Lemont’s SS. Cyril and
Methodius School named
one of the best in the nation
U.S. Secretary of Education
Betsy DeVos announced
on Sept. 26 that
SS. Cyril and Methodius
School (SSCM) has been
named a 2019 National
Blue Ribbon School.
SSCM is among 312
public and 50 non-public
schools nationwide receiving
this honor. This marks
the first and only time a
Lemont elementary school
has received this recognition.
“The entire SS. Cyril and
Methodius School family
is honored to have been
named a 2019 National
Blue Ribbon School,”
said Shirley A. Tkachuk,
principal of SS. Cyril and
Methodius School. “This
reaffirms the dedication,
hard work and commitment
to Catholic education
from all of our students,
staff and families.”
The coveted National
Blue Ribbon Schools
award affirms the hard
work of educators, families
and communities in
creating safe and welcoming
schools where students
master challenging and
engaging content. Now in
its 37th year, the National
Blue Ribbon Schools Program
has bestowed recognition
on more than 9,000
schools.
The Department recognizes
all schools in one of
two performance categories,
based on all student
scores, student subgroup
scores and graduation
rates:
• Exemplary High Performing
Schools are
among their state’s highest
performing schools
as measured by state assessments
or nationally
normed tests.
• Exemplary Achievement
Gap Closing Schools are
among their state’s highest
performing schools
in closing achievement
gaps between a school’s
student groups and all
students.
School officials will represent
SSCM at a two-day
awards ceremony in Washington,
D.C., where they
will join other esteemed
educators, share best practices
with each other, and
celebrate their hard-won
achievements.
