The cosmopolitan city situated on two rivers provides all the

title UNESCO City of Music, is a centre for culture, an attractive

Why is Mannheim known as the city of squares?
While the streets in other cities bear the names of famous people,
Mannheim’s centre is made up of letters and numbers. Viewed
from Mannheim Baroque Palace, blocks A to K are lined up on the
left-hand side, while blocks L to U are on the right-hand side. The
individual blocks also have numbers, running either clockwise
(A to K) or anti-clockwise (L to U). The letters and numbers are
then combined to form an address. For instance, you can find the
town hall in “E5” and the “Stadthaus” in “N1”.

1 Wasserturm

The historic water tower is a famous landmark that can be found
in an impressive location. It is surrounded by one of the most
beautiful Art Nouveau complexes in Europe with fountains, footpaths
and arcades - a popular meeting place for locals and
visitors alike.
2 Kunsthalle Mannheim
Friedrichsplatz 4, 68165 Mannheim
The Kunsthalle Mannheim is one of the world’s oldest public
collections of modern art. The new building allows visitors to
take their time as they stroll between the gallery rooms, over
bridges and terraces, to the restaurant, shop and much more.
3 Benz Memorial
Friedrichsplatz /Augustaanlage, 68165 Mannheim
The greatest invention in individual mobility was born in
Mannheim. Carl Benz invented the first petrol engine-driven car
here. A memorial and a model in his honour are located at the
entrance to the boulevard called “Augustaanlage”.
4 m:con – Rosengarten Congress Centre

programme make a visit to the congress and event hall an unforgettable
experience.
5 Christuskirche

The Neo-Baroque exterior of this Protestant church in the
exclusive residential area of the city‘s eastern district is
magnificent. It is considered the most representative sacred
building in Mannheim.
6 National Theater Mannheim (NTM)

The renowned theater is one of the oldest and largest
municipal repertory theatres in Germany. Operas, plays and
the national youth theatre take to the stage here.
7 Mannheim Baroque Palace
Bismarckstraße, 68161 Mannheim
Mannheim Baroque Palace is the second largest Baroque palace
in Europe and sits impressively at the edge of the squares.
The former residence of the prince-electors with its extensive
fore court and palace church is among the city’s main attractions.
8 Jesuitenkirche
A4, 2, 68159 Mannheim
With its impressive Baroque exterior and its magnificent interior,
the former court church is a real highlight of the city. The
nave and dome captivate with their splendid stucco marble and
picturesque frescos.
9 Reiss-Engelhorn-Museums (rem)
C5, 68159 Mannheim
The largest municipally funded museum complex in southern
Germany with its four exhibition buildings forms a vibrant
museum quarter around the square “Toulonplatz”.
10 Paradeplatz
O1, 68161 Mannheim
A large square within the city centre, with the Grupello fountain
at its heart. Ten paths surrounded by green spaces lead to the
fountain in a star formation. The lively hustle and bustle of the
city can really be felt here.
11 Marktplatz
G1, 68159 Mannheim
The market square, home of the old town hall and parish church
of St Sebastian, provides the Baroque setting for a weekly market.
The square has many restaurants and an international flair.
12 Shopping Street “Planken”

The main shopping street in the middle of the city’s squares is a
modern, open-air pedestrian zone leading from the water tower.
Countless retailers and department stores offering everything
from A to Z provide all the shopper’s heart could desire.

Q6 & Q7, 68161 Mannheim
The modern shopping centre “Q 6 Q 7” provides three floors of
shopping and enjoyment. Offering everything from fashion to
interior designs to beauty, the shops and brands here will make
all your wishes come true.
14 Kapuzinerplanken
Kapuzinerplanken, 68161 Mannheim
A square designed as a pedestrian zone, with green trees and
an enticing range of restaurants and selected retailers. Here, you
can find a statue of “Blumepeter” – a Mannheim local legend.
15 Rheinterrassen
Rheinpromenade, 68163 Mannheim
Behind the Baroque palace you will find the former palace garden,
nowadays called “Rheinterrassen”, a broad, green promenade
along the River Rhine. The grasslands and paths directly on the
riverbanks invite you to linger or take a walk.
