If they haven’t already realised, business owners know it's high time to shake up the teams
when growth stagnates, sales decline, staff turnover increases, or a bad atmosphere creates
discord in the company. In the future, if they want to be where the action is, companies
will have to repeatedly reinvent themselves while retaining the best talents on the market.
A company’s skilled workers are like a band put together by the human resources department,
ensuring that the team rocks the market with ingenious ideas. Remaining competitive
during the digital transformation thus depends enormously on the openness, willingness to
innovate, and interdisciplinary collaboration of a company’s employees.
Corporate influencer and team engineer Thomas Schauffert helps companies to find their
identity and establish a culture of innovation. Thanks to his unique THS method, used throughout
the world, he programmes teams for success by freeing their innovative spirit. He provides
valuable insights and assigns roles: those who march vigorously to the company’s beat, play
the first violin, or humbly strike the triangle, those who play the drums, sing in tune to the
melody, or get out of step with unusual ideas - he teaches them all a common denominator,
opens them up to entrepreneurial thinking, and composes the harmonious ensemble that
leads to the best performance. This is how teams achieve economic hits! Innovate or it´s too
late! Orhidea Briegel, publisher
Orhideal IMAGE: Mr. Schauffert, in order
to ensure success in the technological age
companies must constantly reinvent themselves
in much shorter cycles. As an expert
on the spirit of innovation, you are brought
in to inspire employees to become more
entrepreneurial and creative, and to help
companies to attract future-oriented professionals.
What are extremely innovative
companies doing differently?
Thomas Schauffert: You can’t order a team
to be innovative and curious. Innovation, intuition
and creativity come from within. If parts
of a corporate team are stuck in the past, the
openness of the rest of the team is curtailed.
I make sure that everyone in the team opens
up to new ideas and identifies with their role.
As a result, companies automatically become
employee magnets and drivers of innovation.
A culture of innovation attracts the right professionals
and makes the most of the available
resources. The corporate identity is strengthened,
and many employee problems solve
themselves.
Christian Kusch: What are the areas in
which ideas and innovations are sought?
Thomas Schauffert: This varies greatly and
stretches across all departments. Some companies
act preventatively and use me to put
their entire innovation culture to the test.
Others have acute difficulties, such as stagnating
growth, dropping sales, obstacles to development,
high staff turnover, low employer
attractiveness, and digitisation problems. In order
to open their employees up to solutions, they
call me in, either for one-off consulting with the
company’s decision-makers, or for team seminars,
as well as for special retreats and events.
Orhideal IMAGE: You have developed the
special THS method for your clients, and it is
very much in demand with HR departments.
Your technological vision is combined with
neuroscientific aspects to create these unique
management and team seminars in which
music plays a central role. How do music and
progress go together?
Thomas Schauffert: You shouldn’t just look at
music from an aesthetic point of view. It is no accident
that music is the subject of research in, for
example, mathematics, communications science,
medicine, and neuroscience. Business success is
based on culture, communication, learning, and
integration of human aspects into technological
progress. These are areas which can be
portrayed by music, and which can play
a role in HR departments. My openmindset
approach enables me to increase
openness, learning, and flexibility, all
of which are essential in these times of
great change. I shake people out of the
comfortable compartmentalised thinking
which unfortunately predominates
in everyday business life.
Orhideal IMAGE: As an expert in
innovation with international experience
in both the technological and
musical fields, you know the human
pitfalls which often block entrepreneurial
progress. Tell us more about
you, Mr. Schauffert. When did you
become aware of the symbiotic relationship
between management
know-how, engineering and music?
Thomas Schauffert: I have been passionate
about both technology and music
since I was ten years old. I started performing
as a professional musician in
1984, and have appeared on major stages,
TV and radio. I learnt to play eight
musical instruments, and also to compose
and produce, which incidentally is
not just a creative process, but also technically
demanding. After founding my
own recording studio, I composed and
produced around 150 of my own songs,
released 10 albums, promoted countless
artists and built a global elite-level network
in the music industry.
The power of music also helped me
through my studies to become an electrical
engineer. While the others had
to study for hours, I would make music,
opening my mind and passing my
exams with ease. I found learning easy.
Today, my core competency is empowering
other people to learn more easily
using my open-mindset approach.
Christian Kusch: Is that speed learning
through music, then?
Thomas Schauffert: Well, I didn’t
really get involved with the scientific
phenomenon behind it until much later.
Initially, for around 20 years, my
passion for music accompanied me on
my global career in industry as a qualified,
management-level electrical engineer.
Eventually, the two areas merged
together to form a method. I was responsible
for corporate growth in various
industries. That’s when I discovered
that modern leadershiprequirements are
perfectly rounded off by a musically inspired
process of personal development.
Orhideal IMAGE: And that sparked
your ambition to make this method
accessible to as many companies as
possible?
Thomas Schauffert: That’s right. From
this point, I developed a concept of
how to use the power of music in teams
and companies, even when people think
they’re not musical. Based on the combination
of training, music, composition,
engineering and mental coaching,
I founded my current company "THS
sounds words & life" in 2006. Since
then, my know-how from the fields of
industry, communication and music has
"If you want your
company to remain
relevant in the
future, you need
an extremely
innovative
team."

“Competitive edge guaranteed!
Thanks to modern employers
to the business scene today.”
been applied in companies in the form
of the THS method.
What I grasped intuitively at a young
age, I can now explain in my lectures in
neuroscientific terms: how music acts
on our synapses, how it helps us to approach
learning in a way that benefits
the brain, and how it supports us in
mastering leadership and complexity. I
am particularly fascinated by research
into neuroplasticity with music. This is
the brain’s ability to actively change its
structure and build bridges to existing
knowledge throughout a person’s entire
life. Using THS, I create new dynamics
in rigid company constructs and
teams.
Christian Kusch: That makes sense
to me. If you’re open and don’t shy
away from innovation, you will learn
more and thus acquire new skills.
Thomas Schauffert: I experience daily
how THS enables people to open their
minds and learn almost anything they
want. There are dormant talents within us
all that can become visible through inspiration.
HR departments no longer consider
that a candidate with many talents
is an uncoordinated “jack of all trades,
master of none”.
These days, all-rounders are of tremendous
value to the working world of the
future. They are the visionaries who will
make the best possible use of digitisation
options across departments. Therefore, it
is very important to determine the composition
and typology of a team before
holding a seminar. Modern employers
with innovative corporate cultures are
successful because they don’t compartmentalise
their employees, but enable
them to put their many talents to good
use for the company.
And you already have employees like this,
who don’t just slave away unimaginatively,
but who help to shape the company. Give
these employees creative freedom, and
your company will grow like never before!
Orhideal IMAGE: Wonderful! That's
why we have integrated your knowledge
base into the Orhideal expert
pool for ideal employers. So do you
also take account of progressive digitisation
in your seminars?
Thomas Schauffert: Definitely. Automation
is advancing at a rapid pace. Companies
are making increasing use of artificial
intelligence (AI). This development
will change the world of work even more
than the Internet revolution. It’s a very
serious stage of mechanisation. Nothing
that we need to fear if we make good use
of this opportunity. But companies need
to prepare their HR departments for it.
They face the challenge of harmonising
human intelligence with artificial intelligence.
Employees will have to take on
different tasks, and need to be open to
this. That's where my method comes in.
Christian Kusch: You have the great
advantage that you understand both
sides: on the one hand, the automation,
that is to say the technical requirements
of digitisation, and on
the other, the needs of the HR department?
Thomas Schauffert: Yes, Mr. Kusch,
that is indeed very beneficial. It makes no
sense to accelerate developments in the
HR department without taking into ac-
Orhideal IMAGE: Do you see artificial
intelligence as serious competition for
humans?
Thomas Schauffert: Not if we wake up
and adapt our learning systems and work
environments to it. This requires an overhaul
of all company processes, including in
the HR department. I provide the impetus
for this. When robots become our new colleagues,
they will relieve us of administrative
coordination and monitoring tasks. We
have the opportunity to focus our human
resources on their irreplaceable attributes
such as experimentation, improvising and
brainstorming. I open them up to this. I am
already securing a significant competitive
advantage for companies today. Companies
who are already strengthening their employees’
decision-making skills and creativity, in
combination with automation, will benefit
from maximum performance. Because in
contrast to AI, people can recombine ideas,
make decisions, develop strategies and thus
repeatedly introduce innovations. We just
need to focus on our strengths: individuality
and human curiosity! This will always
differentiate us from robots. There's an interesting
