Annual
Report

Friends, I have been so grateful for your support and partnership
since we first dreamed up Able Works almost 14 years ago now. It
is your passion and commitment to our common mission to serve
youth and young mothers that have kept that dream alive. Together,
we’ve celebrated successes and milestones, transformation and
flourishing.
This year was truly a watershed year for Able Works. Last October,
we began work on our 5 Year Strategic Plan and I am proud to
say that we not only met our goals for the year but in many cases,
exceeded our expectations.
LiveAble continued to grow this year, serving more women and
children in East Palo Alto, North Fair Oaks, and other high need
communities by leveraging strong partnerships with a school
district and community partners.
FutureProfits also experienced significant program growth. This
fall, we introduced AchieveAble, an initiative for youth navigating
the transition out of high school and into college or career. This
program brings elements of LiveAble cohorts to FutureProfits
students with the aim of providing a strong foundation for youth on
their paths to success.
OUR MISSION
To equip individuals with financial education, life skills, and
assets that enable one to live free from oppression and poverty
OUR VISION
Finally, Able formally launched a second service area in the Central
Valley, where we are serving all 700 high school seniors within
the Ceres Unified School District. This is an incredible opportunity
to impact a community by equipping youth to get and stay on an
upward trajectory of success.
Thank you. I am humbled daily by the support of our volunteers
and donors and I am honored to serve alongside an extremely
dedicated Board of Directors and staff team.
Grace and Peace,
To live in a society where every individual has the ability to
fulfill their greatest human potential
John
P.S. If you’d like to learn more about our growth initiatives, please
LIVEABLE
IMPACT OF LIVEABLE
“I have been
taught to see life
in another way,
now I have
purpose. Before, I
lived day by day.”
“ Yolanda had a very strong, long term vision of
success and was determined to make it a reality
Food and cooking are Yolanda’s* favorite way to
express love. During difficult times, Yolanda finds
comfort in her kitchen and feeding her family,
especially her two daughters. Among family and
friends, Yolanda is known for her Salvadoran pupusas.
Today, she is turning her love of cooking into a path
towards success.
Four years ago, Yolanda and her family became the
targets of gang violence because of her job as a
police officer. In order to protect her young daughters,
Yolanda came to the US, where she eventually
won her asylum case. During her time in LiveAble,
Yolanda worked closely with Blanca Medina, LiveAble
Program Manager, to craft a plan to bring stability and
economic advancement to her family. She quickly
identified that she wanted to pursue her passion
for cooking and learn how to turn it into a profitable
business.
”
With Blanca’s guidance and encouragement, Yolanda
completed a culinary arts program in September,
earning top marks despite being an English language
learner. Additionally, Yolanda was able to find free
childcare for her daughters. She is in the process
of applying for affordable housing, continuing her
ELL studies and looking for a job as a chef. Blanca
says, “Yolanda had a very strong, long term vision of
success, and was determined to make it a reality.”
Your partnership with Able Works creates bridges for
young mothers like Yolanda to leverage their inherent
skills and assets to chart a path towards success.
FUTUREPROFITS
IMPACT OF FUTUREPROFITS
“Since taking the
class, I am now
very conscious
about my
decisions and
how they affect
my future.”
“ At the beginning, I thought a little about saving.
But when learning about all the goals I need to
set, I realized I need money to do them.
Since 2007, Able Works has equipped underresourced
students with the knowledge and skills
needed to launch themselves on a trajectory of
success. One FutureProfits student said, “At the
beginning, I thought a little about saving. But when
learning about all the goals I need to set, I realized I
need money to do them.”
Karina, a FutureProfits student, recently graduated
from Menlo-Atherton High School and is facing the
tumultuous transition to college and career. Artistic
and deeply passionate about child development,
Karina knew that she needed guidance translating
her interests into marketable skills and a career,
specifically as a midwife or doula. As a firstgeneration
college student and a child of immigrants,
Karina is determined to succeed.
year at the College of San Mateo. Karina receives 1:1
coaching, goal setting, career and education advising,
within the context of a positive, supportive peer group.
Umeeka Sheena, AchieveAble Program Manager,
says, “Karina is pulled in so many directions - working,
classes, helping her parents or translating for family.
In the middle of all this, AchieveAble is a space for
Karina to focus on herself and her goals.” Karina’s
passion and determination to succeed are leveraged
and bolstered by the support and community of
AchieveAble, launching Karina on a path towards
success.
Your investment in students like Karina creates lasting
transformation in their lives and in communities
across Northern California.
