O’GaraYears ago, the Millis PoliceDepartment would do a community-widecollection of Toysfor Tots for the U.S. MarineCorps. Meanwhile, Det. DaleBickford, Millis school resourceofficer, would do a separate toydrive for needy families withwhom he interacted throughthe schools. Four years ago,then, it made sense to switchapproaches and make Bickford’slocal toy drive a townwideeffort.Although Toys for Tots wasa worthy cause, says Det. Bickford,“We decided to open it upto the whole community, whoknew gifts were given back tothe community itself.”If you would like to donatea new, unwrapped gift, pleasebring it by either the Millis PoliceDept., 1003 Main Street,or the Millis Fire Dept., 885Main Street, by December18 th .“We have to wrap all thegifts,” says Det. Bickford, whoadds that members of the policeand fire unions put in thateffort themselves, as well asmake runs on their personaltime to purchase wish-list giftsthat might not have been donated.Bickford says a handfulof community members helpwith the wrapping night (thisyear likely at the firehouse),which usually includes hotcocoa and pizza, but spaceto accommodate wrappers islimited, so participation is firstcome,first-serve.Det. Bickford, who gets a listthrough school counselors, saysthe drive is open to all requests.“We don’t deny anybody.Someone could live in a bighouse, but that doesn’t meanthey have money. The biggestthing about this is confidentiality,”he says. He gets addresses,names of children and theirages, and he gives parents theoption to have members of thePolice or Fire Association deliverthe gifts or to pick them up.When asked if there is a particularage group that doesn’treceive donations, Bickfordresponds that teens could usedonations, particularly of giftcards. The father of four pointsout that while younger kids likemany presents to open, olderchildren generally have oneparticular item they’d reallylike to have.“It’s the best feeling in theworld for young kids to getsomething on Christmas day,”says Det.
