We all start

SOMEWHERE.

An abandoned airfield is an unusual place for the

birth of a university. But in the summer of 1969,

founding FIU president Chuck Perry set up shop

in the former air traffic controllers’ tower. The

tower had no phones, no drinkable water and

no furniture. President Perry decided that the

control tower should never be destroyed and so it

remains standing today at the center of campus,

as FIU’s Ivory Tower.

Our beginnings were unconventional; our

opening day in 1972 continued that trend.

With 5,667 students, it was the largest opening

enrollment in U.S. collegiate history.

The Torch Run was created as an Olympic-style

relay that began at the North Miami Campus

(BBC today) and concluded at the University Park

Campus (MMC today) with the lighting of the

Torch of Knowledge, Service and Understanding

which has served as a symbol of FIU’s mandate to

serve the community since the university opened

its doors in 1972.

In 2004, the Trail of the Torch was established

and has become one of the university’s largest

traditions with more and more students taking

part in the annual event.

Like its predecessor, the new incarnation of the

Trail of the Torch procession involves students

carrying a flame relay-style, this time from the

housing quad to the Torch site in front of PC

(Primera Casa).

Don't step

ON THE SEAL.

The Graham Center serves as the center of

student life at FIU. At the front of this building,

one can find the great seal of our university.

Legend has it, one of the men who engraved

the seal jokingly said to his friend, “Imagine if a

student steps on the seal and doesn’t graduate on

time.” They all laughed and continued working.

Little did they know how powerful those words

would be. Two years later, Javier Lopez came

into FIU as a freshman with big dreams and the

hope of completing college within three years.

He always wondered why the seal was engraved

on the floor, instead of on the wall. He had little

respect for it and frequently stepped on the seal

as he walked by. Javier took him nine years to

complete his degree.

Spinning the cube is a Panther-tested #TBT [Throwback Tradition]

of catching good fortune before a midterm or final.

DIRECTIONS

1 . Study

2. Open the app

3. Scan Marty’s Cube

4. Spin the cube!

LEGEND HAS IT...

Installed in 1998, the cube

made its home outside the

library and DM (Deuxieme

Maison) for 16 years. According

to legend, the tradition

was started by a group of

chemistry students that first

spun the cube for fun.

The kicker – they all started to

ace exams. Coincidence?

We think not.

Kissing

BRIDGE

Behind the Ryder Business Building is a

pond shaped like a heart. As time passed,

more and more couples began to visit the

area around the pond, and it soon became

known as the Kissing Pond. It is said that

any couple who kisses on the bridge over the

heart-shaped pond will be together for life.
