brings an educational angle

to Islamorada Visitors

Capt. Matt Hungerford, of Clearly Unique

Charters, is taking an eco-friendly, and like his

business says, a unique approach to charters

in the Florida Keys. Clearly Unique offers a

variety of charters, from scheduled to private

tours, ranging in size from 2-40 people. And

the education that he shares along the way

about the history, and wildlife, is what elevates

these trips to another level.

“We have spots good for just about everything.

Manatees, birds, various types of fish.

Being just at the backdoor of the Everglades,

it affords us the opportunity to see things you

wouldn’t in waters further south,” says Matt

of the places he takes clients. He views each

trip as an opportunity to educate tourists and

locals alike about the environment of the

Keys, and the ways to protect it.

With threats such as Sargassum grasses

and red tides, there’s much to learn and

teach visitors. Matt stays active in the community

with different organizations to stay

abreast on environmental topics, on both the

state and federal level. He also spends time

around other local tour guides and fisherman,

and shares his voice as well as his customers.

“Everybody’s voice matters, and the more

we educate the more we can get information

out there. If we don’t educate people from

the ground up, we will never reach the politicians

and the people that will make a difference.

And we are starting to make a dent with

social and main media, but the more tourists

that know about protecting the environment,

and learning an appreciation for it, the more

they are going to spread the word.”

Matt makes it a point to make every trip

he takes to have an eco-friendly angle. “We

do everything we can to extend the life of our

local ecosystem. We take small steps ourselves…

from getting away from plastic bottles,

to trying to remove any debris or litter

we see during our shore side trips. We also

provide and encourage our customers to use

reef safe sunblock, and not only explain why

it’s important, but then we show

them what we are protecting.”

Matt takes clients out on clear

kayaks, and often times wildlife

such as manatees will come

up and investigate the boaters,

with the translucent boats giving

them a great vantage point

for all matter of creatures. “We

also have clients that are just

crazy about turtles, more so

than even dolphins. We have a

spot we can take them to that

isn’t as well known, but that

tends to have at least half a dozen

turtles on it, and our customers

can’t get enough photos.”

Besides showing customers

the wonders of our reefs and

wildlife, Matt also takes clients

to several of the protected islands

in the area, giving the history

of local Keys, such as Indian

Key, and enjoys sharing the history

of Islamorada with groups. “People have

a good time learning a little bit about how

the wreckers in the area started, and the

immigration of people from Cuba and the

Bahamas. We can also touch on Flagler railroad,

with Islamorada being along the same

route… there’s a lot of history here.”

If you’re looking for a charter that will not

only entertain, but educate, Clearly Unique

Charters can fit the bill. “We are very transparent,

and if you have questions or requests,

we will do our best to answer them up front,”

says Matt. His vessels are equipped to take

larger groups out to snorkel or relax on the

sandbar too, and it’s perfect for those parties,

weddings, or bachelorette groups that want

to do a different kind of activity while visiting

Islamorada. “We want people to feel like a

friend of ours during their trip, and we want

people to come back to Islamorada and the

Upper Keys, and appreciate the environment

as well. We’re not just a road to get them to

Key West.”

The 10th Annual Conch Scramble Charity Golf Tournament

The 10th annual Conch Scramble

Charity Golf Tournament took place

Sept 28th of this year and brought 55

teams onto the water, decked out from

head to toe. Becoming a staple every

year in the Keys community, Conch

Scramble isn’t just a party on the

water, but a way for the community to

give back, and support local charities.

So, what is Conch Scramble, exactly?

Billed as the largest Par-TEE on the

water, teams gather on boats, dressed

to compete and head from hole to

hole, 9 in total, hitting biodegradable

golf balls into the water. There is a

popular kick-off party on Friday night

with games, auction, food and drink,

and an awards party at the end of the

event.

Each year beneficiaries are chosen

based on the needs in the community,

and together with the Conch Scramble

board, they raise money for the

charities.

Stephanie Townsend, a member

of the Conch Scramble board for

five years, explains the process of

selecting beneficiaries. “We look for

beneficiaries with a real need. We

tend to focus on schools and student

organizations… their funding has

decreased so much.” The board also

looks at the ability of the organization

to assist in running the event. “The

board is the backbone, but when

you become a beneficiary, you are

responsible for gathering volunteers,

sponsors, auction items, and more.

It makes the beneficiaries value their

fundraising a bit more. You really

have to have the man power and

volunteers, and work for it.”

Michelle Pope, President of the

Conch Scramble, agrees. “We provide

the party, and the means to have the

party, but it’s up to the beneficiaries

to pick up the pieces and make it

happen. They are the ones, with our

guidance, that put on the event. The

more auction items they get, and

sponsors, the more money they bring

in. It’s six weeks of work they have to

do, but they get a nice check at the

end, and it’s totally worth it.”

This year’s beneficiaries were Key

Largo PTA, Coral Shores High School

Culinary Program, and Islamorada

Firefighters Explorers Program, and

together they brought in a record

number of sponsors. The event began

Tim & Jackie Hampson with 25 of their closest friends & family won the award for Best Spirit with

their team costume of “Give Bees a Chance.”

party. The house is always donated by

a generous person in our community.

Open to the public, including those

not participating in the golfing, it’s one

of the events locals can get involved

in, even if they may not have a knack

for swinging a club. “It’s one of the

largest parties of the year. We had 400

people this year,” Michelle says.

Then, the following day, teams take

to the water, in decked out boats

and dressed in a variety of themes.

“Costumes were better this year

than last year. People went all out,

even decorating their boats,” says

Stephanie of the bright and colorful

costumes hitting the docks.

Boats travel to nine holes overall,

spanning across several well-known

Keys landmarks like Angler House

Marina, The OV, Islamorada Fish Co.,

Lorelei, and Jim Mooney’s house,

located on the beautiful Bayside of

the island. “Those locations have all

been with us for at least 4 years, but

this year we also added Postcard Inn

and Pelican Cove. The restaurants

and hotels that provide their docks

are a huge help. They allow 300 plus

people to come to their property in

one day, along with staffing of around

7-10 volunteers. We really appreciate

them,” says Michelle of the locations.

The event itself is running for the

first year as a self-sustainable event.

Dean and Julie Eakin have always enjoyed

being on the water. Dean lived in West Palm

Beach until 1999, and was an avid fisherman,

regularly taking trips to the Bahamas. His wife

Julie was born in Pensacola, and moved to the

Keys when she was 6. Her parents were school

teachers, and they spent their summers also

traveling to the Bahamas. “I really developed a

love for the water as a small child. My dad was

a dive boat captain, before he was a school

teacher, in Ocean Reef when we first moved

here, and I often went snorkeling with him as

a little girl,” says Julie of growing up in the Keys.

It wasn’t until 2016 when the couple decided

to take a vacation on the water, on a cruise. “At

the time, I had never been on a cruise. But we

were about to plan a vacation with another

couple. They had been to Europe a few times

already, and they were planning a land vacation.

We obviously wanted to see as much of

the country as possible with the time we had.

My fear of 12 days of frequently moving around

on land was being the pack mule and living out

of a suitcase. Our friends had never been on a

cruise either so we all decided to give it a try. It

was the best decision we ever made,” says Dean

of the trip that changed their lives.

“Cruising is so relaxing for us. Our cabin

is our peaceful place. We unpack and stow

away our luggage. All of our clothes and

amenities are right there, just like you’re

at home. Plus, you have a balcony with an

ocean view,” Dean says. “Overall, it gives you

more time to enjoy the locations. They move

the boat at night from port to port, so you

get a good night’s rest, and wake up in a new

location every few days.”

Julie agrees, and adds, “The food is amazing

and all inclusive. The service is so attentive.

Everywhere you go the staff is making sure

you have everything you need; your favorite

drink, a snack or a towel for your lounge chair.

It’s convenient and relaxing, and inexpensive

compared to most land vacations.”

“It’s actually 30-50% less than if you were to

have the same vacation on land,” adds Dean.

“It’s definitely more affordable. There is outstanding

entertainment, Broadway plays,

comedy clubs and casinos, but also quite

places to relax and read a book.”

“They even have classes that teach

you how to use your iPad! We especially

love the ballroom classes and the karaoke

bars,” says Julie.

Cruising is the fastest growing segment

of the 8 trillion-dollar travel industry.

In 2000, 7 million people went on a

cruise, this year 30 million people are

expected to go on a cruise. Sir Richard

Branson of the Virgin Empire is building

4 ships right now at a cost of over 4 billion

dollars.

Almost four years ago, the couple

was invited to join a cruise club by one

of its founding partners. “The concept

was simple, members contribute $100

per month and the club matches it. It’s

like a 401K for your cruise vacations.

There are over 5,500 different cruises

to choose from, and the discounts alone

make the membership worth it. There

are so many ways to save by being a

member,” says Dean. The club is the

world’s first and only travel membership

club focused solely on the cruise industry, and

it still invitation only. There were 30 people at

that inaugural meeting 4 years ago and today

the club has over 180,000 members in 178

countries cruising for less, cruising for free and

some are getting paid to cruise.

Dean and Julie are holding an informational

party at their residence on November

7th, at 6:30 pm for those wanting to find out

more. There is limited seating, and space

must be reserved in advance, but it’s a must

for those looking for more freedom on vacation,

especially those with a love of the water.

“The beauty with cruises is that you can either

choose to connect or disconnect. There

are so many types, from ships with just a few

hundred people on board, to those filled with

thousands. There are kid-friendly adventures,

adult only and alternative cruises, something

for everyone.”

The 10th Annual

Light Up Key Largo

is returning this

year, kicking off the

holiday Season!

Every year on the

first Saturday of December, the Murray

Nelson Center is transformed into a

winter wonderland for the community,

presented by The Key Largo Community

Preservation Foundation with assistance

from Monroe County and The Friends of

the Key Largo Cultural Center.

There will be activities galore for the

family, and especially kids, during the

event, including one of the highlights

and a rarity for the Keys. “The ice

skating rink will be back this year,

sponsored by Upper Keys Marine

Construction,” says Dawn DeBrule,

one of the organizers.

After hitting the ice, kids and adults alike

can browse the vendors, both for profit

and non-for-profit. Kids can take part in

activities such as icing cookies in Santa’s

workshop, or decorating their own

seasonal crafts, free of charge thanks to

Bay Harbor Resort. Parents can finish,

or start, their Christmas shopping with

local vendors lining the booths as well.

No need to pull out cash in advance

for this event either, as First State Bank

will have ATMs onsite for shopper’s

convenience.

The event also offers a special Secret

Santa store for children to shop for their

family members. “We have it set up

where there are elves on hand to assist

the children, and parents can drop kids

off at the door, allowing them to pick

out their own gifts for mom, dad, and

siblings. Each item can be purchased for

only $3, and will also be gift wrapped. We

keep it at a low price so kids can afford

it,” says Dawn of the Secret Santa store.

After shopping, head to the food vendors

for a quick bite. A hotdog and bottle of

water are free for kids, and adults can

enjoy a hamburger or hotdog for only

three or two dollars, respectively. There

will also be corn on cob, and for those

looking for another culinary selection,

additional local food vendors will also be

on site.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Christmas

without Mr. and Mrs. Claus, and they

will again be present this year for

photos, thanks to IOA Insurance Office

of America. Parents will be able to

download the photos from online after

the event.

The biggest change this year from last

year is the parking. “It’s a big change,” says

Dawn. “Last year people were parking

miles up and down US 1. This year, we

have a solution.” Visitors can park at

Rowells Marina, located at MM 106, and

take a trolley to the event, sponsored by

Hershoff Lupino & Yagel, LLP and Mayor

Sylvia Murphy. “There will be two trolleys

running continuously throughout the

event,” explained Dawn. Because of the

limited parking at the Murray Nelson

Center, only handicapped parking will

be available onsite.

This year’s event is taking place on

December 7th, and the entire community

is encouraged to come out and enjoy ice

skating, Santa, and the lighting of the 40-

foot tree, kicking off the holiday season!

“For the first several years we had

help from the Tourist Development

Council. We’ve been under their

umbrella for the past nine years, but

this year and moving forward, we are

not anymore, and we are very proud

of that,” says Michelle.

The event now brings in its own crowd

every year, 90% composed of locals.

The board itself is run by people that

not only want to give back to the

community, but have played the event

themselves.

“I am a member of the Plantation

Key School PTA, and they were a

beneficiary six years ago. I was

so overwhelmed, and completely

astonished at the money that was

raised and the outpouring of support

in the community. I felt like it was

something I wanted to be a part of, and

when a treasurer spot on the board

opened up, I wanted to come aboard,”

says Stephanie of her involvement.

Michelle has a similar story. “Conch

Scramble is my way of giving back to

the community. I’ve been here for 20

years, and my background is event

planning. I’m involved with these

causes because I was able to raise my

son here, and this community runs on

When the teams came in to the

awards party at the end of the day,

there was no shortage of creativity.

The Flintstones mingled with Aliens,

and a dodgeball team had friendly

banter with the Globetrotters. Tim

& Jackie Hampson with 25 of their

closest friends & family won the

award for Best Spirit with their team

costume of “Give Bees a Chance.” The

top score was awarded to Atlantic Bay

Construction, with team members

John & Trish Osteen, Steve Ferrera,

Keith Durham, Pete Raskob. Both of

these teams have participated for

over five years.

At the end of the day, the beneficiaries

are getting a wonderful contribution

to their organizations. “We are giving

away $40,000 this year,” says Michelle

of this year’s Conch Scramble. “We

really love our unique event. It’s not

just your average tournament. You

travel by boat. You golf on the water.

And although we are raising money

for the community, it’s a day for the

adults to have fun. And people look

forward to it every year.”

the “First Thanksgiving” was celebrated by the

Pilgrims after their first successful harvest in

the New World in October 1621. This feast lasted

three days, and – as recounted by attendee

Edward Winslow – it was attended by 90 Native

Americans known as the Wampanoag and 53

Pilgrims, according to Wikipedia.

The English colonists we call pilgrims celebrated

days of thanksgiving as part of their

religion, says Scholastic.com. But these were

days of prayer, not days of feasting.

Today, we incorporate all those facets. As a

great American tradition, families and friends

continue to gather, give thanks and celebrate

with food and drink on Thanksgiving. The earliest

Keys families would cook a chicken, like at

Christmas, according to Paul Everette Albury Jr.

of Tavernier. Today we might find members of

that same family gathering at a neighborhood

church, where volunteers whip the mashed

potatoes and carve many turkeys to feed the

parishioners and guests that avail themselves

of the generosity of that church and its members.

Area churches create bountiful feasts and

share with whomever would like to enjoy a

traditional Thanksgiving dinner. At San Pedro

Catholic Church at mile marker 89.5 bayside,

it’s the Men’s Club that does the preparing,

basting and cooking in the church kitchen in

the wee hours. The Women’s Club and volunteers

are asked to make and contribute desserts.

According to parishioner Ron Haugin, the

first Thanksgiving dinner offered at San Pedro

was in the early 1980s, and it was a steak dinner

served outside on the church’s vast lawn

on tables with folding chairs. “The thought was

people would not want turkey,” said current

Men’s Club President Rick Richter, “but over

time, we have figured out many people like the

full trimmings dinner, particularly folks that

may not otherwise have a large spread.”

For the nominal cost of $10 per plate with

children free, San Pedro’s community feast is

set for Sunday, Nov. 24, from 4-7 p.m.

San Pedro, like other denominations, also

creates Thanksgiving food baskets. The San

Pedro Women’s Club collects monetary donations

for the needy. Grocery gift cards will be

included and are designated for perishable

and pantry foods.

In central Islamorada, Island Christian

Church’s biggest tradition is its Thanksgiving

Outreach that takes place the Tuesday before

Thanksgiving, according to Christine Grave,

pastoral assistant. “We provide boxed Thanksgiving

dinners to anyone that needs one in the

Upper Keys through Marathon. Businesses

provide the donations and food, and volunteers

come and help cook, pack and deliver the

meals [set for] Nov. 26 this year.” Anyone who

needs a meal or would like to help volunteer

with the outreach can contact the church office

The churches that offer food banks and

weekly dinners, such as the First Baptist

Church of Islamorada and Burton Memorial

San Pedro volunteer is impressed with the turkeys.

United Methodist Church in Tavernier, also offer

smashing Thanksgiving dinners open to the

public.

Many helping hands make light work. In the

past, Tracy Timura of Islamorada volunteered

to serve at Burton’s Thanksgiving dinner for

the community when her husband was away

over the holiday.

Giving is what the Keys community does so

well. Getting involved in the spirit of the holidays

is easy. Even easier is enjoying and supporting

churches’ efforts to ensure families of

all economic means have a happy holiday.

From Indians showing pilgrims how to grow

corn in mounds – which included putting herring

in the ground to make the corn grow better

– to the current sharing and caring most

evident at our area churches, nobody has to

eat a TV dinner on Thanksgiving in the Keys.

Community outreach is around every corner.
