The Council’s mandate is to assist and 

support 30 member organizations in the 

delivery of services that promote the 

employment and inclusion of over 1800 

individuals with disabilities living in 

communities across Nova Scotia.

The Directions Council and its members are excited to 

introduce their first Holiday Catalogue featuring Nova Scotia 

products and services from over 15 member social 

enterprises. 

The catalogue is divided by region. Within each region you 

will find member information pages highlighting products and 

services produced by our terrific teams. 

For our socially conscious community members, your gift

Region one members continue to be a strong force in the 

network, collectively operating over ten social enterprises on 

the Island including four thrift stores, three wood shops, three 

cafe and catering operations and a print shop. 

All social enterprises create positive spaces for individuals 

with intellectual disabilities, mental health challenges and 

other barriers to employment to connect, build employment 

skills and gain access to income generating opportunities. 

Profits generated from social enterprises are reinvested by 

each agency to strengthen local programming, training and 

employment opportunities.

CAPE (Centre for Adults in Progressive 

Employment) formerly known as Brass 

Tack Industries has been operating as a 

social enterprise in Glace Bay since 1985. 

We perform assembly services, refinish 

furniture, make wood products, do grounds 

maintenance and we are proud to be a part 

of the Nova Scotia Services for Seniors.

Building Futures Employment Society is a 

community based nonprofit organization 

that has been serving the Lower Sackville, 

Bedford, Fall River, and surrounding areas 

for over 40 years. We operate four social 

enterprises (Futures Café, Futures 

Impressions, Futures Birds, and Assembly 

Plus) and provide employment, support, and 

job development services to adults with 

intellectual disabilities.

Collaborative Partnerships 

PROVINCIAL & INTERPROVINCIAL MEMBERS 

in 2016, Directions Council members began to explore social 

enterprise models that would benefit from the pooled resources 

of multiple agency partners and at the same time create more 

employment and skill building opportunities for individuals living 

with intellectual disabilities, mental health challenges and other 

barriers to employment. 

As a result, the Ability Wood 

Products Co-operative Ltd. 

was established in 2017 and 

currently represents the 

collective interests of 8 

member organizations. 

Building on this model, 11 

agencies joined forces in 2018 

to launch Home Services 

Nova Scotia.
