The Retro Logistician

Hi, my name is Christine Santarin.

Here’s a little teaser of my portfolio,

and it’s based on my personality and

what I’ve done so far

during my Foundation year in Design.

I love colours and arranging them in

codes. Kinda old-fashioned, right?

But I like to call it being organised

in style, but going beyond the colour

spectrum is where I find

the fresh designs are! Supposedly.

W hy ‘T he L ogistician’s R etro C odes’

Codes: A system of words, symbols or

figures to represent information.

I like using colour coding as a way to organise

things like text, categories, and images. For me, it’s

more practical to see labels with different colours,

especially if somethings are similar but not

completely different. Therefore, sometimes I can be

picky when it comes to relating one colour to another.

I’m old-school; I like designing things inspired from

the past. For me, it feels like the fun doesn’t stop

when Vinyl Records still go round and round.

As a ‘Logistician’ person, I like being practical and

won’t dilly dally over a situation for long. Relying

mostly on facts besides creativity is my way to go.

Firm with my decisions, I was actually serious on

adding the cat at the side here. ;)

With my reflection on my trophy,

I sketched out roughly of what the

final outcome would be; a VERY

distorted version of myself. Then, I

began sculpting the foundation of my

sculpture with wires and modelling

clay; making the actual form of my

trophy. I added my exaggerated facial

features, some fake eyelashes for

realism, and a dash charcoal powder

for contouring.

Caution: Scary self Portrait

One of my funny assignments was

to create a self portrait of

myself in clay. Except this time,

I had to use a different, and

shiny refelctive object as my

mirror of the day. The victim,

my Trophy, besides me.

H appy B irthday!

I started off by thinking of the profile

of the card; something interactive,

innovative, fun, simple, and modern.

I then remembered the chatterbox or

fortune teller game using a square sheet

of paper. It’s easy, and can be designed

with a modern twist! A perfect idea, so I

got into designing the illustrations, the

text and placement for colleagues

to write a note.

My first project for a

company client! The task was

to make an interesting

birthday card with a modern

twist of any theme using

photo manipulation via

Photoshop and Illustrator.

I decided to make my

birthday based on ‘playful’.

Y oll’s T otem

This personal project was

just a small practice for me

to try out wood carving.

Since I was new to the

medium, I went for a very

simple design; a vector owl.

I don’t have any initial

sketches of this piece,

simply because I didn’t want

a ‘polished’ result. I just

wanted to learn and get a

feel of wood carving.

Using Scandinavian Wooden

Toys as reference, I began

carving the very basic form

and obvious features of an

owl. It ended up looking

like a totem which was way

better than I thought and

named it ‘Yoll the Owl’.

A collaboration with my

orgi’s Sunshine Scale

classmates; Mei Qing, Yee Man,

and Calista. We were tasked to

make art from canvases and

yarn as the main ingredients

with the theme, ‘Reasons to be

Cheerful’. It was a challenge

as we wanted the piece to be

somewhat interactive.

There were many sketches, from a sign post in London, a

kaleidoscope, a box, to a weather detector. We eventually settled

with a weather detector combined with a scale or meter.

We also used dogs in particular as our mascot for the scale with

the metaphor ‘walking on sunshine’. We combined the canvases with

a bamboo stick so they could hang from the ceiling. With a notepad

and pen attached, people can write how they feel now and relate to

the levels of cheerfulness, like a public diary.

P opper the A mphivena

Caution: Scary Cat Face

I would say this project can be

under my ‘fails’ but it was a

good try. The task of this projct

was to make a pinata based on

mythical creatures, and funnily,

our personality. I choose to base

my pinata off an ‘Amphivena’, a

two headed monster that confuses

people and preys.

I referred to this creature was because it was

similar to my personality; quiet yet deceiving as a

child (used to pull funny pranks on people that were

mean to me). I have also added a cat as the ‘heads’

of my pinata because I used to be ‘playful as a

kitten’ when I was a child. After many sketches,

I’ve constructed the pinata. Not the most accurate

thing I made to a sketch, but it was a funny try.

I took ‘spark’ to literal sense and based

on chemistry(love) when substances are

mixed together.

With my salt and watercolor mark making

techinques, I tested out colors and

textures, seeing what kind of emotions they

emit. After that, I made the storyboard and

started animating.

I would say this is one the

pieces I like the most; my

first try at animation! In

this assignment, I had to make

a 30 second flipbook

animation. It has the same

theme as the Corgi’s Sunshine

Scale - Reaons to be Cheerful!

The reason and metaphor for

this one is, ‘To Spark Love’.
