Court dismisses ADP’s appeal
against Wike’s re-election victory
By Davies
Iheamnachor
PORT HARCOURT—
COURT of Appeal
sitting in Port Harcourt,
Rivers State, has dismissed
the appeal filed by
governorship candidate of
Action Democratic Party,
ADP, Victor Fingesi, against
the re-election of Governor
Nyesom Wike and Peoples
Democratic Party, PDP, for
lack of proof.
The five-man appeal
panel affirmed the decision
of the Governorship
Election Petition Tribunal,
which held that Wike was
duly elected as declared by
the Independent National
Electoral Commission,
INEC.
The lead judge of the
panel, Justice H. N.
Ogunwimiji, disclosed that
the lower court erred by not
allowing the petitioner to
amend certain paragraphs
in his petition.
He held that the lower
court was right when it
ruled that INEC had the
right to suspend electoral
process even in the middle
of the elections.
Ogunwimiji said the
petitioner failed to prove
his case in other issues
raised and hence agreed
with the ruling of the court,
which affirmed Wike's
victory.
However, counsel for the
ADP candidate, Dalakpo
Anthony, regretted the
decision, adding that he
would consult his client for
further steps.
On his part, counsel for
Wike and PDP, Ike Udenna,
described the judgement as
well deserved, and a victory
for INEC, Wike, PDP as
well as Rivers people.
UPF faults Onuesoke on PSML probe by Reps
COORDINATOR of
Udu Positive Force,
UPF, a social-economic
development group of
Udu sons and daughters
led by Chief Galaxy
Udukparobo, has taken a
swipe at Chief Sunny
Onuesoke, a peoples
Democratic Party, PDP,
chieftain from Delta
State over his comments
on the committee set up
by the House of
Representatives to probe
activities of Premium
Steel and Mines
Limited, PSML, over the
resuscitation of the plant
for production.
UPF warned Chief
Onuesoke to stop
meddling in affairs of the
company, as the Udu
people, who are host to
PSML, the former Delta
Steel Company, DSC,
are in a better position to
know what the company
was doing or not doing
well.
Addressing newsmen
in Ovwian, Udukparobo
faulted Onuesoke for
“meddling in matters
outside his brief,
warning that as a
contractor to PSML, he
should allow Udu
handle their relationship
with the company.
He stressed that Chief
Ben Igbakpa, who
moved the motion on the
floor of the National
Assembly expressing
concern over the state of
the plant, was more
knowledgeable in the
affairs of the company
than Chief Onuesoke.
He commended
Igbakpa for the courage
in moving the motion,
adding “let Onuesoke
tell the world how many
years it takes to turn
around a steel smelting
shop.
“Let him tell the media
from his supposed
‘knowledgeable standpoint’
how many times
steel products or rods
have been sold by his
employers since they
took over years ago.”
The group also
commended Francis
Waive for supporting
Igbakpa, urging them to
continue with “the probe
to unravel the
transactions, so
Nigerians will not be
ripped off, thereby
making nonsense of the
Federal Government’s
efforts towards industrial
revolution through DSC,
an integrated steel plant.
“We use this medium to
call on all men of
goodwill to support this
effort so that we can get
our company back to
production ways.”
FEGOCOOSA holds re-union
Old Students Association,
FEGOCOOSA, founded
since 1977, concluded
plans for its annual end of
which will be held on
December 14 in Lagos.
41 inmates on death
row in Akwa Ibom
By Harris Emmanuel
UYO—NO fewer than
41 inmates, including
two females and 39 males,
are on deathrow in the Uyo
detention centre of Nigeria
Correctional Service, the
State Controller, Alex
Oditah, has said.
The Controller made the
disclosure while fielding
questions from reporters as
part of activities to mark a
week-long first Inmates
Rehabilitation Concert
with the theme “Effective
Leadership: A Recipe for
Peace, Security and
National Development.”
Omoyeni, informed that
this year’s reunion, with
the theme “CHANGING
TEMPOS,” is aimed to
propagate the history of
the school.
He also explained that
the black tie event will lay
emphasis on integrations
and mentorship,
especially for the
younger old students
and networking.
Oditah, who was
flanked by some senior
officers, said the nine
inmates who were on
death sentence in Eket
were moved to Port
Harcourt, while Ikot
Abasi and Ikot Ekpene
have none facing the
hangman’s noose.
He noted that 70
percent of inmates in the
four facilities across the
state were those awaiting
trials, so it was difficult to
engage them in skills
acquisition and
educational programmes
because of the flexibility
of their stay.
