BRINGING HISTORY HOMEHAREWOOD HOUSE andDAMEROSEHAYJust behind the Keyhaven War Memorial isHarewood Green which once was HarewoodHouse, and also well known in fiction asDamerosehay.Mildred stayed in Harewood House following thedeath of her husband in 1903 until she died in1929. During her time in Keyhaven she was anactive member of the community by donating tothe Cottage Hospital in Milford and also playing amajor role in the erection of the Keyhaven WarMemorial.Harewood House - 1935In 1826 Harewood was advertised for sale as:‘A vacant freehold gentleman’s cottage andLand at Keyhaven, 3 miles westward ofLymington. The much admired cottage Residenceof the late William Greer, Esq. at Keyhaven, withwell-arranged gardens, and five acres of veryexcellent Pasture Land adjoining; commandingmost delightful and extensive marine views, andsituated opposite to a branch of the Solent,which affords the best anchorage for agentleman’s yacht.’Later it became the home of the Hon. MildredMary Coleridge the daughter of Sir JohnColeridge, Lord Chief Justice, and great grandnieceof Samuel Taylor Coleridge.Her private life caused a major legal issue whenMildred married Charles Adams a lawyer,publisher and anti-vivisectionist (and wassecretary of the anti-vivisection society). MildredColeridge was also a member of this society, andfollowing the death of Charles’ wife in 1880, sheleft home to live with him which led to majorproblems within her family.Harewood House had been vacant for someyears and, following the marriage of Mildred andCharles in 1885, they purchased it in 1896.Harewood House had been vacant for someyears and, following the marriage of Mildred andCharles in 1885, they purchased it in 1896.On her death she left everything to Eva Adams,the wife of Charles’s nephew who had died in1920.Following Mildred’s death Eva Adams ran thehouse as a Private Hotel and the author ElizabethGoudge stayed there on at least two occasions.Elizabeth’s father was professor of Divinity atOxford. As her mother was unwell they lookedfor somewhere near the sea for her to rest. Themost convenient train station from Oxford wasNew Milton, where they rented a bungalow atBarton which they eventually bought for £500.It was when Elizabeth stayed in Barton that shestarted to write seriously.She later said that:“I owe more than I can say to Barton. Here Ireally discovered the Keyhaven saltmarshes thathad caught hold of me in my schooldays, and itwas from Barton that I first went to stay withMrs. Adams at the house I have calledDamerosehay.”At some point after her first stay at Keyhaven,Elizabeth published the first of her trilogy ofbooks known as the Eliots of Damerosehay: TheBird in the Tree 1940, The Herb of Grace 1948and The Heart of the Family 1953.She said, “One of the things about which I ammost thankful is that someone or somethingprompted me to write three books about animaginary family living at Damerosehay, and thatthose three seem to be my readers favourites.”Following the death of her mother in May 1951,Elizabeth stayed at Harewood House for the lasttime when she found it was beginning to lookshabby and the garden overgrown. Soon afterthis Mrs. Adams sold Harewood House and it wasrun for a while as an ordinary hotel.
