REPORT

DEAR FRIENDS,

The 2018–2019 school year at

Bernard Zell was my introduction

to this incredible community.

Through interviews, meetings

and town halls, I met students,

parents, grandparents, alumni,

faculty and staff. I met board

members, the PTC executive team

and a wide range of committed

volunteers, all working to improve educational outcomes for

the next generation of Jewish leaders. And while I was not

an administrator last school year, I was warmly welcomed

into the Bernard Zell family and was able to observe the

strengths of our teachers and the dedication of parents. This

report details what I saw last year. Now four months into the

2019-2020 school year, I’ve been able to witness firsthand

how your generosity fuels this warm and welcoming

community.

Stewarding forward the Bernard Zell Annual Campaign,

Captial Campaign, endowment initiative and all other efforts

contained in these pages during the last year was Dr. Alyson

Horwitz. Her leadership was crucial to getting us to where

we are today–and along with the rest of the Bernard Zell

staff–is to be enthusiastically commended.

As we now make big ambitious plans for the future of our

students, I encourage you to read through the history of

last year so you can find the strength and excitement that

will propel us into the future together. It is my honor to be

working alongside you, and my privilege to be standing on

the shoulders of all those who have already done so much to

make Bernard Zell the stunning example that it is today.

L’Shalom,

Gary Weisserman

Head of School

THE CHAMLIN FAMILY HELPING TO GROW

FUTURE JEWISH LEADERS

Residing a short distance from school in Uptown, it’s not uncommon for

Diana and Adam Chamlin to drive by the Bernard Zell campus on their

way to a routine appointment or event. But should their kids, Jay (SK) or

Henna (3rd), happen to notice that they’re even within a few blocks of the

school, they’ll beg mom and dad to change course and drive right down

Broadway. And this past summer, they loved to drive by and check on the

progress of our new home.

“The kids feel so comfortable at school,”

said Adam. “It’s a home away from

home. So it makes sense that even

during the summer months, they

want to see the building they associate

with their friends, teachers and feelings

of security.”

This sense of community and shared

values is a big part of why the

Chamlin’s chose Bernard Zell for their

kids, and it’s why they’ve made it a

priority to get involved and support the

school. Diana has served on the Parent

Teacher Committee and as a parent

ambassador, and as a family they’ve

made meaningful contributions in

support of both the Annual Campaign

and the ongoing Campaign to

Transform Bernard Zell.

“Both of our families gave what they

could to causes they valued,” said

Diana. “In fact, my parents, who were

immigrants from Russia, supported

The Jewish Federation, the organization

that helped them immigrate

to the United States.”

“Our parents supporting the causes

they believed in was a lesson we both

internalized. And today, we want to

pass the same culture of philanthropy

along to our kids by showing them that

giving to the school is a good lesson. If

we have the ability to donate, we want

to do it because it reflects our values

and can help others,” continued Adam.

With construction now nearing

completion, Diana, Adam, Jay and

Henna are even more excited to drive

by school because they not only see

the growing building as a place of

learning, it’s also a point of pride.

The Chamlins are honored to have

been able to help support the school

community of today while also

building for future generations of

Jewish leaders.

THE FEIRSTEIN FAMILY EXEMPLIFYING

COMMUNITY VALUES

When Franci and Mike Feirstein began the process of researching

schools for their daughter Joely (4th), they attended a school fair in

order to fully explore all of their options. “Bernard Zell has a great reputation,

but we didn’t think it would be an affordable option for us,” said

Franci. “But a friendly conversation with school leadership at that event

gave us insight into the incredible financial aid opportunities available.

We applied not long after that school fair and I’ll never forget when we

received our acceptance letter. Financially, the school met us where we

were and we felt–and continue to feel–so fortunate.”

For the Feirsteins, supporting the

school community is a way to express

gratitude for the generosity her family

has been shown and an opportunity to

build relationships with other Bernard

Zell families.

“Bernard Zell is very communityoriented,”

said Franci. “It really feels

like a family to us. I love volunteering

because I love being at the school,

not only to see my kid but to see

what goes on, meet other moms,

teachers and staff.”

The Feirsteins have been builders of

community by volunteering for the

Annual Campaign, serving on the

Institutional Advancement Committee,

working in the lunchroom and donating

professional services with the creation

of last year’s strategic plan video.

These gifts of time reflect a true

dedication to the school and embody

the values our community holds dear.

Every day the Feirsteins exemplify

the values of kehilla, community,

and the sense of peoplehood that is

foundational to Bernard Zell and the

Jewish community as a whole.

A COMMUNITY CELEBRATION

On October 27, 2019, a crowd of over 600 gathered in the Pritzker and

Pucker Families Gymnasium and Performance Space, and together sang,

celebrated and prayed during the dedication of the new Bernard Zell

building. Alumna, Ali Schriebman ’17, and current student, Eliza Lampert

’20, led the crowd in singing The Hope with spirit and pride. Rabbi Michael

Siegel of Anshe Emet Synagogue led a meaningful dedication prayer. Eddie

the Eagle made an appearance and embodied the ruach felt throughout

the entire school and concluded the official ribbon cutting ceremony.

Many Bernard Zell alumni families

capitalized on the opportunity to return

to the school to reconnect with the

place and the people that were so

foundational to their early educational

journey. Many alumni worked with Kyle

Sheahan, the Director of Athletics, to

facilitate various games and activities

on the field for all of the current

students and younger children in

attendance. Alumni families enjoyed

the familiar Bernard Zell spirit, while

also celebrating the exciting changes at

Bernard Zell.

Countless families took advantage of

the activities that took place

throughout the building, including tile

painting in the art rooms. Some families

meticulously planned out and painted

their tiles with guidance from the

experienced art teachers, while others

took a free-form approach to mixing

colors and patterns on the tiles that will

be displayed in the stairwells of the

new building for generations to come.

Regardless of which of the many

activities each person in attendance

enjoyed, excitement was felt

throughout the building.

Bernard Zell would not have reached

this momentous day with the collective

energies of our supportive community.

It is incredibly fulfilling for everyone

that walks the halls of Bernard Zell

each day to see how the new building is

already impacting the lives of our

students, and we look forward to many

more celebrations together.
