Mount Sterling ready for
Christmas in the Village
By Kristy Zurbrick
The South Charleston Community
Club blends the tried-and-true with funand-new
each time it hosts Christmas in
South Charleston.
“We have a lot of tradition—23 years of
tradition—and we add a little more detail
each year,” said Jennifer McKee, Community
Club president and
Christmas in South
Charleston chairperson.
This year’s celebration
takes place from 4 to 8 p.m.
Dec. 4 throughout downtown South
Charleston. New features this year include
a wreath and poinsettia sale at town
hall, music broadcast in front of the
Luckey Block, and a new downtown location
for the cinnamon roll truck. Elf Village
has moved to VC Studio, a more
centralized location, and includes a photo
booth this year.
“We have more vendors than ever,”
McKee added. “Last year, we got our feet
wet with two vendor locations (First Presbyterian
Church and Gilbert’s Youth Center).
Both are completely full this year.”
Event organizers are once again asking
residents and businesses along routes 41
and 42 in town to decorate their windows,
houses and/or yards with white lights for
White Light the Village. This year, Journey
of Faith Church is offering to help
anyone along those routes with putting up
lights. Call (937) 206-8520.
The Community Club’s longstanding
raffle is back with a grand prize of $500 in
cash. Dozens of other prizes are up for
grabs, including cash, gift
certificates, and merchant
services. Tickets are $1
each or six for $5 and can
be purchased at various locations
in advance or the night of the
drawing until 7:45 p.m. The drawing will
be held at 8 p.m. at First Presbyterian
Church, 15 N. Chillicothe St. Participants
do not need to be present to win.
Children have a chance to win cash
prizes, too, through “village passport.”
Participants visit as many businesses as
possible to have their passports stamped,
then turn the passports in at First Presbyterian
Church where a drawing will be
held. One boy and one girl will win $50
each. Passports will be available at participating
businesses.
around downtown Mount Sterling.
Features include a Christmas tree lot in the parking lot in front
Churches, organizations, crafters and vendors will sell goods at
Visitors who get a special card stamped at each participating
business earn chances to win a gift basket valued at $100. Additionally,
the Chamber will have five photo opportunity stations set
up around town. Anyone who uploads photos taken at all five stations
The Chamber is hosting several contests. For the house decorating
house that is decorated and lit during that period will be eligible.
Judging for the chili cook-off and baking contest starts at 4:30 p.m.
decorating contest will be announced.
Live music is planned. The Community Choir will perform at
the gazebo at 5:30. The Darlington Family Carolers will sing at 7
Pioneers wrap up season as regional runners-up
By Pat Donahue
Messenger Photographer
Jonathan Alder’s football team came into
the Div. III regional final game with a perfect
12-0 record, facing off against the 11-1
Bishop Hartley Hawks on Nov. 22 at
Hilliard Darby High School.
The Hawks came out strong and struck
first with a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
Alder got back in the game to tie things up
in the second quarter.
The Hawks went up 13-6 in the third
quarter. In the fourth quarter, Jonathan
Alder took the lead for the first time, going
up 14-13 with about eight minutes to go in
the game.
In a tough back and forth battle, Hartley’s
running game made its way down the
field. Senior Jalen January led the way,
scoring his third touchdown on the night
after which the Hawks added two extra
points to go back on top 21-14.
The Pioneers took over the ball on the
35-yard line with 1:23 left on the clock.
Quarterback Taber Headings chipped away
at the 65-yard task at hand, whittling the
clock down to 8 seconds for what would be
a final shot at the end zone.
Hartley senior George Dunor got to it
first with a goal line interception, taking
the ball the length of the field to wrap of the
game with a 27-14 win.
Jonathan Alder defensive back Jackson Izzard (5) fights for an interception
as he wrestles the ball away from Hartley wide receiver
Richard Kenny to stop a Hartley drive in the second quarter. It was
the first of two take-aways for the Jonathan Alder junior.
Garret Proxmire has his eye on the goal line. The Jonathan Alder
senior took the ball and a Hartley player with him into end zone
to tie the game and give his kicker the chance to take the team to
a 14-13 lead with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter. Dylan
Moore did just that, making the extra point. Proxmire led Jonathan
Alder in rushing with 107 yards on 19 carries, including this nineyard
touchdown run.
Jonathan Alder quarterback J.T. Keith
rears back for a pass. in the second quarter,
Keith suffered a game-ending knee injury.
He left the game with a 9 of 12 pass
completion rate for 35 yards total.
Jonathan Alder sophomore Taber Headings
took over quarterback duties early in
the second quarter. He was 8 of 18 for 56
yards passing. He marched the Pioneers
down field on the final drive of the game
before Hartley intercepted his last throw
on the goal line as time ran out.

Casanova arrived at the shelter on June
24 as a stray. He is a boxer mix, about 2 years
old, and weighs about 59 pounds. He enjoys
pets and attention but also is content hanging
out with a good chew toy. He is a big goober
that loves to be out of his kennel, whether for
a walk or a car ride, and he sits well in the
backseat or passenger seat.
Casanova has gone through training
classes with one of the shelter’s employees. The employee says he
is a smart pooch who will catch on to what you are willing to teach
him. Casanova is a sweet and loving boy who will make a wonderful
companion in someone’s home. He would do best as an only child
hanging out with you on the sofa, binge watching your favorite television
shows.
Angelina has been FeLV/FIV tested and is
negative. She has been spayed and received
her rabies shots, vaccines and de-wormer.
She has been with the shelter since the
Aug. 9 after she was found running about
town by a citizen.
She is a sweet kitty who is all about the
pets and love. Once she gets attention, her
motor runs as loud as possible. If she’s not getting
attention, she is content just napping on a comfy bed or sofa.
Progress sometimes comes at a price, according to an
Mayor Billy Martin was less hopeful about concessions
found this to be true as they deliberated over a contract
Its purpose would be to assist in electric transmission
According to council member Becky Martin, the proposed
Farm Bill info sessions scheduled
Ohio State University Extension and the
USDA Farm Service Agency in Ohio are
partnering to provide a series of educational
Farm Bill meetings this winter to help producers
make informed decisions related to
enrollment in commodity programs.
The 2018 Farm Bill reauthorized the
Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) and Price
Loss Coverage (PLC) safety net programs
that were in the 2014 Farm Bill. While the
ARC and PLC programs under the new
farm bill remain very similar to the previous
farm bill, there are some changes that producers
should be aware of.
Farm Bill meetings will review changes
to the ARC/PLC programs, as well as important
dates and deadlines. Additionally, attendees
will learn about decision tools and
calculators available to help assess which
program best fits the needs of their farms
under current market conditions and outlook.
Enrollment for 2019 is open with the deadline set as March 15,
2020. Enrollment for the 2020 crop year closes June 30, 2020. Producers
can enroll for both 2019 and 2020
during the same visit to an FSA county office.
Producers have the opportunity to
elect to either ARC or PLC for the 2019 to
2023 crop years, with the option to change
their program election in 2021, 2022, and
2023.
The Madison County Farm Service
Agency and Madison County Extension Office
are offering three informational meetings
for producers. Meetings will be held at
the Engineer’s Conference Room at 825
A public hearing will be held at city hall at 6 p.m. Dec. 3 regarding
proposed changes to subdivision zoning rules. The proposal
calls for changing the allowed width of newly constructed roadways
from 32 feet to 36 feet. It also calls for allowing temporary versus
permanent shipping containers to be sited on certain properties.
Residents are welcome to attend and voice their opinions. This will
be the first public hearing held following the creation of the village’s
new zoning commission.
An enduring bond built on support and love
On a recent Saturday morning, I sat in my car, driving my dog,
Frankie, to see the vet. It would be his last trip to the vet. It would
be his last car ride.
As I drove to say my final goodbye to my beloved dog, I thought
back to more than 13 years ago when he was first in the backseat
of my car. We were just starting our journey together. I remember
I looked in the backseat. Frankie and his brother, Meeko, were
curled up together, just staring at me with confused looks on their
faces. They didn’t know me. They didn’t know they were going to
their new home. I felt overwhelmed
and uncertain of my
snap decision to bring home
two dachshund puppies.
It didn’t take long to fall in
cordle’s corner
love with Frankie and Meeko, but Frankie was always challenging.
It took a long time to potty train him. And obedience training—forget
that. Frankie rarely listened to me. I took him to puppy training
class. He learned to sit—that was it. He somehow passed the class
with the recommendation to repeat the course.
Frankie and I didn’t have the strongest bond at first. It was difficult
to get a read on him. He just did his own thing. I would take
him out for walks at the park or around the neighborhood and he
turned into a wild, feral animal. It was like I was not present. Only
his nose mattered, and I was the annoyance holding him back on
the leash. But once we were in the house, he would cuddle up to me
and become a sweet dog.
Frankie got into so much trouble. When I opened the refrigerator
door, he would come over, stick his head in and pull something out
and run away with it. Once he pulled out an entire holiday ham!
He would get into the bathroom trash can, pull out all the tissues
and tear them up.
The trouble didn’t stop at home. It extended to the parks, as well.
My sister and I took Frankie and Meeko to Three Creeks Metro
Park once, and they decided to roll in a large quantity of goose poop.
The smell was horrid. I was gagging and almost threw up driving
them back home—it was a good 20-minute drive, mind you. When
we went to Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park, Frankie stuck his
head under a bathroom stall door. There was a woman in there who
screamed. I was so embarrassed. Another time at the same park,
Frankie and Meeko encountered bison. The bison were right by the
fence. Of course, the dachshunds had to prove they were the dominant
animals and barked at the large bison.
For all the trouble Frankie caused, he was also a sympathetic
dog and seemed to know when he was really needed. In 2015, my
dad died of leukemia. After his memorial service when everyone
had left the house and I was alone, I sat down on the stairs and just
cried. Frankie came to me and sat on the landing. I just hugged him
and cried for a while. He sat there the whole time and let me. Like
he knew I needed comfort. Then in 2017, Frankie’s brother, Meeko,
died. We got home from the emergency animal hospital in the early
morning hours. I went right to bed and just laid there crying. Again,
Frankie came up to me and just laid his head on my shoulder. I held
him all morning. I think we both needed the comfort.
Shortly before Meeko passed away, Frankie lost his vision to
SARDS, Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome. It was
just heartbreaking. Image being able to see one day and the next day,
it’s dark. He was so confused and depressed. Many dogs adapt quite
well to vision loss, but Frankie never really did. He became a shell of
his former self. He used to be a highly confident and independent
dog. SARDS took that from him. I tried everything I could think of
to help him. I did research. I joined a Facebook group for owners of
blind dogs to get tips and see what success other people had. We put
up gates by the stairs and blocked off hard edges so he would be safe.
I even put barriers around my bed so he wouldn’t fall off.
Taking care of Frankie became a full-time job for my sister and
me. He got anxious when he thought he was
alone, so we tried to arrange our schedules
so he would rarely be alone. I even adopted
another dog to keep him company. Eventually,
Frankie became more accustomed to
being blind, but he was a different dog. I
still loved him just the same. Maybe even
more. I seemed to develop an even deeper
bond with Frankie in caring for him.
Last year, Frankie started having heart
and kidney issues. He was on several different
medications for his heart, which I was
told would affect his kidneys. I knew that
would eventually be a problem. He started
showing signs of kidney failure. He stopped
eating, kept getting sick and had no
strength. I knew it was time.
I think Frankie knew it was time, too. Almost
every night in the week leading up to
his death, Frankie slept with his head on
my shoulder. It was as if he knew his time
with me was ending and he knew I would
need all the comfort I could get. That Saturday
morning, I laid in bed with him as long
as I could, knowing it would be the last
morning we had snuggle time.
Frankie was a true joy. He was so brave
when blindness struck and when he was
sick. I am a better person for having
Frankie in my life. Because of him, I am a
more patient, caring and compassionate
person. I think of his strength in dealing
with adversity and try to draw inspiration
from him in going through my grief.
One thing comforts me. Frankie and
Meeko are together now. They are both
healthy and happy. And I am so lucky to
have been their mom.
‘Frozen’ sequel won’t leave audiences in the cold
There were minimal expectations
After a pleasant evening of charades with Anna’s
friends, Sven and Olaf (Josh Gad), Elsa begins to hear
a voice coming from the north. Knowing that it comes
While Elsa is the biggest star of the franchise, this film gives a
lot of love and attention to the understated Anna, who probably has
New pay ranges for city parks and rec employees
By Andrew Garrett
Staff Writer
Some employees of the city of London
gained an increase to their potential earnings,
thanks to legislation passed by city
council on Nov. 21.
Council unanimously adopted an ordinance
that sets new pay ranges for employees
of the parks and recreation department.
Council member Rex Castle was absent.
The new hourly pay ranges are as follows:
park and pool maintenance worker,
$11-$25; recreation assistant, $11-$25;
clerk, $9-$14; and lifeguard, $9.45-$15.
Council member Henry Comer asked city
administrators and his fellow council members
if anyone had done comparison research
on the pay ranges.
Joe Mosier, London’s safety service director,
said the ranges were comparable to municipalities
of similar size to London. He said
the cap for lifeguards might be a little higher
but that it was necessary because lifeguards
are “hard to get.” He also reminded council
that the department was small and many of
its positions are seasonal.
In new business, council heard the first
reading of legislation that, if passed, would
set new salary ranges for city department
heads and non-union personnel. Topping
the list of potential earners is the position
of safety service director, which can make as
much as $96,014, followed by the police and
fire chiefs with a maximum earning potential
of $94,336 each.
Council member Andy Hitt, who sponsored
the ordinance, said the new ranges
will make the positions more competitive
London resident Doug Pyles, addressed
council regarding the city’s new water plant
and its accompanying well that is unusable
due to high levels of ammonia.
City leaders are well aware of the situation,
said Mayor Patrick Closser.
“This is the worst $7 million paperweight,”
Closser said, referring to the plant
which is located on East High Street.
Pyles exhorted council to find a solution
for removing, or at least diluting, the level
of ammonia in the water at the site. He suggested
constructing a waterfall to aerate the
water, as ammonia is readily removed from
water when in contact with air, he said. Another
possibility, he said, would be to pump
water from an older well into the new well
to dilute that water to an ammonia level acceptable
to the Environmental Protection
Agency. Pyles said his suggestions were inspired
by a simple internet search.
Closser thanked Pyles for his concern
and research, but said he believed it was
something best for engineers to figure out.
Council President Joe Russell also
thanked Pyles for his interest and suggestions
but agreed with the mayor that the
course taken must be well thought out.
“The last thing we want to do is put more
money into this project and then still not be
able to get it operational,” Russell said.
sisters, Ethel, Myrtle, Alma and Virginia.
Graveside services were held on Nov. 23,
2019, in Somerford Township Cemetery. The
family was served by Eberle Fisher Funeral
Home and Crematory, London.
RUNYON
Amanda Horne Runyon, 38, of South
Charleston, formerly of West Jefferson,
Ohio, went to be with the Lord on Nov. 24,
2019, with her loving family at her side. A
mother's love for her child is like no other
and that was no different with Amanda and
her daughter, Katie. You were always sure
to hear Amanda say, “That’s my Katie,”
with a smile, no doubt. Amanda was an avid
Ohio State Buckeye fan, loved shopping
with friends and family, and loved her dog,
Georgia, and her cat, Grayson. Amanda was
an inspiration to everyone she met. Her
smile and her personality were infectious.
People’s lives were greatly enriched just by
knowing Amanda. She was preceded in
death by: her fathers, Darius Horne and
Roger Bishop; and grandfather, Franklin
Horne. She is survived by: her parents,
Gwen (Jerry) Pence and Lydia (Allen) Mc-
Call; her loving husband, Nicholas Runyon;
daughter, Kaitlin Runyon; sister, Vanessa
Horne; brother, Franklin Horne; brother-inlaw,
Richard (Nita) Runyon; sister-in-law,
Amanda (Todd) Flowers; father-in-law,
Richard (Jesse) Runyon; best friend, Laurie
(Chad) Nulph; numerous nieces, nephews
and friends, all who will miss her greatly.
Funeral services were held Nov. 29 at
Rader-McDonald-Tidd Funeral Home, West
Jefferson, followed by burial at Hampton
Cemetery, West Jefferson. The family request
that friends and family consider donating
blood in Amanda’s memory at a local
Red Cross. The Central Ohio Red Cross was
near and dear to Amanda’s heart.

London Mayor Patrick Closser (front left) takes a selfie with Joe Watson’s
eighth-period government class. To study elections and political
parties, each of Watson’s classes created a city and elected
officials. Closser spoke to all of the classes. Tate Wilson and Riley
Kohn served as mayor and vice mayor, respectively, of eighth period’s
Donutville. Pictured in the background are Joe Watson (back
left) and London Middle School Principal Michael Belmont.
Government lesson
London Mayor Patrick Closser visited every sixth-grade government
class at London Middle School on Nov. 19.
All seven of Joe Watson’s classes are studying elections and political
parties. Each class is running their own government with a
mayor, vice mayor and other positions. The classes are competing
against one another to see who can run the most effective and efficient
communities.
Closser spoke to students about his election experience, his political
party affiliation, his thought process for picking a party, and
the decisions he made and steps he took to run successful election
campaigns.
Watson requires each student to join one of four fictitious political
parties he creates. In the process, they must weigh the pros and
cons of each party.
Riders win regional title
By Jeff Pfeil
West Jefferson’s football team is headed
to the Final Four in the state playoffs.
On Nov. 23, the Roughriders defeated
Ohio Heritage Conference co-champion
West Liberty Salem 34-0 at Sidney High
School to claim the OHSAA Div. V Region
20 trophy.
Though temperatures were cold and
snow was falling, the Roughriders came out
red hot to take control of the game early. Recovering
a pooch kickoff, West Jefferson
rushed down the short field to take a 7-0
lead at 9:56 on a 2-yard rush by Gabe Jones.
West Jefferson’s defense was tough all
night, holding the Tigers to 113 total yards.
The offense gained 410 yards with only 66
coming by the pass.
The Riders took a 28-0 lead into halftime,
went back to work in the second half, and
scored their final touchdown in the third
quarter. The remainder of the game was
played with a running clock.
West Jefferson avenged their only loss of
the season to the Tigers (43-39) to advance
to a 12-1 record.
The Riders travel to Chillicothe Hernstein
Field on Nov. 30 to play Ironton (12-1)
in a 7 p.m. kickoff in state semi-final action.
line. Jones rushed for 287 yards on 29 attempts and scored all five of the Riders’
touchdowns on rushes of 2, 1, 39, 95 and 24 yards to lead West Jefferson to victory.

Dedication planned for historic district signage
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
South Charleston’s historic district has been on the National
Register of Historic Places since 1978, but only recently was a sign
installed declaring that fact.
At 1:45 p.m. Dec. 8, prior to the Christmas in the Opera House
concert at 2 p.m., the South Charleston Heritage Commission will
dedicate the new historic marker next to town hall at 35 S. Chillicothe
St.
The Heritage Commission purchased the sign with a grant from
the William G. Pomeroy Foundation of Syracuse, N.Y. The grant
covered the sign, pole and shipping at a cost of $1,100.
The Pomeroy Foundation is a private, grant-making foundation
established in 2005. One of the foundation’s main initiatives is to
help people celebrate their community’s history, primarily through
roadside markers. Since 2006, the foundation has funded nearly
1,000 roadside markers and plaques nationwide.
Sue Mattinson, Heritage Commission president, said she first
learned of the Pomeroy Foundation last spring at a regional meeting
of the Ohio Local History Alliance.
“I looked at what they do and thought, ‘Whoa, that’s a really
town.
South Charleston’s historic district encompasses
nearly 16 blocks centered on
Jamestown and Chillicothe streets and
identifies approximately 40 houses built by
Edwards. It was added to the Register of
Historic Places in 1978, however no sign
was installed to commemorate the special
designation.
Mattinson said that by 2010, when she
moved to South Charleston, the existence of
the historic district was no longer common
knowledge. The new sign and inclusion of
its GPS coordinates on the Pomeroy Foundation’s
website will help to change that.
“It is a source of community pride and
sense of our history pulling us together as a
community,” she said.
South Charleston’s historic district is one
of 40 Clark County sites listed on the National
Register of Historic Places. Ohio is
good deal,’” she said.
The National Register of Historic Places is an official list of properties
recognized by the federal government as worthy of preservation
for their local, state or national significance in U.S. history,
architecture, archaeology, engineering or culture.
The late George Berkhofer was responsible for submitting South
Charleston’s historic district for inclusion on the register. As
founder of the South Charleston Heritage Commission, Berkhofer
realized the historical significance of the town’s architecture.
The central figure in that architecture was Edward Edwards, a
carpenter who moved to South Charleston in 1843 and proceeded
to build several houses in town. When he died in 1897, his obituary
stated that he had built or remodeled more than 90 percent of the
The Heritage Commission of South Charleston will host its 14th
annual Civil War-era themed New Year’s Eve Grand Ball from 8:30
p.m. to midnight Dec. 31 at South Charleston’s Town Hall & Opera
House, 35 S. Chillicothe St. Proceeds go to upkeep of the non-profit
organization’s three historic properties in the village.
Guests to the New Year’s Eve Ball are asked to come in clothing
representative of the 1860s, in keeping with the theme. Modern formal
dresses for women and suits for men are also acceptable. Soldiers
are asked to refrain from wearing hobnail boots.
The 73rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment Band will provide the
music. The brass and percussion group is based in Columbus and comprised
of musicians from around Ohio. The group has released a CD
and performed at re-enacting events across the eastern United States.
Previous dance experience is not necessary to attend the ball.
Dance master Katie Humphreys will provide instructions before
each dance starts and will call the steps while the music plays.
A buffet of appetizers and desserts will be served in the downstairs
community room, and a toast will be held at midnight to the
singing of “Auld Lange Syne.” For an additional fee, Emily Ross of
Emily’s Photography in South Vienna will accommodate guests who
wish to have their portraits taken.
A pre-ball reception will take place at the Isaac Davidson house,
next door to the Opera House. This stately brick mansion, built in
the same time period as the Opera House by noted local architect
Edward Edwards, features much of its original decor. At 7:15 p.m.
and 7:45 p.m., Davidson will give tours of the first floor of his home
for a freewill donation. Cookies and punch will be available, as well.
The Heritage Commission invites all ages to the grand ball. Tickets
are $25 per person or $45 per couple through Christmas, after
which all tickets are $30 each. Well-behaved children under the age
of 12 are admitted for free.
Reservations may be made at eventbrite.com (fee applies), by
cash, check, or credit card at the Charleston Pharmacy, or by mailing
a check to: The Heritage Commission, P.O. Box 457, South
‘Everything that’s been done here is humbling’
A dedication ceremony for South Charleston’s new veterans memorial
took place on Nov. 11. The memorial project was a collaborative
effort among members of the community and students at
Southeastern High School. The memorial sits at the corner of
Woodward Street (State Route 41) and South Church Street.
–Messenger photos by Theresa Hennis
Charlie Bertemes, a 2018 graduate of Southeastern
High School and former student council leader, welcomes
the community to the dedication ceremony
and thanks everyone who helped make the memorial
possible. Bertemes designed the black granite monument
after researching other monument designs
from around the nation. He borrowed some ideas
from those monuments and came up with his own
design idea. The design then evolved from the original
concept Bertemes presented.
The memorial committee sold personalized brick
pavers inscribed with the names of area residents
and veterans. The bricks surround the monument
which sits in the center of a red concrete star. Bricks
honoring veterans are grouped according to the
branch of service in which the honorees served.
Leonard Kadel, committee treasurer and an American
Legion Post 176 member, said, “This has been a
labor of love. One of the unique things about the memorial
is that bits of sand from Iwo Jima were poured
into each of the five areas representing the military
branches. Darryl Closser (a U.S. Navy veteran) of
London collected the sand in vials from Iwo Jima and
donated it to us. In my opinion, everything that’s
been done here is humbling.”
Three 30-foot tall flag poles fly the American, Ohio, and Prisoner
of War/Missing in Action flags at the monument, along
with poles flying flags that represent the five branches of the
military.
Members of American Legion Post 176 participated in the dedication of South Charleston’s new veterans
memorial. Members helped with much of the labor that went into preparing the site. Howard Myers, a veteran
and Post 176 member, was a driving force in organizing those who contributed labor and resources to finish
the project. He was unable to attend the ceremony as he was in the hospital with pneumonia.
