Ada Lovelace Day (8th October)

Ada Lovelace Day (ALD) is an international celebration of the achievements of

women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).

It aims to increase the profile of women in STEM and, in doing so, create new role

models who will encourage more girls into STEM careers and support women already

working in STEM.

Ada was not your typical girl in the mid-1800s. At her mother's insistence, tutors

taught her mathematics and science. It was very unusual for such challenging subjects

to be taught to women during that period. At that time, girls were only expected

to learn music, singing, dancing, drawing, painting, French and needlework.

Ada became friends with Charles Babbage, who was a professor of Mathematics at

Cambridge University. He is known as "the father of computers”. She became interested

in his idea to design a computing machine called the ‘Analytical Engine’. Ada

did more than just translate the article on the ‘Analytical Engine’ – she also wrote

lots of notes including an ‘algorithm’ (step-by-step instructions) for how the machine

(computing device) would work.

ALD was celebrated by the pupils. They learnt about Ada’s achievements and how

she introduced many computer concepts and is known as the world’s first computer

programmer.

It is essential that we get rid of the negative views that STEM careers are only suited

to men. At Selly Park Girls’ School we encourage pupils to explore a variety of careers

and pursue their interests further.

World Maths Day - 15th October

World Maths Day is a worldwide celebration whereby pupils participate in competitions

and puzzles. This was celebrated by the pupils here at Selly Park where they

completed challenging Maths puzzles during form time. In addition to this, during

lessons, teachers incorporated numeracy into their teaching; giving pupils numeracy

rich experiences.

It is essential that pupils realise that Maths is an essential subject as they will need it

for every-day life. It is a fun subject that can provide much enjoyment.

Have a go and complete these puzzles.

Attendance Matters

Our ethos at Selly Park Girls’ School rests on four pillars. The second pillar is students

being kind and aspirational. Evidence proves that there is a direct correlation

between a student’s attendance and their attainment.

FFT Aspire, a respected educational body which analyses pupil results and pupil progress

has analysed GCSE results against student attendance nationally for all schools

in Summer 2019 and found that only 33% of students with below 90% attendance

achieved a grade 4 and above in English and Maths compared to 81% of students

with 98-100% attendance, thus proving that good attendance equals good grades.

In addition FFT Aspire has produced further analysis showing the correlation between

good attendance and student attainment focusing on student progress for example

showing students with 100% attendance achieved in 2019 exams almost a

whole grade above the national average see below:

Attendance Matters (continued…)

Role of Parents and Carers in Promoting Good Attendance

The school is keen to work in partnership with pupils, parents and external agencies

where necessary to ensure educational entitlement and regular attendance. The

taking of holidays during the school terms is strongly discouraged, it is hoped that

parents will help in the following ways:

Not letting their daughter take time off school for minor ailments

Arranging appointments and outings after school hours, or as late as possible

in the afternoon, at weekends or during school holidays

Not taking holidays during term time.

The importance of regular attendance is emphasised in the table below:

Attendance during one

school year

Equals days absent

Which is approximately

weeks absent

Which means this number

of lessons missed

95% 9 days 2 weeks 50 lessons

90% 19 days 4 weeks 100 lessons

85% 29 days 6 weeks 150 lessons

80% 38 days 8 weeks 200 lessons

75% 48 days 10 weeks 250 lessons

70% 57 days 11.5 weeks 290 lessons

65% 67 days 13.5 weeks 340 lessons

Fining parents for persistent non-attendance

Schools can fine parents for the unauthorised absence of their child from school,

where the child is of compulsory school age. If issued with a penalty notice, parents

must pay £60 within 21 days or £120 within 28 days. The payment must be

made directly to the local authority. The school follows the local authority’s code

of conduct for issuing penalty notices.

Latest Attendance News

School attendance in 2018-2019 was above the national average which is very

pleasing. The school is happy to report that attendance rates have continued to improve

due to a number of attendance initiatives including following local education

authority guidelines for fining parents and court action when necessary.

Year 10 Geography Fieldwork – Brindleyplace

As part of their work on urban regeneration, Year 10 Geography pupils visited

Brindleyplace in Birmingham city centre to look at how redevelopment has had an

impact on the area. Pupils completed three tasks: a pedestrian count and environmental

quality surveys at four different locations in Brindleyplace and along the canals

Hippodrome Song writing workshop

Song writing workshop was held on Tuesday 15 th October 2019 & Tuesday 22nd

November 2019 at the Hippodrome.

8 Cole were chosen to participate in these workshops. Prior to the workshops

starting 8 Cole went to watch the musical Eye of the Storm at the Hippodrome

which gave the students a taster of what is to come.

Workshops were led by musician Darren Dolczech alongside Mr Carvalho. Darren

gave the students the overview of the Eye of the Storm. Students were then

split up into groups to start the song writing process. The end of the 1 st session

students had wrote the following. Joyce composed the chord progression as well as

writing the chorus. While the verse was taken from various students of 8 Cole,

great team effort in this 1 st session. Darren then added the melody for the song.

Storm inside my head

Chorus

There’s a storm inside my head

I kind of wish that I was dead

A crazy storm inside my head

Just want to go right back to bed

Verse 1

There’s a tornado outside my door that I’m trying

to ignore.

Mama is sick and it’s so sad I feel like everything is going bad

There’s no time for me to think, can’t open my eyes to blink

Sinking into my fantasy carried away on a Stormy sea.

The final workshop saw the students adding a rap for the bridge section.

RAP

Dropped out of school, now I’ve left my mum

My sister has come, now I’m singing this song

Dropped out of physics, not learning anymore

Feeling so lonely, cos’ I’m so poor

‘A Day at the Opera’ by Mr. Hayles

On Thursday 24th October 2019, Selly Park Girls took part in a workshop run by

the Royal Opera House in joint collaboration with the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

The workshop was tailored for girls from all year groups and involved girls

with differing abilities. The workshop was incorporated operatic dramatic singing

based on Largo al Factotum from Rossini’s opera ’The Barber of Seville’.

The workshop began with vocal and physical warm-ups and all the pupils explored

the repertoire with a combination of singing and drama activities. The workshop

was led by Nic Chalmers who has a great deal of experience in engaging young

people in opera and the arts and this was very new to our pupils.

By the end of the workshop the group had developed their singing abilities and increased

their awareness of the dramatic possibilities in the art-form of Opera. All

pupils enjoyed this event and said that this was a worthwhile experience of which

they would have never considered prior to their attendance to the visit.

year 7, 8 and 9 pupils performed at the Hippodrome's Blood Brothers festival. This

performance was part of a competition involving 5 other schools from across the

prizes, the more books and quizzes that they do the more

points they earn.

We have small gifts of stationery and certificates with every

25 points that they earn. Keep reading girls, we look forward

to rewarding you for your efforts!

Young Carers

Miss Johnson (Young Carers Lead): “Working at Selly Park means

I am in a position of trust, and as a lead practitioner for young carers

I take my role seriously in helping pupils and their families in removing

any barriers to learning.”

Mr Gibson (Young Carers SLT Lead): “ I will be the strategic lead

to ensure that the most up to date information is available from local

and national sources. This will ensure we offer the best support to the

Girls’.

We are really passionate that these girls need to be recognised and appreciated

for the amazing work they do. Parents/Carers, if you want to discuss anything

please email enquiries@sellyparkgirls.org and reference Young Carers.
