XPLORER MAPS: OUR STORY
In the late 1990s while living in Kenya, Canadian realist painter Chris Robitaille rendered a series of unbelievably
unique hand-drawn maps featuring different African countries.
It took a while J, but many years later (2012) my brother and I decided to begin a family adventure and make our
parents proud by merging sibling interests; world-class artistry with a passion for travel and public lands.
With strong feedback and encouragement from retail customers and wholesale accounts over the past few years, the
Xplorer Maps collection continues to grow and now includes National Parks, states, countries and worldwide travel
destinations.
Maps have been making strong connections between people and place for thousands of years. Timeless in appeal, we
sincerely hope these hand-drawn and interpretive “story” maps engage, educate and inspire you to “COME XPLORE
WITH US”!

THE ARTIST
Philanthropy/Public Lands
BULLET Originally from POINTS Toronto, Canadian-born of PLA artist partners
Chris
Robitaille graduated from the prestigious Ontario College
of Art. Upon graduation, he was awarded the Toronto Life
Magazine Award for Excellence in illustration.
He began his professional career at DDB Needham
Worldwide Advertising working as a storyboard artist
where his client list included Coca Cola, Levi’s, Labatt’s,
Porsche, Volkswagen and Time Magazine. While
vacationing in Kenya in 1992, Chris fell in love with its
people, landscapes and wildlife….and stayed for more
than twenty years! In addition to his love for realist oil
painting, Chris also discovered a passion for creating
hand-drawn maps of numerous African countries.
Since 2000, Chris (along with his wife Vanessa and their
children, Max and Becca) has traveled the world living
in Canada, Kenya, China, United Arab Emirates and
now Thailand. This incredible diversity of culture and
landscapes inspires his artistic creativity and deepens his
sense to “tell the stories” connecting people and place.
In 2010, Chris co-founded Xplorer Maps with his brother
Greg. Chris acts as the Creative Director and sole artist
personally responsible for every intricate detail on each
map custom crafted by hand.

MAPS
Xplorer Maps CONNECTS PEOPLE & PLACE! We create the world’s finest illustrated maps drawn entirely by hand; every
line, letter, and icon is uniquely original to each new map we render. Every map and illustration is the certified, authentic
work of world renowned wildlife artist Chris Robitaille.
These unique and fully custom maps are crafted in an antiquarian, old world style that is intended to pay homage to the
early cartographers. Using a meticulous pen & ink and watercolor process, each map is uncompromising in its attention
to detail and highlights the unique fauna, flora, history, culture and geography of the featured region.
Xplorer Maps seeks out collaborative partnerships with
PLA organizations (publiclandsalliance.org) to create all of
our National Park maps. This process results in an entirely
custom, unique and original product that is fully vetted and
approved by the respective organizations and their National
Park Service representatives for educational merit, historical
accuracy, cultural relevance and interpretive value.

Missoula, MT is Greg’s adopted home and the birthplace of
our company. It seems only fitting, therefore, that our first
map together would be Montana: Big Sky Country. Initially
intended for the visitor/tourist, our regional maps have
proven to be equally popular with residents that are proud
of where they live, work & play and are looking for a uniquely
personal gift for home, office or cabin décor.

The World
Not surprisingly, hand-drawn maps are extremely popular
and very prevalent throughout British and European history.
Chris is fascinated and inspired by the early cartographers
and their amazing attention to detail. Additionally, given
that Africa is essentially where it all started for Xplorer Maps,
it seems only natural that we continue to highlight special
places from around the globe.

have poured over many maps in a lifetime
I of travel, only a few have evoked the spirit
of a place. The creative nature of your maps
casts a light that captures the country, the
lake, the national park much like the maps
of old, when explorers returned from far
away places and shared the sights only a
few had seen. Your maps will join many
others on the walls of our home.
In our quest to find illustrated maps as art
for our mountain home, we were happy to
discover your Yellowstone map while visiting
that park over the summer. It was so unique,
colorful and informative, we searched you
out on the web and found that you had
more to offer and quickly acquired your
Glacier map and many others which are now
inspiring our next trips.
Xplorer Maps saved our wedding!! Our
initial idea fell through for our “thanks
for coming all this way gift” for our guests
and at the last minute less than a week
before the special day, Greg came through
with the San Francisco Collection (note
cards; wood post cards; and coasters). They
were a huge hit with everyone and became
instant conversation pieces. Thanks SO
much from the very happy newlyweds.

When I saw Xplorer’s map of Glacier, I
knew immediately it was the perfect gift
for a family member who has spent a lot of
time in Glacier. Above all else, having those
maps inspires people to want to explore wild
places. The maps are such a beautiful form of
art and view into some amazing wild places.
There is so much thought that goes into
Xplorer Maps’ products – from the gorgeous
colors to the fonts to the unique illustrations.
The level of detail is amazing.

Testimonials
ack in Switzerland after a truly unforgettable
Bride on my Harley-Davidson through America’s
National Parks, I was looking for something
special to share the memories and fortunately
found the Xplorer Maps website. Greg was
extremely helpful and a few days later I got my
three maps in mint condition. The quality of the
hand-drawn illustrations is fantastic! So good that
it brings a smile on my face each time I look at
them and discover yet another of the numerous
features depicting the magnificent regions.
Olivier Senn ~ Zurich, Switzerland
We are really pleased to have
purchased our Xplorer Map of Grand
Canyon National Park. We have it displayed
prominently on our “travel wall” in our
home. The artistic images and colors
instantly remind us of things we saw and
emotions we experienced while visiting
there and really help “tell the story”. It is
a beautiful piece of artwork.
Steve & Sharon Olson ~ Naperville, IL
was first drawn to Xplorer Maps at the San Francisco
I Gift Show where I was amazed to see they had handdrawn
maps of Africa. When I discovered they also had
many National Parks, I knew right away that they would
make the perfect gift for my 4th grade grandson so he
could wallpaper his bedroom wall with maps. One of
the most enjoyable things I get from maps is the sense
of adventure – of imagining where I can travel and what
I would see if I were able to go there. The wonderful
drawings in Xplorer Maps help me imagine what will be
there. We are a family of map lovers and travelers and
we have collected almost every place Xplorer Maps has
featured. We love them all!
Joan Sullivan ~ San Francisco, CA
After a recent trip to California, we had been
searching for special artwork to commemorate
our visit to Yosemite and after looking for quite
some time, we found the perfect map from Xplorer
Maps. These maps of special places around the
world are a “must-have” for travelers as we just
purchased the Xplorer Maps’ Yellowstone National
Park print and eagerly anticipate the release of
Alaska when it’s ready next year. We would like to
congratulate this ingenious artist very much for his
knowledge and skill in painting and when someone
asks, we can highly recommend both Chris Robitaille
and Xplorer Maps; job well done!

first saw Xplorer Maps when I was on vacation and
I when I asked the store owner how they sold, she
enthusiastically responded “we have created a sidebusiness
framing the maps for customers ready to
hang”. Shortly thereafter, I discovered that Lake Tahoe
was one of the hand-drawn maps they created: I was
thrilled and immediately reached out to them knowing
I had to have their products in my store. We just
received the full Xplorer Maps product line a week ago
and two of the products need to be reordered right

most importantly, our customers say they have never

We’ve watched Xplorer Maps for quite a while,
and wanted to carry them in our shop. From
the first day we put up our display, the map art has
been a runaway best seller, out-performing the
sales per square foot of all other items! The entire
team loves showing and selling the collection -
there is so much to talk about with this work that
it makes conversations with customers easy. The
pieces are gorgeous - everything from the magnets
to the framed prints (and all things in between) is
top quality, and our customers pick up on that. If
you can add only one item to your mix, have it be

We were initially drawn in by the Xplorer
hand-drawn map of the Great Smoky
Mountains. The images were beautiful,
unique, original and iconic; we simply didn’t
