FROM THE DIRECTOR

Thank you all for being an important part of OPS

success in 2019.

I am so grateful to be able to

work alongside such talented, committed and

compassionate persons here at OPS, and after

being here for 20 years, I truly see you as my

extended family – in a good way.

Together we have accomplished so much, and even

the awesome pictures in this yearbook do not do

justice to the many great things you all have been

involved with in 2019. I am so proud that

everyone at OPS in some fashion, either on stage

or behind the scenes contributed to the success of

the OPS Outreach 2019.

One of the things I like most about my job is getting to hear incredibly positive

and appreciative feedback about you and OPS from those with whom you have

interacted, especially when they frequently say they wished other regulatory

agencies could be like OPS.

As we end a very successful year, I am also very optimistic about next year, and

my vision for 2020 is around providing more Clarity in what we do as we

continue to provide Outstanding Public Service.

I hope you and your loved ones have a joyful holiday season and a happy and

prosperous new year.

From Management

It's time to reflect on last year's accomplishments

and opportunities for growth, with the goals of

appreciating what and who we have and how we

can continue to grow. Here's to a fun, safe and

productive 2020!

I would just like to wish my OPS team the very

best during this holiday season and to thank you

for your hard work and professionalism. You all

are a joy to work with!!

As another year comes to a close, I look back on our accomplishments

and the growth experienced by our team. You are all so talented and I

am honored to work with you! My job is easier because of you, and you

also make it fun to come to work everyday. Thank you for your

continued contributions to make OPS a great place to grow, develop

and serve the citizens of Colorado. I wish you all an enjoyable and safe

holiday season. Happy Holidays!

The Boiler group has been really busy in 2019 and

together we've done well over 10,000 boiler

inspections. We have a large load to carry in our

efforts to keep Colorado safe and I just want to give

you a HUGE THANK YOU for all of your hard

work and diligence. I wish you and your families

all the best as this year comes to an end. Let's keep

it safe and do it all again in 2020!

A very big Thank You to my team, Catherine Johnson,

Erik Trefry, Vinny Secondo and Mike Montoya, for your

work this past year, your dedication, and your

accomplishments in Enforcement. We have many

challenges to deal with, and I appreciate everyone's efforts

to remain flexible and open to new ideas and processes.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to each one of you!

I am so excited to have been given a chance

to do something new. I look forward to a

new year, with new chances to improve.

Happy Holidays!

I appreciate your continued hard work and dedication

throughout 2019. Because of what you do, all citizens in

Colorado can know that there is equity in the

marketplace, the fuel they consume is safe for their

vehicles, their homes and businesses are protected

through code compliance and their drinking water is

safe. Good job! I hope you all have a blessed Christmas

season and a New Year full of contentment and joy!

WHOA. 2019 has flown by! I continue to be

amazed at what OPS accomplishes each year

and how every person in the division

contributes to those accomplishments. I have

never worked with a better group of people; who

aren't just colleagues, but to me are close

friends and family. The culture, the

atmosphere, and the value we each add are what

make this such a great division to work in. I

hope that we continue to foster these

relationships far into the next decade. I want to

wish all of you and your families, a very Merry

Christmas, and Happy New Year!

I wish you and your family a very Merry

Christmas and Happy New Year! Thank

you all for your hard work and dedication;

it has been an amazing year!

Content

I cannot believe the year is almost over

again! There have been so many changes

and new projects, that I can only be proud

of what my team does. I wish all happy

holiday and a Happy new Year.

Kudos to the Remediation team for another

successful year. We continue to lead EPA Region

8 by closing 218 petroleum release events, which

represents 55% of the entire Region's closure goal.

We also continue to share our staff expertise with

participation in ITRC's training program in

China, the Region 8 meeting in Rapid City, the

ASTSWMO LUST Workshop in New Orleans, an

invitation to the Montana DEQ Consultants Day

2020, and our REP Continuing Education

courses. The Brownfields team collaborated with

the Data Team to produce the Brownfields Story

Map for marketing the program, including the

new component of EV charging stations. We've

removed 110 aging tanks with Policy 29 and the

Tank Removal Incentive and have reimbursed

$705,000 in tank removal costs. Congrats to the

entire Remediation team for helping Colorado

lead the way

Happy holidays to everybody. Thank you

for all your hard work in 2019. 2020 is

going to be a blast! (pun intended).

NEW DECADE…OR IS IT?

Recently, there has been much debate about when the old decade ends and the new one begins. Some

say this decade ends on December 31, 2019, and the start of the new one begins January 1, 2020. For

others, the new decade doesn’t start until January 1, 2021; the old one concluding on December 31,

2020. But which is correct?

As you think about New Year’s resolutions, here’s one we should all make together: resolve to insist

that decades begin with the year ending in the numeral 1 and finish with a 0. For a decade to

begin, we must start with the year ending with 1 (2021) and finish with 10, or so far as chronology

is concerned, a year ending in 0 (2030).

When Does The New Decade Really Begin, 2020 or 2021?

Recently, there has been much debate about when the old decade ends and the new one begins. Some

say this decade ends on December 31, 2019, and the start of the new one begins January 1, 2020. For

others, the new decade doesn’t start until January 1, 2021; the old one concluding on December 31,

2020. But which is correct?

The Elevator Analogy

As an analogy, think of going into a building in which the ground floor is listed not as the first

floor, but as the lobby. So the first floor is actually one flight above you.

So if you were to go into an elevator located in the lobby and wanted to go 10-flights up, you would

actually end up on the ninth floor (if you were to assume that the lobby as the “zero” floor).

But if you assume the lobby as the “first” floor and went 10-flights up, you would end up on the

tenth floor. In essence, on our calendars, 2021 is the equivalent of a “first-floor lobby,” and after

going up ten flights (or years), we’ll arrive at the tenth floor. Or in this case, the year 2030—when

that decade ends.

A “Punny” Year Ahead

So let’s face it, from a mathematical point of view, a new decade is still a year away, in the year

2021. But that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate the arrival of 2020. For one thing, it’s going to be a

year filled with many puns about perfect vision. How do I know?

Eye saw it coming, thanks to my 2020 vision!

And 2021 and beyond will be worse because… hindsight is 2020. How eye-ronic!
