Woman’s Club in
1969.
Fifty years later, at the
club’s Oct. 14 monthly
gathering, these Mokena
residents were recognized
in a surprise celebration
for their golden anniversaries.
“I was flabbergasted,”
Fleckenstein said of the
experience. “I did not expect
it.”
Smallwood had a similar
reaction.
“I was really totally
stunned,” she said. “I
thought, ‘How could they
have done all of this without
us knowing?’ It’s always
an honor when your
fellow club members recognize
you like that.”
Club historian Joann
Jeffers, who also is first
vice president and parliamentary
advisor, went
through many past club
photos and archives to prepare
a scrapbook for each
of the ladies as a keepsake.
While the club’s future
projects will continue to
serve the changing needs
of the times — especially
in the areas of education,
scholarships, politics and
charitable giving for the
community — the focus
will stay the same as it has
always been in the past.
“Our Mokena Woman’s
Club motto is, ‘Where
community service and
friendship meet,’ and we
really hold true to that,”
Jeffers said. “One person
can do a little, but a whole
group of people can do a
lot. Our focus has always
been service, and the reward
from that service is
the friendships that are
formed.”
FROM THE FRANKFORT STATION
Scouts celebrated with
Eagle Court of Honor
ceremony
The members of Frankfort
Boy Scout Troop 270
are well-known throughout
the community. From
running the Frankfort Fall
Fest parking lot to hosting
Winter on the Green
events to coordinating
food drives for the Frankfort
Food Pantry, these
Scouts are always ready to
help in any way they can.
On Nov. 3, Michael
Clarkin, Alex Desjardins,
Rory Hanlon, Jake Leonard,
Matthew Lexow and
Justin Murray of Troop
270 participated in an
Eagle Court of Honor ceremony
commemorating
each young man’s achievement
of attaining Scouting’s
highest rank of Eagle
Scout.
Jim Hurley, who serves
as Scoutmaster of Troop
270 along with Arnaud
Desjardins, explained that
the event was a milestone
for the group.
“This past year, we
reached 100 Eagles, so
now we’re above 100,”
Hurley said, adding he was
grateful to all the adults
who help run the program.
“These boys have done a
fantastic job supporting
the community through
different service projects,
Eagle projects and food
drives. I’m really, really
proud of them.”
Troop 270 Committee
Chairman Chuck Rudy
said he was also proud of
the new Eagle Scouts especially
because only “3
FROM THE NEW LENOX PATRIOT
Man in Navy does 20-mile
ruck march for veteran
suicide awareness
Twenty miles for the 20
veterans who die by suicide
everyday.
That is what New Lenox
resident Ryan Brazel —
who has been in the Navy
since he was 18, enlisting
in the wake of Sept. 11 —
did Nov. 2.
That Saturday was cold,
and he had an extra 35-40
pounds on his back, with
blistered and bloody feet,
but the ruck march was
something he had to do.
Brazel’s trek started at
his home in New Lenox,
went down Nelson Road to
Old Plank Road Trail, and
he walked to Frankfort and
just a little past the bridge
that goes over LaGrange
Road, then turned around
and walked to Harry E.
Anderson VFW Post 9545
in New Lenox to finish.
“The number 20 always
stuck out to me, because
the suicides among the active
duty veterans is 20 a
day, 7,300 a year, which
is more than the number
we had killed in action in
Afghanistan and Iraq the
entire time we’ve been
there,” Brazel said. “I
did pushups every day at
11:11, being the 11th day
of the 11th month, which
is Veterans Day. I figured
I’d knock out 20 pushups
every day to represent the
20 that commit suicide.
It’s something I’ve done to
raise awareness.”
Shorewood Home & Auto
has groundbreaking for
future 159th Street facility
Shorewood Home &
Auto has come a long way
from when it opened as a
hardware store in 1974.
From the original Shorewood
location, the business
opened a second spot
in Crete in 2008 before
acquiring Circle Tractor
this past January in Homer
Glen, which was a John
Deere dealer. After arriving
in Homer, the business
realized the space it
acquired was not right for
the owners’ vision.
“Our brand is a lot of
display, a nice big service
shop area, so we decided
that building would not
work for us there, and decided
to look for land or a
building,” co-owner Kaj
Moyer said.
As a result, the business
found a spot for a
new 27,000-square-foot
facility at 13639 159th
St. and celebrated with a
groundbreaking held Oct.
30 with Village of Homer
Glen officials. The plan is
for the new building to be
ready this coming July or
August.
“We’re looking forward
to the new building, for
sure,” Moyer said.
From the Editor
Learn to save lives
BILL JONES
bill@opprairie.com
Before the birth of
our first child, my
wife and I took all
sorts of classes to gather
any information we could
before the hospital sent us
home with another human
being in our care. Most
of them were offered free
by the hospital, but one
of them cost $15: infant,
child and adult CPR.
There, we learned
how to perform CPR on
people of all ages in the
event that we encounter
someone not breathing.
We learned how to check
the airway on a choking
victim, how to properly
use an AED and much
more.
Thankfully, I’ve never
had to employ any of the
things I learned in
that class, and I hope I
make it through the rest
of my life with it proving
to be an unnecessary
$15 and three hours
spent.
But I’m happy we did
it either way — just in
case. And I was little bit
ashamed that we never
took the time up until that
point to do so.
As Thomas O’Brien
points out in this week’s
news cover story on Page
5, survival rates of cardiac
arrest drop significantly
outside of a hospital,
in large part because
too few people know how
to perform CPR or use
an AED. Neither of these
things are too complicated;
it just takes a little
bit of time and maybe a
few bucks to learn. And
it’s easy enough to find
places offering the education.
So, I’d like to echo his
call by asking readers
to take the time to learn
these skills. It could save
someone’s life.

Resident Poet
‘In the Silence’
Susanne Cabrini Marie
Orland Park resident
(For my friend the Rev.
Michael G. Foley)
After a long, difficult
day, set aside some
quiet time;
Because everybody
needs it--be they old or
in their prime.
It could be after dinner
or before you go to bed.
Just take a little while to
clear your weary head.
Shut the door on all the
noise; put in earplugs;
nix the light;
Then God will come to
you in the silence of the
night.
His voice won’t be like
thunder—all loud and
crude and brash.
It’ll be a soothing whisper
that’ll help you to
relax!
First remember any
good things that have
happened during the
day.
Thank Christ for blessings
great and small that
He has sent your way.
In quietude, you will
hear Him deep within
your heart,
Always ready to forgive,
heal and give a
brand new start!
Go to confession when
you know you’ve really
sinned,
Or just need to talk
about what’s deep “beneath
your skin”.
Say some prayers of
gratitude before exiting
the church,
For God is with you
now—He won’t leave
you “in the lurch”!

Family shares pumpkin tradition
Bill Jones, Editor
Holidays are filled with
traditions big and small
for many families. Those
traditions help give special
meaning to those big
days. They allow generations
to pass things along
to the next. They create
time for bonding. And
they can be tough to let
go.
For as long as she can
remember, Jade Hamilton,
17, of Orland Park,
has been carving pumpkins
for Halloween with
her family.
“As long as they could
put me in a chair, I was in
it, digging out the pumpkin
seeds,” Jade said with
a laugh.
For Jade and her parents,
Kristin and Ron,
the tradition developed
into an annual thing.
And it all starts with
Jade coming up with a
design.
“She is just very, very
creative, always has
been,” Kristin wrote in
an email to The Orland
Park Prairie. “She is in
numerous art class in
high school — won second
place last year for her
sculpture and honorable
mention the year before
for her drawings. She also
runs art classes for The
Bridge Teen Center.”
From there, Ron gets
carving, and Kristin
takes the pictures, many
of which have been submitted
over the years to
The Prairie’s Halloween
Pumpkin-Carving Contests.
“It’s definitely a team
effort,” Jade said. “That
just makes it a lot more
fun.”
Some years, their carvings
have been crafted
with a special ingredient:
a pumpkin they grew
themselves. Jade said
the family has a summer
home in Michigan, where
they grow the pumpkins.
“Sometimes they come
out weird, but we make it
work,” she said.
In fact, in 2017, a
unique shape helped inspire
a pumpkin based on
the character Sloth from
“The Gooines.” The family
has also painted pumpkins
and carved designs
into them. But Jade said
her favorite was a year
they had a big pumpkin
eating a little one, with
monster teeth giving the
former its bite.
“It just came out so perfect,”
she said.
This year’s pumpkin
— pictured on the Life &
Arts cover — looks like
an eyeball, complete with
a socket, lashes and some
bloodshot accents. Jade,
busy with work and lacrosse,
said the goal was
to come up with something
simpler this year.
Kristin added, “This
year we were all working,
so we wanted to still do it
but something easier than
carving the entire pumpkin,
so this is what we
came up with this year.”
It also may mark their
last as a group.
“She will be going
away to college next year,
so she will no longer be
Pictured is a pumpkin Jade Hamilton, 17, and her family
created for Halloween 2017. Photo submitted
home to help,” Kristin
wrote.
But Jade — who is committed
to Indiana Tech in
Fort Wayne for lacrosse
— is not so sure this was
the end. After all, she
said, the family’s place in
Michigan is only an hourand-a-half
from school.
“Maybe we’ll meet in
the middle,” she said.
The Dish
Barrel Club more than the sum of its steaks, spirits and stogies
Eatery switches
vibes from lunch to
dinner, focuses on
gatherings
Bill Jones, Editor
The Barrel Club’s Traces of Buffalo whiskey flight ($22) is one of 10 that offer guests
tastes of three different spirits — in this case W.L. Weller Special Reserve, E.H.
Taylor Small Batch and George Stagg Jr. — alongside optional bitters. Photos by Bill
Jones/22nd Century Media
At a quick glance, The
Barrel Club looks on paper
like something of a
throwback, with a steakheavy
dinner menu, a
drinks list that leans hard
on bourbon and a showcase
of cigar selections
for the smokers.
Make no mistake: Spirits
are the star of the show
at The Barrel Club. From
the membership program
that for $39 monthly sends
customers home with different
bottles of the Barrel
Club’s spirits and accessories
— think branded shot
glasses, ice ball silicones
and rocks glasses — to a
list that rivals most city
establishments for whiskey
enthusiasts, drinks are
undoubtedly the No. 1 attraction
at the Oak Lawn
establishment.
But the facade of the
building on 111th Street
near Cicero Avenue is
enough to let passersby
know the offerings are
more than first meets the
eye. The modern confines
hint at the wines Barrel
Club also proudly offers.
A patio with a fire pit welcomes
musical acts and
outdoor loungers alike.
The event spaces are designed
to attract both corporate
meetings and small
birthday gatherings (ask
to see The Little Pub). And
the lunch menu caters to a
family crowd more than
the nightlife seekers one
might otherwise imagine.
Barrel Club strives to be
more than the typical suburban
eatery, and it strives
to please a lot of different
people in the process.
As Director of Operations
April Koerber, an
Orland Parker, puts it, “It’s
downtown dining on the
south side of Chicago. The
food looks like a masterpiece.”
Behind that food is executive
chef Carlos De-
Leon, who approaches an
ingredient-focused menu
with a “less is best on the
plate” philosophy.
“The products that we
use here are great,” he
said.
They use Duke’s mayonnaise,
for instance, simply
because, DeLeon said,
“It’s delicious, the king of
mayos.”
Diners will find that
on the lobster roll ($16),
which Koerber cites as a
favorite for the simplicity
of its Maine lobster, mayo,
Old Bay and brioche.
The kitchen at Barrel
Club also takes the time
to make its own creme
fraiche — a three-day
process. And the roasted
chicken (for 2, $29) —
which is sliced in front of
customers — goes through
a 48-hour process.
“What you get out of
it is a crisp, seasoned-allthe-way-through
chicken,”
DeLeon said.
Among the sandwich
standouts for the lunch
crowd is the Cuban ($13),
featuring pork carnitas,
smoked ham, Chihuahua
cheese, dill pickle and
mustard on a telera roll.
“Its not a traditional Cuban,
but it’s damn close,”
DeLeon said.
The restaurant also has
some fun mixing influences
with items like the potato
and cheese pierogies
($9), which feature Yukon
Gold potatoes and Chihuahua
cheese for a combination
that is part Polish,
part Mexican, according to
DeLeon. Giardiniera finds
its way into Barrel Club’s
chopped salad ($13) for a
distinct Chicago tweak to
the classic.
And gluten-free and
vegetarians diners are not
forgotten, with options for
both highlighted on the
menus.
“You just try to keep it
balanced for people with
allergies,” DeLeon said.
The Barrel Club maintains
membership with the
Orland Park Area Chamber
of Commerce, and
Koerber, who previously
worked with several businesses
in Orland Park, said
she made the jump for a
new opportunity to work
with a restaurant that does
a spirits club. It also gives
her the opportunity to continue
to organize events,
including benefits for local
organizations Barrel Club
has done since its recent
opening.
Koerber said she has enjoyed
Farley aiding Michigan State in swimming
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Last season, former
Sandburg swimming
standout Aidan Farley
posted the third all-time
Michigan State time in
the 100-yard freestyle
(44.29 seconds) and was
fourth all-time in the 200
free and 800 free relay
split time and helped the
400 free relay team to the
school’s second fastest
time.
This year, the junior
is not wasting any time
dominating. In a loss to
Northwestern on Nov.
2, Farley helped the 200
free relay team break a
home pool record with a
1:20.56. He also won the
100, 200 and 500 freestyle
events.
“Aidan Farley had probably
the best weekend I’ve
ever seen by a swimmer
here, maybe ever,” Spartans
coach Matt Gianiodis
said in a news release.
Farley enjoyed being
a part of history. “It was
really cool,” he said in a
news release. “I didn’t
know we were in contention
of breaking the pool
record so when I heard it
over the loudspeaker, that
was really awesome.”
Changes in gymnastics
The area girls gymnastics
scene is vastly different
this season.
For many years, Andrew
had its own program
Starting this season all
three District 230 teams
will form a co-op team,
which will be based at Andrew.
The boys gymnastics
team and the boys and
girls lacrosse teams have
all three district schools
banded together.
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
10 Questions
with Colleen Donnell
Colleen Donnell is a
junior at Sandburg. She’s
a top swimmer for the
Eagles and also plays
water polo.
How would you say
the swim season
went?
I think it’s gone pretty
well. Just the positivity
that we had the last few
months and how we had
fun with it.
The team finished
fourth at the
SouthWest Suburban
Conference Meet on
Nov. 2. How would
you say that meet
went for you and the
team?
I think the competition
here helped show
me to what a good time
is in all the events. In the
sectional [this weekend
at Lockport] I will probably
do the 50-freestyle
and all the relays. Everyone
was excited for conference,
It was the last
meet for a lot of people.
We had that energy and it
really helped me a lot in
the pool.
How long have you
been swimming?
I started swimming
when I was six. My
brother, Jack, was swimming
and I followed in
his footsteps. I first swam
for POSA [Palos-Orland
Swim Association].
Do you also play
water polo?
Yes. I swim and play
water polo and I like them
equally. I’ve been swimming
my whole life but I
think water polo is really
fun from the team aspect.
What is it that you
like about aquatic
sports?
I like sports more in the
water because I’m used
to swimming. I also like
swimming with my team
and being with them. So
there’s just a big team aspect.
What have you
learned from Sandburg
girls swimming coach,
Anna McBride?
I learned that hard work
and dedication pay off.
We’ve got to be there for
practice at 5:30 in the
morning and that pays off
in the end.
Do you have your own
vehicle and if so, do
you have a name for
it?
Yes. It’s my mom’s old
2005 mini van. My siblings,
Meghan, Claire,
Jack and myself named it
“Zoomer.” We just decided
to name it that. Now we
zoom around in it.
If you could be a
superhero, who would
you be and why?
Superman. Because I
PHOTO SUBMITTED
want to fly. That’s good
enough for me.
Do you plan to swim
or play water polo in
college?
Yes, but on a club team.
I don’t think I can compete
on the actual college team.
I haven’t started the process
yet but want to go to
the University of Wisconsin
- Madison and major in
engineering.
What’s the best thing
about being an athlete
at Sandburg?
It’s fun because so many
people come out and support
you. There’s a lot
of Sandburg pride at our
school.
Elite-8 season ends against two-time champion
5
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
As the final Marist kill
found its mark near a diving
Shelby Stefanon, the
Sandburg hitting star got
up and was quickly greeted
with a hug from teammate
Rachel Krasowski.
It was over.
This historic season,
with a lot more ups than
downs, came to and end
on Friday, Nov. 8, with a
25-21, 25-22 loss to the
Class 4A two-time defending
state champion
Marist in the Blue Island
Eisenhower Sectional
in front of an estimated
crowd of 1,500.
Two days prior, the
team celebrated its first
sectional title since 2004
with a 25-17, 25-17 victory
over District 230
rival Andrew to claim
the Sandburg Sectional
and tons of photos were
snapped on phones and
a few cameras of players,
coaches and parents
posing with the sectional
championship plaque.
That was a special night
for a special team that finished
the season 34-6.
“It’s a long time coming,
right?” Sandburg
coach David Vales said
minutes after the triumph
that allowed the Eagles to
compete in the Elite Eight.
“It’s a matter of getting
the opportunity and progressing
and moving forward.
You can finally say
you did it.”
Marist (38-2) can make
some history of its own
starting Friday, Nov. 15,
as the Redhawks will attempt
to become the fifth
team to win three straight
Illinois High School Association
state titles. Orland
Park’s Elise Ward,
a 5-foot-11 freshman
middle hitter who was
promoted to the varsity
squad during the season,
is on the RedHawks
roster.
Sandburg played Marist
tough as there were six
ties in the first set and
seven ties and three lead
changes in the second
set before the Redhawks
pulled off the win.
Stefanon had 11 kills,
Krasowski notched 20
digs and Ellie Watson was
a blocking machine with
five.
“It’s been so good,”
Watson said of the season.
“I never thought I would
be playing in a sectional
championship and a supersectional
with a chance
to go down state.”
Krasowski, who is
heading to DePaul next
season, enjoyed the 2019
team.
“It was like family,”
she said. “Whoever goes
in, we know that we have
each other’s back. Everyone
will do their job. It
feels like a weight is lifted
off your shoulders when
you have so much talent
on the team. You can trust
everyone.”
The season was rewarding
but not easy.
“I feel like every season
is hard,” Krasowski
said. “I feel like if you
put in the work, you want
to make it as hard as you
can to make yourself better.
Our season has been
tough with all the competition
that we played. We
were up for the challenge
and we were up for anything
that came our way.”
After winning the sectional
and taking hundreds
of photos, the alltime
Sandburg digs leader
was digging the accomplishment.
“To be a part of something
makes me feel like I am
said. “These girls
worked their butts off. We
worked for each other and
I just love every single
one of them with all my
heart. This was a big team
effort and I’m very proud
of every single one of
them.”
Sophomore Sidona Rao
had 11 kills in the win
over Andrew, which drew
a loud crowd of more than
1,000 fans. Keegan Carey
added seven kills and Stefanon
added six kills and
13 digs. Krasowski had
18 digs and Hailey Farrell
had 16 assists.
Vaughn runs wild for 366 yards in
Providence’s win over Crete-Monee
RANDY WHALEN
Freelance Reporter
Aaron Vaughn literally
ran into some of his old
friends - and past them,
around them and through
them.
The Providence sophomore
running back, who
is from Crete, ran wild to
end the season of the Crete-
Monee football team,
which rostered many of
Vaughn’s Friends.
So does he feel bad about
that?
“A little bit,” he said before
pausing.
“Well, not really,” Vaughn
added. “It’s business.”
Vaughn made sure the
host Celtics took care of
business as he ran 26 times
for 366 yards and scored
four touchdowns. His best
performance helped Providence
pull away from the
Warriors for an unforgettable
61-37 victory in a Class
6A second round playoff
game on Saturday, Nov. 9
in New Lenox.
The 61 points are the
second most in Providence
postseason history. The record
is 68 in a shutout of
now 19-1 in second round
playoff games, including
25 years. They host Glenwood-Chatham
game.
Crete-Monee (10-1),
which was last year’s Class
6A state runner-up was hoping
to make its fourth state
title game appearance in
the past eight seasons. But
Vaughn had other ideas.
“I was nervous,” Vaughn
said. “I came out and felt
like I was going to puke.
These were the guys I grew
5
up with. I knew them and
they knew me. I couldn’t
sleep [Friday] night. I
woke up at six [Saturday
Vaughn scored on runs of
three, 65, 42 and 33 yards.
The final two of those coming
in the last 1:44 of the
game as the Celtics capped
it off by scoring the final 21
points.
The all-senior offensive
Catholic’s volleyball team enjoyed its best season since
2005. JEFF VORVA/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
Providence was playing
its best volleyball of
the year at the right time,
storming through its first
three playoff matches with
ease.
The Celtics won all three
in straight sets, and never
let an opponent reach 20
points.
That included a 25-19,
25-18 stomping of Marian
Catholic in the Class 3A
Joliet Catholic Sectional
semifinal Nov. 4, an especially
impressive result
considering Marian’s history
of success the last decade,
including a 3A state
championship in 2016.
The Spartans also beat
Providence earlier in the
season.
Providence earned its
way into a sectional final
for the first time since
2005. But the Celtics ran
into Joliet Catholic in its
own gym in the championship
match, and the
Angels’ postseason experience
and homecourt advantage
proved too much
to overcome.
Joliet Catholic won its
11th sectional title in the
last 17 years with a 25-
21, 25-20 victory over the
Celtics on Nov. 6.
Providence has still not
won a sectional championship
since 2001.
“I think the crowd really
made a difference,”
lot of mental things for
us. We played our hearts
out, and I’m really proud
No trophy but Eagles have third-best season in CC
JEFF DEGRAW
Freelance Reporter
4
Ben Giblin, of Sandburg, finished 11th overall in the
Class 3A state cross country meet to help his team take
fourth place.
When you run your best
on the biggest stage it’s
all supposed to work out
in the end, but on Saturday,
Nov. 9, on the famed
Detweiller Park course in
Peoria, the 3A state boys
cross country race was
historic and a little disappointing
for Sandburg.
The Eagles fell three
points short of the thirdplace
state trophy, as they
scored 156 points, with
third place York at 153.
St. Charles East was the
winner at 64 followed
by Wheaton-Warrenville
South with 68.
The last time the Eagles
won a state trophy
was in 2015 when they
won the state title. This
is the third-best finish
in program history and
the sixth time in seven
years they finished in the
top 10.
“We were close and
we had guys run personal
bests today,” Sandburg
coach John O’Malley
said. “It’s hard to get all
seven to run their best
on the same day, that’s
our sport, but I feel good
about the outcome. Sure,
everyone will look for that
one second here or there,
or that one place, but it
was madness out there
today.”
That madness O’Malley
was talking about was the
breakneck pace that the
race started with on a picture-perfect
day for racing,
and what happened
when it was all over.
The record of 13 minutes,
50.2 seconds that
Craig Virgin set in 1972
over the three-mile course
was broken by Hersey senior
John Methner, who
won his second individual
title with a 13:49.86.
“Over the years we
have been chipping away
at that record, but it’s hard
to do because everything
needs to be perfect, from
the weather, the competition,
your training,”
O’Malley said. “I know
we have had some great
runners and it was a tough
record, it became sort of
mystical. I would have
loved to be out there today
racing, you couldn’t have
asked for a better weather
day. Everyone has heard
about that record, but now
so many have seen this
one and I really think this
is good for the sport.
“It was special to witness
that and everyone in
the race can say they were
there, they ran in that race.
The atmosphere was great
and I can tell you that this
race, on this course is the
best tradition that the state
has in any sport, hands
down.”
Sandburg had two All-
State performances by
virtue of a top 25 finish as
Will Giblin placed ninth in
14:34.64 and Ben Giblin
finished 11th in 14:34.88.
There were four runners,
between eighth and 11th
who ran 14:34 and were
separated by the photo at
the finish.
“That race went really
fast at the start,” Ben
Giblin said. “But, we
went after it and then that
last 400 meters coming
up the hill was just crazy.
There were so many of us
coming up there together.
I don’t know if I’ve ever
been part of such a crazy
finish. I knew coming
up to the finish that if I
NOW THAT’S CLOSE
Four runners, two from Sandburg, crossed the finish line at almost the same
time at the Class 3A state cross country meet. Here is how they finished:
PLACE NAME SCHOOL TIME
8th William Hauenstein Wheaton-Warrenville South 14:34.23
9th Will Giblin Sandburg 14:34.64
10th Daniel Klysh York 14:34.74
11th Ben Giblin Sandburg 14:34.88
hit a certain time I could
get my name on the alltime
list for our school.
It’s important to know
the history of your sport
and we have such a great
tradition at Sandburg,
you know some of those
things.
“When you finish, and
you know you have done
your best there is nothing
else you can do and today
it was just a few points
short of a trophy.”
Sam Rodriguez placed
28th for the Eagles in
14:56 and was followed
by Ismail Tineh in 58th
(15:09) and TJ Cosler in
92nd (15:22) to round
out the top five scorers.
Griffin Lehnhardt placed
167th and Ahmed Alhayek
was 181st.
Orland Park’s Thomas
Leonard ran as an individual
for Marist and placed
49th in 15:03.
On the girls side for
Sandburg, junior Brielle
Morris placed 170th
and Paige Killen finished
201st.
“This was the first time
to be here and it was exciting,”
Morris said. “I
can tell you the one thing
we both learned was not
to go out so fast. But it
was fun, we learned a lot
today and hopefully will
be back next year.”
“With this experience,
now we have to carry this
over to track and get to
that state meet,” Killen
said.

SOME COOL THINGS
ABOUT THE FALL
SPORTS SEASON
1. Volleyball Victories
Coach David Vales’
Sandburg’s volleyball
team (above)
won its first sectional
title since 2004.
2. CC back in the top
10
In five of the
previous six years,
Sandburg’s boys
cross country team
finished in the top
10 in the state in
Class 3A. After last
season’s 16th-place
finish, the Eagles
were back with a
fourth-place finish
this year.
3. Speaking of top
10…
Sandburg’s girls
tennis team tied for
10th place in the
IHSA meet, which
was its best finish
ever. The doubles
team of Julia Canellis-Jayme
Gross was
named all-state for
its top 16 finish.
THURSDAY MORNING QUARTERBACK
Sandburg/Andrew
volleyball atmosphere
was really ‘rockin’
Jeff Vorva
Sports Editor
I
dedicate this column
to a guy named Grant
Boxleitner.
Grant is a big-shot news
anchor at Suncoast News
Network in Florida.
But a few decades ago,
he was a freelance sports
reporter for a paper I
worked at in McHenry
County. He was a really
enthusiastic young man
back in the day. Maybe
over-enthusiastic at times.
But that was still cool.
Once, we sent him to a
Thursday night Northern
Illinois University football
game as the Huskies
hosted an opponent people
heard of: Kansas State.
About 15 or 20 minutes
before kickoff, he called
the paper. I answered the
phone.
“THIS PLACE IS
ROCKIN’!!!” he bellowed.
Forgive me for the
capital letters and extra
exclamation points, but
since he punctured a part
of my left eardrum that
night, I feel entitled.
Anyway, “This place is
rockin!” became an inside
catchphrase in the office.
So, fast-forward to Nov.
6. Andrew and Sandburg’s
girls volleyball team were
set to square off in Orland
Park for a Class 4A sectional
championship.
There was so much
noise, I turned to Sandburg
assistant principal
Greg Gardner and
couldn’t resist saying
my best Grant Boxleitner
voice “This place is
rockin’!”
He said something like
“Yes, it is.”
Oh, and we were still
minutes away from first
serve.
Sandburg won the
match 25-17, 25-17 to win
its first sectional title since
2004 but maybe because
of all the racket, it felt
much closer.
Between the 992 paid
patrons and a host of those
who were on a pass list,
more than 1,000 people
were in the gym.
Every one of the 84
points during the 48-minute
pressure-cooker environment
received thunderous
reactions, mostly from
leather-lunged students
from both sides.
Sandburg students helped make it an electric atmosphere in the volleyball sectional
title game on Nov. 6. JEFF VORVA/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
A couple of stretches
in the match, I had to go
in the coaches’ office to
take care of some things
and even with the door
closed, it was easy to tell
who scored points by the
bellowing.
I’ve been to Marist/
Mother McAuley matches
in the past during playoffs
and even during the
regular season in recent
years and this Sandburg/
Andrew match compared
with those barn-burners.
The beauty of a match
like this is that this
atmosphere will be hard
to duplicate. The state
tournament, held in huge
Redbird Arena in Normal,
cannot come close to what
happened in Orland Park
on this night.
“I love it – it’s a District
230 rivalry and everyone
came out to watch us
play,” Andrew coach Emily
Connolly said. “This
was the first time my girls
were playing in anything
big like this. You try to
prepare for it as much as
you can. It was awesome.
The amount of fans that
we had was as many as
I’ve ever seen in five
years coaching.”
Sandburg Athletic
Director Tom Freyer
Tweeted to the world
it was the best sporting
event in his four years at
the school.
Sandburg coach David
Vales was also impressed.
“There was a buzz all
day in school,” Vales said.
“Sometimes Sandburg is
too big to get that kind of
atmosphere. But this was
great. I’m sure Andrew
was hoppin’ in school
all day. They have been
hoppin’ (since winning the
regional title on Oct. 31.).”
“We had a little feel
for this in the hallway.
We appreciate everyone
who came out to make it
special for the girls.”
These two teams met on
Sept, 26 in the Eagle gym
with Sandburg taking a
25-11, 25-16 victory.
The atmosphere was not
quite the same.
“No, no, no, no,” Vales
said. “A lot of times, you
get in the middle of the
season and a lot of other
sports are practicing or
playing. The football
team, soccer team, tennis
team, the cross country
teams, the swimming team
– they are all in-season.
Once things start to wind
down they come out and
support us. All of our athletes
support each other.”
In the four-figure attendance
total were some
familiar folks.
“I like to see a lot of
alumni faces,” Vales said.
“I like seeing the faces of
a lot of parents of daughters
who have played
with us the last 20 years.
That’s special. It was nice
to be able to get them that
sectional plaque.”
It was a rockin’ accomplishment.
LISTEN UP
“We worked for each other and I just love every
single one of them with all my heart.”
